Great video! Just a side note though, Kawasaki made a ninja 400r in 2011 exclusively for Canada and Australia, had it as my first bike and it was amazing, it more of a sport touring so super comfortable and a lot of "give" for new riders :)
In summary: The seat sucks. The acceleration sucks compared to my heavily modded R3 and old SV650. I prefer the feel of my R3's aftermarket slipper clutch and aftermarket throttle. The brakes suck. On the plus side, I can tuck without eating my knees, and I like the wide rear tire. Did I miss anything? 🤔 Glad I didn't watch this video before buying my Ninja 400. I think it is a great bike for the price. I've never had a Kawasaki nor a Yamaha, so I have no bias either way. The Ninja 400 and R3 are roughly the same price, so choosing the Ninja 400 was a no-brainer for me. The Ninja 400 has much more growing room, and will stay in my garage longer than the R3 would. Anyone can dump money into a entry-level bike to make it better than its primary competition. But if you're gonna do that, you might as well save a little more and get a 600.

In Germany you are allowed to ride motorcycles with a maximum power output of 48 hp. You have to be 18 to get this license and it's called A2. After two years of having this license you are allowed to step up the game by getting the A license. This allows you to ride all motorcycles regardless of their ccs or horsepower. If you are 24 and you want to get a motorcycle license you will directly start with the A license, so no restrictions. With the age of 16 you are allowed to ride motorcycles with a maximum 125 ccs and 15 hp. I hope I could help. If you have some questions I'm happy to answer them.
Marc Hard and what a drag it all is, I have a category A licence as I came late to biking. So many tests and so much money spent. CBT, then you have to go to a test centre and sit through 53 online questions and 14 videos of hazard awareness. Then it’s Mod1-I got to ride a MT07 at this point, then it’s Mod2 and then you have a full licence. People in the U.S don’t know how lucky they are to not have to go through all this.
In switzerland u can drive a 50cc with 16 yrs old and with 18yrs u can drive a bike restricted with 48 HP (but only if u had a 50cc before). So if you are 18 and wanna get started biking u can only drive a 125 cc. Them after 2 years without an accident u can drive a unrestricted motorcycle for both the 48 HP licence and the 125 cc✌🏼
The Ninja 400 2019 abs is the best bike I've owned in the last 3 months...hands down it will leave any mode R3 behind without any modes done to the Ninja 400...The Ninja 400 is a great ride and is plenty fast enough...A Ninja 650 can only go 154 miles per hour, which means the price for the Ninja 400 is a better bang for your buck...later
Gotta keep in mind things change on bikes that are completely new, to when they get a thousand miles on the clock. Transmission action improves, brakes get bedded and feel stronger/more sensitive. Most throttle cables are too sloppy from factory and a quick spin of a nut fixes that. Tires get more tack and feel different after a few heat cycles. Levers and shifter angles can be adjusted for more optimal contact with hands and feet.
I put a 13t front sprocket on mine now doing 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, engine also gains a few horses after break in hence why it feels kinda crappy before the 800 mile mark, all in all got mine 10kgs aka 22lbs lighter, doing 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and havent put any full exhaust on it or pcv :) its my new daily commuter
yep, its a type of bike that hates weight so if you weigh over 180lbs it wont be so fast but if you're a lighter rider its actually very impressive, other thoughts are its making 12hp more than the r3 to the rear stock but due to euro4 its actually limited so putting a full exhaust can get you to 54hp to the rear, so 54hp with some weight modifications = fast, to think a "beginner" bike can keep up with a older r6 upto around 70mph is impressive in my eyes, also that 13t sproket brings on power wheelies which is a good time especially when getting close to 70mpg

