I bought this monitor for less than 300 euros on a BlackFriday deal and I'm blown away. Coming from a TN panel, IPS looks similar to my phone's amoled screen, with strong colors all around, great viewing angles. You have a ton of modes to customize (about 10 of them) so either if you are going to watch a movie or play a fast paced fps game, you can switch between modes in seconds. I'm not an expert by any means, so I just use the standard mode with slight adjustments in terms of brightness and freesync

For those inquiring about the BGR talked about on the forums, setting ClearType structure to BGR handled most text, and another solution that will handle 100% of text is since the mount is standard VESA and even the factory mount/stand uses it, is to flip the monitor and set landscape orientation and the monitor becomes 100% RGB.

    • @wujianhong

This is pretty consistent with my own M27Q. My unit has some glow in the bottom corners, the left side especially. I used "balance" overdrive at first, but after noticing some overshoot I dropped down to picture quality and left it there. I was able to match the white point to my Pixio PX275h without much issue, but the M27Q had noticeably less saturated reds.

Like a lot of people, I bought this monitor because of Tim's stellar review. I did wish hardware unboxed included text clarity in their review. Anyway, here's my take. I'm a programmer by profession. So I deal with text a lot. I was coming from a 4k scaled at 150% to 200% because I just love how sharp text with those scaling. I bought this monitor because I just wanted to try a high refresh rate for gaming.
With this monitor, no matter the scale or clear type settings, it justs makes me strain my eyes to the point that my head hurts. I did read about the BGR thing, and the only thing that worked for me is inverting the monitor and set the display to (Landscape Flipped). Of course, all your cables are on top now and OSD is also inverted. But the bigger problem with this setup is Adaptive sync doesn't work anymore. So you have to flip it back to make it work.
This monitor is amazing outside of text clarity though, video is great, gaming is great, color is great. It's really a good monitor for those. So I'm just waiting for my VESA arm to arrive, and just flip it whenever I'm on the desktop and flip it back whenever I do gaming.
I'll probably use this as a secondary monitor and just wait for a 4k, 144hz monitor to be mainstream. Right now it's a bit pricey.

