      Try to find an original unrestored 6-cylinder Mustang or Camaro from the muscle car era. Back in the 80s or 90s of course you would tear out that 6 and put in a V8

    I too did a 292 build in the early '80's to put in my 64 Chevy van that I had converted to 4 wheel drive. I started with an industrial engine I sourced from a wrecking yard that had been used to drive an agricultural water pump, because they were built much more stout than the automotive equivalent, they were built to run nonstop all day and night. It was bored .30 over and balanced and line honed and the block and head were flattened out. The head was fitted with big valves to make it like a 194 fueler head on a V8, it had an Offenhauser manifold and a Carter 4barrel carb and dual exhaust headers. It had a comp cam and high volume oil pump and I found an HEI distributor out of a later model 6. Sadly my van was hit while parked by a drunk driver and looked like a Banana. It found new life in a '69 Chevelle for a while until I put it into a '68 Grumman Olsen Curbside step van. If you were in Huntington Beach in '85 - '86 then you saw it parked on PCH North of the pier almost every morning as it was my Surf mobile! In those days I lived to surf!
    As for power I never got to Dyno it, but in that van, which had a 5 ton gvrw, and 5.88 rear end gears with a top loader granny low 4 speed I easily pulled the grapevine going North from Bakersfield at 90mph and could have gone faster, but I was afraid of getting pulled over by the Chippies.
    It still lives today mated to a 700R4 automatic in a '67 Nova and she still is a runner!

    My dad was a mechanic in the 70's and he says that the straight six is by far his favorite engine. He says *1.* It never dies because you can pretty much just keep replacing parts until you have a 'ship of Theseus' situation. *2.* He said you can practically fix anything on the thing from above, just the hood up while wearing a tuxedo and not get it dirty. I've talked to a few other older mechanics and told him what my dad said, one simply said, 'sounds about right' and the second said, 'the straight six is a beautiful thing.'

    My uncle [ R.I.P.] used to haul in scrap metal for extra $. In the late 80's he had an old Chevy pick up with a 292 strait six 3 on the tree. Many a time the guy paying out at the recycle center told him that he was the heaviest load of the day.Which is saying something when there was dually Dodges and commercial trucks in and out of there. We live in the mountains and have to cross a few of them to get there but that old thing never missed a beat. Stout little beast.

    This engine was in school buses back in the 60's and was tough as nails. It was really a bullet proof engine. Drove one for thousands of miles. After some wear, they ran much better by advancing the timing till just before causing a starting problem. These engines had the dog poop run out of them in a school bus.

    I have always loved these old school six builds. They just don't make inline sixes that are this utilitarian and strong anymore. I always wondered why all of the old 40s and 50s heavy duty trucks had an old large displacement inline six, but they're made to last and be strong, so they're known to last for hundreds of thousands of miles before they need a rebuild. Still, you rarely ever hear of anyone building one to make good power. I also really enjoyed when the guy from Trucks said, "it sounds like a Skyline motor (a RB26DETT)." That made my day.

      Shane, do you have a one-barrel, a 4-barrel, or a Clifford/Offy multi-carb intake? Somebody made a handful of alloy-block&head 292s that were for racing, so they were un-godly expensive--$10-20K back then, which was "stupid-money" because 10K'd get you TWO Corvettes in that era. But your 235 could be scanned & 3-D'd in Alloy, weighing at least 100 lbs Less than the 265 V-8, and maybe adding a $100K Value to your '57, because $20K then is at least 100K now. A friend back in the day had a milled-head 235 '57 that'd BEAT some 283s & 327s, but because he increased the compression, he'd burn more oil than a stocker.

    I had a all most new 4cyl Ford backhoe turbo I got from work. I asked my buddy if he wanted it and he put it on his 83 F150. It had a 300 I6 I6 carburated. He purchased a Ofenhouser 4 bbl intake, took a Holley double pumper converted it into a blow thru, made his own headers and hot side for the turbo. A backhoe with a large 4cyl deisel isn't made to turn a lot of rpm the waste gate is designed to make boost quick and a lot of it in a 2200 rpm range.
    He cranked his truck and oh shit come out of his mouth. It was making 6# of boost at idle. It make a lot of boost around 35# He installed a blow off valve to calm the boost down. After the 3rd used engine burning a piston he removed it. It was a lot of fun to drive. Guess that's how you burn pistons having fun with cast pistons and 6# of boost at idle.

    I have a 1968 Chevrolet C20 with coil springs that has a stock 292, 4 speed manual, former state gravel truck, dual pivot hanger bearing driveline with a very low geared posi rearend. It can pull a train down a dirt road!
    I never drive it over 50-55 mph, because it's humming like a german tank!
    An OD high gear for the highway or interstate would be nice, while keeping the fun lower gears for pulling.

    Those old in line 6s are the best motors, you can't kill them the 300 of ford and the 292 were discontinued because they were old workhorses that didn't sell enough parts

    • @skylinefever
      @skylinefever 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 292 was discontinued because it couldn't pass smog. Rather than spend the money to put MPFI on the inline, GM chopped off 2 cylinders from the 350 so that they could overcome the fuel/air distribution problem that the 292 had. They only needed TBI to make the 4.3 V6 pass smog. The 4.3 TBI and later versions would have been good if they didn't use such garbage intake manifold gaskets.
      The Ford 300 was discontinued because it was already smoggy despite having MPFI and a continuous exhaust air pump. Also, Ford wanted the 1997 F-150 to be shorter, and that meant an inline 6 wouldn't have fit anyway. They needed that stupid V6.
      Also, those stupid engines may have sold parts at dealers, but people who get fed up with them then proceeded to buy a Toyota Tundra, so that cost GM and Ford, it didn't save them.

    • @nerd1000ify
      @nerd1000ify ปีที่แล้ว

      In Australia the Ford I6s didn't die. They got a little smaller (down to 4L) and went to overhead cams, and stuck around until the 2010s when Ford closed their local factory.
      The last version was the now legendary 'Barra' with DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder and optionally a turbo. They're very stout engines and stock blocks have been pushed to 1000hp plus with appropriate upgrades to the rotating assembly.

      Custom pistons for the 292 are expensive, the only pistons that are "economical" to put in are a set of stock style hypers.
      The 250 (292s little brother) is easier to find pistons for, since it shares the same piston as a 307 smallblock chevy.

He filled the V8 head bolt holes and bored more holes to fit the 6 cylinder block. He installed 350 pistons in the 6 cylinder block. The next year he did the same thing with a 250 block and machined the block so the 292 crank would fit. I might've gone with a Clifford intake over Offenhauser for this build. Seems like the more open nature of the Clifford would better suit.

      Not familiar with either of the Chev 6 manifolds, but I am familiar with the Holden 6 manifolds. I never liked the squared off manifolds that were very typical in early factory castings. It makes the inside runner too short and the outside ones too long. Much prefer manifolds like the Cain design where the centre runner was lengthen and outer runners tapered towards the head.

      I think that they are just using it for the naturally aspirated pulls, the turbo set up is fuel injected.

    This is the engine everyone ripped out so they could stick in a 350.

      Thats why 6s are pretty cheap to pick up another. Ive bought a 250 and a 292 for $50 each this year

    I never got free parts when I ordered.. hmm
    For 12bolt gifting such items.. they should have made a more obvious mention. Just my 2 cent.

      That would have added a hefty cost. Thanks for noticing
