When the game isnt throwing weird level gimmicks at you, it really is a excellent game, if repeptive. Nero is super fun, albeit he could do with more options as Charge Shot and Devil Bringer are pretty stupid lmao.
It was my first DMC game too! I loved it. Whenever I come back to DMC, it's always so fun when I get into it again. I'm not a pro player by any stretch of the imagination but it's a lot of fun
DMC 4 was a very bittersweet game for most fans. For over a decade, it was looking like the final game causing a lot of grief (DMC: Devil May Cry making things worse). "Dante, will we meet again?" was a really REALLY sad moment for me until DMC 5 was announced. But now it's much easier to appreciate this game.
Honestly I think DMC5 did a fair amount to boost my opinion of DmC. While I thought that the game was over hated even at the time (though it was/is very flawed and inferior to 3, 4 and 5), having it be the “end” of the series just felt AWFUL and really soured me on it. Thankfully 5 came out, nailed it, and was both critically and commercially successful, securing the series future. So now I can look back on DmC more objectively and see more of the positives of it.
@@kidrobot. "Really good" wouldn't be the word for DmC lol. It's a passable action game at best. Writing: Absolute garbage. Donte constantly acts like an asshole for no reason. Literally the only people who find Donte cool are angsty middle school kids who think smoking, drinking and constant F-bombs make you look badass. Graphics: It's fine. Soundtrack is also fine. No stand out songs unlike 3, 4 and 5. Gameplay: Decent, but not like DMC 4 or DMC 5 good. Combos are very limited. No lock on at launch. Blue/Red color coded enemies requiring you to use specific weapons on specific enemies is very anti-DMC combat since the whole point of DMC combat is freedom to create whatever combos you want. It's dumb that the game forces you to use a specific weapons. No style switching, which is a series staple. Dumbed down style meter which lets you get S rank by spamming basic repeated combos. Devil Trigger is a weird time stop that breaks your combos. Plenty more of issues with gameplay but those were the main things. If you played through the game while skipping all cutscenes and pretended the garbage story didn't exist, it's an above average action game, but DMC games aren't just above average. They are the peak of action games. The only good thing you can say about DmC reboot is that at least it was better than DMC2.
@@TheGrayAdder What's the positives in DmC for you, if it's alright to ask? My own direct experiences with games in this genre are the more uncommon ones and Darksiders 1, 2 and Genesis, plus one from 2022 by name of Soulstice. (which is *not* a Soulslike). To my understanding, Soulstice has combat inspired by DMC5, Bayonetta and DmC alike, while the story and writing feels a lot more like Darksiders. It's very good stuff which despite certain rough or divisive points, has very strong ones too and i can warmly recommend it.
He didn’t know Nero was his nephew from the beginning. He said he suspected it when he first saw him (white hair, Fortuna, crazy strength, etc) but he said in V he didn’t know till he felt how the Yamato reacted to him. So Dante knew when Nero fought Agnus the first time, got the Yamato, and it released so much power that Dante’s devil trigger went off for a moment.
Prequel denotes a game released that takes place before the previous game. For example: DMC 3 is the prequel of DMC 1 and 2 because it takes place before both games. DMC 4 cannot be a prequel because Nero doesn’t get his arm ripped off until DMC 5.
Those angel alike enemies sure looked like the ones from Bayonetta. Which is ironic considering the creator of DMC series made Bayonetta as well and this game came out an year before Bayonetta 1.
@megamanfan52 It's not much deeper, but i think 2 has deeper combat, and at least i can use guns in 2, unlike Peak, where you have to have a different character to do it
I really liked DMC 4, Nero was a blast, and was cool as a character, glad he had his own personality instead of just feeling like another dante. One of my favorite interactions was when Nero and Dante compliment each other's names for being cool.
Can’t believe I’ve been subbed for 3 years now. I remember coming home late from a night out drunk as heck and trying to relax before going to bed and your Sonic Heroes retrospective came up in my reccomended and I remember falling in love with that vid. It’s amazing seeing you keep it up and keep getting better.
@@thedredayshow9246how bout a time travel plot for the story. The past We get to see what kind of Devil Sparda was & how he first met Eva. The present Set 3 years after DMC5. We seen Nero & Patty trying to stop an evil cult that plans to resurrect Mundus. Which brings us to the future We’re introduced to the daughter of Nero & Kyrie. Who along her godbrother, Credo, who is Trish’s son that she had with a Demon who Nero became friends/rivals with at one point. Growing up in a dark future where Mundus is back. Nero is now his new dark puppet. Kyrie died after childbirth. This girl was raised by her godmother, who along her husband taught & trained her to be strong like her father. While there’s a resistance lead by Patty, that spent decades trying to take back their world from Mundus’s control.
