Kat and Dante reacting to Vergil casually being like "I'm gonna take over the world now" like he just let out an awkward fart will never not make me laugh.
Biggest source of vitrol for this game was the lead developer Tameen Antoniades. He got a real big head over Capcom asking his company to develop a western style Devil May Cry game and was such a bell end (not sure if I used that term right) that most stories about DmC Dante being "better" than Original Recipe originated from him in some form or fashion. Being so far removed from those comments and that marketing campaign has only helped in the eyes of fans. Oh and the other thing was, Dante's redesign made him look almost exactly like Antoniades, which made a lot of his statements feel very Self-Insert fanfiction character-esque.
To this day, I still doubt the statement made when they get accused of "Dante is a self-insert of this dude in your dev team", by saying that wasn't unintentional. The similarities are way too many for it to be coincidental.
To be fair. Initially, Ninja Theory made faithful designs of Dante but were pushed by Capcom to deviate to do their own thing, including Itsuno, from what I heard. Until the teaser came out. After that point, Capcom and NT had to bulk up Donte and remove his chain smoking that was present in the teaser. And I think NT's jabs, including the "not in a million years," seem to me like NT was mad they were doing what fans wanted at first, but Capcom pushed them to do their own thing. But when they got backlash, they must've been thinking, "Dude, we were gonna do what they wanted, but Capcom told us to deviate, this could've been avoided." And had no other means to push back without making their bosses (Capcom) mad. I'm not really excusing it, as I also dislike the reboot's aesthetic and story. Their behavior towards the fans and the original games were unwarranted.
@@JRGomez81 much like Sonic Boom, handing a Japanese franchise to a western developer in search of better sales doesn't usually work. Also with me drawing comparisons with DmC and Boom, I remember it being said during DmC's development cycle, and the interviews that happened during this period, that... Unlike Japan, who design their characters to look cool for the sake of looking cool, what with extra zippers and cowboy hats. We in the West, however, are practitioners in practicality The West "throw more sports tape on Sonic and his friends! Even wrap their shoes in the stuff!"
DmC is a mediocre 7/10, but the issue was that the game was offensive in every way imaginable. Batman-style reboot, complete disrespectful reversal of all character traits/motivations, beyond cringe dialogue, malicious spiteful developers, gaming media turning on fans to sell a bottom dollar low effort cash-in, 30fps, less content, handholding "modern" gameplay, the list really doesn't end. If games like this were successful, we wouldn't get actual AAA games like DMC1/3/4/5. DMC2 was a mistake on Capcom's part, DmC was Capcom being lazy, greedy and peak consumerist.
@@PaladinSarisyou're fucking wrong lol. You really went full contrarian on a video saying 'its not that bad actually' didn't you. Fucking grow up, it's definitely not low effort, the 30fps thing is dumb because all modern versions are 1080p 60fps, with all DLC included. The script needed improvements, I agree with that, but I don't think it's fair to weigh down what the game does well (it's gameplay, level design, animation, audio, music, voice acting and art direction) because of one dodgy element. I mean for fucks sake itsuno San and his team liked it so much they lifted several mechanics from their version of Vergil for DMC 4: SE, and he's said he'd love to make a sequel to improve it because he thinks it has potential.
The only thing two did better was showing off how strong dante can be at his peak and how little a mission like that is concerning for him. It’s why he plays around way more than any other time.
DmC Reboot had the unfortunate circumstances of being made during the "Dark Age" of Capcom. An era where Capcom & a lot of big companies would throw whatever they could to the wall to see what would stick. DmC is decent for what it is but as reboot, it's a failure there. Just another mid 2010s game that languishes in obscurity, much like Sly 4 or Ratchet & Clank (2016).
If this was part of the real DMC universe and Donte was like a Secret Brother of Dante and Virgil or hell even Dante Son I won't be mad at the game cause at least the Original Dante and Virgil is still around
My belief for this game is the same as for Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. Game would be more loved if it were an original IP or not tied to the IP it’s associated with.
Yeah this isn’t Dante. If it was a new character people probably would have been fine with it. But as a reboot no, just no. People want classic Dante, not this.
