I think Nev and Max's initial intention for the show was to help people. But because wholesome doesn't sell, it pushed Max to eventually quit because you just see how 'done' he is in every episode. I remember reading an instance of someone going on the show and spoke out on social media afterwards saying how he appeared on the show wasn't really him. That he got a lot of pressure from producers to create more drama and be more dramatic.That it caused a lot of problems in his life as he started getting hate mail and threats despite him being the victim on the show. After that, I stopped watching the show. Just like all reality TV, it's scripted to some degree.

I used to binge catfish back in the day. I stopped watching it because max left, without him the show didn't have the same energy. Nev can be pretty annoying at times and I didn't notice till max left.
i think it's good advice to be wary of secretive people in 2022 but this is very funny and a bit surreal to hear for me, someone who has been online since 1998, (i was online pretty young tbh) so i am incredibly secretive out of habit. no sharing photos, name, location, etc because it was so ingrained into me not to lol don't get me wrong i think you're right since the culture of the internet has changed so much over the decades. it was just a moment for me.

A lot of the newer episodes with the new host Kamie during COVID are great. Honestly prefer the over zoom format of the show because there’s less filler of them waiting in a park for someone. Just feels like there’s more drama overall.

I was catfished by an ex. It was the 2nd most terrifying time in my life. He used his friends pictures and when I went to meet up with him I saw my ex waiting for me and he proceeded to try to get me to take him back with his "i hate myself / I NEED you speech) and kept mildly threatening me that he'd hurt himself if I didn't get back with him. I told him I couldn't and he needed help and left. And he proceeded to text me as I'm driving calling me names and that no body will love me like he did and sent a picture of a knife and saying if I didn't come back he'd do it. And I'm in my car having a panic attack and my friend ( thank gods for her) I called her and explained and she told me to come to her house asap. He kept texting me threatening me and she took my phone and blocked him.

And he didn't care. I thiiiink they hugged by the end. I liked seeing a happy ending for at least one episode. She was SO nervous. The moment MGK mentioned he's missing Fathers Day I remembered that I HAVE seen this episode. It was the first thing I'd even seen him in and I remember thinking how he was a good guy by the end of the episode (despite the dumb decision to NOT stay at home on Fathers Day). I remember the one episode with the guy who was allegedly harassed by this girl who pretended to have had cancer. The guy was in a relationship and his girlfriend couldn't stand the situation anymore. They broke up. When Nev and Max confronted the guy and Alyssa, she reveals that the guy has been sending her dick pics and texting all sorts of dirty stuff. The guy was like "whatever" and it triggered the hell out of Max.
'You're a shameful citizen!' has become a daily staple insult inside my friend group since we first watched this ep years ago. I was so happy when I saw this video's title XD

It's not concerning to not be attracted to masculine women when you thought you were talking to a feminine woman. That's like being disappointed that the person you were talking to is old when you thought they'd be young. The fact that it was scripted and she wanted to come off that way is the concerning part.
I love catfish, legit my guilty pleasure show. Max was my favorite co-host, Kamie has been great too. This episode was insane!!

OMG you have to cover the episode where the guy actually believes he is dating Katy Perry, even after he meets his catfish. Or the episode where the wife is cheating on her husband... with her husband. Or Dylan and Savenia, which is really sweet. Or the one with Justin, the guy posing as a girl to chat up other guys, even though he stresses he is definitely not gay. Or the one where it's an entire group doing the catfishing. Also: Antwone and Tony, 'you should never have called me fat!' So many good episodes to choose from.

I used to binge catfish back in the day. I stopped watching it because max left, without him the show didn't have the same energy. Nev can be pretty annoying at times and I didn't notice till max left.

i think it's good advice to be wary of secretive people in 2022 but this is very funny and a bit surreal to hear for me, someone who has been online since 1998, (i was online pretty young tbh) so i am incredibly secretive out of habit. no sharing photos, name, location, etc because it was so ingrained into me not to lol don't get me wrong i think you're right since the culture of the internet has changed so much over the decades. it was just a moment for me.
Yeah fr! I'm a more recent person, but my dad works in tech and I was raised on "fake name, fake age, fake pictures". Although I have been using my real face online, I mostly post it to people who I already know are real ajdjdks
I don't use any social media apart from tumblr (and TH-cam obviously lol if that counts) and have always wanted them to do a Tumblr episode of this show since it works so differently both in its interface and culture to other social media; hardly anyone uses their real picture or name and you have to really work to find any real information about someone if they haven't put it in their bio or a pinned post, that's if they've posted it at all. It'd be wild lol it's better for my mental health than any other social media though, I don't get why you'd want to use your real name and picture and have your real friends/family/coworkers online when you could literally just go outside and do that in real life. Going online should be a break from real life
I was born in 2001 and started being online very young and so same as you it was ingrained in me by my parents to not share any personal information to people online. Like I'm an adult now but I'm still quite wary and nervous when people I talk to online want to know my name or want to know what I look like. I didn't even realize until this video that not sharing personal information about yourself online is considered sketchy behavior because growing up that was just taught to me as the #1 internet safety rule lmao.

A lot of the newer episodes with the new host Kamie during COVID are great. Honestly prefer the over zoom format of the show because there’s less filler of them waiting in a park for someone. Just feels like there’s more drama overall.
I still feel so sad for Geralyn, they really went full 'lets demonize the masc presenting girl who likes girls'. Like yeah they pulled the gay predator trope as if that shit wasn't bad enough but they went double whammy on a GNC babe BECAUSE she was GNC. Girl straight says it, 'She a stud, so.' It's like going down the phobic checklist and just stacking. And poor Geralyn was so ride or die for her ex that she was ready to lie on TV and look bad as it was...then all this on top? Uhg. I hope she's doing good now and is surrounded by people who love her and won't smear her for clout. It's one of the things you watch going "I hope this is fake".
I think one of my other fave Catfish episodes was Hayley and Britani, e58s8. That one is weird AF and unlike this one we don't even get a resolution, which actually leads me to think it might be one of the more legit ones? Cus of how heavily it's produced you'd think they'd want to tie up the plot threads but they don't. We just never get a follow up with her about why she did that. Plus we actually get a lovematch and they're so cute so. I hope they figured it out for their relationship.

I was catfished by an ex. It was the 2nd most terrifying time in my life. He used his friends pictures and when I went to meet up with him I saw my ex waiting for me and he proceeded to try to get me to take him back with his "i hate myself / I NEED you speech) and kept mildly threatening me that he'd hurt himself if I didn't get back with him. I told him I couldn't and he needed help and left. And he proceeded to text me as I'm driving calling me names and that no body will love me like he did and sent a picture of a knife and saying if I didn't come back he'd do it. And I'm in my car having a panic attack and my friend ( thank gods for her) I called her and explained and she told me to come to her house asap. He kept texting me threatening me and she took my phone and blocked him.

And he didn't care. I thiiiink they hugged by the end. I liked seeing a happy ending for at least one episode. She was SO nervous.
The moment MGK mentioned he's missing Fathers Day I remembered that I HAVE seen this episode. It was the first thing I'd even seen him in and I remember thinking how he was a good guy by the end of the episode (despite the dumb decision to NOT stay at home on Fathers Day). My favourite (cringiest) moment of this show was when the guy who reached out to them thought he was being catfished by this other guy. They ended up doing a reverse catfish to set up the reveal but it turned out the other guy just wasn't interested and it made the one who reached out look even more sad and desperate than if he was being catfished.