What I love about DMC4 was Nero’s introduction & his fight with Dante. Him revealing to have the blood of Sparda, despite restoring the Yamato, which was a foreshadowing of him being Vergil’s son. His relationships with not just Dante, but Kyrie & Credo who along their parents were the only family he had as a kid. Dante retracing Nero’s steps, just to destroy the Hell gates with the new weapons. As well his Shakespeare face off with Agnus, while reclaiming the Yamato, just to return to Nero. The Savor looking more like Angelic version of Sparda, which could rival Mundus. Vergil’s visit in Fortuna, prior to DMC3, which explains how Nero was born. As well the gameplays for Lady & Trish, which could’ve happened again for DMC5’s special edition. And last the soundtrack, with the likes of Out of the Darkness, Idol of Time & Space, & Never Surrender.
I kinda liked playing with Lady despire being the characther with the smallest moveset and basically a gunslinger Dante on steroids. Fully charged Shotgun blasts are an eargasm and she has some unique moves Dante never got like a follow up attack to the Gun stinger. Although lots of her unique moves were added to DMC5 Dante in some way. Like the double jump firing Kalina Ann downward as the aerial gunslinger move, Charged Kalinna Ann shots and a nuke move with the Sin Devil trigger (that's a stretch though)
This game has no right being as good as it is. Yes it is a bit annoying to basically play the game twice, but the story is oddly good and humorous despite the repeat bosses. This is thanks mostly to Dante being absolutely hilarious in this game. That being said though, the core gameplay is absolute perfection, and this makes me come back to this game super often
The main things that really bring DMC4 down for me is the lazy backtracking we have to do as Nero and Dante and the story/plot could've been better but dmc never had great stories so i could kinda give that one a pass. Even Vergil's campaign is just going through the same exact areas that they did. Everything else though is top tier.
Your right J, unfinished doesn't mean bad, it just means it hasn't reached its full potential. This is coming from someone who has played quite a few unfinished games myself. Can't wait the DmC "reboot" retrospective.
Honestly, even a DMC4SE rerelease that adds QOL features like DMC3SE Switch did would go a long way. Like allow the player to randomize and disable the timer for Bloody Palace.
A DMC1 Remake with some QoL is actually a really intriguing idea for me. 1's unique atmosphere and level design with more updated combat and graphics would give it a unique edge over the other games and give its own identity in the process.
@@leithaziz2716 If for no other reason that a Level select option in DMC 1 I would agree. They could use the Engine from DMC 3 or DMC 5. Just please no bland re-imaginings like RE2/3.
@@hahalolz4512 agreedX , combat needs a complete overhaul, difficulty needs a lot of work, guns were super OP and Bloody Palace was boring and tedious.
I think the real miracle behind this game is the FACT that it's good, despite it's short comings. It was being made during a very tumultuous time for Capcom (when they wanted to westernize EVERYTHING, undercutting or over-inflating budgets, cancelling projects years in the making, or pushing out poorly received titles), with this game having a combination of time and budget cuts AND direct interference from Capcom's westernization push. Yet, despite all of the headaches and the less than stellar story and MASSIVE corners cut (the backtracking being the worst offender), the game itself was polished to a mirror shine, played perfectly on both the PS3 and 360 at a locked 60fps (which was rare for multi-platform games at the time), and had VERY LITTLE major (or even minor) glitches (I only ever got a temporary freeze during a Bloody Palace run). The game also looked excellent in it's environmental, visual, and art design on top of it all, and still looks like a very pretty game to this day. On top of all of that, there are tonnes of fun gameplay quirks that only this game has, and there are deliberate features and interactions that few even know about to this day (like that bosses have multiple grab animations)
Honestly, the polished mechanics, the optimization, and the effort put into the visuals are the saving graces of DMC4, even if the recycled and unfinished content holds it back. Don't quote me on this, but I remember hearing that DMC4 got the same budget as DMC3, which was definitely not enough for a game on brand-new consoles and a different engine. But, luckily, they used what they had of a budget to go towards the key element of DMC, the gameplay. The art and environment design for DMC4 might just be my favourite in the series. Fortuna just looks so damn pretty. Same with Fortuna Castle, and the order headquarters. As much as I love 5, they really should have channelled some of that stylisation into it. The realism is cool and technically impressive, but it wears off after a while (don't get me started on how stale the Qliphoth levels get by the end of the game). All I can hope for with DMC6 is that they bring a bit of style back to the visuals and environment
