2004 Buick Century 3.1 V6 stalling, rough idle, missing, P0172 fixed

  • This video is a follow-up to my previous video ( • 2004 Buick Century GM ... ) on my 2004 Buick Century. After the previous repair, the engine would still stall occasionally and was hard to start after it had been running. I borrowed a scan tool and found that the fuel trim was running rich which set the P0172 code. Also I was getting misfires on cylinders 5 and 6. For some reason the vehicle would stall mainly in a low throttle right hand turn. The problem was the fuel pressure regulator was leaking fuel into the vacuum line causing a super rich condition. I had a little trouble getting the regulator out due to some clearance issues. The video shows how I got the old one out and the new one in.

    I did the same thing on 00 century with 111K miles. it died on me during an errand misfired bad no codes. Ended up doing the reseal of intake gasket, plugs, wires, fuel regulator, ultrasonic cleaned injectors, putting it back together.

    Why is there a fuse missing above the fuel pump relay? It's supposed to show on the diagram that it's a fuel pump speed control relay and I was wondering is it supposed to be missing. I don't have mine on there either.

    • @diywithdave3186
      @diywithdave3186  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fuse blocks differ between vehicles due to the option content on the vehicle. Auto companies do that to save money. They don't provide wiring for circuits that are not needed with the given content for the vehicle. Fuse diagrams are not always customized for a given vehicle content, they do one diagram that covers everything, even though some of the fuses are not present on every vehicle. That is a general answer, I am not sure what that the specific fuse you are asking about. If you look down inside the hole where you think the fuse is missing you should be able to see the difference between a slot with a fuse and one that does not have a fuse. A fuse will not be secure in a slot where there is not supposed to be one, it will be loose and not stay in. Hope that helps.

    I have a 2005 buick century with the 3.1l v6 198,000 miles on it and That fuel pressure regulator has been leaking for almost a year now.. Yesterday it started idling rough an i looked it up and found your video so im going to be replacing it soon. An i wanted to ask you this... Do you have any idea why my motor is knocking. Its not a lifter noise. Like tick tick tick its more of a clack clack clack. It used to go away when the motor warmed up but now it is a constant sound. Any idea what is makin this sound?

    • @diywithdave3186
      @diywithdave3186  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know about that one. If you are dumping a lot of extra fuel in the engine with the bad fuel regulator, you may have some carbon build-up some place that it doesn't belong. If it were me I would fix the problem I knew about and run it a while to see if the problem is still there. Make sure the oil is clean. You might also get a stethoscope and see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from. It could be an alternator bearing or something like that. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can comment on the noise.

      A Knock is typically a symptom of a oil starved motor so probably have bad bearings. I hope that’s not the case, if it just run it into the ground. Or pull another motor from the local junkyard.

      Add about 12oz of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil. Do not put things like STP Engine lubricator that makes problem worse. I had same problem. Run the car 200 miles or so then change oil. Add M.M.O again the sound should eventually go away. My buick did same thing cold weather really loud clack clack clack.

      If you have already replaced the fuel regulator, the only other thing that I have heard of on these engines is a damaged head gasket. I never did that on mine but there are videos out there that show how to do it.

    I have a 1999 v6 Buick park ave with a p0306 and a p0172. It's running really rough and feels like it's constantly going to die. What are the most likely causes as I don't have a lot of money and don't want to throw a bunch of money into a car that I may not even be owning in eight months as I hope to get a Honda or Toyota about a decade newer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless!

    • @diywithdave3186
      @diywithdave3186  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not familiar with P0306, The p0172 means that the engine controller thinks you are getting more fuel than you really need in the combustion chamber. It makes that conclusion by data that it gets from the oxygen (O2) sensor on the exhaust system. So it could be that your O2 sensor is bad, your catalytic converter is bad, or you really are getting too much fuel. I don't have one of these engines, so I don't know what the common reasons for these codes would be. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

      DIY with Dave thanks for the response. I changed the ignition coils and checked the fuel line first. Didn't fix the problem. I went to change the spark plug before I plucked out $100 on the ignition control module. Low and behold the wire was fried from being to close to the exhaust system. Thanks again for your time.

      Also the the replacement of all three (6) coils cleared the p0172. In tip top shape for a 20yo, minimally serviced vehicle with 185,000.

    You need to leave the T-30 torque screw in otherwise it's a pain to get the 24 mm or 15/16th nut loose from the bottom of the part..once the nut is freed then have fun breaking the torque screw free..