@@SilverHairedFreak25judging by how the development went that's probably what ninja theory wanted, they wanted to make their own take on DMC 3 era Dante but were forced by capcom to deviate. I don't entirely blame ninja theory for how the game ended up being like, they probably buckled under the weight of expectation and misguided corporate ambitions.
the “gay cowboy” thing was a misunderstanding - it was a joke about Capcom wanting a more “western” take on Dante, thus photoshop him into brokeback mountain with cowboys, because western
J does that a lot when he includes his signature moral grandstand section against developers or animators in his videos. Usually, just skip those parts.
@@BlueInfinity22 i mean, i don't totally blame him, the gay cowboy thing gets thrown around a lot in discussions/reviews/retrospectives on this game and everyone's kind of accepted it as fact even though it isn't true
I think a snarky dante could've worked. Especially with tim phillips voice. Its just that the line weren't very creative and reliee heavily on swearing. I like the scene where he knocks the can out of a mans hand and replies with "it'll kill you" as it literally will kill the man, but not becuase of the high sugar content. Buts thats about as deep as the jokes get
@@benjoman8252 Dante is snarky in nearly every version of him. It’s one of his core character traits ppl love about him so i don’t get your first sentence. They’re far better lines that in the game. “Breaking news Bob! You’re fired!” (To Mundus spawn) “Now that is a face only a mother could love.” “I think you’re all mixed up” (after sending succubus into a fan to get split apart) The lines are dumb but funny and some do rely a bit more on swearing but it makes sense for this angrier and punkier version of dante. It’s not like og dante had very man actually “clever” one liners. I mean this is the same guy who said looking at arkham was like “staring into a backed up toilet”.
Ive always said that in the security guard scene, had dante actually wrote down his name on the list instead of FUCK YOU it wouldve made for a better scene
that pre-release GDC lecture was so tone-deaf it boggles the mind. Who in their right mind thinks the right way to approach a reboot of a popular series is to call the old version "cringe" and erase everything people like about it? DMC being campy and anime wasn't a hinderance, it's a core part of the series identity
This is also where a lot of misinformation lies and the haters hyped up their own bias and narrative. If anybody in the DMC fandom even bothers to ACTUALLY listen and see Talexi's GDC presentation, the haters will realize just how chronically online these haters were since 2011.
Can't say whether they called it "cringe" or not but what I can say is that it sounds like they wanted to change the world of Devil May Cry to suit THEIR vision. But because the fans enjoyed the more campy elements of the original games, it backfired. I will say though, that scene with the mop on dmc Dante's head and he says, "not in a million years" is pretty pathetic. If you need to put down someone else to uplift yourself, you are a very insecure person.
@@MaximumPayine Isn't the point of a reboot is to have a NEW DIFFERENT world anyway? Like I know we all can disagree whether or not the white wig flying to his head is supposed disrespect to the haters, or Ninja Theory is saying this Dante is a reboot/different version and cannot be that same old version. But the very reason, in the first place, that came from Capcom is that they want a brand new continuity, hence the reboot that was put in charge on Ninja Theory. I can't believe that you haters still don't have the actual info about this. It's been clear for years Ninja Theory even thought they were gonna collaborate for a sequel. But that was not Capcom's intention.
@@audrey9able The point of a Reboot is take the old formula and put a brand new spin on it for a fresher experience. What NT did was spit on the existing fanbase and told them they had a better idea of what a dmc should be and made a game that looked similar to dmc but played like a generic action game. You know why Ninja Theory know they made a blunder? Because they released the Definitive edition that changed the awful color coded gameplay mechanic and added a turbo because the gameplay is too slow. Also giving lock on back because the fans were whining or whatever. But hey it actually made the game playable.
@@teamsabre4 I keep hearing the whole "Ninja Theory spat on the fanbase" argument for more than a decade now but every time I look at the interviews, it's the reactions from haters that are so.... irrational and have stretched the truth. And worst of all is the fact that huge platforms from these TH-camrs have to be the "voice" for this game, when so much of their info is also heavily biased and debunkable. Guess they need that money badly to peddle the same echo chamber info from the narrow minded snobs from forums in 2011. I have never been convinced, and I definitely don't need this video to prove anything I already know more than a hater could even try. Ninja Theory did as they were told: They "took the old formula and put a brand new spin on it" as you put it, from DAY ONE. The first look was on September 15, 2010 when they released that video on TH-cam and even earlier in the fall press conference. The vitriol from the fans has been ever present and resulted in death threats against them, and the weirdest and most hateful tantrums across online spaces. The whole hateful parade definitely came from these entitled hateful "fans" and overhyped their own voices. It's so awful and toxic what you people did, even among curious and not so hateful fans who just want to enjoy Devil May Cry. But elitist snobs have to gatekeep even a game they hate. And the culmination of all your behavior and ignorance on nuance and facts, is still so rampant across the internet and even on public spaces sometimes. Ew🤢
With the comment saying about DmC Dante is not Batman, I suppose I kinda agree, given that had DmC Dante had a bit more muscle on him, he wouldn't look out of place among the filthy looking, vest wearing thugs you'd be fighting in Arkham City.
