Anyone else here because you're broke and plan on trying to catch fish from the local river to avoid paying the ridiculous cost of meat?

If you live near the ocean get into spearfishing. It’s super fun and you get unlimited meat after the initial investment.

I ordered two of these based on the reviews. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxqmKabisEv81ul5v7OhvVxxOpt2CJruI- Received them on time and they look good. I really like the handle on these knives as they feel good in my hand. I'm giving them 4 stars on look and feel, but have not had the chance to put them to the test yet. I mostly fish for catfish and can hopefully try them out in the next few days. If they hold an edge throughout a limit of catfish, they'll be worth another star.Update...I used the 9" strong and the 9" fillet on a mess of catfish. I did put a sharpening on these before I started. I want a razor edge to fillet fish but they weren't quite that sharp. The people who gave these knives crappy reviews and said they were sending them back was because they weren't razor sharp. So what, do they not have a knife sharpener?? Good grief! I mean you have to sharpen any knife from time to time.I personally like them and am pleased with them. If you're too lazy to sharpen a knife then hire someone to clean your fish lol.I've never bought a knife in my life that would shave hair right out of the box. Don't be afraid to purchase the knives. They're pretty nice in my opinion.

This are many things wrong with this video.
    1. This is not a Spanish Mackerel. It is a Spotted Mackerel.
    2. Never allow your child to put their fingers in the mouth of a fish. Mackerels, for instance, have razor-sharp teeth.
    3. Always cut away from yourself, not towards yourself.
    4. Fish that have been filleted and frozen straight after they have been caught are much fresher and have better taste than a whole fish that has been at least three days on ice. "Fresh" whole fish are caught on day 1, brought to market and displayed on day 2, bought by customer and taken home on day 3, then hopefully filleted and eaten before day 4. Bacteria in fish can develop even in minus 3 degrees. Therefore, fillets kept at about minus 18 degrees are also much safer to eat.

When I began eating meat and fish again since being a 5-year veggie, I promised myself to not be in ignorance as to the whole experience of eating meat; from farm to table.
This summer, a challenge for me is to catch, fillet, and prepare a fish in a full circle of respect and gratitude for the nourishment this life will give me. I'm time-framing it to my two weeks at the cottage this fri. Will report back, and now I have no excuse that I don't know how to fillet a fish.

Alex West The word "fillet" in English comes originally from the French "filet". If like the English you know how to pronounce French words, you would know that the pretentious way the Americans say it like they do in McDonalds is wrong. it's a bit of English belligerence in that they know at one time they we were the peasants (from the French meaning from the country). Anglo Saxon words are from the field, French words come from the table. The French and English know this and it's a bit of fun we have missing in the Yanks insular and ignorant minds.

    Easy?
This is my first ever fish to fillet, I’m 56 and not really into fish, although I like a good fillet of salmon from time to time.
I was given two whole fish similar to the fish demonstrated here. Friends went fishing in a boat, came back and said, here, try these, they are delicious.
    What a mess!
Scales everywhere, you didn’t say anything about de-scaling.
And guts! Looks like you pre-gutted the fish because I don’t see any mention of the bits that I seem to have punctured in the processes. Smelly-az.
So yeah, 2 good fish ended up in the bin. Next time I’ll tell them to just give me the fillets.

My new job is the only reason why I watched this. I hate my job and might quit. I been there less then a week and someone who worked there 5 years blamed me for not being an expert the first time I touched a fish. My co workers avoid already and one tried to convince a member from another department to hire someone for my position who was born with darker skin because I born with white skin. Holy fuck!!!

Sure, its a good technique to know how to do. But I don't see myself buying whole much as I don't want to have to deal with a rotting fish carcass in my kitchen garbage bin.

What about herring? It has 2 rows on each fillet and the bones goes sideways so that you can" do V incision, and making double sideways V incisions is a waste of a lot of meat
