    Rich,
The 3 wire connector is the crank position sensor AKA "CKP" in schematics. On all 3.1/3100 engines; this sensor picks up the crank timing and provides it to the Ignition module for base timing. The ignition module then generates a CRANK POS (CPS) signal to send to the ECM for injector pulse timing. Since you lost the crank timing reference to the ignition module; it would not trip codes as it thinks the engine stalled out (mechanically). I only know this as i used to hack GM ECM's!

I have learned a new phrase "the wiggle test". I'm so gonna use that. You can see why reverse brought out the issue. Plenty of movement from the load on those old mounts. I bet this customer was thrilled with this repair.

I sure like the way you show diagnostic effort rather than just straight part replacement. Good work.

This is s good reminder to check the electrical connections and those seals as you never know who did what to a car before..

Pretty obvious when shifted into reverse the engine rocks forward. That is likely what caused the loose connection to break the electrical power. Thanks for the awesome video! This clearly demonstrates how we techs must think about all aspects of operation in order to understand a problem like this.

Nice repair Mr Rich, it can some times be a proper pain to isolate a problem like that.

Good job. My first thought was something with the idle controller (often won't show a code in my limited experiences). But seeing the way the engine twists when put into R, it sure looks like you found the problem.

As soon as you mentioned the car, I had a feeling that's what it was. Chevy's had that problem. I had an 86 Buick with that 4Tech engine with the REALLY bad pulley design. If it got any water on the engine, you might as well forget going anywhere until it dried out.

  • @justanirishlad

Obviously, when the transmission is placed into reverse, it moved forward, likely causing the connector to come loose. I'll bet when the a/c compressor kicks on the engine moves slightly too, causing the connection to fail. Great job, wish I could find a competent mechanic like you closer to me.

i was wondering if you could make a video on how to adjust the body panels on a saturn , a Vue specifically but any saturn would do. The panels on my Vue could use some adjusting to line things up and Im unsure how to proceed

Got a Pontiac Grand Am with a 3400 that dose the same thing and since these are the same family of engines I’m curious if you got any answers for me cause mine dose it when ever. It could go almost a whole year then randomly stalls going 110 kilometres on the highway or 50 kilometres in the city dosnt matter if the engines hot or cold dosnt matter of its hot or cold outside. I’ve changed the IAC TPS IAT MAP and MAF still no change. I’ve cleaned the throttle body and IAC value still no change. I replace all relays in the fuse box even got a new battery cleaned the terminals good and put them on nice and tight put fuel cleaner in my tank changed the alternator spark plugs wires and coil pack even replaced the air filter thinking there might be air restrictions and I did the same to the fuel filter. Like I’m out of ideas now and too much money in next I’m thinking crankshaft sensors which there are two on this car and maybe camshaft sensor.

Good catch. I still can't figure out how or why the weather seal went missing unless someone else was in there and took it out for some reason.

If for some reason the connector is not attached to the knock sensor (front above the oil filter) the same issues will result and the engine light will be on. Ask me how I know! Engine will run funny, lack power, shifting is odd and mileage goes down the tubes. Have fun finding a OBDI code scanner.

That engine seems to have excessive movement when you put it into reverse at about 4:25. If that is normal, you can see how wiggling the wire and placing the car in reverse caused the intermittent.

Check your oil for milkiness. Those old 3100s are known for their cheap, plastic head gaskets falling apart and letting coolant into the heads

Nothing like old school thinking to solve a problem. Dealer would have just plugged it into a computer and not be able to duplicate the problem. Sorry that will be $200.00... great job..

  • @jeffreygoodwin6932

Why would you cut it off instead of pulling the rubber out of the back of that plug the orange piece of rubber you pull that out and get a really small pick or really small flat-head and push it the next to the metal prong and pull the wire and radar that plastic connector and do the same with the other one and then switch them out you don't cut your wiring harness it comes apart reply to go to came right off the terminals and you could have changed the plastic and cleaned up the terminals with wire brush