For the people asking about the monitor:
    1. The monitor has 2 USB ports for the KVM functionality. You can daisy chain USB hubs, but that is not recommended for power hungry devices like external hard drives, which often require a USB hub with a power source. Mouse, keyboards and USB headsets aren't very power hungry so you could use them with a daisy chained hub. I'd make sure it's a USB 3.0 hub though.
    2. The monitor comes with a USB TYPE-B male to TYPE-A male 3.0 cable, about 3 feet long, which is used to connect the two USB devices to one computer (USB-B goes into the monitor). It's a good enough cable, you won't need a separate one. This cable does not transmit display.
    3. In order to connect the second computer/laptop, you need to use the USB type-C port found in the back of the monitor. The cable for this is NOT included, so please make sure you have one before buying! You'll need a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or Gen 2 cable (TYPE-C on both ends) to transmit video and the signal for the two USB devices. If you don't want to transmit video with this cable or your second computer does not support it, you can just use a regular Type-C male to Type-A male cable to connect your USB devices to the second computer (this won't transmit display).
    4. You might be wondering if what I said above means you need a computer or laptop that supports display through USB Type-C in order to use KVM. That is not the case. The monitor has a KVM Wizard which lets you choose which source to use for each computer: For computer 1, DisplayPort for video and the USB-B cable for the USB devices, and for the second computer, HDMI for display and the USB-C for the USB devices. This is an example, you can choose any combination you want. Do not worry if you don't have a laptop that does not support display through USB-C or doesn't have a USB-C port, as long as you have the right cables, you can use KVM.
    5. The ports do not allow fast charging. These are for USB devices only, but you can still transmit data.
    6. YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE BUTTON AT THE BACK TO USE THE KVM. I see a lot of people saying they won't buy this spectacular monitor because of having to press a button at the back of the monitor. You can use OSD Sidekick to set up a hotkey to switch computers using KVM. Mine's set using Ctrl+Alt+End to change computers.
    7. If you are planning to use KVM for a work laptop or computer like me, you DON'T NEED TO INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE TO USE KVM, NOR TO USE THE HOTKEYS YOU SET UP. If you installed OSD sidekick on your personal computer and set up the hotkey, you don't have to download it on your work pc as well.
    8. The monitor supports AMD FreeSync premium. You can also enable G-SYNC, even if the monitor doesn't say you can. I have an RTX 2060 with G-SYNC on and it works marvelously.
    9. The stand does not support portrait view. You'll need a separate stand in order to do that. For me at least, that is no problem. I use this as main monitor so I always use landscape. The stand tilts up and down, though. Not the most ergonomic of stands, but if you have an arm support stand like me, the original stand won't matter.
    10. You can connect a 3.5mm audio device to the monitor, it acts like it is part of the whole KVM thing. You will hear the sound of the active KVM computer through this if you selected the M27Q audio source in your operating system (like any other HDMI or DisplayPort monitor). Just remember that this audio comes from HDMI or DisplayPort sources, so it will NOT carry mic. If you wanted to use the switch for a headset (which has a built-in mic), you will not be able to use the mic unless you connect the headset to the KVM USB ports using a DAC. Since there are only 2 USB ports, I suggest connecting a USB hub for your keyboard and mouse in one KVM port, and connecting your headset with a DAC on the remaining KVM USB port.
    11. This monitor supports HDMI 2.0, but NOT 2.1. This means you will be able to use this monitor at 1440p with a max refresh rate of 144hz using HDMI, but not the full 170hz. This is because of HDMI 2.0 limitations. If you wish to use all 170hz, you will need to make use of the USB type C port used by the KVM (USING A USB 3.1+ TYPE-C MALE TO TYPE-C MALE WITH DP ALT MODE COMPATIBILITY) to transmit video. Since the monitor only has 1 DisplayPort connection, I suggest using the USB type C cable with displayport alt mode to get the max refresh rate on both of your computers. If you're WFH and using this monitor for its KVM functionality, and your work pc only has HDMI, you can still use 2k 144hz or 1080p 170hz to work. I don't really have an issue with that, but this is just something to keep in mind.
Let me know if you have more questions. This monitor is great for productivity and WFH workers like me, but also for gaming. It is a godsend!
UPDATE: I just found out that using a DAC + USB 3.0 HUB doesn't work with the KVM. One of the devices will not be recognized, most likely due to the internal KVM not being powered, and the DAC needing more power. Sorry 😐

    • @SirRFI
      @SirRFI 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Most valuable comment. I searched a lot about how KVM works, but most just short it to "Plugin stuff to USB-A, laptop to USB-C and just switch between", with no mention of USB-B or so.
Does this KVM effect input lag - if so, by how much?

With the PS5 out, I think a nice addition to these 1440p, 144-170hz monitor reviews would be knowing if they work well with the ps5 (meaning that they take 4k input and downscale it to 1440p or take 1080p input for higher refresh rates). Not every monitor can do that with the ps5 so it would be great knowing if they actually support that feature.

Love that u cover the color accuracy (and other image quality aspects) matter! helps a lot designers and graphic artists here! :) . Specially for those of us *cough* looking for a second monitor, cheap but still somewhat accurate...Hmm.. I think with a hardware calibrator, a colorimeter, this could be useful as a second monitor (for panels, reference, documentation, client docs, etc). BTW, IMO it is more important Adobe RGB, as is mostly the standard in most apps (particularly in Adobe suite). P3 has got heavily used specially in iPads and macs, but even there Adobe RGB is widely used (again, as is an standard in Adobe suite, by default settings!). Anyway, wide color range still, one way or the other, I don't think it'd be much issue to adapt workflows.
BTW, I was expecting worse uniformity in this price range.
Still, I know of a bunch of even 250$ price range monitors that beat this one in color accuracy, uniformity, white balance, etc (though not for much!) , but of course, many of them are crap for gaming!. Slow refresh, some even just 1080p! (believe it or not, I have a pro monitor at that res, hehe, works fine for design/illustration/3D).

