  • My moms 2000 Malibu started giving problems. Hard to start, loping and dying at idle, loss of power, Smell of rotten eggs from the exhaust, and the check engine light was on. I located the problem. It was the Fuel regulator. This film is to tell of the problems, and how to check and replace the regulator.

    For the fuel pressure regulator there is a clip with one bolt holding the feed/return lines on the rear or left cylinder head. Loosen the bolt and the lines will have enough slack to pull up the regulator to get a wrench on it. No need to remove the throttle body. You can relieve pressure on the rail where the test port is, just push in the Schrader valve with a pocket screwdriver. Make sure to wrap the port with a paper towel, usually not a lot of pressure. Don't forget to replace the o rings, apply fuel or clean engine oil for installation.
    The fuel pump actually feeds the rail first and the regulator controls the fuel pressure returning to the tank/pump. This is a common fix for these 3.1/3.4 engines.

    Wished i saw this earlier....Car died and changed the ignition module...by strong advisement...My common sense brain said to look at the fuel pump or sonething related to it ..
    SURE thing ,it turned out to ve the Fuel Pressure Regulator .
    I took off the vacuum hose to the Regulator and the Engine ran horribly...wanted to die out and eventually did. ...
    He rhanks for this ...
    This is giving me peace of mind .
    BTW .... you have a great speaking voice ,good vocabulary for a guy your age ...peace

    Smell of Rotten Eggs is not fuel pressure regulator.... it's related... the dumping of fuel... unburned, half-burned, all that good stuff has destroyed the catalytic converter. DONT FORGET TO LET EVERYONE KNOW TO CHANGE THE OIL AFTERWARDS DUE TO UNBURNED FUEL PASSING THE RINGS.... WHICH CONTAMINATES THE OIL... Good Luck... if maintained properly these engine were designed for 400,000 miles!!!

      Glad you pointed that out to him about the CAT. and the oil ..
      Does maintaining include changing the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets every 100K or less or so - along with a new water pump every 100 K or so, harmonic balancer's, and the SEALS ,this thing dripped oil from 12K miles or less . I know cars need maintenance - but what kinds .. and what it takes to do these jobs and how often. I am not impressed with this engine . Maybe for a GM it qualifies as good .

    I see that you have low windshield fluid as your car dinged and I see the light. I drive a 2000 Malibu as well. I did fill it up with a gallon of windshield fluid and got rid of the light for two days, but no leaks. Did you ever find a way to get rid of the light?

    Thanks for the informative video. Also, right around the 12:45 where you showed the vacuum hose to the regulator that you pulled off to check, right next to it there is a L shaped rubber connector that connects to that small white hose, do you know what that is for? Mine has broken off and is running with nothing connected to it. Thanks

    I have a P0137 02 Circuit low voltage (Bank 1 sensor 2) .. Sometimes I really have to hold the starter for it to fire up.. At times it has a really rough idle, sounds like it has a big cam but it doesn't.. I'm pretty sure I feel a slight missfire under hard acceleration.

    I just had the same job done on a Buick Century with the GM 3100 in it. The engine was having troubles running at idle, and when it could: it struggled. Starting required extra cranking, and driving required putting the vehicle in N at stops withe some feathered revving.
    My mechanic told me that I was running the risk of a car fire as the fuel coming from the ruptured fuel regulator was spewing fuel onto hot exhaust AND because the injectors were pounding fuel into my cylinders, it's very possible that gas got into the soot of the catalytic converter as well as gas in my oil.
    An oil change and new part later, he told me he tried getting spewed fuel off the engine/exhaust as best as possible. He also recommended driving HARD on accelerations to burn out anything that might be in the catalytic converter.
    My question with this job: How much driving do I have to do before my car is no longer a fire hazard? I do live in a very frozen northern part of the U.S. (we seem temps below zero this time of year almost everyday)

    • @bmaiceman
      @bmaiceman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Been a while since I did that video. But as I remember. Fuel regulator was bad letting gas into vacuum system causing rich mix. Causing black smoke.

  • @stevooliver3877
    @stevooliver3877 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That regulator sometimes gets stuck closed or open ..which makes pressure too high or low ..diaphragm may be busted cause gas getting in the line dumping raw gas into the intake causing misfire on 1,3 or 5 cylinders since the vacuum port is on bank one..but this problem will have warning signs when it is going out like runs rough & hard starts but in early stages it clears up after hits operating temperature..narrow down problems by simple fix to major fixes..like first you can in the car in the morning turn all fans,radio off & turn the key to hear fuel pump to see if it runs then shuts off before start..if it don't stop means pressure is leaking or valve is stuck open causing low fuel pressure

    My 02 Malibu starts fairly easily and idles fine for about 15 seconds or so, then acts like it is going to die idle drops really low and chugs. Will finally catch itself and then the idle goes way up. Also loses power occasionally through parking lots going slow.

    I just bought a 97 malibu for $500 with 68000 and some change on it i changed the fuel pump in the gas tank the whole housing car started ran good drove it home..maybe a week down the line i go to drive it and it has no acceleration power whats the problem is it minor or major

    • @bmaiceman
      @bmaiceman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be extremely difficult to make that kind of determination without more information exclamation are there any check engine lights on?? How long has the car been sitting before you bought it?? What's the condition of the fuel in the fuel tank?? Did you change the fuel filter when you replace the fuel pump?? Aside from losing power how does the engine run?? Does that idle well does it lope does it stutter or try to die? When you say it loses power does that mean that it will run fine when you're cruising along but when you really step on it there's no guts??

    • @kevincarbins4524
      @kevincarbins4524 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idles dope asf... Just from a regular takeoff i have no acceleration power and when i try to stomp down it really loses power

    • @bmaiceman
      @bmaiceman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Carbins well that seems like a very cheap price for a car with so little miles on it! Assuming the miles are accurate. So if it was me the first thing I think I would do is change the fuel filter and see what that looks like. A plug fuel filter can Rob power from an engine in a hurry. Next thing I do is check the plugs see what they look like how are they running spark plugs can tell you a lot about the way your engine is operating. How did the engine run before you replace the pump?? Did you purchase the car has a non running vehicle knowing that the fuel pump was bad and then replace it to get it back on the road??

    • @bmaiceman
      @bmaiceman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Carbins hmmmm ok. Well like I said I think my original advice with stand at this point. Check the fuel filter replace it! Check the plugs see what they look like. Since you were pulling the plugs anyway I think I would perform a compression test on the engine to see what the compression is. There is one other possibility that I can think of off the top of my head as long as the engine is not running too rich from a fuel regulator problem. it is possible that the catalytic converter for whatever reason is plugged up and is starving the engine for power. Although with the car having as little miles as you say it has I find that to be less likely. So start by checking the fuel filter replacing it, checking the spark plugs doing a compression check. I'm assuming this car is equipped with the V6 engine??

      @kevincarbins4524 5 ปีที่แล้ว