@@delusion5867 As far as budgets go, I heard something similar, only that they DID get more money at first, before it was scaled back to a "DMC3 budget", hence why I refer to budget cuts. Like I said, Capcom was behaving VERY weird in the late 00s and early 2010s with all manner of issues. And, yeah, I can see it. Personally, I actually don't mind the semi-realistic look of DMC5. Reminds me a lot of MGS4 in style. My favorite area that pulls it off masterfully had to be Mission 2, with the Hotel (such a beautifully haunting area). Also, I kinda dig the "Qliphoth root fusing to everything" look, as it did have some rather bizarre architecture and decoration that it pulled off, but I'm not gonna sit here and say its art design was better than 4. 4 just kinda felt like I was wandering through Italy again, but in a more fantastical, demon infested way which is always a thumbs up for me, lol. And yes, Fortuna Castle is also my favorite. Gotta love snowy, haunted castles. I mean, I get it. They deliberately made the artstyle look semi-realistic (ala MGS4) because they wanted this to truly be a "AAA experience" in terms of visuals (as they have said they tried to push visual extremes and styles with DMC games from 3 onward), and they certainly pulled it off with the RE Engine, but a DMC6 with an artstyle closer to 3 or 4 would probably be pretty awesome.
@@1Synner The first half of DMC5 was great visually, and I can distinguish the early levels in my mind. I really like how they blended the antique and modern look with Redgrave (even though the city was half destroyed). It also gave some unique arenas for fighting, the church against Goliath, V's more underground levels, the subway. The Qliphoth levels just fuse together in the end and the arenas end up basically the same, that being: big round red room. That's really my main gripe. Honestly, polished graphics but with the art style of 3/4 could and would be beautiful. Now I'm imagining it... damn, they need to remaster 3 (any excuse to play 3 again is good enough for me)
@@delusion5867 No, what they NEED to remaster is DMC1. God, could you imagine that game with style switching and on the RE Engine? The entire DMC fanbase would go nuclear from the hype.
I loved playing as Lady personally, all teh charge shots and positioning gameplay is really fun, and Kalina Ann's max charge shot is a goddamn nuclear bomb, you're grounded when you charge so again, positioning and timing, but it feels so good to see a health bar get obliterated by it, especially when it causes a boss to stager so you do it again to basically end the fight. About Turbo, this is something that i alway wish i could use, but the fact that you gotta mash even faster to use certain moves is a deal breaker for my hand is broke af, there's a mod of DMCV with hold to mash, i wish DMC4 got a mod like that too. I love DMC4, but i gotta admit, the enemy roster is one of the most annoying in the series, i hate the flying swords, i hate the tree dudes, i hate the infected enemies and they appear sooo much, 3 had stinkers sure, but the fact that fun enemies can be infected into annoying by the tree dudes bothers me a lot, i get that the challenge is to prevent that for happening but i dont give a shit i dont like it.
i played this game when i was a kid and loved it, rebought it for the ps4 and just got the platinum, i had to s rank all the missions in all the modes and yeah the campaign part was so repetitive but the combat is just so good i didnt care. bloody palace with trish was a blast tho.
I always like to come back to this game from time to time because lady and trish are playable characters, DMC5 Special edition was a disappointment to me.... is not at the same level to the special edition of DMC4, all we got was Vergil and some couple of modes and nothing else no Lady and Trish (don't get me wrong I love DMC 5 it's just that the special edition was not good enough to me)
Hopefully DMC6 might try to make them useful again, & not being useless as how Kyrie was when Nero try to save her from the Order’s mistakes. Like if Nero is having trouble with the main villain of the game. He’ll tell the two that this job is too big for him to handle on his own. Just like Dante. He was not alone. Corse it would be nice for Patty to appear as a major character for the game. With her becoming Nero’s hunting partner, while having her & her mother as family. As for Lady & Trish. For Lady, she’ll have the same weapons she had for this game’s special edition. That would also include a new rocket launcher, known as Kalina 3, which can turn into a sword. As for Trish. For this one. She can now shoot lightning from her hands, as another firearm weapon. She’ll replace the Sparda sword with the Alistor sword from the first game, along with the Nevan guitar from the 3rd game. Since both weapons are lightning based weapons. Plus her Devil Trigger gets an upgrade. With her changing her Human like appearance to a sexy Devil Lady, who’s all black & yellow, while having Angel wings to fly.
