When I was a little girl with ADHD, the way we'll-meaning grown ups thought to correct was to say "you're not being very obedient" "don't be lazy" "you should keep your room clean" (when as if just wanting to do it would make it happen.)
This taught me to feel shame every time I didn't comply with my own good intentions.
Now, as an adult, I teach myself systems to accomplish things, and I teach myself to do fewer things, because I have limited time and energy.
Shame and control tactics, even with the best intentions, do not take someone from wanting to build a habit to having that habit. It only makes them feel bad about not doing it.
Poor kid. I wish I could mentor him on how you read his scriptures more consistently. I was never perfect at it, but I know more about strategies than Bernar seems to.

    That poor kid!
I am still traumatized by an area authority calling me in front of a hundred or so other missionaries to practice a baptismal invitation. I was not feeling "the spirit" that day and certainly did not want to be there, much less try and perform for others. I just said some un-manipulative, to-the-point question like "Do you want to be baptized?" and let him critique me just so I could get out of there as soon as possible. And I was a 21-year-old missionary. I can't even imagine how that poor young boy dealt with this.

There is no difference. They're being manipulated into feeling the elevation emotion. Elevation is no more the "holy ghost" than laughter is of the devil. They're normal human emotions. Emotions aren't strictly limited to the obvious ones like anger, sadness, happiness, fear, etc. Disgust is also an emotion. That warm elevated feeling is an emotion. There are many, many emotions. None of them are an external being "speaking" to us. All of them are internal. The only external factors are those that bring them out in us. Indoctrinating people into thinking that one of their natural emotions is the Holy ghost is nothing more than a very clever (but run of the mill age old religious/cult) means of manipulation and control. The Mormon Church didn't invent it. They're just following the play by play of many other, less flimsily constructed and ridiculously fraudulent religions that came before them.

As a person who grew up in the LDS faith. I can honestly say that this boy's emotional reaction is very raw and genuine. Why?! Because it's all preconditioned emotional reactions that have been indoctrinated into every fiber and soul of each member since birth or conversion. Looking from the perspective of this boy, he's been taught to believe that Elder Bednar is one of God's chosen vessels, that being said, his emotional reaction in his mind and that of others in the room is being interpreted as "him feeling the holy ghost". All I can say is manipulation starts from an early age.

@@apropos4701 Well I can’t promise a short reply...President Kimball said, There will be no general warning to the membership of the Church that things will be shortly falling apart. We have been commanded to follow the signs of the times and that is all the warning we need or will be given. But the membership is asleep. Like the ten virgins, we have been commanded to watch and prepare, but like the people in the days of Noah, many members have become lulled into a sense of security. This 'lack of warning' is designed to weed out the tares; the 'all is well in Zion" crowd....when the cry sounds, there is no time for preparation." ("Faith Precedes the Miracle", Chapter 23). I do believe we are in the last days and we are witnessing 2 Nephi 19:14-16. The BoM warns us that our leaders will lead us astray. Members seem to think the scriptures are talking about everyone except us...but that is false...the BoM is literally talking about us. Members of the church. The belief that our leaders will never lead us astray is dangerous rhetoric said at the pulpit. They speak of Him but know Him not. They lay claim to the BoM but do not teach from it. Isaiah warns us, Jeremiah warns us, Nephi warns us, Joseph Smith warns us. D&C 1 is pretty clear. The introduction of the BoM literally says “that Joseph Smith is His revelator and prophet in these last days” and “contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel.” Full stop. I believe the infinite salvation checklist is a distraction and false doctrine. I believe this Presidency will issue a call to follow the prophet in complying with the NWO, under the guise of obedience. The BoM isn’t talking about the church members and everyone else, as if we’re the righteous minority...It’s talking about members of the church who follow the doctrine of Christ and members who “have strayed from mine ordinances, and have broken mine everlasting covenant.” We are taught to pray for truth concerning the BoM and JS. Because we receive confirmation of these truths, we automatically assume the rest of the church is true, rest of our leaders are legit, continuing revelation is all true...but we should be praying to receive confirmation of truth from every leader, about every revelation. 1 Nephi 12, 2 Nephi 28, D&C 93...Read the BoM as if they are prophesying about members of the church in the latter days, it is powerful and eye-opening.

I was about the same age when a Sunday School teacher used me as an example. Why? Because I laughed at an inappropriate time during the lesson. He was a local football star, some 8 or 9 years older than me--a much bigger size difference than the one between this boy and Bednar. The SS teacher held me while everyone in the class--some 10 or 12 people--came a punched me in the stomach. Then he smacked me on the head and everyone thought it would be fun to hit me on the top of the head so he held me which they all took a turn doing that as well. Why teachers feel the need to have things their way--making their own point--despite the cost has always troubled me. The football player? Well, he went on to be a Bishop, a member of a Stake Presidency, and a Mission President...