Nope its all about weight so far, to lazy to flash as its mostly a commute bike, but alloy sprockets, lithium battery, light bar ends, lithium batt, fender removal, pegs removal, tool kit, slip on, evap system = 10kgs lighter, plus my own diet = 40lbs lost so now weigh 69kgs is what gets the acceleration up, using the 13t also makes the bike top at exactly 62mph in 2nd which is perfect for 0-60 times, theres a guy on the forums who looking a drop of 11-12kgs and weighs less than myself, but he put a bigger sprocket so acceleration isn't his thing lol
Shit. If I lost most of my fat I'd go from 85kg to about 77kg. Even with all the reductions, a full system and exhaust w/ light gear I think I'd stretch too much to reach under 4 seconds too, but at least I'm not in the 90s lmaooo This thing basically starts making numbers like a fz6r/ninja 650 would, except without all that top-heaviness, which is what's so impressive about it. I’m an experienced rider in my late twenties and have just downsized from a 2009 CBR600RR to a brand new Ninja 400. For day to day riding the power differences are irrelevant, I could never (legally) use all the power the CBR packed on the road anyway, it almost felt wasted off the track and was so twitchy at low speeds in commuter traffic. The Ninja on the other hand is an absolute joy to ride in every sense, including the fat chunk of cash I’m now saving on insurance and fuel.
there's plenty of beginner bikes in the US, as long as you aren't picky! Sv650 is a great bike, plenty of dual sports (I love my KLR650) xr650, drz400, as long as you stay away from 450 street conversion dirt bikes you're gonna do fine as a beginner. Any cruiser under 1kcc is easy, even the mini 125 class like the grom. I love sport bikes and the r3 is a fantastic entry level track bike, but what's the point of a beginner getting a sport bike other than to look cool? Get on 2 wheels, but used, then you can decide what you're looking for and dump a lot of money into a bike you have enough experience to ride safely.
Motonosity I wanted a ninja for as long as I can remember (parents nixxed immediately). By the time I was 18 I knew a sport bike wasn't the best option for me $$$. More expensive, harder maintenance, higher insurance, more dangerous, and if you wreck it will cost more to fix! I crash my KLR, pick it up, and ride home. Maintenance is essentially hitting the bike with a hammer until it works. It's a slow pig, but it will get me up to 100 on the highway still faster than most cars.
We really don't care about your thoughts on the 400 market. Viewers are wanting to see the take off power, pulling power on the highway, etc.. was thinking about getting one for the wife as a 1st bike but all the commentary made it hard to watch.
They don't increase the power more because they sit right at the limit of the EU A2 license. Well that's 48, but there is a weight to hp ratio limit. You have to understand that what you get in the USA is based on EU laws for beginner.
Conclusion : the bike is awesome, nothing to hate on the bike actually. I started on a restricted Yamaha Tracer 700, as I have an A2 license, but now I want this 400 more and more. No restrictor required, cheap to maintain, will be cheaper to buy in the future, has looks borrowed from the H2R, good fuel economy, gives an A2 rider the option to have more power than the 250s-300s, but not dive into the 500+ classes if they don't want to, which for the streets let's face it, they have overkill power.
Hi Motonosity. Love your channel. And glad the ride impression changed your mind from your initial opinion. as a Ninja 400 owner and beginner rider, I rode and considered the rc390 and the r3. The 400 is nicer fit and finish than ktm. Better power and brakes than R3. And better all around on hwy and street than both. You can actually comfortably cruise 80mph where the r3 and ktm are screaming at higher rpms. The ninja 400 is 17 pounds lighter than the ninja 300 too. If you are a beginner or expert and want a lightweight bike for short commutes and track use, the ninja 400 is better all around than ninja 650. Sure for a sports touring the ninja 650 or z650 hands down. Sure i cant do 150 blasts on hwy like a 1000cc. But the gearing is such you can actually rip the gears without going to jail. You can do that with well the rc390 and r3. But the ninja is a better all around package for $5k out the door. I personally liked the Honda cb500f as a starter bike. It's a fun little bike that still has power it's a naked bike so no wind protection but it's a comfortable riding position.
I have a cb500x as my first bike. It's been fun so far and my dad who has been riding for over 40 years enjoys it and my bf who rides a 1900cc raider enjoys it too.

I have a 2017 cbr500r as my bike. With the license restrictions in Australia it's about the most power you can have without a full license. I love it though. The 500s just feel higher quality than the smaller ones and got bigger wheels. They feel more like a real bike and have the power to sit comfortably on the highway. I don't think honda will make the 300 any bigger because they have the 500 already so motonosiry shouldn't be worried about the small cc class disappearing .
One big factor in squeezing out the smaller-displacement bikes that doesn't get a lot of attention is financing. I walked into a dealer a few years ago with no experience, wanting a new CBR250 or perhaps 500, for highway commuting in the Los Angeles area. The dealer tried very hard to convince me to buy a used NC700 or SV650 in the same price range, specifically because (they claimed) that higher-displacement bikes have a lower rejection rate for financing. Let me emphasize that: *before learning anything about my financials* they attempted to steer me toward larger bikes, even though one of the options presented (the SV650) was *cheaper* than my initial target, on the basis of loan approval. After I encountered the same approach at several other dealers, I decided to sit on the decision for a while. Full disclosure: I still haven't bought a new bike because I stumbled onto a "barn find" 250 dual sport while I was debating. Now I'd *walk in* looking for a larger bike.
I was a brand spankin new rider a month ago and my first purchase was the ninja 650 and I couldn't be happier, I don't think you have to worry about new riders being scared away from a 400, in fact I think its perfect, because I think a lot of new riders become bored extremely quickly with so called "beginner bikes" and wish they stared with something more powerful to begin with

Don’t worry about bike makers leapfrogging each other. Every frog leaping ahead leaves an empty place behind to be filled in by another frog advancing in the line. It is called techological progress. Even with constant leapfrogging there will ever be 125, 250, 300, 400, 500 and higher cc bikes to chose from
I actually rode these during a demo day. And while they are nice on the streets, gorgeous and full featured they are pointless at the moment when you can buy an older 300 for cheaper or 650 for close in price.. they are new and i never recommend buying new for beginners. dont buy a 400 if you want a cheap, low power learner bike and plan to trade it in soon after you are more skilled. For now these are basically for those that want to add a small cc bike to their collection and bring out when they dont need one of their bigger bikes. If you want a little bike, buy a little 300, if you want a bigger bike just get a 650, you will still be fine to learn on that PLUS you wont be mad at yourself for buying it after like 5 months to a year when youre ready to upgrade it. this may be ok for the bigger/taller riders but im 6'3" / 190 pounds and my wifes 2017 ninja 300 is a great bike all around. It gets me like 65mpg when i use it to commute to work, and its got plenty of power for almost everything, the one drawback is passing power on the highway doing 75+ but i dont typically take it on there or need to pass anyone when i am. The 400 wont be any better. We also have a 2015 kawi vulcan 650S, and a 2014 honda interceptor 800 so i can legit say that i know what im talking about when i say its a waste of time and money.
I'm coming from the perspective of a first-time Rider and I personally feel that if you can justify getting a brand new bike that's a 250cc 400cc bike go for it, because you when it comes down to getting used bikes most of the time you got to settle for what you can find for the price you're looking for what is that be 500 or 3,000, and you also tend to get whatever problems the bike had if any, whereas a new bike it's off the assembly line the only problem it has is manufacturer related which is generally covered under the warranty, and typically if you're going to get a bike and your new you have a lot of disposable income you can pretty much pay that bike off pretty quick and if after you pay the bike off you don't like it anymore you can trade it in for a new one sell it or just get a new one cuz you've already paid it off and have it as a backup or a bike for a friend to learn on
Sometimes I think people are mistaken just thinking of these as beginners bikes ,they are also great alt transpiration for someone who dose not like scooters. they are less likely to be stolen , cheep to insure and keep running , and super dependable.

