Is Resident Evil 6 Really That Bad? No, It's Worse.

  • Resident Evil 6 is a notorious entry in the RE franchise. I have tried it once before but never finished it. Today is the first time I have ever completed the entire game. I went in looking to be optimistic and give the game a chance, but…that didn’t last long. Here is my explanation on why Resident Evil 6 sucks and is the worst game in the series.

The one bright spot I'll give this title is how experimental Capcom had gotten with multiplayer components. This game's multiplayer is like a weird combination of Outbreak, Left 4 Dead & RE5. I loved how you could invade others game, THAT added a much needed horror element to an otherwise laughably non-horror title. Also, special shout out to the converging stories, with brief moments of 4 player co-op. I hope more games do this in the future.

      @SHADOMEGA7569 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Honestly i do see why they made adas campaign unlocked from the get go, think about it, you played through Leon and Chris's campaign then you went through jakes replaying a ton of set pieces and after that you're rewarded with even more replayed set pieces. yes Ada's campaign was originally meant to be the concluding chapterof the game and for a while after release was the only campaign that wasnt co-op until capcom added agent as a co-op only partner.
honestly i can agree with J on the game reusing set pieces where your brain goes on autopilot during the last campaign. I will say that i did like the combat in this as it felt the most free flowing form of combat in the series thats not just pulling a trigger

I just played through RE6 with a friend a week back, and, honestly, it was a blast... Well, save for Ada campaign, which we gave up on because playing as the Agent is Not fun. We went into it knowing it wasn't going to be anything groundbreaking, but we were pleasantly surprised by the gameplay being genuinely fun and enjoying some of the story beats and character dynamics (especially Jake and Sherry). At first, we were just goofing around, but there were definitely moments that made us shut up and get completely invested, like the first time we saw the Chris and Jake confrontation or the end of Chris' campaign.
It's really fun if you don't take it seriously and see it as a huge teaching moment for Capcom. I honestly think without RE6, they wouldn't be in the place they are today, and while I think the hate at the time was understandable for putting RE in such a weird place that was following trends of the era rather than making them, as they did in the past and present, in retrospect I do think it's a really decent co-op game that has its flaws, but isn't the greatest sin imaginable. Not even the greatest sin from Capcom, looking at Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.
You definitely have to laugh at the jank, but it's absolutely not built for solo play (at least, not the first three routes). It's probably a 3/10 solo, but I'd put it 7-8/10 as co-op. It's probably partly low standards, as co-op tends to not have many good options on console, but it was still so fun.
Don't get me wrong, I've played almost every mainline game (save for OG1 and Village, which I'm going to get to both very soon!), and it's definitely the weakest in that regard, but it's surrounded by masterpieces.

I played Resident Evil 6 in its native generation. I have to give the solo campaign a B- and the Mercenaries an A. I only got to play multiplayer with my brother through couch co-op. I would say it adds something to the game playing with another person. I am just not sure what to rate it as. Definitely not a full rank added. There was a time I used to say Resident Evil 2 was the worst of the numbered entries. At that time the series was up to 6. I would backpedal or just end the conversation. The original Resident Evil 2 holds up differently, depending on what tier list I use. I have two separate metrics. Under metric #1 it does poorly only beating non-numbered titles. Under metric #2 it is a solid B+. I just decided to play Resident Evil 6 today for the first time in several years. Multiplayer was surprisingly easy to find a game. Though, people only stuck around for roughly 2 levels. Mercenaries were completely dead trying to find a match. Which is a shame, because in my opinion it is the best Mercenaries out of 4, 5, and 6. I would say the best Fortnite side game is better than today's experience with the game. Hopefully playing tomorrow will be more fun than today.