@@Wing-Zero-si1eu I like the way you describe trish, I'm already imagining trish shooting lightning from her hands just like the emperor from Star Wars
Yeah.... I honestly don't know if vergil should even count since he was a dlc. So dmc5se is really just turbo, LDK, and some graphical settings i don't use because i play with Turbo mode on.
Devil May Cry 4 will always be my favourite game in the series. (I haven't played DMC 5 yet, maybe that will change in the future.) The setting, the story, the characters, the bosses, the combat, the music! Honestly, the fact that the game is incomplete doesn't bother me, other than wishing we got a remake instead of the special edition. HOWEVER, where Capcom decided to place Nero in the wider world of the franchise has always baffled me. It just makes the world feel so small by just...making him Vergil's kid. On top of that, does anyone else think it makes no sense for Vergil, the guy who hates humans and his own humanity, to just hook up with a human woman, have a kid with her and then dip? Like, is it just because of his complicated connection with Sparda? Was he trying to replicate what he did with Eva? Was it part of a bigger plan? If not, then why? Making everyone related to everyone else just feels lazy. They could have expanded on the lore, themes and world-building if they'd simply disconnected Nero from the Sparda bloodline. And no, before I hear someone state that people don't care about the story of Devil May Cry, the third game was praised for its story, even the fifth game got that treatment. People care about good storytelling, I simply wish we would stop acting like this is a good plot point. ^-^'
Correction Vergil doesn't hate humans he hates his own humanity yes but not necessarily humans (remember he let's lady live twice in dmc3 when he could have easily killed her)
Truly good start for someone don't know what is devil may cry where in the past i bought the game cuz curious about it and after play it i play what before dmc4 just to know more about it .
This game is to me what Mega Man X3 was to you: imperfect perfection. I can go on about all of DMC4's flaws anytime of day, and yet I'd always end up saying that I love this game and that it's virtually a part of my soul.
The way you feel about DMC4 is similar to how I feel about Mega Man X8. The levels are gimmicky and not creative, but the feel of the game carries so much of the experience that I can't help but really like it anyway.
they literally say in a interview to a japanese magazine that they were afraid of the ''metal gear solid 2'' effect with dmc 4, dmc 4 was suposed to be nero solo game and dante was suposed to be a side character but after the terrible reaction towards metal gear solid 2 make they reconsider and try to put dante in the game
I've been playing DMC4 SE a lot recently because it's the only game in the series where I don't have the platinum trophy and replaying it made me realize why. I'd still call it a good game and the added characters are better than I thought they were, but the overall repetition and frustration really starts to kick in
I like that they added a second currency for skills. Buying healing items to keep you alive in the older games always came with the side effect of slowing your skill progression down. In the first one you might be better off dying and trying again to stay on the curve with abilities, blue and purple orbs since replaying missions was impossible, making grinding options limited.
DMC 4 was my first ever DMC game, and is still my most favorite in the series, and one of the most beloved in all of my gaming. It is so close to perfection... Also fuck playing as Vergil feels damn good there. I vastly prefer 4th artstyle and designs over 5th, and even the story of the latter is not much better, if not worse. As to gameplay I can't say, haven't played 5th as much due to weak gpu.
Same here. I been a fan of his work, when I was growing up with Power Rangers. Followed by Trigun, Wolf’s Rain, Bleach, & Code Geass. This was the first game for me to hear his voice. Transformers War for Cybertron was the second time I heard Johnny’s voice in a video game, with him playing Bumblebee.
Dante in dmc4 is the experience person cuz not just strong but wise where situation involved in whether use joke to kill tension or be serious where thing not in his favor.
I feel that the game doesn't do much with Dante becoming a mentor to Nero in this game. They do a great job from the first 11 missions but unfortunately it because the story just kinda...pauses until dante fights the savior them teaming up and interacting with each other is kinda limited.
