Gynoug is shoot' em up game with VERY CREEPY and gruesome design of the bosses: the giant man in the train, torso spitting blood, the embryo thing and others... Back in the 90s Japan has an obsession with Giger-esque designs which was popularized by Contra.
Nemesis T-Type of which I miss the most. I miss the Hr giger-esque designs of 80s and 90s anime and certain video games
interesting then that they'd make a 'Giger train' even before the man himself did.

@1:16 How could anything so relatively simple in design and execution look so disturbing? Like, that's impressive!
I think it's because it's so simple yet clearly vulgar. When there's a monster like 17:15 - a Resident Evil-style mass of meat and suffering, sure, I get that. It's instantly recognizable as a scary monster. But 1:17? It kinda looks like an actual Cambrian era sea animal, or something incredibly obscene that you can't quite explain. It makes you wonder why anyone would come up with it or who approved it.
It's the pink, right? it's that that one part is pink that makes it so grotesque.
I must say, gruesome as they are, the boss designs are very creative.
But not theire attacks! Allways bombs, thats booooooring...😑😑😑

Love this kind of bosses. There was a time on SNES and Genesis where many environments, enemies and bosses were inspired by Giger.
can't believe I never visited the Giger museum, it's only a few hours by car
Cho Aniki has bosses like this I think the same team made it
Ecco the Dolphin had a Gigeresque alien race whom you had to fight. I liked how much of a stylistic change they were from the coral reefs and dark undersea caverns the game normally had you exploring.
That said, their levels were damn hard to beat.

Really creepy from the Orrpus on. Mechanical bosses are creepy if you are not a winged "birdman". What a wicked imagination and conceptual art have the artists who designed this creatures, i'll always admire this kind of games. Being a child playing this kind of games will leave marks, thats for sure :)

Agreed I remember beating this game when I was eleven years old, now i can't even pass the second boss
I remember renting Wings of Wor because of it's awesome cover art but only making it to stage 2 before the bosses got REALLY weird.
I gotta say those are pretty damn advanced graphics for a 1991 game!

Wow, I have NO IDEA where they dredged up these weird bosses from, but the devs had a vision. Graphics were spectacular too, for '91. Almost good enough to compete with Symphony of the Night.
I love that final boss theme, and the backgrounds, and all the creepy designs really.

In International version it called Gynoug and in America it was called Wings of Wor for Sega Genesis. Awesome game👍👍👍

There's definitely something that these old games had which modern games do not have (regarding boss design). I've never understood why. It's possible to create bosses as messed up in a modern game, I'm sure, but it never happens, really, it seems.

This game's atmosphere is so unique and cool for a shmup. Slog and Destroyer are especially ethereal.

Unsurprisingly, the artist behind many of these gruesome bosses went to work on the early Resident Evil titles.
That Final Boss looks like the Alien Cell Final Boss from ending 3 of Contra Hard Corps. Specifically the creature that bursts out of the top of the Missile. They both recall John Carpenter's The Thing in hideousness.
This game may have inspired the monster designs for Resident Evil along with many other games.

The last two boss do have slightly geiger-esque feel to them (the man train too) but, for some reason i have a hard time taking some of those design seriously. Which is weird because they're done pretty well, muted sickly color palette, creepy looking heads but meh, maybe it's the stiffled animation. Particulary the torso, that one's hilarious for me. It shoots 'blood' by litteraly throwing giant blood cells at you. Pffhh

Im here after the Gynoug release announcement for modern consoles.. man I almost forget this title, if not for the announcement, I will simpy forget this forever.This is the title that introduced me to shmups way back. Will definitely pick this up once it's out on PS4.

I'm curious about the plot of this game. It looks like an angel warrior fighting the armies of hell? But then it gets to weird shit like the cyborg torso and I'm really not sure where that fits in.
This was one of the hardest games I've played.
