  • Just a quick video describing the steps and tools needed to install a cam gear on a camshaft that is a interference fit.
    Do not use a press to install the gear, it will shave a bit of metal from the bore and the gear will slide off when you are driving it.
    If you enjoy my videos. My son could use your help. He is suffering from Muscular Dystrophy. gofund.me/71156826

    Is that the same way to put the other gear on the crankshaft?

    Thank you Tom. How do I get the old gear off the cam? It's a 250 straight 6 in a 69 chevy van

    Do you have any advice on this? I've tried to install my gear preciselly following iskys manual, however it didnt work (shaved a lot of alluminum from the gear). I removed the gear and I'll install a new one. I'm thinking about not using the iskys method (which is to use kitchen stoven) and heat it as you did, and maybe going a little further on the temperature...Cam is from isky as well

    Tom What controls the END PLAY of the gear (between the block and the gear) once the cam is installed and bolted in with the cam plate. Is there a clearance between the gear and the block if the gear is pressed in towards the block OR can the gear back side touch the block? Thank you in advance. Bill C

      First, a question for you. Did you watch the video? There is a thrust plate installed before the gear. It also has a spacer inside of the thrust plate. Dont forget the key

      @@telowe2000 The machine shop installed the gear on the cam. Yes, there's a retainer on the cam behind the gear. I will use a feeler gage and see what the exact clearance is between the gear and block face.

  • @VinnyMartello

    If you absolutely had to press it on for some reason, couldn’t you drill and tap it for a bolt? It would be like a Chevrolet V8 at that point.

    • @telowe2000
      @telowe2000  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bolt will not fit under the timing cover without putting a bulge in it.

    • @VinnyMartello
      @VinnyMartello 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. If that’s the worst thing that would happen then it’s possible to just modify the timing cover a little. But I did make sure to install the cam gear YOUR way this time around and I was successful.

      You know Don Terrill that owned it passed away not long ago, right? Mike Jones of Jones Cams bought the website and is trying to revamp it in memory and in honor of Don, getting more industry professionals back and posting there. He's also doing things like offering more incentives for people to participate...vendors mainly. We'd love for you to join us sometime. I think you'd like the changes so far.
