Hi all! Another recommendation is to *delete* the keys for " _selecting all units_ " and the keys for " _selecting all villagers_ ". IMO these keys only ruin the game for you, so if you need them, then rebind them to somewhere safe on the keyboard.
Excuse me if I missed it but how do you select your main TC ? I see you have "select all TC" on 5 but if you want to rally point the villagers of your first TC to wood and the villagers of your second TC to food, how do you do that ?
One thing I found useful is to unbind alt from rotate screen (I put rotate screen on the backslash/pipe button) and then bind alt + 1 to select all Barack’s - alt + 5 select markets (bind the rest of the building groups to alt+ w/e). This leaves all your control groups open for other things. If you later want to create proxy production groups you can still use regular ctrl groups for them and then all Baracks separately too. Alt can then be used for a whole layer for everything else as well. This is important because alt, ctrl, and shift are the only layerable keys. So wasting alt on rotate screen is a bad move. You really only use the left third of keyboard for bindings and having alt basically allows you 33% more bindings. I also found I would accidentally rotate the screen as well with it on alt some times.
Just when i think i have my hotkey optimized, you drop this banger! I did not know about overriding a preset number hotkey and reversing it. Very helpful.
@@williamwolfe9335 Valdemar said he has barracks' set to number 5 by default, but you can override that by selected your dock and pressing ctrl + 5. Now your dock is control groups 5 instead of barracks. You can remove control group 5 from the dock and it goes back to the preset, barracks.

Great guide! For people that like more control groups the alt-keys are great. I use Alt+Q, Alt+W, etc for "Selct all barracks," "Select all archery ranges," etc. Lets me queue stuff up quickly, while leaving some control groups open as flex slots; splitting army, binding production in different areas, whatever. It's insane how annyoing you can be with, for example, 3 horsemen each on groups 4-9. This setup really allows me to fumble around anti-micro my units faster than i ever thought possible
Great guide! I thought my use of hotkeys was quite advanced but some of these tips were really helpful. Especially the use of "select all" of one type of building instead of using control groups speeden things up

You did a great job explaining hotkeys for those new to Rts games. However, I would say that control groups are a preference. I personally play them in a way to where you adapt on the fly. For example, splitting your archers into 2 different groups is often very useful for micro {based on the scenario}. The same can be said for having Calvary into one group while splitting them yourself with drag and click. This makes creating and executing ambushes or surrounds much more effective. These are more advanced methods, but I think in general it is better to utilize control groups based on the scenario. One method you didn't mention is how to cycle through your unit groups with tab. Instead of having a cntrl group for each individual unit you can just select all army and press tab to cycle through each unit type. You would get a very similar use out of this method compared to the way you utilized your cntrl groups.
i use hotkey 1 for meele, hotkey 2 for ranged, hotkey 3 for siege. in the early games those are my scouting hotkeys. i use 4 for all kind of production and than tab through it (i also bind forge on 4 so i never miss upgrades) and 5 i use for all economic produce buildings (towncenter, marketplace, dock)
I like to rebind a control group to tilde (~) key (so rebind control group 9 or 0 or something to tilde). then you have an extra control group next to your hand
Good to see another anti-binding-every-new-production-building enjoyer! I found I had to do this to stay sane while playing Mongols because 2 years after release their buildings still lose bindings after they pack-unpack

I have been trialing 1 TC(s) 2 & 3 for main production because it reminds me, and I find it a bit easier, to que units as the production keys are then directly below the number keys. Interested to hear thoughs? Good to see that the standard keys are still used by pros, I do need to change my F1 from automatically going back to base, that is annoying

It feels very intuitive because when I press T I often check on barracks which is almost directly above it, then I remember to go through the rest. I also have infantry, archers, cav bond to 1,2,3. So I never actually have to select and do control 1 to add to group. So all new units are automatically in keys 1,2,3

I use the F1 for all millitary like you and I change it to "select" instead of "select and focus" or whatever it's called ... but then when I hit my TC ( "h" ) it WILL not center that, probably since that's also a "building" Can I center the camera while pressing "h" ( for TC ) but NOT center the camera for all the F1 buildings? I DO want the camera to be centered when I hit "h", but NOT for millitary buildings. EDIT: I guess I can use CTRL + H to focus on my TC ( it exists as "Center On Town Center" under the settings ) ... I'll just remap that to something else like simply "J" and I'm good :-)
I usually create a control group for TCs on the same key that I have "Select All Town Centers" on. That way I can double click that keybind and the camera will center like any other control group. :)

