How to Position Parts for 3D Printing | Arranging for the BEST Results!

- So this is a long video for a reason! I'll be guiding you through my own methods and thought process for arranging parts in Cura (or really any slicing software like S3D or Prusa).
Orientation is key and I hope to explain why i take so much time to do this and what i look for.
This is NOT a settings tutorial. That's in another video!
On this video i will focus on an Iron Man Helmet (Duh) and show you what to keep an eye out for.

This helped a lit. I just got a Darth Vader helmet for my sister, and I have a Ancycubic Kobra 2 max, but I know I still want to conserve filament. I will be trying these tips out for sure. I am having a lot of issues with support on some of my prints that is driving me insane. So glad I subscribed to your channel.

Please make a video on how to use Support Blockers and the Do's and Don'ts of them ? Loving the Slicr3d software ! Working on a Vyper printer at the moment, must get a printer with a larger bed . Thanks for passing your knowledge on this work along to us Newbies !
One tip is on slic3r all you have to do is right click on the part you want and select export stl from the menu that pops up and it will only export that part!!

FYI prusa slicer will look at your model and find all the flat sides to it and you can literally just click on whatever side you want to go towards the base really saves time having to move models around find out the best fit.
Edit: all these free programs have their perks and tools. Cura still gets in on the rotation

Awesome video, never messed with the support blocker because I didn't understand their function. Just shaved 2 1/2 hours off a part because it was supporting on one side and not the other (it's a mirror piece). Blocked out the one side that randomly got support and saved time and material!

@@FranklyBuilt It was a small overhang at the very top of the model that bridging should take care of no problem, plus its on the interior of the model so if it droops it won't mess it up!

Are there any tricks for making supports release from your prints a lot easier ?? Sometimes it is a real bear to remove supports without wrecking the print.

I did my chin very similar if not exactly like your model and mine has the worst finish where the chin touched the suports. Do you just prime over and sand or do your pieces come out smooth even where the supports touched?

@@ilMioMondoSulTuoTubo Flashforge slicer software lets you do it. it is great. But i think you can only use it with Flashforge printers.

Question - wrt to the jaw print, do you take into account the direction the layers are printed? Specifically, the back of the jaw toward ears that are maybe 6mm X 6mm and long. The risk is they can snap off at a layer line.
I need to catch up with you other videos - Cura now offers Tree supports which are very cool to reduce material.

Hey frank, I’ve been watching you on tic tok for a while now, and you inspired me to get a 3d printer. I bought the ender 3 just like you said and I was just wondering if you make the helmet dome at 96 percent does that mean you have to print everything else at 96 percent?
yes, or the other parts wont line up.

How do you figure out what size fits your head without printing like 10 that don’t fit?
Great upload! Help me a ton. My jaw doesn’t seem to be lining up with my faceplate, though. Have you ever ran into this issue, Frank? I’m printing in PLA and using the same model from the description

@@FranklyBuilt I’ll definitely try, but it seems like the jaw is actually wider than the faceplate. Maybe PLA warping because of ambient temps or something?
I did my face plate (do3d mk85) upright as well. I did the jaw upright chin down and I kept getting warping 13-16 hours in. I'm moving to the dome see if I can get that one.

Hey Frank, I really want to print a mark 3 but the helmet will take 3/10 of my 1000 g filament spool and might be too small. Should I do it?
Great video, many thanks for them all, they are a great help with my 3d printing experience, I have a question though, I'm printing the top part of the helmet upside down like in the video with 70 degree support, do you also get a weird deformity on the upside down curve away from where the supports are placed? I plan on trying to fix it and fill it with wood filler but just curious if you have the same issue when printing the top part of the helmet?
Hey! Sometimes yeah. You can try a 60 angle to helmet mitigate it
using cura myself and I feel pretty confident in my placements and slicing. BUT! the last two print was just unlucky. with 1 hour left the y axis just went right and ruined a 24 hour print and the next print I tried was 11 hours in and made an afro (I was at work and it had stuck to the plate when I left) so much wast I feel heartbroken.