Imo, I always thought Kawasaki had it right for years with the old EX500/Ninja500r as a fun starter, or even more advanced rider bike. I always thought an updated look and FI and that bike would of lived for another 10yrs. at the dealership.

Kawasaki said they changed Ninja 650 and the Japan domestic only Ninja 400 from sport touring to Sport standard. The Ninja 300 new version is the 2018 Ninja 250 that is not sold in America. The Ninja 400 has been sold in Japan only since 2009.
Most popular bike in europe at the moment fot A2 (restricted license) are MT07, Z650, Z800, Er6N and all those big restricted bikes, not much market for 250/300 (mt03/r3 and duke 390 are the exceptions) and them you have your chinese 125 that are really popular for town, 2000€ brand new and insurance in europe os dirt cheap, under 300€ a year for a decent coverage
I think you are making the right point here. Beginner bikes aren't going to get much bigger because of A2 (as well as similar restrictions elsewhere) and world markets. Also the ninja 400 is close on the heels of the ninja 650 in term of performance as it is. Kawasaki isn't going to go any bigger on their littlest ninja I would guess. If anything, the could possibly re-introduce an ultra-budget 250 again somewhere down the road to run alongside the bigger 400.
I totally agree more ccs on a starter bike isn't better as long as you have enough. They've always made soft 650s, so I'm not sure this was a good thing as far as replacing a 300

The laws regarding motorcycles are a bit more strict in Denmark Here is a translated version of the law: 18 years old At age 18 you are allowed to take the drivers license for the A1 category. The A1 category grants you permission to drive a 125 cc motorcycle with an effect of 11 kW max or 14.9 hp or a three-wheeled motorcycle with an effect of 15 kW max or 20.3 hp. 20 years old At age 20 you are allowed to take the drivers license for the A2 category. The A2 category grants you permission to drive a motorcycle with an effect of 35 kW max or 47.5 hp. 24 År At age 24 you are allowed to take the drivers license for the A category. This allows you to drive all motorcycles.
I was intending on getting a ninja 300 over the 400 but I’m just now getting my license. At least I will get the 400 before Kawasaki starts raising its minimum cc bikes
Just bought a Ninja 400 May 5th. It's also my first bike ever. I wanted a sport type bike but not a SuperSport. So far it's been great. I'm a bigger guy being 5'11" 255/260. But so far it's been great tooling around town and the few times I've been on the highway I haven't had any issues keeping up or moving through traffic. The seat I agree with is pretty hard and I'm gonna look into getting some kind of cover/bad to hopefully make it better I spent about 2 hours riding around yesterday and after awhile my butt really started to feel it.