I have never known a more devisive game than RE6 (or at least one that I've played). For almost everyone it falls into one of two camps: either so bad that they couldn't makit it through more than 1 campaign (usually Leon:s) and those that do force themselves to do so and they hate it... or those that absolutely love the game and still play it occasionally to this day. I fall in the latter camp, I love to play the game. I feel its peak Resident Evil when it comes to cheesy-ness and over-the-top nature of the general stories. I love the co-op, it has in my opinion and many of those i talk to one of the best shooter gameplay mechanics, and i love there story and all the monster varieties. I also feel its one of the worst when it comes to RE-staples like survival horror tropes (as it really isn't a survival horror game anymore, just action with horror elements/inspirations)
Its also why i feel conflicted about the following game, RE7. Cause for RE7, CApcom decided to make the exact opposite of RE6, but in doing so i feel like they made a fantastic survival horror game but not a good Resident Evil game as RE7 left out many things that Resident Evil is. I feel like Resident Evil at its best is a combination of cheesy/charmy story/dialogue combined with survival horror elements (such as inventory management, limited ammo and healing), diverse enemy variety, charismatic/lovable/iconic characters, and a few other elements (like music, atmosphere, a blend of action and horror, etc)
RE6 was half of these, RE7 was the other half, and I feel like RE4 remake was the only RE game since that held the perfect blend of all these elements.
Edit: I also feel like people's opinion on RE6 can sometimes depend on your mindset going into the game and whether or not your playing it co-op with someone who likes/dislikes the game (also there's so much you can do wit the controls, but also so much the game doesn't tell you you can do so almost everybody I've seen play RE6 never uses the controls to anywhere near their full potential, making the game much more annoying and harder on themselves)

I 100% agree with you, and I'm a lover of RE6 myself. I think Resident Evil is about fighting bioweapons first and foremost, and that can be done with horror or action. Yeah from what I've seen of RE7 I'm disappointed that it seems so "western" if that makes sense. I say that because my favorite thing about RE is how fun, outlandish, and goofy the characters and story are while still being charming. Like when the franchise was still written by Japanese writers I thought it was amazing, hence my love for RE6. I've got a video over my admiration for RE6 if you want to check it out.

It felt completely wrong from the beginning, but it's not like there have never been games I didn't like at first but warmed up to. Plus, as a fan of the series from the very beginning, and a completionist in general, it felt wrong to not play a mainline installment to the end. So in order to judge it fairly, I forced myself to play the whole thing and never warmed up to it in the least.

I totally get why this game is so hated, and a lot of the criticisms are earned, but I personally have put so many hours into this game, and it does have a very passionate but niche following.
This is not a brag, but anecdotally, I went to PAX in 2019 and they had a booth at the Capcom side that had the new switch ports of RE 5&6 (weirdly not 4, though that was included in the release) There were some people, including myself that got in line to play the demo for 5, which as memory serves was that iconic tense defense of the town square from the opening segments, but no one was playing 6.
I was waiting for my friends so we could check out MH Iceborne, but I had time to kill, so I went to RE6. There was no line. It was the second level of Chris's campaign. I played the snot out of that, over and over over all three days of the convention, because people were watching me. The Capcom reps at the booth were talking to me. I played as either character. I speedran it. Played it on No Hope. Played it knife/melee only. People were enthused and asked to co-op with me. This game has such stylish action, and I showed people who'd previously wrote the game off all the cool tech this game has. I feel like I single handedly swayed some groups into playing this game and perhaps purchasing it that weekend.
I really admire what you do J, and I respect all your opinions, negative and positive, because they're very well thought out. And perhaps I wrote this, though not many will read it because I love this franchise and am dedicated to every era of it, including this one. I dabble in writing and analysis. During 2020, I wrote a several page breakdown on why this game is great, but I never had the courage to share it or do what you do. But maybe, just maybe venting this will bring me some peace.😅

