Maintenance package is good and convinient to those that don't have time or skill to do it. I love to tinker with everything and I own and I am frugal at the same time. So doing the maintenance myself is a "win win" adventure! Thanks for sharing my friend. Safe riding🙏

Yes...having the time and know how are critical. Perhaps in another stage of life I will have more of time to develop more know how! haha. For now I stick to the basics and let the pros handle the rest. Cheers bud.

It might worth keeping in mind that you're going to need a diagnostic tool reset the service reminder notifications if you're doing your own services. The GS-911 is one of the more popular tools and there are probably plenty of cheaper options on eBay, etc. I'm not super mechanically inclined myself, and have a lot of respect for folks that service their own motorcycles.

Great point! Nobody wants the ole exclamation point up all the time.

I do all of my own maintenance, however if I were to purchase a new motorcycle I would get a plan that covered everything throughout the warranty period. Ride on my friend!!!

Time is a problem for me too and although I do prefer to do my own mechanical work unfortunately life just does not allow it anymore and with some things I agree and prefer to get dealership to do it, if they are deemed trustworthy and all depends how deep your pockets are of course.

Great blog, I wouldn’t do the mileage to justify the service plan, however have made the mistake of test riding the new R1250RT, now I’m in a real pickle !!!! Ride safe

Great video TBRD, I went for a service plan as it seemed to offer better value over the 3 years. time will tell though :)

Here you have to let BMW authorized workshop to the services and maintenance for the warranty of the bike. Of course you can change the oil by your self between the service intervals, but you have to go to the workshop once a year or 10000km during the warranty of the bike.

On my bicycles I do all the maintenance myself, even very tricky stuff.
But for my S1000XR I have the maintenance done by my dealer for personal safety concerns.
I adjust silly stuff like the mirrors and tightening the chain, or repairing a broken auxiliary light or replacing a blinker unit, but do nothing that could jeopardize safety.
I have no service and/or maintenance plan.

Im riding a 21' XR and I plan on doing my own oil/ filter changes, air filter changes, chain maintenance, brake pads. Fork oil, brake fluid and valve checks will be dealer done. I am just not quite confident enough to tackle those jobs. My wallet wishes I were...Are you still riding your XR? If so, how many miles have you racked up to date? I just subscribed.

Yeah, BMW has some detailed maintenance. I follow it pretty much to the letter and do it myself, except for the 600 mile. My 2009 RT is 6K and annual too. I have to do to valve check, oil and oil filter at that time for sure. I do the final drive fluid and I do plugs and air filter every 12k and transmission every 18k. I flush the brakes every 1-2 years. Alternator belt ever 40k. Tires I bring the wheels to a motorcycle tire place and brake pads I do myself. If I had a S or K bike I'd probably have the dealer do the valves, but I could do everything else if I wanted to, so I wouldn't prepay. I would tell you that Ducati's are worse. A friend of mine got a multistrada and he prepaid maintenance for 2 years and it was more than you paid for 3 and it was a discount. Pass in a big way. If I get another bike, I would like something that's easier to maintain. If HD can figure out a 9k rpm engine with no valve adjustments, BMW can as well or any other bike company. Just saying.

I bought a maint package for my car because at the time I wasn’t budgeting very well, so I just worked it into my car payment. For the bikes, they are all used and I try to do as much as the work as I can. Harley service intervals are a joke though.

Great vids! Would you be able to speak to the wind protection? Do you get much wind noise in your helmet? And/or helmet buffeting?
Looking at purchasing an S1000XR. I have some tinnitus, and would like to keep wind noise down to a minimum! Thanks! Keep up the great work!

That is the high screen he has. At 5'10'' I found it loud and wound up replacing it with a shorter one to quiet things down at the expense of wind protection.

i have bought my xr 2 weeks ago i have always done my own servicing on previous bikes however with my first new bike i wont do any servicing on this bike as i understand i need to have all servicing done proffessionally in order not to void my 3 year warranty

The motorcycle dealers learned from the auto dealers and on some of these new bikes I think it’s a good deal.
