    My rule of thumb in the uk is ride until they start throwing salt on the roads, purely because of the corrosion damage it causes.

    • @ThrottleBackRubberDown
      @ThrottleBackRubberDown  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah...salt sucks. I rinse the bike down every time I get home when riding in the winter. I will have a vlog later this winter on that...I have a great tool to make that whole process a lot easier for sure.

    Some bikes I own spend winter inside.
    Only because winter's freezing in northern Michigan. They don't make snow tires for track bikes. But I got a knobby tire pit bike I run around my 2 acres with my puppies all year long. Excellent video bro!

    Yes proper gear for winter riding is a must. From a young age 16 I rode year round: Didn’t have a car. But did get a brand new 1984 XL185 enduro for Christmas!! Got my license for it. That’s when you could get your motorcycle license separately from the car license. Great video sweet ride you got !

    Very nice, practical and informative video buddy ! I am western Canada and also ride “year round” (except Dec, Jan and Feb due to the snow) but cold weather without snow or ice doesn’t scare me as I am also similarly prepared. As you properly described, following your tips, most people can extend their riding season anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Well done, keep up the great work. Eddie

      Definitely all in the preparation. I am hoping for another light winter here. The worst part of me is having to wash the bike each day or every other day when they start treating the roads if they think it will snow. I hate that whole process...that is when I am cold!

    Hey Josh. - great post - really informative. Have the same bike so am enjoying all your content. Live in Canberra Australia. Elevation is about 640 meters and although we don’t get regular snow the mornings are usually minus (C) something for most of winter. You eventually work out what is effective in dealing with the cold - head buff and layering - as you noted - are probably the most useful. This year I did buy new pants jacket and gloves - Rukka Exegal - expensive but brilliant. From a company in Finland so I imagine they have some expertise when it comes to riding in a cold climate.

    • @ThrottleBackRubberDown
      @ThrottleBackRubberDown  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greatly appreciate the feedback! I venture to say you are definitely correct about the gear from Finland. Am I totally irrational for having a fear of all the venomous spiders and snakes in Australia? Are they that common or not something you really ever come across? Strange question...but I have always been curious.

    • @craigwalker3063
      @craigwalker3063 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThrottleBackRubberDown Hey Josh. It is a question often asked by visitors to Aust. We do have quite a lot wildlife that is poisonous- snakes and spiders especially - and stuff that gets about in the water such as box jellyfish (mostly on northern aust), blue ringed octopus and crocs of course. It’s not something that you normally encounter in urban areas - more likely in rural environments or when bushwalking. Snakes usually stay out of your way - although I have seen brown snakes jump at moving vehicles - including motorbikes - when they have young. You just need to have a healthy respect for it all. I wouldn’t let it put you off from a visit 😄There are some great places to ride 👌

    I find no matter what I wear I am either cold in the morning or hot in the afternoon. I can't get the right combo to be comfortable all day. I know you're going to say when you get too warm take something off. What do I do with it when I take it off? It's not like when I'm in my truck and can toss it in the back seat. So I prefer to be cold in the morning so the ride becomes more enjoyable as the day goes on not less. I know you're also thinking, but ERG you live in Arizona, it doesn't really get cold there. 2/3 of Arizona is mountains. I live a around 56, 5700 feet. It gets well below zero over night several times in December, January and February.

  • @DeadNought

    Won't ride in the cold due to icy damp road conditions. It isn't about the weather, its about surprise ice patches.
    I have ridden snowmobiles in the Canadian Arctic in temps colder than -40 without heated gear (lots of layers) it does get bulky.

    • @ThrottleBackRubberDown
      @ThrottleBackRubberDown  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah...Ice is no fun but I have found on my commute it is relatively easy to identify the conditions that will lead to icing and also know my regular commute and where to watch for the wet road on "good" conditions day. I've had a slip or two in my life due to excessively cold roads and some slip tarmac for sure. Adds a little excitement ;)

    Hello again, I have a question about cold riding. I am a newer rider with only a year under my belt and not riding in the winter months. I want to expand my riding season a little and worried about how my tires will perform in the cold weather and streets. I hear all the time about warming up your tires before your spirited riding. Plus the fact about sand, salt, possible black ice or other winter specifics to riding.
    Thoughts? Maybe a video would be cool too.

    • @ThrottleBackRubberDown
      @ThrottleBackRubberDown  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah...As a general rule I ride 25 degrees F and above but you have to watch for if the roads were wet the night before. If they were I will generally skip that day due to black ice. I got caught in a really bad black ice day a week back, no fun! My mornings I take it easy for sure. Until the temp gets up above 37 or so I just take it a little bit easier. Salt is a pain in that I have to wash the bike a whole lot more but it is worth being able to ride for a few extra months in my mind. I will likely do another video on the topic in the future.

  • @RoadReality

    I have heated gloves, and a balaclava I'll throw on when it's 35F or less. I love to ride, so I bought gear to make it more comfortable. I won't risk: rain (if I can help it), snow, ice, salt on the roads. It isn't worth it to me. Otherwise, I'm riding. I want to add heated grips to my bike, but that's about it.
    Also, where in MD are you? I'm down near DC!

    • @ThrottleBackRubberDown
      @ThrottleBackRubberDown  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am up north of Baltimore in Havre de Grace. I don't let salt dictate my riding because I lose too many days because of how long it stays on the road. Having said that, I rinse the bike after each salty ride and thoroughly wash on the weekends during snow season...I hate that part the most. I have a cool gadget I am looking at to make the rinsing process easier and will be posting a video/review once I get it.