I still occasionally go back to RE6. Mainly the extra modes and only ever on coop. The game has a ton of depth. The main problem is the game does not teach the player 70% of their options. Capcom created something incredible with 6 in terms of gameplay. ...Only again, they didn't try teaching players their options. Like at 4:41 when you got hit, you could've held L2 and rolled to the left or right. And, in some cases similar to like a fighting game, you have the ability to tech roll to get up immediately or roll to the side upon landing.
There's so many options in mobility and so many tricks in combat you can do that characters like Leon, Ada and Jill have always been shown to be very capable of in cutscenes. Personally, I prefer 6's controls because its accurate to who we're playing as. In RE5 when you want to dodge a slow charging attack from an enemy, Chris has to awkwardly run at angle or rely on a QTE. RE6 made it actually feel like you're playing as Leon/Chris. Now, if these were rookies, I'd agree all the mobility/combat options are silly. But, can't when we've constantly seen Leon and Jill leaping out of harms way with ease.
Of course knowing all the controls don't erase the late game action set pieces that are a pain to replay (the vehicles). I definitely agree with you there. I liked the comparison you made to how Uncharted handled it's pacing. I do think RE5 and RE4R still feel good to play, but going back not a fan of those moments where I know I shouldn't have gotten hit or died because they made the character stiff on purpose (or made dodging be a QTE popup). Honestly, I think it'd be a good idea if Capcom gave players the option to limit their control if the player wants to. So if you want to be able to dodge and have more dynamic mobility like you're really playing as an "experienced" Leon, you can. Or if you'd really like to, you can turn off manual dodging and use QTEs (RE5/RE4R).

I think the real difficulty curve comes from playing No Hope mode. Me and my RE friend play No Hope mode pretty often, and it definitely makes you manage your resources. I also think the replay ability is also pretty good once you collect all the weapons in all the campaigns, but like you said replay ability is all up to the player. I do agree the game isn't amazing, but I think playing with a friend improves the overall enjoyment. I personally think these things is what makes RE 6 enjoyable.

I wasn't familiar with yt at that time or thought that gameplays can be found. But one day i found re4 characters in a video. I was excited and tapped on that video, that was re6. From then i went to the nearby shop and found re6 coincidentally at 2018. I really loved playing it. I again loved playing it after seeing radical dreamer playing it. The only turnoff for me that it felt short. I hope it was much bigger. But still, as a player who doesn't buy & play 50 games in a year, this game felt very rare. I understood life in a way🙂👍

Something I desire if they were to remake it someday. Get rid of the 4 Campaigns and just give 3 good long ones.
Merge the Leon and Ada Campaign and bring them together again as they were in Re2make. Make the Chris Campaign less into a purely action based shooter and focus more on defeating BOWs Creatively. Wasn't a fan of a certain section where you needed to kill multiple giant monsters in an open area outside.
Make the Jake and Sherry Campaign into what bridges both the other campaigns together. Gives us some Leon - Sherry & Chris - Jake action in some way. leading to the Leon - Chris stand off, Final bosses & game ending. Oh and get rid of the QTEs. They're not needed.

  • @rdraken
    @rdraken 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Honestly I think that if they wanted to remake 6 I feel they need more to double down on the implications that each character is supposed to feel different.
Make Leon feel and behave more like RE2r. Have puzzles and make it atmospheric.
Make Chris more like his RE8 style. More action based. Heavy focus on gunplay.
Make Jake BE the Wesker game that some of us wanted. Make him have the speed and strength with less focus on gunplay. Make sherry have a minor healing factor (Something within reason) to make it feel like the characters have super human abilities in gameplay. Then make the not Nemesis BE so much more intimidating to compensate for that.
Make Ada's story be more about her stealth espionage gameplay... They already gave us a few bits. Why not make those the focus.
They could still do the crossover stuff and have those be a middle ground between the 2 styles of game.
This is what I feel like I was promised with RE6 stating 4 different campaigns.

I only liked Chris's campaign and Jake’s surprisingly since those were honest while not trying to falsely advertise unlike a certain campaign and the mercenaries mode is probably the only best thing about the game. As for Leon's campaign which at the time period this released I was the most excited for only to end up being the most disappointing one of them all and the most annoying to deal with in new game plus playthroughs.
Seriously some sections feel like they were meant for different campaigns or characters. After replaying the game I can honestly say I really dislike Leon's campaign the most am is the furthest thing from survival horror.

I think RE6 is a decent game. It's extremely fun with coop and roleplaying with each other. Not only that, but some things that happen in the gameplay is extremely funny; Like seeing your friend get run over by the ambulance because they didnt see it, having an interesting conversation during some moments between Jake and Sherry, getting the big Ustanak guy to catch your partner while you hide in the trash bins, suddenly seeing them fall off their bike in the snow, blatantly crashing into an approaching train, running up stairs only for your screen to suddenly show Chris falling off a bridge because they couldnt dodge all the barrels LOL RE6 is fun. Real fun.