Good point in the uk if you have an a2 licence whatever bike you may have it cant have more than 48 hp engine capacity. If it does it nees to be restricted to that level. A2 is up to 21 years of age. A1 is from 17 years old that machine also need to be restricted to 38 hp. If you are older than 25 you can take a direct access licence where ther are no restrictions to the machine you may have. In all cases you still need to do cbt comulsory bike test an assesment of competance as a rider. Hope it helps
The Yamaha YZF R125 isnt made for the US market because it has not a lot of power 15HP / 125cc. I think that nobody would ride this if you can buy a 1000cc bike and have more fun. In europe you are allowed to ride these 125cc bikes with the age of 16 and the R125 is one of the most sold bikes here in Germany. Mostly you ride them 2 Years and then you can buy a Bike that has a maximum power of 96HP witch you have to restrict to 48HP for 2 years or you buy a Ninja 400 , R3 , KTM RC390 witch you dont have to restrict because they have a maximum power of 48HP. I think the lincens system in Europe (Germany) is better then in the US, i mean you can start riding with the age of 16 and get some expierience with less power so you dont make some mistakes with a bigger bike. And the Ninja 400 looks great :).
In our country you need 400 cc to get to the expressways, so these small bikes aren't aimed at the Muricans, they're for us SEA people who are looking to get into the expressways, cause 400 cc is considered big bikes here. (Philippines). Besides here, 100kph is fast enough cause roads are generally small.
Also in here, much like the Indian motorcycle scene, 100-200cc bikes rule the streets, small agile and easy to get around traffic, cause lanesplitting is allowed here and traffic is insane.
I love the idea of this bike, it is actually restricted at the top of the RPM range, if you look at the dyno chart you'd see it going flat at the top, unrestricted it should make 50bhp, with mods maybe 50whp, and I doubt it would happen as you said, because there are already 650's so they can't keep going up, I think this bike is the limit since they had to restrict it already. I also ride a 650 and I'd like to get this bike and see what it can do with all the mods, lighter weight would be great because 650's weakness is being heavy, though Kawasaki fixed that with the new Z650 and Ninja 650, which I'd also like to have (the Z), when the time comes, if they brought back the white on green frame Z I'll get that, otherwise it might be the 400, unless Honda or Yamaha make something better, we'll see!
im making 53hp and mine is 10kgs lighter than stock "about to be 12kgs lighter" and I dont even have a performance air filter :) lighter is always better
U.K. Bikes are restricted to 50cc from 16 to 17 ,at 17 -19 125 with 15 bph at 19 you can have any bike under 47 bph then when your 21 you can have anything and for each level you take a test
I love how you guys in America always stress what a totally brand new concept the Ninja 400 is. I mean it has been around for many years in Japan, although it's not considered a beginner bike here (we have 125s and 250s for that purpose). Btw 400cc are the biggest motorcycles we can ride with an ordinary mc license.
For anybody who wants to pass the bike license. Well you could be any age but for 2 years you will have to be on the A2 bike license. Restritect max to 47,5 hp our less. 35 kw. Then you have to pass another license which is the A. That allows you after the 2 A2 years to chose any bike you want.
It's ALMOST like they're trying to create a trend for just doing 2-cylinder engines to sway riders away from legitimately good inline-4 engines, into "well that one is 20cc less and also twin-cylinder, so it woks for this as well" type of thinking. Just make it easier for the consumer to accept subpar, and they won't ask for excellence, they'll just BUY
I'm not sure if it's because you guys don't get them in the US but in the UK we have loads of 400cc class bikes if you look into small displacement bikes from the 90's theres the zxr400, vfr/cbr400, gsxr400 to name a few. so just a little correction on the first 400 bit

In new Zealand we have learner approved bikes, they aren't based on power, the are based on power per tonne, and we can get upto a 660cc bike if it has a low enough horse power per tonne, so not an r6
I don’t think anyone should start on anything less than 600cc bike if you plan on riding a 600 or 1000. you will learn more in terms of controlling power and self control and avoiding abject or accidents by using the power rather than the brake. What I’m trying to say is the 300’s are too forgiving and allow bad habits and when people feel like they are “ready to move up” it bites them in the ass. Not trying to brag or say anyone has to start on a 1000cc but I did and 6 years later I’m still on a liter bike, new R1. My belief is that you should start on the same size bike you want, like your end goal bike. In the end this IS America you should be free to start on whatever cc bike you want. Idk if any of that made since.
theres a reason why all the world champions in motogp and world sbk all started on tiny bikes some even 150 cc...smaller bike = less assits and helps you learn how to properly utilise corner speed, ask rossi and marc what they think and they will all tell you starting low is the only way.
I think all these little bikes coming out now fit a really niche market, stunt riding is kind of faded away and people want to sport ride and have the actual track experience and to me a 250 Ninja or a 400 ninja or an r3 are beautiful track bikes I don't like the CBR because it's a single-cylinder but still on the track is fun they're like the 250 MotoGP bike except they're not that fast but they're light you can flick them around they dont wear you out too much so your time in the saddle can be even if you have ever thrown around a big bike on a track it's a daunting task after a while even if your smooth and have all the finesse in the world it's a lot of weight to throw around and you can build on these little engines so I think that's what's happening. Like I said niche market people don't want to buy a 600 or 1000 for a track bike you don't feel like you're going to get killed as much on a 300 or 400 or 250 I might be totally wrong but I think I'm right cuz the stunt riding scene is gone and now people are wearing leather jackets and gloves instead of mesh and hell boots also they're not smashing in their gas tanks and putting padding on them so I think the trend is for track riding and these are excellent little cheap track bikes. Yeah you can get a track bike pretty cheap that's bigger than this but what you're getting is somebody else's problem you can go to the dealership buy one of these brand new and start your weight reduction and your safety wire and know that it's not beat up buy two or three other riders thanks for listening
In the Netherlands/most of Europe you need to get 3 licences separately. At the age of 18 you can get A1(125cc 11Kw restriction) Then at 20 A2 (35Kw/48hp, you can have 70Kw but you need to restrict it to 35 again) After two years of experience with A2 or at the age of 24 you can finally have your A licence witch means you can drive everything Summary: its a big mess with toooooo much little rules and uncertainties. (Correct me if Im wrong with one of the rules/facts)

the thing about "starter bikes" is beginners in europe start out at 16 riding the 125's and at 18 can ride 48hp. that's probably not the case in the US, you don't have many naive little kids getting huge bikes to ride on the streets, well not that i've ever seen a 16year old american vlogger who rides a literbike..
My first motorcycle was a honda rebel 250 and I still have wish I would have gone with a 300+ anything under 300 you can't take onto freeways or anything when you get enough experience you also can't pass cars that easily doing anything 50+ because your already maxed out. Im hoping to upgrade soon looking at a middle bike like 400/600 range

The Ninja 400 and R3 are roughly the same price, so choosing the Ninja 400 was a no-brainer for me. The Ninja 400 has much more growing room, and will stay in my garage longer than the R3 would.
Anyone can dump money into a entry-level bike to make it better than its primary competition. But if you're gonna do that, you might as well save a little more and get a 600.

