A long-forgotten gem of an engine. In the shop I worked during the 80's and 90's, we built 230 and 250 circle track engines as well as truck engines. Upgrading the flywheel bolts to 1/2 20's is a good idea on these engines. They also need to put a large washer with a flat head screw to hold the cam gear on. With this level of cylinder pressure, they better find another crank and bearings. After 50,000 miles the bearings will be gone. If they didn't put hard seats in the exhaust by the time the bearings are done the worn exhaust seats will take up all the travel in the lifters. Been there done that. I ran a .060 over 250 with 11:1 compression and 3.73 gears 60 interstate miles to work every day in a 1970 pickup.
Worked at a machining house from the eighties and build 292 intake and exhaust combos for UPS trucks. Remember machinery tag stating see oiling bulletin 9-12-1941. Thinking we built these until 1990's.

I have already done some testing with the pushrod chevy with good results. All draw through though, I prefer it. There are a couple videos on my channel of some pretty basic tests with the pushrod engine. I'm hoping to get started again on the project soon as I have just finally moved my shop
I'd think those would be just a little on the rare side now a days. Unlike the 292, 300, 225 & 4.0, they didn't build millions of them. Technology has finally caught up, as in semi- affordable, and made Turbos a legit option. We've always known they're the great equalizer. The means to control them was just so out of reach.

I built the hot side unequal length with the hope of not sounding like something Japanese. It actually worked, with the cam hes running, 6 into 1, super 50 muffler with a cherry bomb as a resonator it's pretty throaty. She made 363 wheel on pump gas through a tremec tko with 3.73 final drive. But, torque, shes at 491. It hauls the mail for a big ol girl. I'd really like to see what we can do with some C16 in the lines. For the life of me I cant remember what head we used. I built it 3 years and about 200 shots to the head from fellow light heavyweights later.
What??? Amish Mike not wanting to break 400hp, this years breeding season must have left him very fatigued!!!
Love seeing an inline build!
They should do a 50’s 327 straight 8 from a Packard!
I like inliners but they r short 2 holes The Buick
BB IL ran 55 to 6
.5 . Two blocks,10 thou.laps
Great video! I was always impressed with the rare 302 GMC I-6 truck engine.
Thank you for keeping it all USA made! It matters!
Whys that?
@@lukegale717 because buying American keeps Americans at work, it keeps money circulating in our country, it helps our economy and especially in times like this we need it
Topolinski's reactions to dyno runs is gold!!
Teflon tape on the turbo oil feed XD
Second go around because this is so cool... I'd like to see a follow up on how the real world drive ability is, and what kind of gas mileage it's getting. 500+ ft trq is insane.
This thing has the power and torque curves of a turbo diesel. That graph is a little wonky. It only shows ~337 HP and ~440TQ not 376 and 510
Saw that too lol.
510 torque 😳
Worked at a machining house from the eighties and build 292 intake and exhaust combos for UPS trucks. Remember machinery tag stating see oiling bulletin 9-12-1941. Thinking we built these until 1990's.
I thought that thing was going to shoot off the screen.
Thank you for the video. Currently restoring my 1965 c10. I love this idea and I think i will do the same.
Do Ford inline 6 300 Turbocharged! Everyone wants to see that. Even more impressive would be as close to stock, how much can the i6 do compared to the Chevy 292.
Nah supercharge the 300
Literally everyone with an I.Q. over 75 doesn't want to see, or hear, about Ford products. Please stop this talk! Think about your Mother!
@@hawkdsl lol
@@hawkdsl Idk looks like the majority of the comments are not about the results of the 292 but the request to do a 300. We all know the Ford 6 already won the longevity test.
@@johnhill7480 Drugs, fatty foods, the wrong woman even... Has made you so delusional, that there may be no hope for you. Good luck man.
I really enjoy watching all the details and build process you guys put in your videos. Hats off men, keep up the good work.
376HP and 510LB FT TQ nice.....
Is it me? I never saw anywhere near that on the graph. Still impressive as hell.
Truck probably for towing and hauling so they wanted a lot of torque.
At Last! The American inline sixes getting the kind of attention (complete modern technology) that should have happened long ago! I would love to see episodes of the Ford 300 six, the 4.0 AMC/Jeep, and the 225 slant six modified in exactly the same way!
So much potential has been ignored for so long!!!!!