That was hard to watch!!! It was so off. Why didn't he notice or care that the child was frightened and crying and humiliated? Why did the audience just smile and laugh? Why didn't his mother put a stop to the abuse?? And when Bednar held onto the boy from behind and told him to struggle....that was disgusting!!! Then he said, "I'm pretty strong for an old guy." That is giving me sexual abuse vibes. The whole thing is witnessed by an audience....the boy's own parent...and it's filmed! And what is the little boy supposed to take away from that? How about this: "I can be publicly shamed and humiliated by powerful authority figures and no one will ever help me, and in fact, I should be grateful for the experience. The fact that that was an awful experience for me, and that every fibre of my being felt repulsed and outraged, doesn't matter. I must be wrong, and everyone else, including this "apostle of God" and my own mother, must know better than me."
Also, I am sure that was planned out. Bednar had his little "object lesson" thought up before hand, and the boy was told to ask that question. That's not something a kid would have asked or even cared about. "If I stop reading the scriptures, how do I start reading them again?" Give me a break! So the parents agreed to it beforehand. But giving the parents the benefit of the doubt, they probably didn't know that it was going to be THAT creepy and that their boy would cry. So in the same way, I am sure his mom felt powerless as well to stop the filmed "object lesson" and to question what an "apostle of God" was doing with her son. That was just awful all around!

I think he's got this backwards. It's the ones inside the church who don't have control. The church doesn't just have a creepy hold on them like Bednar does with that kid, it has a BITE (model) on them.
But not only is his point completely bass ackwards, he's also assaulting a child to make his point. Yes, assaulting. That is completely inappropriate contact and the kid couldn't be any more obvious in his discomfort. He didn't even try to get away when told by Bednar to do so because he was frozen in place in what is clearly a trauma response.
I don't know what's more disgusting and damaging, the message he's sending or the way he's chosen (for no good reason) to send it. He couldn't think of a better message or a better way to get it across? If that's what he does on camera in front of an audience, I shudder to think where his boundaries (or lack thereof) lay behind closed doors

Oh my goodness what a soft woke world we live in! It’s obvious what Elder Bednar’s intent and purpose was. The kid was a bit timid in front of others. I cried at my elementary program with adults staring at me. You want to hear my stories of coaches’ behavior around me and my teammates? The cussing, screaming, yanking, - one former coach (a once boxer) smacking my face around 10 plus times. Why are you not addressing those educational experiences?
Elder Bednar was teaching with an experience/object lesson that those participating won’t forget. Elder Bednar is an educator and he knows what will stick. You from the outside world trying to make things into something that’s not - “sexualizing” everything.
It’s a better mindset to think that Satan will “bind you” than the “oh I can always just stop the doing, repent after I embed myself in the fun and get back everything I had before”.
Sure there is always a way to turn around but don’t be nieve that the path to overcome addictions, consequences and hurt is as easy as it sounds. There is no need to shame I very much agree but we also need to recognize the mocking of the Lord’s standards when we rationalize our disobedience. As Elder Bernar showed the solution is facing and making moves towards the Lord - not away.

Betnar should not feel this comfortable touching a child like this. But could he come up with a much better analogy? Without a child? I could. Church teaches Guilt, shame, inadequacy, mind control, lack of worthiness, and fear. Fear fear fear . This is so unnecessary when we just teach positivity not devils, maybe our children will be more excited about living the gospel . They teach more about hell and damnation, ( d and c. ) than the positive effects of God's love. Leaders teach among each other confusion and contradict each other over and over the place. How does this happen in the only true church on the planet?? What do they say one negative takes 15 plus positive to correct.

And yeah he grabbed him… that wasn’t sexual everyone… maybe you’re all projecting your own thoughts into this???? Maybe???? So maybe check yourselves on that???

Do aaaaany of you ever spoke with the kid? And asked him??? 🤦🏻‍♂️
Oh yeah and regarding the shame argument…. Elder Bednar was showcasing what happens when we make choices that lead us away from truth and light…. “Wickedness was never happiness”
And right after he said “remember what it felt like to be over there” as a way to get back on track…. Hence the original question… “how do I get back to reading the scriptures”?
C’mon guys… this comment section and reaction looks more like ppl trying to find something to assure themselves of whatever prejudice or idealisms… rather than what is actually there!

This is awfully wrong in so many levels😐😰😰 the moment the kid started crying, elder Bednar should have had the human decency to let him go sit again or AT LEAST give some kind words. Instead he made him perform a representation of how by not reading scriptures everyday he would be grasped by the devil with no way of going back to "God territory". The kid was obviously super uncomfortable and did not wanted to be there omg. This was so triggering to watch