The problem is that the campaigns not only do not play to this strength, they also fail to really teach the players how to best take advantage of them. It’s so focused on trying to cram everything it can that it overshadows what would otherwise be a really good shooter.

I have to say the story about Helena and Simmons was okay, but the story about Jake Muller and Sherry Birkin was really good or the story from ada and carla was the name holy shit that was good.In general, Re 6 has a good story, but it wasn't implemented that well, but overall it's the only one story that didn't fit in my opinion was the chris campaign that was really just hell but otherwise I would say re 6 is a solid re game and for 2012 the game looks 👌 😊

For me personally the J’avo are the most frustrating and unsatisfying enemies to fight in this series every time you think one’s dead it mutates. Now that was in 4 and 5 but unlike those games it didn’t happen nearly as often as it happens in 6 (I.e every 3 enemies it feels like) and when it happened in other games at least it didn’t take upwards of an entire mag and sometimes even more just to kill one enemy on normal difficulty. And for the zombies honestly in my opinion pretty well done fun to fight and feels like the perfect amount of health doesn’t take an entire mag like 2 remake, but they also don’t go down easily like 4

I liked the diversity of 6 for sure. I don't recall boring parts. For instance I feel like part 8 definitely has boring parts and it makes me not want to play it again but I feel like I would love to play 6 again. I also don't feel like playing 5 again simply because of the military theme as I remember it. I still haven't even played the 4 remake. I wish people would stop complaining about 6 actually. They nee to remake code veronica by far the most just because it had tech issues and certain story pacing issues.

"totally playable" not on launch. At launch I had no controller, I had just moved and hadn't found mine. I was forced to play on keyboard. The run from "not nemmy" In the ice area had a problem where the controls didn't work properly and sent you running BACKWARDS towards Ustanak, I MANGED to get through it. But piers and chris, running up the stairs and platforms had so many camera switches, I had to go BUY a controller to finish it. And then, a week later, capcom patched the controls.
Yes my bitter memories of that taint my memory of those sections, or rather, MAKES me REMEMBER those sections in that SMEAR of action that was RE6. Once patched, after revisiting it a year back... It was fun in CO-OP just taking the PISS out of it and sliding around with a friend indulging in brain rot, but it was... really kinda boring in the end, we both by the time we got to collecting keys as sherry and jake were just ready for it to END. The pacing is what killed it.

I played through the entire game with my brother, so it remains one of my favorite RE experiences. We could pass each other ammo and health and there was friendly fire, which I always love. I think it should have been marketed as a co-op experience instead. I probably wouldn't play it solo except for Mercenaries mode.
The game itself wasn't like RE2R scary, but it had that same overwhelming feeling that RE4R gives. I loved the action setpieces, honestly. And I felt like there was decent enemy variety because of the special enemies. And the characters crossing paths almost always had each team doing those parts in different ways or other parts of the same areas. They all felt distinct. Leon's campaign is the slower one, Chris's is the military shooter one, Sherry's mixed both and had Ustanak. 16:40 looks like they succeeded actually. The controls may be the same across the teams, but the presentation and tone still works. I liked the whole thing. But then I did play back in 2012 when I was 19.
The big action setpieces were done really well to me. *Especially* the Simmons climax. I mean, fighting a guy who turns into a lion, a T-Rex, and a giant insect? Pure awesomeness.
I'm sorry you didn't like it. After watching the whole thing, I still can't quite grasp how it was boring to you. Like... How does it blur together? The chainsaw BoW on the boat is nothing like the invisible snake or the Carla face, and Ustanak felt like an unstoppable force. The new regenerators were always tense too. Maybe the difference is that I played in co-op so the situations would feel more dynamic and engaging.

Like 6 months later did Chris, I really struggled as I basically had 2 saves right in the last level with no ammo/healing. Basically save scummed to win.
Sherry/Jake’s felt so long and just felt like it was made to be as annoying as possible. Which is a shame since I was excited to see Sherry again.
Then Ada’s is the one I booted up like 6 times over the years and play like 20 minutes before the dread comes back.