Hay check out TH-cam." Aussie ford Barra xr6 turbo in speedboat" sight name Sam tweetie 13 min long shows Australian engineered straight 6 cylinder going up Aussie outback country river travelling heaps of KMs miles in no time.great scenery and great driving skills.mad engine goes like a rocket it sings.enjoy watching American Bros from down Under.
That thing is making 5.9L Cummins Diesel power 💪
Hot Chrysler 440" V8 power!
That is just killer performance!
This is exactly what I wanted to see today :)
Turbocharged Chevy straight sixes are very common in Brazil, we have plug n play turbo kits for them here.
Jezzzz pat. You got enough pens?
I would like to see you build one from the ground up, Installing everything heavy duty, roller rockers, the works. With a supercharger. Do the same with a 300 six Ford. Love these shows!!!!
I'd pay good money to see a Pontiac OHC I-6 build like this... Stick it in, say, an earty 70's base model Firebird with a six speed trans...
I have the OHC engine but for now it's gonna go into a squarebody truck to test it. Starting with a buick T type turbo, we'll go from there.
I’d like to see a similar build out of a 300 Ford and also I’d like to see a build up of either a 351M or 400 Ford! Yes I know the latter two are looked down upon in some groups but they deserve to be remembered
Yes, I've been wondering how a 400 can run with 351C 4V heads, or the equivalent.
In Brazil, with heavy preparation + turbo this motor make over 2.500 hps and 170 kgmf of torque. Search em YT for "Opala Celso Camargo" videos.
Extremely loved engine here in Brazilian drag racing scene. It was our "muscle car", as fuel is super expensive here, and V8s, unfortunately, rare and expensives. 1320 has a video showing what the guys do with what we have here. Nice to see you guys doing something with the GM 250.
The turbo wouldn't have been able to sustain boost, seeing torque go down in the last pull. You might have gotten 400hp but thats maxing out the turbocharger with all risks comming with that. Nice power though.
Love this channel and the straight six!
@ 13:26 Graph shows 425 ftlbs
Then he and the screen caption claims over 509?
@ 13.26 Graph says 330 HP
Then he and the screen caption claims over 376?
I saw that too
I'm not big on Chevy engines but this one is really cool
Fantastic! Does anybody know where I can order this boosted engine as a turn-key crate engine?
I highly doubt it tbh
This is mind blowing. I have a falcon I was going to v8 swap but this makes me want to build the inline 6.
You should build the chevy 4.2 inline 6 from the trailblazers next and compare new vs classic.
I love these inline 6 builds
I'd love to see y'all do some work with the 4200 I6, since a certain network that shall not be named requires a subscription to watch more than 5 minutes of their video on them. (if you know, you know.)
You and me both. I used to watch all their shows but when I couldn't even get Logged in for the free trial, tried creating a profile a couple of times, I said the hell with it.
Looks like the guy from "Always Sunny in Philly" had to pick up some side hustle hours turning wrenches.
The hair gel budget must be through the roof!!
Greasy.....
you must really be into guys...did not even notice, care
Fashion Bi diva.
I think you’re on the wrong TH-cam channel.
This engine would be a great swap for the 216 CI in my 1953 Chevy pickup with the 1986 S-10 T-5 transmission I installed last year. This transmission swap totally changed my truck, and this 292 would make it a real beast.
this 194/292 family of sixes is longer than the old 216/261 series--look for hood bracing clearance problems with the front of the valve cover
...292 was NEVER installed in a CAR from the factory...strictly a truck engine!....
dyer2cycle
I think in South Africa they may have been found in some Holden bodied, chev badged vehicles.. but I have not seen one personally.
I have heard this from a guy who brings Holden vehicles back to Australia from South Africa . Can anyone from SA please clarify if the tall deck motor was factory fitted?
I had a 76 caprice wagon that come with 3speed on the column and 292 it was ordered like that. So there was a bubble in the hood for the valve cover. Looked funny but man that thing would pull a house down
Okay now put the red spring back in so the boys don't tear it up. You had your fun on the dino, but don't put it in the truck at full levels.
I know we can break 400 if we ad a heavier spring...
......NOOOOO! 🤣
The heavier spring is for the wastegate valve--heavier spring will allow for more boost--yessssssss!
Hey guys. The first combine I owned was a Massy Ferguson 410 with (get this) a Chevy 292 in-line 6 as power plant. It never wanted for power!! BUT it did like gasoline! I had a 48 gallon gas tank and I normally would put two tanks a day through it‼️ But it did the job………👍
