  • You see the whole process, from concept to cutting the blanks from a single block of Tasmanian blackwood through to the finished box. You see how I develop and refine shapes, and then in the last five minutes of the video see how the following morning I decided to reshape the lid, risking the whole project. There are good views of using a spindle gouge to shear scrape and using a roughed bowl as a chuck to refine the base.
As I rough out the lid you see the gouge suddenly lose its edge as it hits the remains of a mud wasp’s nest.

Always enjoy watching you walk us through your process. And also how you decide and make changes on your designs. I always learn so much from watching listening to you talk us through every step of the way. Thank you so very much!

As usual, a masterful job of taking us through your thought process in meeting challenges while trying to achieve your original design. You are the best teacher!

We all greatly appreciate your teachings. I have purchased three of your books, continue to go back and read them, together with these educational videos we all keep learning.
    Thank you!

I could watch and listen to you all day. Thank you very much for these videos. I bought a coronet lathe recently and have watched a lot of your videos. This has enabled me to sharpen chisels properly, use them properly and achieve results that has made me proud of myself. The skew is still bugging me with catches but with practice I'll get there. Thank you again Tim

Nothing short of elegant, dear sir!! Your approach and then re-approach is great lesson to us all. Thank you for sharing. I also took note of your sketching style... To create the outline or profile and then to shade the background. I will try that myself.... Thanks!!!

Great pot and showing lots of useful techniques. Yet again I Have Learned, for which I am thankful.
Being a mere youth in my late 50s, however, I did find myself snickering away when you were taking about the shape of your knob. I'll go and sit in the corner.

A beautiful piece of wood turned into a very splendid box. I had never considered using formica in such a way. You did better indeed, I'm sure your report card will reflect it. Many thanks for another educational and entertaining video.

I finished one Tomislav-style lid which doubles as a serving dish this week and sized and decorated just perfect so that the jaws did not mark it, but it's a little difficult to get ahold of with the fingers. Could be that my hands are paralyzed so I have a harder time getting ahold of it, but I don't think I have enough wood to re-turn it. Anything I take away will only shorten it because of the undercut so that the lid sits as a serving dish. Might have to be one of those learning situations or I could put a finial on it. Thank you for enabling us to come back to a project multiple times to improve it.

love the trick to get square and straight cuts on the bandsaw. :)
why does rice bran oil suit your purposes with this piece better than, say, BLO?
very interesting cove for the top handle; bit of a combination of both spindle and face work. definitely need to give that a go with my next lidded box.
this video definitely has a lot of "thru the magic of television" moments to speed things along. :) (which means i bet this one took more editing than most of your videos)

Frustrating not to be able to put one’s hands through the screen and touch things like the little decorative grooves meant to hold the expanded jaws. So much information is tactile. As always though, this is chock full of useful instruction. Thank you.

Верхняя крышка вазы очень будет большая по толщине, массивная, крышка по весу будет больше нижней части. Я делаю такие вазы по диаметру меньше нижней части