At 1:08 you mention pressing F2 for all economic buildings then pressing tab to cycle through the different buildings. This isn't working for me. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to map a key for this? I have F2 for economic buildings but I need to click the mill/lumber/mining camp with the mouse in order to upgrades.
im a rus player, how u manage getting the split from workers like 5 building the landmark, 5 go on straggler trees? i struggle to box exactly the amount of 5. sometimes i have luck and it takes me 3 seconds to do it and sometimes i have bad boxing and ending up taking lik 10 seconds for it. i miss the starcraft layer where u can box several villagers and shift em out 1 by 1 until u have 5 workers...
Hello, I’m watching your streams. At the start of the games, you are selecting scout and start exploring. When exploring you immediately focus your camera on TC and turn back to your scout. but in this video there is no hotkey for focusing camera to your TC. I want to know how you do it.

Do you know if I put a scout on hold and use the all idle military key, if the scout will be excluded? I use control+a to select all units. So I can also quickly find all traders or all culverins and soon and having all military on f2
When I play hybrid/water maps, I usually keybind docks through overwriting key 6. Then archer ships on 3, Springalds on 4, demos on 1, scout on 2. :) Hope that helps!
Hello! Awesome videos just found them a few day ago. Question for the F keys... I always hate having the buildings mapped to the F1-Fxx keys. I find it hard to reach all the way up to press them... and then when I want to go back to my normal keyboard(ex: select food villager to build house), I have to move my whole hand down to do so. Thus, I've awlays made my select building keys the 1-x keys(ex: all town centers are 1... all military buildings are two.. etc).. however this leaves me unable to micro as well in battles since I don't have these control groups open. Do you have a suggestion or do I just need to break the habit and get used to using the Fx keys. Thank you!
I use Ctrl and a letter for my buildings. Like Ctrl+a for barracks and Ctrl+s for archery ranges and Ctrl+d for stables. I also use a mouse button for Ctrl using the mouse software
I have not heard of this before, so I can't help you. Do some troubleshooting through checking gamefiles, then check settings if that helps and last try reinstalling. if nothing works, then perhaps it is your pc :)
I use a comparatively small keyboard: Keychron K8 Pro - that makes it slightly easier, but hand movement wasn’t really an issue before that either. It’s preferrential!
I have configured the hotkeys and... still losing a lot 😆 So that was not the magic fix to get back to gold III. I'll gues i will be hanging out with my silver players, but wait where are they?? I only play against GoldII in 1V1 ranked matches 😢
@@Valdemar1902 no I meant it as in a way to add a white tower to your archery ranges hotkey for example, but I figured the select all military prod hotkey already does this for you. I just thought the secondary menu you get when selecting this only produces from the white tower itself, thanks for the reply regardless
I would think that u guys use more complicated hotkeys. I want to attack from 2-3 fronts to mindfuck the enemy. I can get used to the chaos if I do it every game but opponent will be annoyed by multiple raids. for that, I want to put all my cavalry on 3, one group will be at 3 and 4 and one group will be at 3-5. so when I need everyone, I press 3, when I need only group 1, press 4, and for only group 2, press 5. I will use all archers on 2 and infantry or siege on 1 and maybe t. I know pros always fight in multiple fronts, how do u guys handle it if u use only one hotkey(3) for all cavalry?
I think I explained it before, but basically in the early stages of the games you will benefit from type-based control groups until the later stages where you are using multiple groups with shared types of units. So I dont use all cav as I always bind and I also change my hotkeys completely in lategame which I didnt expain
I forgot the part where u said u use 3-4 for raiding parties. I didn't watched this video in a day. I keep 50+ video tabs open for days. I still feel like even in castle age, cav and melee infantry should be seperated. but I understand that everyone is comfortable with different settings. or maybe u are right and I would realize it with gaining more experience. thanks for replying.
when I press F1 for military production buildings in centers my camera back to my base, I can't find where to take the centered camera off in options... Any advice?

This ruined my games soo many times. I lost a few just because i sent all my villagers and traders half way across the map

Settings for centering camera could be better imho, so the workaround is a custom "center camera" hotkey

You can still do that box and deselect villagers in aoe4 :) Full box select. Then tab and deselect individually :)

unlike what you say in the video, focus key doesn't focus on buildings, only on units.

I still feel like even in castle age, cav and melee infantry should be seperated. but I understand that everyone is comfortable with different settings. or maybe u are right and I would realize it with gaining more experience.