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@sudoo6987 The old good guys are still good: BenQ SW240 and Eizo 2420 CS. But also lower 100% sRGB - only screens.
Consider that "only" 100% sRGB is good enough for a lot of illustration. You just lose the ability to work with certain intense and saturated tones.
I'd say a external monitor, ie, plugged to your laptop's HDMI *or better*, display port (but non relevant if the screen is only 100% srgb) if it (both the monitor and the laptop) has it, would allow you to work more comfortable (bigger screen size, surely better posture, etc), and also might be better for detail, etc. Also, with extended desktop (setting in Windows settings/Screen), you can then have the laptop to show the references, or a client's document, or simply some menus in there, and the main painting program in the Pc monitor.
The monitor... Probably a Benq of the lower range, but so that it has at least a 100% sRGB. Or other 100% sRGB monitor from Dell (ie, their Ultrasharp line), Asus ProArt, or a good LG. I mean, all of these if you need to use a budget of around 200- 300 euros/dollars, instead of going 500 - 700 for the Adobe RGB monitors (the Eizo and Benq that I mentioned at the beginning of this comment).
I personally find more useful and comfortable to plug my laptop to a good old keyboard (any super cheap PC one) and a regular mouse (ie, not to the tiny ones often used in laptops, not that great for carpan tunnel and other issues). Specially noticeable in long sessions. In terms of keyboard and mouse, people get really crazy, but really a sturdy cheap one like the BASIC Logitech ultra cheap ones, those are good to go. And much better than other brands in usability and endurance.
Whenever you get the cash, get a BenQ SW240 (500 euros in Amazon, now). This one supports well Adobe RGB. Is not an Eizo (my favorite, I have the 2420 CS series, 730 euros right now in Amazon) but it is very good for illustration. But beware, BenQ monitors are often *super bright* (Eizo too! but I found a trick to be able to calibrate it at a very minimum brightness, as the Eizo's software tries to avoid it) , which might be very bad for your eyesight. Be sure to calibrate it or simply manually use the physical controls to lower the bright as much as you need till you are comfortable.
It is always a trade off. Cheaper monitors will have issues with uniformity, not so accurate color, back light leak, dead pixels policy, etc. As much as you become aware of these issues, it's all fine (well... often, even if you don't).
Now, for color calibration. It's around 300 bucks to get the real good thing, an i1 Display Pro, but there's another "good enough" one for around 150 bucks. You can go for the latter.
If, considering the investment of the monitor, that escapes your budget (and I'd definitely prioritize a good monitor first) , you can be a while calibrating by software, with DisplayCAL. But then, though calibrating by hardware isn't easy, by software requires that you will read a few more tutorials than just using a color calibrator, I mean, a colorimeter. By software you can reach a very well balanced image and color in your monitor (even very cheap ones) if you put the time and patience to learn how DisplayCALl is used. It is a free software. You can find it by typing displaycal on google, but if you want to be sure not to land in whatever other page is typing that word in the url field, and then a "." and then "net".
Don't let any of this to deter you from painting and illustrating. You can do art even with a 45% sRGB support screen. You'd just have a lot less control and might need to fix stuff that will only show up once printed or in better screens. But is not like you can't make gig and projects with bad/cheap hardware. I've done graphic design and illustration with terrible monitors at many companies. You just deal with the issues.
If you are in a hurry, though, or have not yet such knowledge about calibration and need to deliver *asap* work and gigs you have pending, in any cheap monitor, there tends to be in the OSD menu (that which you control with the physical buttons in the frame of the monitor) which among its options, you can find on screen a "sRGB" profile. Just set that one, as is thought as a standard, and might be a way to ensure already a good setup. Just like in the more expensive BenQ SW240 or of course, Eizo CS 2420 , they also have it but as well an "Adobe RGB" profile, which would be the one to choose in those (Edit: actually nope. Sorry. In the expensive ones, you'd surely use a colorimeter and let it build a color profile, by you using the colorimeter's or monitor's software properly. You would set "Adobe RGB" as color profile in software like Photoshop. But when *not* having a colorimeter, yep, set Adobe RGB in the monitor's OSD menu, or "sRGB" if it is just a 100% sRGB monitor)..
Despite setting the template... _some_ monitors allow as well to once done that, tune colors a bit, with the buttons. In most cases it's not so, you choose sRGB or you choose "custom". Problem is, in the cheap ones, sRGB is often poorly configured, and often pays better to swap to "custom color" and set the amount of green, red or blue that you see is needed to get things right in color. For this way of tunning the color, a lot of people put besides a screen that they know is well configured. And tune the new one with those buttons (of the new screen, only!!!) until they get it to match. Problem is if the other screen is wrong and they don't know (a hardware calibrator, a colorimeter is much safer).
One good measure, on the very cheap, that yet kind of works for many situations, is ask for some firend's help, a person that owns an iPad Pro, or a macbook pro, or probably even just a current (or last year, or from 2018 or so) regular iPad (not so sure about this last one, though). All these come configured to P3 color space. That's way wider than sRGB (but a bit smaller than Adobe RGB), so, some (veeery few and rare)tones won't show up on the iPad Pro, though such colors *would* show on a professional EIZO, but still, ipads pro come pretty "OK" (not perfect!) calibrated. Or at least, much better than many cheap PC monitors. A cheap PC monitor is much worse than most Apple screens, at least by default before calibration or tuning. That said, I would not change my Eizo for an Apple screen (but that's me).
So, you proceed so : Choose an image with as many range of colors as you can find. Ideally with some intense colors as well as some more subtle: specially people's faces. With the image loaded in both, and in a image viewer that you are sure it displays well color (ideally a Photoshop, or Affinity Photo, etc. As many image viewers are not color managed. In the iPad Pro, in any app) You put the iPad (ideally Pro, even an old one!) besides your new PC monitor (screen). Now you adjust the red, green, blue (and brightness and contrast as needed) in your monitor OSD menu in the new PC monitor as you need to make the image in the PC as close in every color, tone and shade (of greys, too) as in the iPad pro. Pay much attention to the subtle very dark or very light tones, and in the hue color varitions. Like a green that is more blueish or yellowish in one or other screen, or red is too magenta, etc. Not to modify in the iPad Pro, but in the PC physical controls (OSD menu).
Now do the same with a greyscale image with as many values and contrast as you can find. An illustration or photo in black and white with very subtle tones "almost white" and very subtle tones very dark. As well, check how deep black looks in both screens. You don't want black to display like dark grey, although hardly you will get a very rich black in the PC screen, if it is cheap.
Once you get it to show a very similar image with both images (color and greyscale), you at least have now a "not too terrible" PC or laptop-PC monitor to work with. This can be done even with the cheapest screen, it's just that you will notice the limitation, gradient cuts, lack of subtle light or dark tones, uniformity issues (ie, one color looks one way in one area of the screen, slightly different in another area. But I worked with one so, I just knew how to compensate... bosses can be very resistant to get you a proper monitor... :S )
So, there u have it: You have the colorimeter way (best), OR using DisplayCAL, OR doing just with you eye estimation (worst, but often very effective just to make your commissions/gigs).
All the 3 can be made with an expensive or a very cheap monitor. And any of the 3 will improve the situation, just not as effectively with each method, but will be an improvement with any of the 3 ways. With a colorimeter like the i1 Display Pro + The BenQ SW240 or the Eizo CS 2420, you pretty much get a 1:1, full accuracy workflow (not that 100% accuracy is possible, but you get a lot closer than with a regular laptop's screen and no colorimeter).
In this economy, though... you can opt to keep using your 100% sRGB laptop for a while, till you earn some money with illustration gigs, but try to calibrate it with the free DisplayCAL software. If that is too complicated for you and you get lost (reading tutorials and their doc is not that hard, though) , then do the "eye-manual" way that I mentioned as last resort, IF you count on someone with an iPad Pro or a MacBoook Pro (probably as well with a macbook Air or a regular iPad, but dunno if I can be so sure about these two as with an iPad Pro).
Edit: OH! Beware the " *Truetone* " and some other feature of the iPads... If that is activated, it is adapting color and lighting to the lighting of your room, or changes of light during the day. This can make you mad when trying to set an accurate color by comparison, in your PC monitor. In design and illustration, that thing is much better deactivated. But remember to leave it to your friend as it was, it's their ipad pro after all ;).

