    This video shows how to fillet a Largemouth Bass. This same technique also works for bluegill, and crappie. This is very simple, and only requires a sharp fillet knife.

    I'm from Louisiana and anybody you ask would tell you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating bass. Down here we respect the way other sportsman deal with their catch wether it is by releasing them or taking them home for dinner. I think some of yall need to learn some respect especially for a man who takes the time out of his day to educate yall on how to clean the fish that yall catch.

      liljosh159 I am an avid bass fisherman. I practice catch and release. I will however keep and eat a bass that has been badly gill hooked and is bleeding out. no sense in wasting. They taste great!

    to all the people saying you shouldnt keep a bass cause its a sport fish. im a avid bass fisherman and down here in florida the bass are everywhere its nice to have a fish fry every once in awhile

      +Flying Weasels The only fish I can think of that has the red vein part is catfish (which I do cut out). Bass are white and flakey all the way to the skin.

    if you take that filet and dont cut it all the way through the tail, once you separate it from the rib cage/stomach you can simply flip the filet over with it still attached to the tail and skin it much easier. You have the whole fish to grab onto for support. Great video keep it up!

      @@rogerhouse3249 make sure you stop and follow the spine with your knife be careful not to cut it as it would make it very hard to get a good fillet

    Thanks for posting this video. I've started fishing again after 25+ years of being away from it and we brought home our first keeper bass of the season. Everything else came back to me pretty quickly but as I looked at the fish and tried to remember how to fillet it I realized this was one thing that was not coming back to be. Your video allowed me to get two pretty nice fillets out of my bass. Not perfect but better than I would have done if I had not watched this. Hopefully I'll keep catching more so I have a chance to practice. I'm definitely "hooked" on fishing again.

      So glad my video helped you out. There are other methods to cleaning fish, but this one uses the least amount of steps to gain the most amount of meat with no bones. I slowed the process down in my video in order to teach people. It was definitely not meant to show how fast I can fillet. I've been doing this so long, that I can smoked through a bucket of fish in a hurry. Not all fish are filleted the same way. here's a video on how to fillet a trout:

      The laws want you to release the breeding size but I dont like that big a fish to eat . The smaller ones taste better anyhow and easyer to catch hahah...

    I cut the tail/ bleed out all my fish before filleting. makes the meat a lot whiter/ cleaner tasting IMO.

      I believe your method is a popular one. I bleed my rabbits, squirrels, and deer, so why wouldn't it work for fish. Thanks for the great tip. Ill have to put it in practice.

      Taking a pair of snips or scissors to the folks is the best way to do it but I usually give them a book of the head first

    Great video...reading through the comments, from some who claim to be "fishermen" no less, all I can do is smh. I searched this video out so I could filet 3 nice 3-4 lb'ers more efficiently. Perfect size for keeping in my opinion. Here in Tennessee, most of our lakes have a 5/day, 15 inch min. People, why do you think that wildlife management services have put such controls in place?? It is because they are needed to manage a strong, healthy environment for wildlife to truly flourish. Harvesting is a CRUCIAL part of CONSERVATION. Also, largemouth bass has a texture and flavor that is reminiscent of healthy bluegill...excellent meat. Personally, I like walleye, white bass and crappie a bit more...but black bass, in general, are very good...not to mention a very healthy food source. While I practice catch and release most of the time with the black bass family (large/smallmouth, etc.), it's only because my wife and I don't have the time to prepare them.       I appreciate the positive comment. There definitely are other methods, but this is the one I have stuck with, because you usually don't have any bones in the meat to deal with.

    delicous!! responsible, and i again say responsible, keeping of any fish is healthy for the entire fish population. The system will thrive with healthier fish if you harvest what is responsible in your area. It is simple fact yall.     Hey I know I’m late to the party but thanks for the video. My dad and i usually filet catfish and find them the easiest but today we decided to try bass we filleted them (huge pain in the bass) and found this is truly an art form, in other words thank you for the help .