In Germany you are allowed to ride motorcycles with a maximum power output of 48 hp. You have to be 18 to get this license and it's called A2. After two years of having this license you are allowed to step up the game by getting the A license. This allows you to ride all motorcycles regardless of their ccs or horsepower.
If you are 24 and you want to get a motorcycle license you will directly start with the A license, so no restrictions.
With the age of 16 you are allowed to ride motorcycles with a maximum 125 ccs and 15 hp.

Marc Hard and what a drag it all is, I have a category A licence as I came late to biking. So many tests and so much money spent. CBT, then you have to go to a test centre and sit through 53 online questions and 14 videos of hazard awareness. Then it’s Mod1-I got to ride a MT07 at this point, then it’s Mod2 and then you have a full licence. People in the U.S don’t know how lucky they are to not have to go through all this.
In switzerland u can drive a 50cc with 16 yrs old and with 18yrs u can drive a bike restricted with 48 HP (but only if u had a 50cc before). So if you are 18 and wanna get started biking u can only drive a 125 cc. Them after 2 years without an accident u can drive a unrestricted motorcycle for both the 48 HP licence and the 125 cc✌🏼
The Ninja 400 2019 abs is the best bike I've owned in the last 3 months...hands down it will leave any mode R3 behind without any modes done to the Ninja 400...The Ninja 400 is a great ride and is plenty fast enough...A Ninja 650 can only go 154 miles per hour, which means the price for the Ninja 400 is a better bang for your buck...later
Gotta keep in mind things change on bikes that are completely new, to when they get a thousand miles on the clock. Transmission action improves, brakes get bedded and feel stronger/more sensitive. Most throttle cables are too sloppy from factory and a quick spin of a nut fixes that. Tires get more tack and feel different after a few heat cycles. Levers and shifter angles can be adjusted for more optimal contact with hands and feet.
I put a 13t front sprocket on mine now doing 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, engine also gains a few horses after break in hence why it feels kinda crappy before the 800 mile mark, all in all got mine 10kgs aka 22lbs lighter, doing 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and havent put any full exhaust on it or pcv :) its my new daily commuter

yep, its a type of bike that hates weight so if you weigh over 180lbs it wont be so fast but if you're a lighter rider its actually very impressive, other thoughts are its making 12hp more than the r3 to the rear stock but due to euro4 its actually limited so putting a full exhaust can get you to 54hp to the rear, so 54hp with some weight modifications = fast, to think a "beginner" bike can keep up with a older r6 upto around 70mph is impressive in my eyes, also that 13t sproket brings on power wheelies which is a good time especially when getting close to 70mpg

Nope its all about weight so far, to lazy to flash as its mostly a commute bike, but alloy sprockets, lithium battery, light bar ends, lithium batt, fender removal, pegs removal, tool kit, slip on, evap system = 10kgs lighter, plus my own diet = 40lbs lost so now weigh 69kgs is what gets the acceleration up, using the 13t also makes the bike top at exactly 62mph in 2nd which is perfect for 0-60 times, theres a guy on the forums who looking a drop of 11-12kgs and weighs less than myself, but he put a bigger sprocket so acceleration isn't his thing lol
Shit. If I lost most of my fat I'd go from 85kg to about 77kg. Even with all the reductions, a full system and exhaust w/ light gear I think I'd stretch too much to reach under 4 seconds too, but at least I'm not in the 90s lmaooo This thing basically starts making numbers like a fz6r/ninja 650 would, except without all that top-heaviness, which is what's so impressive about it. I’m an experienced rider in my late twenties and have just downsized from a 2009 CBR600RR to a brand new Ninja 400. For day to day riding the power differences are irrelevant, I could never (legally) use all the power the CBR packed on the road anyway, it almost felt wasted off the track and was so twitchy at low speeds in commuter traffic. The Ninja on the other hand is an absolute joy to ride in every sense, including the fat chunk of cash I’m now saving on insurance and fuel.

Sv650 is a great bike, plenty of dual sports (I love my KLR650) xr650, drz400, as long as you stay away from 450 street conversion dirt bikes you're gonna do fine as a beginner. Any cruiser under 1kcc is easy, even the mini 125 class like the grom. I love sport bikes and the r3 is a fantastic entry level track bike, but what's the point of a beginner getting a sport bike other than to look cool? Get on 2 wheels, but used, then you can decide what you're looking for and dump a lot of money into a bike you have enough experience to ride safely.
Oh for sure! There are tons, just not for this specific type. So yeah, if you're not picky lol. But there are certainly a ton of options :)
Motonosity I wanted a ninja for as long as I can remember (parents nixxed immediately). By the time I was 18 I knew a sport bike wasn't the best option for me $$$. More expensive, harder maintenance, higher insurance, more dangerous, and if you wreck it will cost more to fix!
I crash my KLR, pick it up, and ride home. Maintenance is essentially hitting the bike with a hammer until it works. It's a slow pig, but it will get me up to 100 on the highway still faster than most cars.