Lady to me is just DMC2 gameplay that isn't shit. DMC2 is a gun heavy game in terms of combat. So Lady is just the gun character that isn't terrible to play. Sure she may not be the most mechanically crazy character but for making a ranged character for DMC I think she is the best. That is including V and all of DMC2. To quote a friend of mine who watched me play the games, when he was comparing Lady to DMC2 Dante/Lucia. "Oh my god you actually moved".
I would have loved to see DMC 1 get a remake using the DMC 3 engine if for no other reason than the Level select option. I actually enjoy DmC myself, I do have the entire series on PS4.
I have to disagree on leveling up styles with orbs instead of with exp. Leveling styles with experience is the better option because that allows the player to get used to that style and truly understand it as it levels up. Otherwise, if you level up the style with orbs, what happens is that you don't really understand what you're capable of with said style, and if you level it up to the max, then you'd have too many moves which you will not be able to put into combos in as confortable a manner as the exp option due to not having experience (pun not intended) with the style. And that wouldn't be bad if you only had 1 style, but that's not the case. We have 4. And you can change to them anytime. That's too much information for a player to handle when it's given in a fast manner, specially considering that DMC4 and 5 are supposed to be entry points for new players. A better option would be reducing the amount of exp required to level up a style instead of leveling them up with orbs, which don't even requiere the player to use the style before upgrading it. Just my 2 cents.
One of my personal achievements was i beating this game's bloody palace as nero on my first try with no super costume (since i have yet to beat dmd i haven't unlocked it). I just tried it on a whim to see how far i could get and completed it, got the s and finished under a certain time to get a gold trophy. That was my first time playing dmc4's bloody palace too. I felt like such a badass
Yeah, I can agree on the main campaign feeling lacking in this game (also that Dante's really entertaining in this one), I like the game nonetheless and think it's good but I mostly prefer 1 and 3 over 4. If I had any nitpicks with 4 Special Edition and both versions of DMC5 outside gameplay and presentation it's that you only have 1 Save file which in my opinion is stupid because I don't want to erase all my progress just to replay a game from scratch, back on Ps2, GameCube and XBox 360 I could somewhat excuse games with only 1 save file because memory cards helped in that regard and on 360 most games gave you the option to choose a storage device before the game starts.
I had heard they cut corners for this game, but this sounds more like the "corners cut" were that they had the thought to expand it with a Dante section and couldn't really get a big budget extension to make it unique, rather than them having money TAKEN from their budget that would have gone into a more elaborate Dante section. Same end result but slightly different path getting there. Whatever the case may be, I liked this game. It feels weird to say I like the world more, if perhaps not the level designs, than DmC, if only because I liked walking through a cohesive castle rather than DmC's collection of hovering clutter... even if the grappling hook action made for cooler set pieces than DMC4, I never really felt connected to the levels themselves in that game.
I tried to play through the franchise from the beginning to the end but so far, DMC 4 and DMC: Devil May Cry are the only ones whose campaign I have completed. DMC 4 is the one that really made me want to get into the series and try to play through the first trilogy. Despite my issues with it.
I think an interesting way to take dmc 6 if/when they decide to make it is to have you center around lady and Trish as they adjust to still running the demon hunting business while Dante is in the demon realm with Virgil . Dmc 4 I think is a good blueprint to use for there playstyle just expanded obviously, it could even feature co op since they toyed around w it in dmc 5 . Also I think staying w what 5 also did by rotating thru 3 characters, this way nero could still be in it , as I think his playstyle has a lot of stuff to build on
The best things about dmc4 is that it’s a game that would have gone down as a letdown but the fans were so loyal to the soil that they stuck with it for 7 years, made the game better with things like guard flying and dt distortion, then proved their loyalty by outselling dmc definitive edition with dmc4se. Because of that, capcom and everyone were able to forget the doubts and keep this franchise going
I like 4. I agree with most of the points, but not all of them. I have finished the story 35 times, gotten all the achievements of the original twice and then once of the Special Edition. After watching this, I think I have to revisit the story ... a 36th time.
Another great video as always J :) I gotta ask J: Are you ever going to review the 2010 Cult Classic game: "Dante's Inferno" The game has a fascinating history and legacy. And is much more than just a God Of War clone in my opinion. Plus it had a really interesting and actually controversial marketing campaign
You may not be aware of this but Dante was supposed to have his missions in Hell and then come out and do some of the missions in Nero's playthrough but not all of it! If you look at the DMC4 Concept Art, you'll see some cut content that never made it to the gme itself!
