you can have good comedy with swear words, it doesn't make it any less "pure" or "trve"

      No swear words??
Who needs swear words when you're (jokingly of course) attempting to completely denigrate humiliate and tear a person's name, reputation or life's work apart. He could have chosen to be a straight stand up comedian without the insults.... but no.

Yeah, my humor runs right along with Don Rickles', Thank You Don! More than once you saved my life with your humor, and God Bless you for It!. The cool thing was - you KNEW he was kidding, and that he was a real class act. I am 55, and seeing all these stars that we knew as kid start to pass on makes me a bit sad because these stars were of a different breed of stars than we see today, more old-school, if you will. and I laughed so hard here, I was crying now too ! In 1974 I was at Sportmans Park in Chicago for the night racing card and spotted Rickles at a table nearby with his wife and another couple. I wanted to say hello and have him sign my program but I figured I better get a few insults ready to fling at him in case he started in on me. (I would retort with: "Did you get a lollipop with that haircut?") Anyway, I stopped by with my program in hand and politely told him how much I enjoyed his work. He offered me a seat to join them, asked me who I liked in the next race, signed my program, offered to buy me a drink. I thanked him for the autograph, declined on joining them (that really would have been imposing), and left with even more respect for him than ever before. He was a consummate pro and all-around great guy. There'll never be another like him.

Great memory I’m sure, lovely story.
He was one of the best ever, up there with Groucho, for me anyway. And wasn’t it great that even while he was slagging off every form of person (race, sex, class etc.), it was all taken in good faith. No one ever walked out, called the authorities or got up on their ‘PC horse’.
      Classic comedy, we’ll
never see the likes of it again.
Hope you all have a nice day ✋

Sometimes feel sorry for the poor bugger that interrupts or heckles Don it's funny as hell though. We need this type of comedy back in the world today. We will always miss you Don and the whole Rat Pack. I miss you even now. I wish I had a time machine just so that I could get the chance to meet you. This is a quote from Dean Martin's son - Ricci, "While it was true that Dad drank, the drunky routines were an act. On stage, and later on the set of his TV show, Dad usually had a J&B scotch and soda he nursed through the performance. It was almost always a weak scotch and soda. Other times it was just apple juice. I never saw Dad drink a martini, although the martini glass logo was frequently used in his TV show promotions and there have been countless martini bars christened in his honor. I suppose much of the association came from the last name he took, but he was never much of a martini drinker."

You're kidding me, right? Do some TRUE reading on the subject of Dean's drinking and you'll see that your theory is a crock.
Dean drank, hard. But if I was his son I suppose I'd like to believe it was an "act" too.
I suppose all those cocktails he's draining on these roasts were root beer????
It's ok. You can still love the man even if he was an alcoholic and chain smoker. Or are you going to tell me he didn't smoke too? (Dean died at 78... lung cancer).
