Honestly in terms of satirical flicks that poke fun at overplayed genre tropes this is one of the funnier ones I've seen, but probably only because a lot of the ones associated with similar YA novels like Vampires Suck are so bad. I do genuinely like the idea behind the dude being a dual underground boxer and college student because its such an obvious attempt at mocking how absurd a lot of modern teen love interests in similar films and shows are in terms of the hobbies thry have, especially characters like Archie on Riverdale or not Harry Styles in After

50 Shades is five million times worse than Twilight and imo is the reason why the After series exists in the first place and kickstarted the whole fanfic-to-published-novel pipeline. Pretty sure Anna Todd even said in an interview that she was inspired by 50 Shades. Twilight is bad and maybe for the time period, it was the worst. But in the years since we got 50 Shades and After which is five million times worse. At least you can partly explain Edward's behaviour because he's a 100 year old vampire. @Nicamon ปีที่แล้ว +41

@@msjkramey OK,I wasn't sure that was the question, thank you for clarifying.
Well...let's see...let's first make a premise...Travis does nothing toxic for 27 minutes of film and Abby *constantly* treats him like shit only because she knows he has sex with several girls... basically she's constantly slut-shaming him, whether she says it out loud or not.Other than that...
01)She discovers he wants to make sure to have _consensual_ sex with all her partners and she's like:"UGH.🤮"I'm like...what?🤨(I mean, yeah,of course, you can sign a contract, then starting to do non-consensual stuff and shielding yourself behind the contract, but that's not what he's doing,as far as we and Abby know, and she's disgusted anyway simply because he has a lot of partners. As I said...slut-shaming.).
02)She sees a lot of condoms and, once again,slut-shames Travis for it.
03)She stares at him while he's getting undressed.
04)She literally SEXUALLY ASSAULTS HIM while he's sleeping and when she realizes instead of apologizing she yells at HIM...for what exactly? For having a natural biological response that he didn't ask for?!?
05)Travis apologizes for the _involuntary_ erection(HE's the victim and he's apologizing to HER)and she laughs, says:"Forget it!"and ignores him.
06)She slut-shames him again while they're having the bet.
07)The 1st time they sleep together she keeps yelling at him when he's being perfectly calm and peaceful and doing nothing wrong.
08)She slaps Travis violently multiple times because he platonically slapped her on her butt once to make her move from the TV screen.
Bonus)This is not actually _toxic_ per sé but she tells America that Travis seems completely mad(not sure what she says in English,I'm watching the film in Italian)and I don't understand what she's basing this judgement on...he's a totally normal boy who simply enjoys boxing and having sex.Nothing of this screams"mad person"to me.SHE has been far more"mad"than him so far(8 toxic behaviours VS 3,2 of which could have totally be just him joking).
09)She slaps him for having heared a conversation between her and someone else(nothing clues that he has done that on purpose),he's like:"You hurt me!"and she's like:"Well, that's on you for eavesdropping."
10)While they're jokingly fighting, she bites his nipples, when he complains she replies:"You liked it."he admits he did, they start to make out and suddenly she freaks out, knocks him out of the bed, when he's rightly confused she keeps saying she doesn't have feelings for him and hits him, then she makes out with him again, then she runs away, talks to America,in the meantime Travis goes away and she texts him:"Where did you go?WTF?".This whole exchange is not exactly _toxic_ but for sure Abby is sending *tons* of mixed signals to Travis...what is the poor bastard supposed to do?!?@.@
11)He IMMEDIATELY apologizes for being jealous and reading Abby's messages and she replies:"No,you didn't mess up,what you did was simply revealing who you are."Again...she says this BASED ON WHAT???He has done *nothing* so far to prove he's a pathologically jealous psycopath apart from that *1* intimidating behaviour towards Parker that I'm not even sure was meant to be taken seriously.
12)She keeps fantasizing about Travis, she almost has sex with him,all while dating Parker and telling him nothing about it.And she dares to slut-shame TRAVIS.🤦‍♂(At the party she tells Travis, talking about Parker:"I can trust HIM."and I'm like:"Yeah...HE's the one who shouldn't trust YOU!X-P")
Lucky 13)Travis worries for how much she's been drinking and she ONCE AGAIN yells at him and keeps insulting him and beating him.
14)Travis goes to save her and ONCE AGAIN she 1st yells at him and then she slams him against the wall and makes out with him.Jesus, woman, make up your goddamn mind!!😵
15)She uses a TASER on 2 persons that were not currently harming her(that's assault, from what I know)and 1 of those persons is her father!
16)She slams a stool on a guy during a fight she was not involved in. Yeah, she does it to defend Travis and the guy is not even bothered by it,but still...it wasn't a fair move!
      On the other hand Travis...
1-2)Slut-shames Abby a couple of times telling her to cover herself because she's distracting him.
3)Gets creepy and scary after the match of the bet.
4)Gets creepy and scary around Abby's boyfriend to scare him away.
5)While jokingly fighting he gets on top of her(while only wearing a towl)and when she tells him to move he doesn't and he blocks her arms.
6)After reading the messages between Abby&Mick he gets drunk and kidnaps a cat.
7)He throws a drink in a guy's face for no reason whatsoever.
8)She"steals"America's phone(not sure if this counts).
Abby is literally twice as abusive as Travis is...and I've been counting several things for Travis that I'm not even sure it should have been counted.