The special thing about this game is the fact that it has 5 playable characters (with the Special Edition), the most out of every DMC game. So the game essentially gives you more replay value than any other game in the series, but the way the campaign is designed, you just don't really feel like going through it again, lol.
Not gonna lie, I shouted "WHAT?!" when you mentioned that you have never cleared Bloody Palace without Super Characters. My first clear was also with a Super Character but, with time, I got better at the game and at reading the enemies, so I assumed everyone clears BP eventually after unlocking everything and with the all that gameplay experience after every campaign. You genuinely surprised me. And just to be clear, I don't mean to offend you.
Now that you're done with DMC5, do you think you'll make a video ranking all of the missions in the DMC franchise (like you did with Sonic and MMX)? Also, are you gonna rereview the Animated Series since that review is unlisted?
I loved playing as Nero in this game his moves and skills were cool being able to grab bosses as soon as soon i got to Dante it was okay for a bit loved his dark slayer style but then i missed playing as Nero after beating this game i went onto playing as Vergil now might try trish or lady later on hopefully
I really feel that, if this game was properly finished, Dante mode should been like the extra modes for vergil and thrish in dmc 2 or 3 - as in, keep it as is, but make it unlockable after you finished the main game. In exchange, a couple more weapons and levels for Nero
I'm not sure if you're gonna do the reboot but I have a funny story about it. During the lead up to dmc5's launch I was talking about it non stop. I basically told every one of my friends about it. One of the naught doom and dmc after calling to see if he should get it. I said yes you won't regret it. Later we talked about it and during that convo I realized I convinced him to buy the reboot not 5.my heart sank and was so apologetic. He said it was fine and when he got around to playing it he liked the first boss and was optimistic until the game kept going. He hated it after that point. This convinced him to get 5.
So fun fact about me: I never got that Nero was Vergil's son until 5 straight up told me. In my defense, I played 4 before I played 3, and when I did play 3, it gave me the impression that Vergil wouldn't sleep with a woman(or at least not a human one). What I always thought was that since Sparda did his whole kick demons back into hell thing ages ago, and was living peacefully(more or less) until Mundas found him, that Nero *was* a descendent of Sparda, just a...distant one. That Sparda had a relationship with a human long before he had one with Dante's mom, and Nero is a descendent of that line. It explained to me why Nero seemed so much weaker than Dante and why he didn't have a true devil trigger: He was simply too human by that point, the demon blood in him too diluted. His demon arm? Genetic mutation, that's why it's just kinda stuck that way instead of being able to turn it off like Dante and Vergil can with their devil forms. Looking back, yeah, I was dumb.
I been seeing a lot of DMC content on my my feed recently. Let’s keep this trend going to summon the next DMC game with Dante and Virgil in hell (co-op) into reality !!
Wait... was there ever a time where people thought Nero was Dante's son? When dmc4 was being showcased on magazines all my knowledge was dmc3, and not even all of it, but I immediately saw him and instinctually knew it was Vergil's mostly from design choices. Seeing him interact with Yamato when I played it years later made me nod.
People actually thought about it. Like did he & Lady had sex sometime after DMC3. And that the reason she wasn’t in DMC1, was because she was too busy raising Nero in Fortuna, while keeping it a secret from Dante, just so that he won’t have to worry about being a father.
For me. I always thought that Nero was a 3rd son of Sparda, who was born from another mother. Which would make him along Dante & Vergil brothers. Because if you remember correctly. Sparda had the power to use the two swords he give to his twin sons. While they also use the same sword he seal his powers in, which Dante use to defeat Mundus.
Not as great as 3, which is inevitable, but not as bad as 2 and that reboot. That's already a neat enough quality status as it is. And besides, it sure paved the way for the bigger and maybe even better DMC5, which should be a fine endgame to the Dante+Vergil saga
ever since DMC4 released, I actually preferred Nero's playstyle because the red queen feels CONSIDERABLY heavier than rebellion. and air play with nero is much more satisfaying to me
I actually 100% DMC 4 it's an incredible game with lots of depth. Despite the unfinished aspects all the characters feel great to play and once you master the combat each character feels great to play.
Tbh it's already so good but 4SE's additional characters and movesets complete it, I still want to play as Vergil but I dont have the game or a proper system because he looks extremely fun to play as especially with Force Edge and FE there is perfect, 3's wasnt that fun but not horrible.
Can't really complain about Dante's implementation and going back through the same stages because the story does take place throughout those stages and they've been doing that with Vergil since DmC 3.