They don't increase the power more because they sit right at the limit of the EU A2 license. Well that's 48, but there is a weight to hp ratio limit. You have to understand that what you get in the USA is based on EU laws for beginner.
I'm assuming the 400 came restricted on all of the bikes? And there is a simple mod like taking off the block plate to unleash it's full potential?
Conclusion : the bike is awesome, nothing to hate on the bike actually.
I started on a restricted Yamaha Tracer 700, as I have an A2 license, but now I want this 400 more and more. No restrictor required, cheap to maintain, will be cheaper to buy in the future, has looks borrowed from the H2R, good fuel economy, gives an A2 rider the option to have more power than the 250s-300s, but not dive into the 500+ classes if they don't want to, which for the streets let's face it, they have overkill power.
Hi Motonosity. Love your channel. And glad the ride impression changed your mind from your initial opinion. as a Ninja 400 owner and beginner rider, I rode and considered the rc390 and the r3. The 400 is nicer fit and finish than ktm. Better power and brakes than R3. And better all around on hwy and street than both. You can actually comfortably cruise 80mph where the r3 and ktm are screaming at higher rpms. The ninja 400 is 17 pounds lighter than the ninja 300 too. If you are a beginner or expert and want a lightweight bike for short commutes and track use, the ninja 400 is better all around than ninja 650. Sure for a sports touring the ninja 650 or z650 hands down. Sure i cant do 150 blasts on hwy like a 1000cc. But the gearing is such you can actually rip the gears without going to jail. You can do that with well the rc390 and r3. But the ninja is a better all around package for $5k out the door. In Japan your first standard motorcycle license is limited to 400cc, prefect. So I bet ninja 400 will do prefect in Japan
I personally liked the Honda cb500f as a starter bike. It's a fun little bike that still has power it's a naked bike so no wind protection but it's a comfortable riding position.

I have a 2017 cbr500r as my bike. With the license restrictions in Australia it's about the most power you can have without a full license. I love it though. The 500s just feel higher quality than the smaller ones and got bigger wheels. They feel more like a real bike and have the power to sit comfortably on the highway. I don't think honda will make the 300 any bigger because they have the 500 already so motonosiry shouldn't be worried about the small cc class disappearing .
One big factor in squeezing out the smaller-displacement bikes that doesn't get a lot of attention is financing. I walked into a dealer a few years ago with no experience, wanting a new CBR250 or perhaps 500, for highway commuting in the Los Angeles area.
The dealer tried very hard to convince me to buy a used NC700 or SV650 in the same price range, specifically because (they claimed) that higher-displacement bikes have a lower rejection rate for financing.
Let me emphasize that: *before learning anything about my financials* they attempted to steer me toward larger bikes, even though one of the options presented (the SV650) was *cheaper* than my initial target, on the basis of loan approval.
After I encountered the same approach at several other dealers, I decided to sit on the decision for a while.
Full disclosure: I still haven't bought a new bike because I stumbled onto a "barn find" 250 dual sport while I was debating. Now I'd *walk in* looking for a larger bike.
I was a brand spankin new rider a month ago and my first purchase was the ninja 650 and I couldn't be happier, I don't think you have to worry about new riders being scared away from a 400, in fact I think its perfect, because I think a lot of new riders become bored extremely quickly with so called "beginner bikes" and wish they stared with something more powerful to begin with
300cc will always be around. The used market will always have a large surplus supply of bikes to go around.

Don’t worry about bike makers leapfrogging each other. Every frog leaping ahead leaves an empty place behind to be filled in by another frog advancing in the line. It is called techological progress. Even with constant leapfrogging there will ever be 125, 250, 300, 400, 500 and higher cc bikes to chose from
I actually rode these during a demo day. And while they are nice on the streets, gorgeous and full featured they are pointless at the moment when you can buy an older 300 for cheaper or 650 for close in price.. they are new and i never recommend buying new for beginners. dont buy a 400 if you want a cheap, low power learner bike and plan to trade it in soon after you are more skilled. For now these are basically for those that want to add a small cc bike to their collection and bring out when they dont need one of their bigger bikes. If you want a little bike, buy a little 300, if you want a bigger bike just get a 650, you will still be fine to learn on that PLUS you wont be mad at yourself for buying it after like 5 months to a year when youre ready to upgrade it. this may be ok for the bigger/taller riders but im 6'3" / 190 pounds and my wifes 2017 ninja 300 is a great bike all around. It gets me like 65mpg when i use it to commute to work, and its got plenty of power for almost everything, the one drawback is passing power on the highway doing 75+ but i dont typically take it on there or need to pass anyone when i am. The 400 wont be any better. We also have a 2015 kawi vulcan 650S, and a 2014 honda interceptor 800 so i can legit say that i know what im talking about when i say its a waste of time and money.
I'm coming from the perspective of a first-time Rider and I personally feel that if you can justify getting a brand new bike that's a 250cc 400cc bike go for it, because you when it comes down to getting used bikes most of the time you got to settle for what you can find for the price you're looking for what is that be 500 or 3,000, and you also tend to get whatever problems the bike had if any, whereas a new bike it's off the assembly line the only problem it has is manufacturer related which is generally covered under the warranty, and typically if you're going to get a bike and your new you have a lot of disposable income you can pretty much pay that bike off pretty quick and if after you pay the bike off you don't like it anymore you can trade it in for a new one sell it or just get a new one cuz you've already paid it off and have it as a backup or a bike for a friend to learn on
Don't worry, if people want a slow as shit beginner bike, they can always buy the Suzuki 250. -_-
Sometimes I think people are mistaken just thinking of these as beginners bikes ,they are also great alt transpiration for someone who dose not like scooters. they are less likely to be stolen , cheep to insure and keep running , and super dependable.