@@3polygons thank you for a very detailed response. also sorry for a low effort, laid back question from my side, i was just not expecting a response.
starting from my rig: i have a asus laptop(g14), and i think it was factory calibrated as far as i remember. ive been using that as a primary monitor for my art for a like 1.5 years now. the main reason i bought this laptop was bc of its screen(it boasts 100%srgb). i use a a cheap huion pen tab(hs64) i have not upgraded it ever since, i have good mouse and a custom keyboard lol. i had a 15year old monitor of a friend which just died lmfao a couple of hours ago thats why i am worked up a bit lol.
anyway my current setup is now back to a single screen (+my smartphone screen), there's no way i can survive on a single display essentially. i know i had to make a decision to buy a monitor so i had been looking and gathering information slowly but didnt knew this day would come this soon.
as an artist(also a casual gamer) its very hard to find relevant information for us, most of the information i find is mostly spoonfed for gamers. so, i would like to thank you for laying the road map for me.
before this video i basically finished watching this video( th-cam.com/video/wrhTwuXgiHg/w-d-xo.html ). with that i atleast understood that i need more colours. so yeah i had been eyeing on that sw240 from benq too since it boasts 99% adobe rgb and i think now that is relevant to me too as one of my illust is going to become a merch, leaving aside the whole thing of how im drawing it in srgb and its a print material. i think it is time for me to invest on a high colour not necessarily high res display. and start drawing all my illust on adobe rgb(i use csp).
the dilemma i found was either to gamble on a monitor which might not be the best colour calibrated or buy a pen display. i dont necessarily need a pen display, since i can draw looking at the screen just fine but the perks are that i get better colour calibration from the get go. but they are expensive. the perks of the monitor maybe that i can game on them too(yknow all that fancy gaming specs) but obvious downside being high contrast ratio and poor calibration.
i can definitely not buy a colorimeter. al least not now. they are very expensive here, so i was also looking on some ways that i can find one in my city (if they are any) and rent it lol, i do have friends with mac and ipads tho lol.
the third wheel comes in with sw240, it looks very attractive, but i cant game on it sadly enough, i can game on my laptop screen just fine tho since it is a gaming laptop. the thing about m27q that excites me is that it is a gaming monitor that has great colour calibration out of the box and can be improved even without a colorimeter i think but most importantly it has 95%ish adobe rgb. while being cheaper than sw240 or any pen tab for that matter in which i might be interested. i think the 5% trade off is worth it but what do you think im very curious on your opinion!! tbh 27" might actually be an overkill for me both in general and by wallet. im more interested in 24" monitors if i can find any as godlike as m27q. im fine with 1080p i dont think screen res matters much but your insight might change that. since its going to be my second screen not the 3rd so i can maybe buy another one in another couple of years but not anytime soon.
my hot fix to get out of this pinch was straight up hooking the living room tv on to my system lol, the lights are flashbanging me but hey it works for now.