Say whatever you want about RE6, but it's extremely fun in it's own right and that the story fits in the universe, better than off RE7 & RE8.
RE7 and RE8 felt like completely different games that doesn't fit in with the main universe of Resident Evil. Ethan is not even interesting as a character, Rose is just another Jake Muller but not interesting like her father, and Chris doesn't really do much in both RE7 & RE8. The villains in RE7 & 8 are alright, but are nowhere near in depth compared to other villains like Simmons, Wesker, Excella, Salazar, Saddler, William Birkin, and Oswalt E. Spencer etc.
I wanted to see more about Jake, Helena, Sheva and Sherry's stories unfold, but instead we are stuck with characters like Ethan Winters, Rose and Mia who all don't needed to exists in the first place.

But the problem is that RE6 is not even a _good_ action game, and the weird split into different characters just hurt the narrative flow as well. RE5 was legitimately great (and seems to finally get the praise it deserves), RE6 was legitimately terrible even as a standalone action game. But at least the Oral Giraffe of a logo was funny.

it feels tbh like a mix between sticker star and 06/shadow in that regard with how:
leon's story instead of helena should've had him with claire & sherry(that would've made sense with how many times she runs into leon/how close she was with the 2.)with ada helping throughout instead of making you really question what he sees in her with her almost close to villain moves even past the clone angle, needlessly long final boss with the most ridiculous transformations even for this series, cheap shots with hazards/backwards inventory and feeling weightless in the guns feel.
chris being where the action becomes just as soulless as a shooter/like piers dynamic with him but felt weak he gets broken up when stood firm thinking jill was dead for years(who alongside sheva should've been in it/later games.).
jake felt fanfictiony/like dmc donte in areas with how angsty he gets when 5 had areas it could've made continuations of.
really showing they didn't know what to do after prematurely killing wesker with the villain being a rip off downgrade of nemesis and a ada simp.
it feels like 06 in that it was the lowest point(alongside the spinoff's/movies) but did give capcom a wake up call to go back to the horror handling the goofy cheese better.(that shouldn't get a remake just improve from it's mistakes.)

I think it'll be wonderful. :D Biggest fan growing up with his work too. Maybe I can send videos for you to be in the episode in the future. Please let me know.

Isn’t RE 5 camera closer to the character? Or are we playing on diffrent things? I play on steam/PC. Can’t say much about RE 4 cos I have that on Wii and I don’t think it really works that well compared to other consoles. I played Revalations on Xbox (I am bad at controllers😅) I liked it and learned to be a little better at controllers.
All of these games are very diffrent. I like them all for their own things. Sometimes I got pissed at RE 4 space things do that made me like RE 6 ones. I like them all.

    2 ways to improve RE6:
    - play it with another person, it is still an above average co-op game
    - play the chapters in the fan suggested order, it feels more like one cohesive story instead of 4 separate stories

Biggest tip I would give to a new re6 player, esp when you play Leon campaign part 1 . Melee and use the button to do a maneuver on them. Just save on loot. You get a decent amount of loot and can survive. You get a lot of herbs for the first good half. More so just use melee and use a end kill move.

Just a bonus commentary on the Re5 Sheva attack mode: While this mode is a pain depending which weapons you give to Sheva, because she going head on fights, there is a nice strategy to make: if you gave her the sniper and bullets you going to have the best headshot partner in the west hahaahhahaha
It's just a trivia but you can make differents loadouts to avoid Sheva been in trouble (and swap from attack to cover on the fly create more dynamic during the gameplay)

It makes me sad and happy that people's opinions on RE6 has vastly changed over the years and I respect valid criticisms about it as it is a deeply flawed game but people who hates each and every aspect of it just makes me sad. I adore this game so much and I hope haters of the game can still find some good in it. Have a great weekend! 👊🏻💜

RE6 sold well over 11 million copies in the years since, so there are many who also treasure the game dearly no matter how loud mouth those who like to criticize it are. Even so, the RE series was very much at a low point before RE7 (no thanks to RE6), Capcom between 2012 and 2017 as a whole was struggling financially, and not many were hyped for Revelations 1 or 2. The HD remasters for RE4 (2014), RE0 & RE1 Remake (2015) generated some much needed fanfare returning, but it was RE7 that brought the main tsunami fanfare back, with RE2 Remake (and beyond) just doubling on it further.