    I love eating bass and am also a tournament fisherman.. we caught an 18 pound sack 2 weeks ago got 3rd place. Put them back in the livewelll after weighing. took them home and not only enjoyed the $280 I won but also eating them the following night.

    Awesome video straight to the point. Other TH-camrs should take note. ... Awesome Video! I'm 38 years old and I've always been interested in fishing (Yet afraid of the unknown). I bought The Abu Garcia Vandetta rod 4-5 years ago then a black max open faced reel to pair it with. I always purchase a fishing liscense every year yet I never do anything but casting out with a weight into the water as far as I could for practice (I've done that for years) until today.
    My casts were great, slowly reeling my nonlive/"Plastic" bait and I cought 6 bass today. I Released 3 of them because they were either to short or too skinny. One is a behemoth and the others are a pretty darn good size. Because of your video I know what to do. Thank You!

      Bass tastes much like catfish in my opinion. I've tried it a few times, but it can sometimes be a little muddy (meaning it has a taste like the lake a little bit).

      JOHN-117 I tried one a week ago that swallowed a frog lure and wasn’t going to survive. Not bad at all. Stuffed it with rosemary and squirted lemon on it. A little bland but tastes similar to crappie.

      I found a recipe on Food network.
      Lemon herb, butter, garlic, oregano, etc.
      Really tasty, not as much as trout, but pretty darn good
      I substitute almond flour for all purpose flour.

    Great tutorial. For skinning fillets I use salt poured on the tip of the tail to grip the skin

    That was a very well done video. The technique for filleting a fish was always sort of a mystery to me. My Dad always just cut the heads off and Mom cooked them. Now I can give my hand a try at it and maybe enjoy some nice battered and fried bass. Thanks!

      I do enjoy the skin on with other species but Largemouth bass SKIN has a bad flavor, in my opinion. The meat itself is great.

    Great video It helped me alot. And cool tip for you if you fry or bake the fillet Leave the scales on, the heat will burn the membrane that connecting the scales to the meat and causes it to separate very easily, kinda like when you cook chicken that fatty skin on the chicken is a pain in the but to peel off but once its cooked it comes off real easy, i found that this also happens with fish fellets and pluss youll get every single ounce of meat separated from the scales.

      Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I tried to go slow in the video in order to teach... glad it worked out. once you get good at it, you can go a lot faster. probably 30 -45 seconds per fish and not have to go back for any bones. Thanks again for the comment.

      Bleed the fish when you catch it reach in the mouth with pliers rip a few gills out. it will bleed out. Keep fish in a bucket of water.

    Never really had largemouth bass before. I've never really thought to try it as I tend to release whatever I catch simply because I don't really fish for food. Maybe I'll give it a try someday. Also, to all the anglers getting up in arms, chill out the fish is legal and they are plentiful all through the US. Great video!

    when i take fillets off the skin i prefer to leave the skin attached at the tail end.then proceed to fillet the meat from the skin...its just easier for me.also keep that knife stupid sharp.no sawing through meat but nice knife work overall i enjoyed the video.

    If you bleed the fish out before it dies, the filets will be white instead of red when you clean them. Also much less messy on your filet table. Nice video

      THANKS! My favorite part of this method is the "no bones". I grew up picking bones out of the fish to where I wouldn't eat it. This fixes that problem. Thanks for taking the time to give positive feedback, my friend!

      I grew up eating bass, bluegill, and catfish. In fact, most fishermen in my area eat bass. It wasn't until a few years ago that I learned that there were people that didn't.

    I live in Ohio and on my home lake as long as they are 12 inches you can keep a hundred if you wanted too, in Ohio it goes by inches. Like a keep saugeye from alum creek has to be 15" and the crappie have to be 9" to keep

    Are there any bones in the filet? I've seen the "zipper" method used on other fish, does this not apply to Bass?

      No bones with this method. Not sure what the zipper method is. I'll have to look that one up.