@@SilentButDudley and do you think the differences are worth $80? I can get the G27Q for around $80-100 cheaper than the M27Q (the G27Q is 350 and the M27Q is 440-450) Or is Viewsonic vx2758-2KP-MHD for 380 the better option out of these 3 monitors?

My god, thank you!!!! I was waiting for ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ1A 27” HDR Gaming Monitor, WQHD (2560 x 1440), 170Hz to go on sale and it never did. It is $430 and then you guys make this video about a monitor that is on sale at $340. I'm looking to play Apex Legends Competitive and will need a 1440p Monitor for my single PC Build for Gaming/Streaming. Will also be able to use my laptop as a Monitor to read chat thanks to the features reviewed. Awesome!!!

Good review. Did you notice the blue and red color lines by the left and right bezels? Apparently all M27Q monitors have it... Anything to do to fix it? Maybe it's due to BGR pixel layout instead of RGB.

Yes, because I am now looking that monitor, because this has BGR subpixel layout and therefore it is useless for desktop use.

    • @pgsppfor
      @pgsppfor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@xvnbm It's not useless for desktop use, not by a far. I recently bought this monitor, and text is normal, sharp, as it should be, without adjusting it through cleartype it was a little bit "foggy", but after cleartype, can't really see a difference. This is a perfect monitor for this price.
The color gamut, IPS viewing angles, brilliant response times with whites as well as blacks, makes for a no-brainer buy. G27Q has much worse black uniformity, a LOT of ghosting in overdrive, very bad black smearing at almost 20ms dark response times.. much worse in every aspect other than contrast ratio.
I was about to buy the G32QC but after looking this monitor (M27Q) up, seeing this review, I'm absolutely not regretting the buy. Check rtings.com also for very good reviews/comparisons.
