    I had a 1992 Beretta 3.1 base with exhaust, intake, AIT mod, and HyperChips daughter board. Went from 135hp to 170hp. Then a 1996 Z26 3100 with 60mm t.body, 2.5" exhaust, cai, AIT mo, 8mm wires. Went from 155hp to 190hp.

    I just installed a 56 mm throttle body on my 3100 engine. I also have a short ram intake, L67 coil packs, and a modified exhaust. The 56 mm throttle body made the biggest impression. It throws down. The one thing I will make clear is this. The 3100 responds very well to mods. I also have a modified stock air box if I want to put it back on.

      On the exhaust I took the u bend and the cat out. No headers though. I have catback dual exhaust with flowmaster 40 knockoffs. It sounds good.

      Nice! make sure you change the down pipe off the manifold, it is double walled to keep the sound down, and the inner pipe is usually around 1.75"- 1-7/8" diameter! going to 2.5" down pipe on my old 3400 Lumina was good for 3 tenths in the 1/4 mile!

    I like the idea of this mod. I have a 2004 Century. If I’m right from reading your comments mine is not a small port being made after 99? One other question: is it worth it to do this mod without any other modifications to the stock setup, or should I also do some exhaust to max out the benefits? Thanks!

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you have the large port intakes. It will make a difference even with out doing the the exhaust. You could even do the 65mm but it's not a quick swap out, you would need to port the plenum to match it!

  • @lf881
    @lf881 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Sorry if this is a silly question. I know a larger throttle body results in small HP gains. But how is gas mileage affected? Would I get slightly better or worse mpg? I want to try this on my 02 malibu.

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Milage will depend on how heavy your right foot is! It should be the same if not slightly better I would imagine. Friend of mine had headers/exhaust, 65mm TB, and a tune and had no problem getting 30+ mpg in the summer on the highway!

    • @kainhall
      @kainhall ปีที่แล้ว

      your 02 has the smooth intake..... so its already got the large ports
      the only part you would need to swap is the throttle body..... and ya.... 5 or 10 HP, and only in the high RPM
      .
      MPG should not be effected at all..... as the MPG advantage you get from smaller ports making higher air speed would be controlled by the heads/lower intake ports, not the TB

    Ive been searching everywhere n cant find anything I have a 2003 3.1l malibu I believe it should be the lg8 motor, currently both heads seem to be leaking, needs a head gasket replacement but since ima do that is it worth me getting the 3400 heads and intake manifolds??? I just ordered the 56mm tb

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3400 heads and intakes are the same as the 3100 in 2003. I would do some porting like in my other video, th-cam.com/video/YMYVr01HUDQ/w-d-xo.html
      Other than that you could install some headers while everything is a part!

    Someday I'd like 2 switch my 99 3.1 upper plenum and possibly lower using a 2002 or any yr 2000+ 3.4 but the position of egr valve is biggest concern,, it's very difficult to remove the egr feed tube from rear manifold to match it also if I were 2 change the lower intake I'd need to rewire the injectors w isn't too hard or change the hole upper harness from newer 3.4.. u cant just switch the injectors themselves (re-use existing ones) because it's a known thing that they wont come out even other mechanics have said same thing.., they just simply become too stuck in bore n wont remove with out destroying em so re-wiring would b better option.. newer v6's have different style injectors and plug is also however I believe the wire colors r same and even if they weren't u can determine w wire is trigger n w is ground,, some day I'll look into doing this

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to get them out, sometimes it dose takes a while. I usually soak them with penetration fluid, work them some and soak again, repeat until they come out! Lol
      You could always use the older 3400 plenum until you change the egr or make an adapter. Unfortunately I don't think anyone makes an egr adapter anymore for this swap.

  • @tristanhirschman4412
    @tristanhirschman4412 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I have a 95 Grand Prix with the older 31OO so small port and 52mm throttle body; is it possible to put the newer 31OO plenum on with the bigger ports and a 56mm to have a bit better air flow plus the notch for the idle air is already there, or would the ports on the lower intake be small like the old intake meaning the lower intake would need to get swapped for any sort of difference

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you would need to swap the lower intake to match the upper intake. Also the 00+ 3100 and 3400 only use 6 bolts to bolt the plenum to the lower intake. You would see the best results upgrading to the 3400/00+ 3100 heads that have the larger intake valves... if your going down to the lower intake!
      I would start with the 56mm TB and see how you like it. The gain is noticeable!