@@ryszakowy RE6 was never a good Resident Evil or game in general. It's easily one of the worst games I've ever played, though I'd place it just marginally better than Alone in the Dark 2008, Silent Hill Homecoming or Splinter Cell Double Agent. Even so, you can't deny there are still many of who like the game(s) for what it is (or they are). One man's trash is another man's gold.

I knew about the girafe, but I didn't knew about the bj, thanks, now I can't unsee it
My opinion about that game is really mixed
    - I loved Leon and Ada Campaign (too bad i played it last because it was cool, but jake campaign killed me)
    - I was completely bored of Chris campaign but I really liked the story (that's quite uncommon for an re game)
    - I hated jake campaign
Worst part was the qte of jake campaign, when you had the thing following you and the game can't let you fucking go without you rolling your joystick 10 times in a row in the ice cavern or something
At that point I was thinking "oh yeah my controler is definitely going to have drift now
The game was just too long, re4 is a really long game too, but I wasn't bored playing it. Facing the same boss over and over, too much boss, qte etc
And the skill tree is such a bad idea. I don't like it, it's too much farm for almost nothing since you don't really see any improvement. And it's limited, like yeah you bought 3 thing and never touch it again everything else is useless
And lastly, I think a remake would be okay there are really bad things that could be improved :
    - Fuse all campaign into 1, where you play events in chronological order, sometime have to chose which character you want to do so you aren't doing the same thing again (especially the biggest sponge boss i've ever seen in my life : the boss fight with chris piers jake and cherry, hated it the first time, was welcomed a few hours later with the same fight in jake campaign, thanks capcom)
    - Better UI since it sucks
    - Skill tree completely reworked
I think the game has the potential of being cooler that way since apparently the game has the best mercenary mode, I don't know I didn't test myself since the game had been a big chore to me and forced myself to finish it

The best thing about re6 is that made people realize how underrated re5 actually was, like, it gave re5 merit, also re6 Mercs is outstanding, and no joke, I've time and time thought that they made that mode a priority and then they made the story mode so the action has a little context or something

RE6 is not as hated as you may think. Hell, all the controversy and shit just gets it a 70% on average from user votes.
I've played the game, and even though there are a couple of flaws, I still quite enjoyed it. Besides, Leon and Ada's campaigns are the closest to that Resident Evil atmosphere as you can get.
It's OK to love a game despite its flaws. There are plenty of games I love that have major problems to them (such as Final Fight Streetwise, yes I am guilty as charged for loving it). Hell, a lot of games people love have problems to them. For example, Starcraft was loaded with dozens of glitches that caused the game to freeze (try having an SCV repair a unit that’s going into a dropship). Also, Soul Calibur 4 doesn't count sword slashes that go through heads as a hit.
Part of being a gamer is realising that you can enjoy games based on their merits alone, and that just because a game didn't live up to the hype doesn't mean it's not fun.
Besides, if the Resident Evil franchise did nothing but carry on sticking to the old Alone in the Dark-esque gameplay engine with no improvements instead of switching over to the over-the-shoulder third-person shooter formula, Capcom would've been slagged off for not moving on anyway.
You know, you just can't win them all every time, and I get the feeling that gamers have high standards, sometimes *WAY TOO HIGH* for their favourite franchises to meet.
    Just saying.

RE6 is one of those games in series fans like to forget. The fact on how Capcom is now, hell, they're even rewarding their employees with pay increases, proves how much they've turned things around for themselves. RE6 is really just a product of how misguided Capcom was in the early 2010s. Great video J, looking forward to next week's one.

Yeah its got stupid in it, but in my opinion the character controls so much better, I never got used to RE4 and 5s clunkiness,
I didn't really care too much about it not being a survival horror game cause at the time I didn't play too many action games, I really liked the atmosphere of this game in a weird way.

At one point I was begging for the game to slow down so I could try and appreciate the spooky atmosphere without cars exploding everywhere. The RE movies were popular at the time and I bet they played a part in the games devolving into action schlock as well.