Imo, I always thought Kawasaki had it right for years with the old EX500/Ninja500r as a fun starter, or even more advanced rider bike. I always thought an updated look and FI and that bike would of lived for another 10yrs. at the dealership.

Kawasaki said they changed Ninja 650 and the Japan domestic only Ninja 400 from sport touring to Sport standard. The Ninja 300 new version is the 2018 Ninja 250 that is not sold in America. The Ninja 400 has been sold in Japan only since 2009.
They are doing it in the limit of the a1 licence category and the limits is about 45-47 bhp so dont worry

Most popular bike in europe at the moment fot A2 (restricted license) are MT07, Z650, Z800, Er6N and all those big restricted bikes, not much market for 250/300 (mt03/r3 and duke 390 are the exceptions) and them you have your chinese 125 that are really popular for town, 2000€ brand new and insurance in europe os dirt cheap, under 300€ a year for a decent coverage
They kept the horsepower limit under 47hp because of the A2 license in Europe. So it kinda is a starter bike.
I think you are making the right point here. Beginner bikes aren't going to get much bigger because of A2 (as well as similar restrictions elsewhere) and world markets. Also the ninja 400 is close on the heels of the ninja 650 in term of performance as it is. Kawasaki isn't going to go any bigger on their littlest ninja I would guess. If anything, the could possibly re-introduce an ultra-budget 250 again somewhere down the road to run alongside the bigger 400.
I totally agree more ccs on a starter bike isn't better as long as you have enough. They've always made soft 650s, so I'm not sure this was a good thing as far as replacing a 300

Honda has already leapfrogged Kawi. They have the CBR500R, but the Ninja has similar power in a lighter frame, which makes it the better option.

Here is a translated version of the law:
18 years old
At age 18 you are allowed to take the drivers license for the A1 category. The A1 category grants you permission to drive a 125 cc motorcycle with an effect of 11 kW max or 14.9 hp or a three-wheeled motorcycle with an effect of 15 kW max or 20.3 hp.
20 years old
At age 20 you are allowed to take the drivers license for the A2 category. The A2 category grants you permission to drive a motorcycle with an effect of 35 kW max or 47.5 hp.
24 År
At age 24 you are allowed to take the drivers license for the A category. This allows you to drive all motorcycles.
I was intending on getting a ninja 300 over the 400 but I’m just now getting my license. At least I will get the 400 before Kawasaki starts raising its minimum cc bikes

Just bought a Ninja 400 May 5th. It's also my first bike ever. I wanted a sport type bike but not a SuperSport. So far it's been great. I'm a bigger guy being 5'11" 255/260. But so far it's been great tooling around town and the few times I've been on the highway I haven't had any issues keeping up or moving through traffic. The seat I agree with is pretty hard and I'm gonna look into getting some kind of cover/bad to hopefully make it better I spent about 2 hours riding around yesterday and after awhile my butt really started to feel it.

The Kawasaki is the perfect bike for people who ride dirtbikes or four wheelers and want a road bike!
Good point in the uk if you have an a2 licence whatever bike you may have it cant have more than 48 hp engine capacity. If it does it nees to be restricted to that level. A2 is up to 21 years of age.
A1 is from 17 years old that machine also need to be restricted to 38 hp.
If you are older than 25 you can take a direct access licence where ther are no restrictions to the machine you may have.
In all cases you still need to do cbt comulsory bike test an assesment of competance as a rider.

The Yamaha YZF R125 isnt made for the US market because it has not a lot of power 15HP / 125cc. I think that nobody would ride this if you can buy a 1000cc bike and have more fun. In europe
you are allowed to ride these 125cc bikes with the age of 16 and the R125 is one of the most sold bikes here in Germany. Mostly you ride them 2 Years and then you can buy a Bike that has a maximum power of 96HP witch you have to restrict to 48HP for 2 years or you buy a Ninja 400 , R3 , KTM RC390 witch you dont have to restrict because they have a maximum power of 48HP. I think the lincens system in Europe (Germany) is better then in the US, i mean you can start riding with the age of 16 and get some expierience with less power so you dont make some mistakes with a bigger bike. And the Ninja 400 looks great :).