    What turbo would be good for a 3100 v6 or would I have to change the intake manifold to a 3400 to even fit one ? (It’s for a 2004 Buick century). Also would I need a bigger throttle body?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larger throttle body isn't necessary but dose improve power. I have a 3100 in my 1993 Chevy truck with a turbo from 1995 Chevy 6.5l diesel (t3t4), its making around 235-240hp on 6-7psi of boost! That turbo would be fun on a 3100/3400 in a car, or a even a Ebay gt3582! You will want to stay away from anything with t25 flange because most will be too small unless you get into the high dollar specialty stuff.

    • @modeverything1

  • @raymondsmith6315
    @raymondsmith6315 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is very interesting because I don't think "performance" when I think of the GM 3.1. Do you have any dyno numbers to us the before and after effects of these mods? I do love it when anyone takes a nontypical ( example, everyone plays with ford 302s and Chevy 350s) motor and makes it better. I'm curious because I have this motor on my back up car that rarely gets driven (1997 Oldsmobile "under" Achieva)

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry no dyno numbers lol, maybe one day in the future! It is a noticeable improvement over the stock 52mm. I would guess that it would be around 5hp...
      These engines have potential, considering the heads on a 3400 flow better than a 302 ford or a 3800 v6! Lol just not much after market performance unless you're thinking outside the box!

    • @kainhall
      @kainhall ปีที่แล้ว

      the small port 3100 definitely runs out of air flow around 5800-6200 rpm
      .
      if you went from a small port/small TB...... to large everything..... ~15HP (thats what GM rated the large port at over the small port)
      maybe with the large TB also on the large ports.... maybe 20HP
      .
      but going from 160HP to 180 is a noticeable change
      and it sets you up for larger cams, higher comp, ETC ETC ETC

      Don't know much about the 1L, or what tools you have available... but simple stuff would be to bypass the TB heater hoses (if equipped) don't recommend it it you are in a colder climate, or maybe add a override switch to turn your fan on whenever needed like on the return road at the dragstrip! Hope this gives you some ideas!

    Is it possible to do a full 3100 to 3400 swap on a 98 malibu? What needs to be done? Majority of Used 3100 has lifter failure. Even maybe a 3500 bottom swap?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. The simplest would be a 3400. You will need to get a 99 and older plenum to match your EGR mount. Same with the 3500, but you will need an external crank trigger to make it work.
      You can use a newer plenum but you will have to make an adapter for the EGR or I believe re-wire a newer EGR valve to work.

    Hey just stumbled across your video on the 3100 ,I just bought a 2002 Chevy Malibu , looking forward to doing some 3.4 upgrades....what's the best place to start?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would start with the larger throttle body and a higher flowing muffler or a full 2.25"-2.5" cat back. PCM tuning goes a long way on these vehicles, too!

      Thanks for the response,I just picked up the throttle body great video btw,thanks again, you being a GM guy you might be able to answer my question as well ,what gives the GM v6 that infamous grumble sound, I love that sound,seems more in Pontiac it seems,I got the Malibu to have that sound

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Think its mostly the firing order and the exhaust/exhaust manifold design. I think in stock configuration the 3400 sounds best in the torrent/equinox! But I think the intake design might be part of their sound.

      Hey I figured I'd ask a question so I was at the junkyard stumbled across the Pontiac firebird with 3.4 in it , will that upper and lower and plenum fit in the 02 Malibu, Orwell that entire engine drop right in, will it bolt to my transmission

    • @modeverything1

      You would have to use the iron heads with that intake and it would make less power than stock.

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 3400 would be almost a direct bolt in. If your bottom end is still good I would rebuild the heads. If you want more power you could look into doing a 3500 swap!

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What year Buick do you have? If you have a 99 and order, the best way to get near you 200hp goal is to change the heads/intakes out for the 2000+ 3100/3400's along with some mild porting (like I did in my porting video!) Headers, 2.25"-2.5" exhaust, 65mm TB and a custom pcm tune/calibration. If you can't find headers for your car, you might be able to use 3500 LX9 (04-06 malibu 05-06 G6)exhaust manifolds with a custom crossover
      Other than that you would be looking at a cam swap/engine build or a turbo build. I have a near stock 2000+ 3100 in my truck and its making approximately 240hp with 6psi of boost!

      @@modeverything1 Thanks for your response, I have a 2000 and I put the throttle body from the 3400 engine to my 3100. I also have a drop in K&N filter, I was looking into a CAI but the stock intake is already by the front fender so I feel like there's no point. I could try a custom tune with what I have now and probably get some more gain. You seem to have much valuable knowledge about these engines, as long as I got that century I'll probably be back for more help with future stuff, thank you!
      Also, do I have to port out the intakes on my 3100 to accommodate the larger holes on the 3400 head?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  3 ปีที่แล้ว
