My known basics of the zombie apocalypse:
1: start doing cardio in case you get stuck in a hoard.
2: be cautious to people you find.
3: always have a backup weapon.
4: create a signal for important stuff.
5: wear leather clothes.
6: helmets.
7: dont let your ego take over. You will die easily.
8: have a backup gun if your backup weapon is broken.
9: find food but not too much.
10: mind over anger.
11: silent weapons are best because loud weapons can attract zombies.
12: know how to make a fire.
13: find clothes.
14: dont try to act tough, be tough.
15: find shelter
16: flashlights.
17: save water. 1 gallon per day for a person.
18: you will have to k1ll even with some random strangers
19: dont have too many people in your group. I’d say 3 to 6 is fine.
20: always be prepared for the worse. Crying doesnt make anything better.
And when we're going outside, tape a magazine to your arms so in case they bite it, you won't be harmed cuz they'll bite the magazine and not your hand 😹
These are some wise tips *notes*
Better to have 3 weapons. Primary, secondary and melee. Practice everytime you can and learn how to maintain them. For your primary prefer semiautomatic rifles. Perfect for hunting and self defense. As a secondary use shotguns and/or pistols. Remember to have a firearm fit for small spaces. As for melee, my best options are either a crowbar, preferebly in titanium, a one hand hatchet or a trench spike, designed specifically to punch through skulls.
i think some details matter too, i see too many people thinking about using spears or crossbows which i find to be a bad idea as they would not make enough demage to really stop something that does not exactly feel pain. Halberds, scythes, improvised long ranger slashing or hammer like weapons are all better. Machette and axes are probably of the best as they are also a tools. Hammers are often better than knifes.
While leather and wool clothes are important for protection mobility should be bigger priority so having this balanced out is also good to think about. Investing in some good helmet or hat, gloves and boots is one of the first things to do.
a car, bicycle, rollers... anything that can give you an advantage in moving is a must.
I would argue the people thing strongly depends on if you prefer the nomad style of always moving or are trying to settle down and form a base.
Do not constantly think of the zombies, do not take things too seriously and do not let the existentialism get to you.
Fix up your goals from the start. If you plan on settling somewhere you will prioritize gathering tools and suplies for growing food over weapons.

Here is some tips from me:
1.stay at your home for 2-5 days to let the spread Cool down a bit
2.learn the zombies's behavior
3.go out side with mele weapon and one gun(emergency only)
4.find/make stronger weapon
5.only group up with people with 2-4 people(5-10 if all of you have great Bond an each one of you have good ability)
6.dont stay at one place. Move every 1-5 days and if you run out of place go with a boat,map,and compas
7.reproduce(try to repopulate the humans)

-you may have to give out homework on time before leaving the school, just to minimize suspiciousness in your leaving.
-DO NOT TELL anyone about your escaping, even your best friend.
-make up an excuse beforehand (hospital appointment works best if you already known to have special medical cases), better to tell them few days before escaping (after Monday and before Friday).
-be confident. When facing the guard be calm.
-WALK UP to the guard.
-maintain eye contact.
-tell the guard what you want with politeness, then use 'BECAUSE' as much as possible to express your exact excuse you used on the teacher.
-STAY CALM AND CONFIDENT.
If success:
-after you exit school: DON'T RUN, just walk in the direction the guard (The guard maybe still watching you) expect you to go.
-lose the sight of the guard calmly and wait for him to go (if it is lunchtime for him, it would be the best time to move).
Congratulation, you just have escaped the school!!
If failure:
-DON'T lie, suggest expressing your excuse with reference to the time.
-use various social engineering tactics.

The logic for malls apply to stores like military surplus, hardware, groceries etc. Not only will you have to potentially fend off zombies but other people too, things can get violent because people will fight for resources in the panic

Everyone would be prepared? Not many prepare for Zombies (since it is fictional) or an apocalypse since there is such a low chance of them to happen. Also not many have the supplies for a long lasting apocalypse since they are quite pricey. Also if people believe the world is ending they will panic, riot, loot, and maybe kill. If people actually believe the end of the world rumors. If the people ever find out since the government always seem to cover things up to "keep us safe" or "prevent panic". This means the threat could grow until it is to overwhelming and that is the start of an apocalypse.

what I do is plant a column of winter melons with pumpkins on tile 3, then get cob cannons in the pool, and spam starfruits on the front, maybe a couple gloom shrooms on the second to zombies tile helps too.

a blunt weapon could get stuck and you don't have training to use it and it would take a lot to get it dull because zombies have easier to destroy skulls because they are just rotting corpses so sword in one of the best options and you can train your self

Another tip. MAKE SURE TO READ THE LABLES ON ANY CONTAINERS YOU FIND WHEN LOOKING FOR SUPPLIES.
For all you know something that look’s like a soup can could actually be full of some really strong cleaning chemicals.
If the label is missing or too damaged to read it’s probably a bad idea to eat it.
Still chemicals can be used for utility reasons later on so I still think holding onto it could prove useful.

