I still do all of the animation in After Effects, but I incorporated Blender, Mixamo and Fuse. If you have the Adobe Creative Suite, FUSE is free and allows you to create 3D characters like this really easily, then you can upload it to Mixamo (which is also free) to animate it. Doing this allows me to spend less time animating the characters and focus more on the smaller details and make it look better.