Hello good afternoon, I love how the helmet has been, I have an ender 3 and when I put the largest part of the helmet to print I have also oriented it so that it does not create much support for me but how do you remove the base that it creates in the back of the helmet? do you use an electric sander or cutting pliers? is that I would like it to be as smooth and homogeneous as possible, I wait for a response, thank you very much and greetings

Thanks for the video, Frank! Very helpful. Any challenges using the Cura slicer instead of the the one that Creality offers? Just curious as I just bought a CR10 V2. Any particular tips to getting Cura set-up to work with different printers. I have a Prusa and Elegoo Mars and typically just use the ones that come with them. However an all in one option, especially if it's more powerful, would be great.
Literally easiest thing ever to set up. Just download and select add printer. It’s amazing. Sadly Creality slicer sucks lol 😂
Frankly Built I did it. It is pretty intuitive. There’s no CR-10 V2 in the list of printers. Think it’s safe to use the CR-10s?
2 thins I noticed..I see your printing in super detail, is that really worth it if your just gonna sand and prime it smooth? And also how much i love prusa's paint on support feature, lets you just paint on exactly where you want to put supports. Still got a ton of info from this video tho, TYSM for all the help on this project so far!
That’s odd I never print in super detail. The details never really effects my quality much just increases time. I should make a new video for this lol it’s been a while

what is the best 3d printer to start off with to build things like these ironman suits?
You need to turn down the volume audio settings of your videos. They are stupid loud by default as they play relative to other standard videos on TH-cam. It’s jolting when they start playing before turning down to volume to accommodate.
Fusion 360 has an option to oriente the part in the best way for as lass support as possible
But you have to pay for fusion 360 so it’s not ideal for beginners. It’s a good way to deter people away from the hobby. This is just basic.

This was a fantastic video! Do you think there will ever be software that automatically calculates the most optimal position for minimal values? As in, user selects minimal print time, total material or support percentage and the software optimizes it?

I just have a couple questions, what’s your take on supports vs tree supports, and do you know any ways to either split an stl in ways that aren’t completely parallel to an axis (so the opposite of what you showed) or to physically cut the printed part without damaging it? I printed the mark 39 helmet but the faceplate is attached to the jaw and I wanted to separate them and add magnets to let it open and close.

MrBluePenguin hey! So what Duncan said is true but you can also use Meshmixer to make complex cuts. That’s a tutorial for another day tho lol

Hi, I’ve tried Slic3r multiple times and it keeps coming up with ‘Not responding’. I have upgraded my graphics driver and intel driver and it still doesn’t work. Do you know how to fix this problem or possibly know a different free program where I can cut objects? Thanks

I have a rule in cura, if it is more than 20 percent support, I will be re position it, and make it less
My computer can’t load preview all it will do is crash sadly lol I never thought it would do this
re: glitches in Cura. I saved a mando helmet GCode and noticed two lines running round the finished print at two different layer heights.
While removing the supports, the helmet ripped in two as if it had been designed to. I put it down to a filament problem. I then printed a second helmet from the same GCode and it had the same two fault lines at the same two heights. This time the helmet tried to rip in two at the other fault line. I was expecting it this time and stopped it in time to strengthen everything with superglue and bicarbonate of soda. Is this a Cura glitch? Have you seen that before?
Also. would this iron man dome print without supports? I'm finding a lot of helmets can be printed with supports competely blocked in the dome.

That error is a product of VERY poor error trapping by the programmers.

good info on this video but two things wrong. 1 your support infill density is way too high like insanely too high. I'm at 10% at most for supports. 2 who uses regular supports in cura anymore try using tree supports way better and a hell of a lot less material used with tree supports also that almost fall right off when the prints are done
I think you missed the point of this video lol I even said “were not going into advanced settings on this one” lol it’s for positioning only. That’s it. I used tree supports on my entire suit with 2-5% support density. The next video is about settings and quality and supports. Tree supports are the future lol it’s amazing how many people don’t know about them. However. Sometimes normal supports are better for stability