In our country you need 400 cc to get to the expressways, so these small bikes aren't aimed at the Muricans, they're for us SEA people who are looking to get into the expressways, cause 400 cc is considered big bikes here. (Philippines). Besides here, 100kph is fast enough cause roads are generally small.
Also in here, much like the Indian motorcycle scene, 100-200cc bikes rule the streets, small agile and easy to get around traffic, cause lanesplitting is allowed here and traffic is insane.
I love the idea of this bike, it is actually restricted at the top of the RPM range, if you look at the dyno chart you'd see it going flat at the top, unrestricted it should make 50bhp, with mods maybe 50whp, and I doubt it would happen as you said, because there are already 650's so they can't keep going up, I think this bike is the limit since they had to restrict it already. I also ride a 650 and I'd like to get this bike and see what it can do with all the mods, lighter weight would be great because 650's weakness is being heavy, though Kawasaki fixed that with the new Z650 and Ninja 650, which I'd also like to have (the Z), when the time comes, if they brought back the white on green frame Z I'll get that, otherwise it might be the 400, unless Honda or Yamaha make something better, we'll see!
im making 53hp and mine is 10kgs lighter than stock "about to be 12kgs lighter" and I dont even have a performance air filter :) lighter is always better
U.K. Bikes are restricted to 50cc from 16 to 17 ,at 17 -19 125 with 15 bph at 19 you can have any bike under 47 bph then when your 21 you can have anything and for each level you take a test
The problem with the small bikes is the braking systems. It is safer to look into 650 and up class.

I love how you guys in America always stress what a totally brand new concept the Ninja 400 is. I mean it has been around for many years in Japan, although it's not considered a beginner bike here (we have 125s and 250s for that purpose). Btw 400cc are the biggest motorcycles we can ride with an ordinary mc license.

For anybody who wants to pass the bike license. Well you could be any age but for 2 years you will have to be on the A2 bike license. Restritect max to 47,5 hp our less. 35 kw. Then you have to pass another license which is the A. That allows you after the 2 A2 years to chose any bike you want.

I'm not sure if it's because you guys don't get them in the US but in the UK we have loads of 400cc class bikes if you look into small displacement bikes from the 90's theres the zxr400, vfr/cbr400, gsxr400 to name a few. so just a little correction on the first 400 bit

In new Zealand we have learner approved bikes, they aren't based on power, the are based on power per tonne, and we can get upto a 660cc bike if it has a low enough horse power per tonne, so not an r6
I don’t think anyone should start on anything less than 600cc bike if you plan on riding a 600 or 1000. you will learn more in terms of controlling power and self control and avoiding abject or accidents by using the power rather than the brake. What I’m trying to say is the 300’s are too forgiving and allow bad habits and when people feel like they are “ready to move up” it bites them in the ass. Not trying to brag or say anyone has to start on a 1000cc but I did and 6 years later I’m still on a liter bike, new R1. My belief is that you should start on the same size bike you want, like your end goal bike. In the end this IS America you should be free to start on whatever cc bike you want. Idk if any of that made since.
theres a reason why all the world champions in motogp and world sbk all started on tiny bikes some even 150 cc...smaller bike = less assits and helps you learn how to properly utilise corner speed, ask rossi and marc what they think and they will all tell you starting low is the only way.
The CBR500r, by far the most overlooked light weight sport bike.

I think all these little bikes coming out now fit a really niche market, stunt riding is kind of faded away and people want to sport ride and have the actual track experience and to me a 250 Ninja or a 400 ninja or an r3 are beautiful track bikes I don't like the CBR because it's a single-cylinder but still on the track is fun they're like the 250 MotoGP bike except they're not that fast but they're light you can flick them around they dont wear you out too much so your time in the saddle can be even if you have ever thrown around a big bike on a track it's a daunting task after a while even if your smooth and have all the finesse in the world it's a lot of weight to throw around and you can build on these little engines so I think that's what's happening. Like I said niche market people don't want to buy a 600 or 1000 for a track bike you don't feel like you're going to get killed as much on a 300 or 400 or 250 I might be totally wrong but I think I'm right cuz the stunt riding scene is gone and now people are wearing leather jackets and gloves instead of mesh and hell boots also they're not smashing in their gas tanks and putting padding on them so I think the trend is for track riding and these are excellent little cheap track bikes. Yeah you can get a track bike pretty cheap that's bigger than this but what you're getting is somebody else's problem you can go to the dealership buy one of these brand new and start your weight reduction and your safety wire and know that it's not beat up buy two or three other riders thanks for listening
In the Netherlands/most of Europe you need to get 3 licences separately.
At the age of 18 you can get A1(125cc 11Kw restriction)
Then at 20 A2 (35Kw/48hp, you can have 70Kw but you need to restrict it to 35 again)
After two years of experience with A2 or at the age of 24 you can finally have your A licence witch means you can drive everything
Summary: its a big mess with toooooo much little rules and uncertainties.

I think the CBR500R was bigger first, but its not quite as fast as this bike I am fairly sure...
the thing about "starter bikes" is beginners in europe start out at 16 riding the 125's and at 18 can ride 48hp.
that's probably not the case in the US, you don't have many naive little kids getting huge bikes to ride on the streets, well not that i've ever seen a 16year old american vlogger who rides a literbike..
It's a small capacity bike, not a beginner bike. You can begin on whatever bike suits you

My first motorcycle was a honda rebel 250 and I still have wish I would have gone with a 300+ anything under 300 you can't take onto freeways or anything when you get enough experience you also can't pass cars that easily doing anything 50+ because your already maxed out. Im hoping to upgrade soon looking at a middle bike like 400/600 range
God, I miss riding.... This made me miss my Ninja 300 like crazy. Haven't had a bike in months in 5 months. Feels like a year. v_v