Except Vergil was in the special edition. Basically dlc before dlc....kinda. Dmc3's main campaign wasn't compromised for the sake of forcing another playable character in. Especially one as complex as Dante.
For Nero, the story of dmc4 was the most important day of his life to that point. But for Dante... it was Tuesday
A reference to the Raul Julia Street Fighter movie. But for me, it was a Tuesday.
I think it's a bit understated that this game got tons of people into the franchise, which was a good thing for the future of the series at the time
When the game isnt throwing weird level gimmicks at you, it really is a excellent game, if repeptive. Nero is super fun, albeit he could do with more options as Charge Shot and Devil Bringer are pretty stupid lmao.
It certainly did for me, this was my first Devil May Cry game
It was my first DMC game too! I loved it. Whenever I come back to DMC, it's always so fun when I get into it again. I'm not a pro player by any stretch of the imagination but it's a lot of fun
yeah, I only got to play it when it was still relatively new because it was multi-plat
Chad Warden certainly took notice...

DMC 4 is my first game in the series as well as the one that got me into it the first place . Such a coolass game.

I really liked DMC 4, Nero was a blast, and was cool as a character, glad he had his own personality instead of just feeling like another dante. One of my favorite interactions was when Nero and Dante compliment each other's names for being cool.
Can’t believe I’ve been subbed for 3 years now. @@thedredayshow9246how bout a time travel plot for the story.
The past
We get to see what kind of Devil Sparda was & how he first met Eva.
The present
Set 3 years after DMC5. We seen Nero & Patty trying to stop an evil cult that plans to resurrect Mundus.
Which brings us to the future
We’re introduced to the daughter of Nero & Kyrie.
Well this is awkward....
You forgot to mention that when "demon" and "angel" appear in the same room, they will fight each other.
That being said though, the core gameplay is absolute perfection, and this makes me come back to this game super often
really? i didnt find it that good
The main things that really bring DMC4 down for me is the lazy backtracking we have to do as Nero and Dante and the story/plot could've been better but dmc never had great stories so i could kinda give that one a pass. Even Vergil's campaign is just going through the same exact areas that they did. Everything else though is top tier.
Your right J, unfinished doesn't mean bad, it just means it hasn't reached its full potential. This is coming from someone who has played quite a few unfinished games myself. Can't wait the DmC "reboot" retrospective.
which unfinished games did you play?
I wish capcom would do Devil May Cry remakes in the style of the RE remakes and maybe they could finish Devil May Cry 4.
Bruh DMC2 needs more of a remake treatment than any game in this series
@@1Synner I can't argue with that, just remaster everything like they did with RE
Hey man, we appreciate you reviewing retro, thats like all i make time to watch lately so this boomer thanks you. Subbed
I always like to come back to this game from time to time because lady and trish are playable characters,
DMC5 Special edition was a disappointment to me.... is not at the same level to the special edition of DMC4,
all we got was Vergil and some couple of modes and nothing else
no Lady and Trish (don't get me wrong I love DMC 5 it's just that the special edition was not good enough to me)
True

First game in the franchise i ever played and its the one that got me into the series. Great video as always J.
Somewhat on DMC3, but the intriguing stuff about Temen-ni-gru and the various sand based enemies isn’t really fleshed out, nor is Arkham’s background.
Correction Vergil doesn't hate humans he hates his own humanity yes but not necessarily humans (remember he let's lady live twice in dmc3 when he could have easily killed her)
Vergil is rather indifferent to humanity as a whole. As for Nero, the fact that Dante wasn’t the one to have kids is crazy to me
This video drops around when I beat the game for the first time while playing through the series; love this channel.
DMC 4 is one of my personal favorite games in the series. It's a great game, let down by a half-finished campaign, and little to do as Dante.
Truly good start for someone don't know what is devil may cry where in the past i bought the game cuz curious about it and after play it i play what before dmc4 just to know more about it .

For last ride came to die.
I’ve watched all your DMC videos on release
The difference in your gameplay from way back when and now is CRAZY
I've been playing DMC4 SE a lot recently because it's the only game in the series where I don't have the platinum trophy and replaying it made me realize why. I'd still call it a good game and the added characters are better than I thought they were, but the overall repetition and frustration really starts to kick in
My 2nd favourite DMC game after 5
Idc about it being unfinished, I have played this game for over 200 hours and Im still not bored
I saved up all summer in 2006 to get a PS3 for this game
DMC 4 was my first ever DMC game, and is still my most favorite in the series, and one of the most beloved in all of my gaming. It is so close to perfection... Also fuck playing as Vergil feels damn good there. I vastly prefer 4th artstyle and designs over 5th, and even the story of the latter is not much better, if not worse. As to gameplay I can't say, haven't played 5th as much due to weak gpu.