      It called the laterial line in the fish. White or pinkish color line in the middle of a fallet. Catfish have them walleye. Not sure if bass have them or not? But yes you just cut it out. Or zipper it out cut on each side of the fallet next to the line and pull it up and out or down like a zipper.

    No problem with eating pond bass(they taste great) but a bass out of the lake goes back for me because I fish tournaments and a bass is a money fish. Great vid though

      That's right , I keep bass out of ponds also . To have a well managed pond you have to cull some of the bass or it can get over populated .

    plus à week ago will camping, I try with clay, I just stuff them and cover everything with clay, dig a hole under the fire and cover, that was with pike too, super, happy fishing :)

      @@PhilCrockett I just saw your reply for this one, the only thing I can say is if you want to try with clay practice first, took me couple of try to get it right, the clay as to be just right ( if you can find some ;) So my best solution is that I put some aluminum foil in my backpack and just put it in, the same as a BBQ and you won't have the clay aftertaste, just worry about the heat, too much or too little, that's it, did you know that this method as been use for long time, probably the reason they invented the slow cooker, same principal, beans with pork lard, onions, molasses, birch and maple sirup, in a pot dig a hole put it in and let it cook for 18-22 hours, I garanty you you will find it tasty but I'm not responsible if you bet hook ;) Sandy ground works best, have to go I'm getting hungry ;)

    phil, carp not the same, I dont eat that fish, but I see people eat it, they smoke it, seem a good thing, wonder if bass or pike will taste good like that, it is going to be my next experiment.

      You can smoke any fish but bass and pike are not an oily fish and tend to get too dry . So , smoking works better with more oily fish like salmon , trout , white fish , etc .

      @@PhilCrockett Nice that you remember ;) Yes I tried it couple of time different ways and nothing beat a fresh catch cook on the open fire ( with lemon and spice ), somebody told me to try on the BBQ , big mistake now I almost do it this way all the time, I try to smoke some pike bass trout but always the same strong taste that I have to wash my mouth with a couple of beers, did it the natural way on a fire and with a smoker, did you try to smoke fish? Maybe I do something g wrong or I just don't like smoke fish.

      I just tried a new (to me) method of cooking carp.
      Scaled and gutted, slits about every 1/8" down to the spine. Rub in some spices into the slits, then fry.
      It cuts all the little Y bones, and makes it very easy to eat. Honestly one of the tastiest meals I've had out of a fish!

    Do a lot of bass fishing up north here in Mn and love eating them. My go to is 3/4 cornmeal & 1/4 chef Paul's seafood magic. Simple & light & delicious! Anyone else have some good coating/breading recipes?!

    Good video. one difference between your method and mine, I was taught to pull the fillet through the knife, rather than pushing the knife through the fillet. But you were able to do your method cleanly, so hats off to you.

    What I learned from this video is that I need to keep working at my knife edge until I can get it as sharp as yours. Makes a world of difference.

      I found that, no matter how sharp your knife is, a big old bass like this one is still very tough to cut through its skin

      There's nothing wrong with gutting it. In fact, there might be some benefit by 'bleeding' it that way. There's no rules, it's just however you were taught and are comfortable /efficient. Thanks for the comment my friend!

      Phil gutting the fish is not bleeding the fish. You have to cut the tail off while the fish is still alive and hang the fish head up to bleed it.

      Tony Badini. Or after stunning thwm, you put your finger on the skin flap between the gill plates, and pull away from you. And pull the 2 main arteries/veins underneath. Bleeds them much quicker without the need to hang them. Thats how you properly dispatch a fish ethically (if you care about being ethical and also care about quickly bleeding to get the freshest high quality meat)

    Bro it’s a fish! If you gonna catch a big fish then eat it!! Bass taste amazing and if I caught a bass that big or even close to that size I would eat it. Down where I live if you catch a bass you gone eat it tf throwing it back

      Yes! I grew up on catfish, bass and bluegill. We always mixed the bass and bluegill when cooking and serving. The catfish was to be cooked and served by itself. I always had a hard time telling the bass and bluegill apart...... sure tasted the same to me.