So I've seen a movie adaptation just like that a few weeks ago. Same except the message is the opposite of toxic. It's called Perfect Addiction. It's about a girl who boxes and she's trying to get revenge on her ex-bf by training his opponent in an underground fighting competition. She slowly realizes how she dissappeared in that relationship and is carrying the trauma over to her new relationships. It's still cringy af, but the message was great and I don't think this type of genre has enough movies with an actually good message at the end so I am on a quest to promoting it to whoever I think might enjoy it :)

I like how the bad boy trope in these stories always paints them as being a violent sociopath but they really have a wonderful person just beneath the surface which you can find if you try hard enough. Every time I have dated a woman that was a violent sociopath in the past, below the surface was more violent sociopath. Why can't these stories ever involve a nice girl, maybe a little shy or sheltered meeting a nice guy, maybe also a little shy or sheltered as well and they deal with real relationship issues they need to overcome.

    • @gabby3036
      @gabby3036 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Because of Beauty and the Beast. Lawl, (partially) kidding. But really, I think it's because toxic relationships are inherently interesting. Healthy relationships where the couple communicates and is just doing okay on a day-to-day basis is boring. It's fucking great to actually *live* that way, but it's boring to watch. As someone who's been in a toxic relationship - and you probably know what I'm talking about - it's hell. But it's not boring. It's the same reason sitcoms always have wacky situations that could be resolved so easily with, like, one conversation but if they had that conversation there would be no show.

I think it's brilliant. Especially coming from the director of one of the "After" movies. It sorts of tries to do what Scream did for teen slasher movies. It never fails to be subversive to it's genre in all the right moments. At the "sexy" moments where the movies it's parodying goes dramatic (producing unintentional laughs), this swerves to comedy. Sometimes it's subtle and other times it's like "Scary Movie", it's so broad.

Oh my gosh, I didn't know they made this a movie. I read this book when I was like 18? My friend recommended it and said it was amazing. It was GARBAGE! There was a scene where the guy threw out all his condoms to prove he only wanted the main girl, then later they go to have sex and remember he tossed his condoms. So she did some menstrual math and decided it's fine because she wasn't ovulating?? I was like, ma'am, you could still get pregnant. I felt like it would eventually come back and maybe she'd get pregnant, but it never came up again. WHAT WAS THE FUCKING POINT?? I hated this terrible book. The guy was shit, she was dumb and nuts. Just the worst.
Edit: I just got to the part where you mention the sex without a condom thing. I feel vindicated. It's the main thing I remember from that horrible book.

I credit this book with having taken me out of favours with the "bad boy" trope causing me to go from a steady reader of books with bAd BoYs to an avid hater of the trope cause THAT'S how much Travis' character traumatized me. Gonna have to say kudos to the author for helping save me from shit tropes like these.

I read part of Beautiful Disaster back in it's heyday (it was VERY popular at the time) and stopped less than halfway thru because it was awful and Travis was mostly awful. So I'm all for basically retconning the character, although it basically kept the few likable parts about him. I like that instead of absolutely tearing the apartment apart because Abby left with Parker, he trashes the apartment after she disappears and is looking for a clue. That is decidedly much less toxic. Like, I don't understand how these (usually female!) authors write these extremely toxic, abusive love interests acting psychotic towards the main character, and then put on the shocked pikachu face when people call it out for what it is. Sure, maybe in 2011 you can get away with it but in 2023 ain't no way you're getting away with that unscathed, especially when it's aimed towards college students who are usually smarter than that. I am all for adapting shitty romance books and actually making them a little better. God knows they couldn't do it with the After series lol. This movie was stupid and silly but I laughed a couple times and I actually enjoyed the two leads most of the time. I do think Dylan Sprouse deserves better roles but he's actually very good at playing the lead in these types of movies. He's certainly a better actor than Mr. Hero. (No disrespect, he seems like a nice guy, homeboy just cannot act.) Would I see the sequel in theaters if it comes out? Hell no, but I'll willingly watch it when it's on streaming services.