All these "zombie apocalypse" tips and whatnot seem to assume you'd stay in a ground-level building.
Seriously? One of the biggest weaknesses of zombies is climbing. Another is taking cover from weapons. What you should do is find a high-rise building, establish your home several (or many, depending on the kind of view you like to have, and how many flights of stairs you're willing to climb...) stories up, knock out all of the stairs from a couple of floors below you, and install ladders. If the building has an elevator shaft, drop the elevator by severing the lines with industrial grade metal shears, and install a winch-powered rope lift to haul loads of supplies up and down many flights. Scavange solar panels from high-income buildings and install them over the roof of the building for power. If you don't have any problems with other humans around, you can install ziplines between other buildings both for quick escapes, or an alternate place to haul supplies from. If you begin a colony, expand upward through the floors; being a highrise, it would already be segmented and have plenty of space for families or groups of others to stay together.
Essentially, it would be a huge defensible space for a colony, with no way for Zombies to get up, plenty of ways out, easy transport of supplies, a great vantage point, a chokepoint for invading humans, and has all the space you miht ever need.
Also, if your colony ever DOES fill the building up, you can expand outward to neighboring highrises: I mean, it's likely not the only one surrounded by single-story businesses, right? You can also build bridges between multiple buildings, if need be, using steel beams ripped from other abandoned buildings.

+Jordi Santini It would be a decent short-term solution, but it has a bunch of problems.
First, you'd have to make absolutely certain there's not a single zombie anywhere in the entire building nor any way at all for the zombies to get up to the higher levels. After all, it just takes one mistake for your face to get chewed off in your sleep.
Second, it's really not easy to manipulate a building in the way you proposed. Modern stairs and especially elevators are built with many, many safety precautions in mind. For instance, elevators are made so they simply get stuck in place if the cable snaps (surprise: People really don't like the idea of freefalling an uncertain height in a tiny, inescapable room and made sure that doesn't happen).
Third, your solution requires at least basic expertise in engineering, which many people nowadays no longer have. Not many people know how to properly install solar panels or build a lift or zipline that doesn't get stuck or break under its own weight.
Fourth, your solution will attract other survivors and require high-level social management pretty much right away. You'd have to be prepared to deal with crises daily and establish a political hierarchy with proper laws and peace enforcement.
If, however, you find a solution for all these problems, you would indeed have a decent short- to mid-term base against the living dead.
+Beremor You have the point, but all of those could be overcome using time.
The rooms would be searched one by one, methodically, while we scavenge what valuables there are in each section, and take note of any larger resources we could use in the future. (I.E. Maintenance rooms/supply closets, etc.). We would work our way slowly up, floor by floor. When we aren't doing that, we'd tie something across the stairwell doors (like police tape, etc.) and if we find one of them broken, we know something has come through, and we'd search it out. As long as we keep all the doors closed behind us when we finish checking rooms, they shouldn't refill with any zeds, and we should find any new wanderers easy enough in the halls.
The elevators, I had thought of, but hadn't thought of mentioning in my original comment. It would simply require some more effort and tools,; We'd just need to remove the break pads and other safety features, which can be done with tools. Basically, if it was put up, it can be taken down. If it proves too difficult or dangerous, we just scrap that idea, and maybe make the lift hang out of a window with a boom.
As for engineering problems, most cities probably have a library, which would still work after an outbreak. Most even still have a backup paper catalog. Also, most buildings with solar panels or other similar fixtures probably have a manual lying around in their maintenance department, and if we're their to get solar panels, we can afford the time to search through some drawers for one...
Yes, one of the main points of settling in a large building would be to form a community quickly. because while yes, more people require more resources and management, it means there are more people to scavenge for, defend, and mange the place. We'd try to get as much of the supplies as we could from grocery stores, hardware stores, hunting stores, the rest of our/other's buildings, etc. before scavengers raid them all. We'd have to set up a rain collection system(s) on the roof, set up of a couple secure storage areas in our building, ziplines, housing, defense from both zeds and hostile scavengers, etc. etc. etc.
Also, depending on how quickly we get there, we might find some people boarded up in their apartments or an office, etc. who we can persuade to join our community.

+Alexander Salt Don't be pretentions, swinging a sword with a pretty good acuracy is easy. There is no secret trick, it is just like swinging a stick about, but you need to be aware of which side is sharp and what not.

other than edge alignment, against a mindless opponent not really. its not like fighting an intelligent being. but for the love of god do not use a katana. it will break before any western sword of the same quality
+locked797 Swinging a sword like a baseball bat is easy. Actually cutting with it requires good blade alignment, or else you're more likely to hit stuff with the flat. Swinging it quickly, repeatedly, and powerfully requires certain techniques in handling it and moving it. Etc. etc.
This is why people practice with them. It's not as simple as TV makes it look.

+alberach There will be superchargers scattered everywhere, and they are solar powered. Panels don't just "fail", and can often be repaired. Plus, any generator would work, solar panels are just the most convenient.