I can already see that full history video coming soon 😂🔥 appreciate the work🙏🏾🔥
Plus this was my first time hearing Johnny yong Bosch in a video game series aside from zero in marvel vs Capcom 3
Dante's got an arc in this game. It revolves around Nero and the Yamato, but it's still an arc.
Dmc4 was the game that got me into the series so its special to me
Me too. It was my first game for both the franchise & PS3.

I would have loved to see DMC 1 get a remake using the DMC 3 engine if for no other reason than the Level select option.
I actually enjoy DmC myself, I do have the entire series on PS4.
You mean RE Engine?
@@artistanthony1007 oops that was supposed to be DMC3.
I think a mix of curated and fresh replays sounds like good variety to me.
Dude, how are you this good at video editing?! What the heck
This was the first game I owned on my PS3 back in 2008(along with Resistance) it was my first DMC and i played it so much .
Another great video as always J :)
I gotta ask J: Are you ever going to review the 2010 Cult Classic game: "Dante's Inferno"
The game has a fascinating history and legacy.
I believe Vergil's moveset was actually inspired by the DMC: Devil May Cry Vergil's moveset. They are very similar if you compare them.
The special thing about this game is the fact that it has 5 playable characters (with the Special Edition), the most out of every DMC game. So the game essentially gives you more replay value than any other game in the series, but the way the campaign is designed, you just don't really feel like going through it again, lol.
The best way to experience DMC4 is the PS4 version with turbo mode on and playing the full game as the storm that is approaching.
What's your button recommendation for an instant exceed? I quite haven't figured out what works for me yet.
Try L1
Great review J! Guess this means mayo's should be out any minute now...

I loved this game and loved it even more when dmc:dmc was released, it made me appreciate it more despite it's repetitiveness
Good review; I have to replay DMC4.
What matters is that they got the important things right
I enjoyed this version of Dante the most, he was still Dante but he was older and more mature. Even his quips were more experienced.
Please make a review of metal gear rising revengeance
He already did
I know its a super hated game but you should do a breakdown on peak of combat aswell
I remember playing this game on ps3 and thinking the graphics were ahead of it's time.
I’ve always said that DMC4 would be the best DMC if Dante had his own levels and bosses. Would have been insane.
I loved this game atmosphere. For me 1 and 4 are the best atmosphere wise.
DMC4 may have been rushed but dang the combat in the game was amazing! Its ashame dantes section was a re hash back track of neros missions 🗿😭
Not as great as 3, which is inevitable, but not as bad as 2 and that reboot. That's already a neat enough quality status as it is.
And besides, it sure paved the way for the bigger and maybe even better DMC5, which should be a fine endgame to the Dante+Vergil saga
ever since DMC4 released, I actually preferred Nero's playstyle because the red queen feels CONSIDERABLY heavier than rebellion. and air play with nero is much more satisfaying to me
You should review Bayonetta series.
U must play spark the electric jester games, especially three, they r amazing!
im trying to platinum dmc 5 funny how you upload this
I have way too many playthroughs on this game compared to the rest
I actually 100% DMC 4 it's an incredible game with lots of depth. Despite the unfinished aspects all the characters feel great to play and once you master the combat each character feels great to play.
30:54 bro💀
Played this 2 days ago. Man repeat boss fights were a huge letdown
Yea the 2nd half kinda ruined my playthrough. The gameplay systems are really good but it gets really tedious to play the same game twice basically
Tbh it's already so good but 4SE's additional characters and movesets complete it, I still want to play as Vergil but I dont have the game or a proper system because he looks extremely fun to play as especially with Force Edge and FE there is perfect, 3's wasnt that fun but not horrible.
This I probably my favorite DMC game.
Especially one as complex as Dante.
it's amuseing to think about how in both thier 4th games dante and kiryu have the exact same role in the story.
Hey would you ever consider reviewing the Bayonetta or ninja Gaiden series?
Who else playing in 2024 I actually prefer dmc 4 SE over dmc 5😅