2:10 I just think it's interesting how they're marketing for this game was that the "new" dante they created was a generic emo looking edgelord And much better than the old "gay" dante
"Stop it, get some help..." You must be on something strong... Dante being a gay cowboy has always been just a joke and, iirc, comes from a developer... ...that said, please leave Devil May Cry alone: there's no need for diversity and inclusion in everything or else someone will be always excluded.
it can't be overstated just how much the remaster improved dmc:dmc. the big hate for it was from the original release that was ass, and it never got the reputation wash because no one wanted to look at the remaster lol
Vergil being weak in the reboot is the point. It’s supposed to be a build up to why he wants more power. He didn’t realize how weak he was until his defeat to dante, then in vergil’s downfall he realizes his weakness and aims to gain more power in order to achieve his goal of “protecting humanity” in his own twisted way. It’s not trying to replicate what 3 did at the end because it’s telling a different story and aiming more to explain why vergil would become so power hungry instead of leaving ambiguous like dmc 3 did.
I don’t think it’s necessarily ambiguous of why vergil wanted so much power in 3. He even says the line in the first fight “without power you cannot protect anything”, paired with him taking the mothers amulet. I guess it’s made more clear in dmc 5 but I always thought it was pretty clear that his lust for power originated from him not being able to protect their mother when the demons killed her and then it just became warped and distorted as he got older
@@RomanCzachor Well in 5 we learn that his motivation was actually because he thought he was abandoned by his mother not that he felt he couldn’t protect her. See how 3’s way of portraying vergil left a lot to be desired? It made people think Vergil’s motivation was the failure to protect his mother when it was actually he thought he was left behind by her.
@@Me-jf2oo Yeah this was always my problem with people defending the original DMC series, between 1-4 we got such a bare bones story we didn't really get much and too much was left either A) Up in the air or B) Up to interpretation which didn't get ANY follow through until DMC5, which wasn't even originally going to happen, so if we cut of DMC at 4, we know that Dante is wacky woo-hoo pizza man and avenged his father in the first game (his story is now done) Trish is his not-mom and that's it. Lady is above human, and near low-demon level in feats with daddy issues. Vergil wants power and comes off as cool, and Nero wants power to protect people. That's all we know about any of these characters with a minimum of 2 appearances for most of them, as I'm not counting DMC4SE, cause all that confirmed is Vergil fucked. Dante doesn't give any fucks about anything really still by DMC4, Trish is still Trish, Lady is still Lady, and Nero is related to Dante. In DmC we got more out of Dante, Vergil and even Kat in 1 game than Dante did in all 4 of his original games. While none of it is innovative or special, I know what DmC Dante wants more than DMC Dante at the time of DmC's release. It's an honestly better story, and I find it funny that the white long hair joke is something that's full circle of Mission 1 saying "Not in a million years" and Mission 20 with a full head of white hair permanently. Less of a clap at fans and more foreshadowing had people played the game beyond the demo
@@RomanCzachor It is 100% ambiguous. This is fact. You can interpret the scene however you want but prior to DMC5, Vergil's motivations for gaining power were entirely non-existent.
Not only did they add new cutscenes they also changed some of the older ones. For example the scene with Lilith and Mundas talking in the beginning of the game was shortened (probably because the original scene was in bad taste) and the ending scene once you complete the game was changed from Dante staring at the camera going DT to him walking away with Kat and playfully grabbing her rear before credits rolled. Also the reason why the game never made it to PC was because many of the games features and quality of life improvements were based on Mods in the Vanilla PC Version the only thing that is locked to the Definitive Edition is Vergil’s Bloody Palace I believe and also the relocation of collectibles.
@@icravedeath.1200 The initial balances yes. Like How Angelic and Demonic enemies worked on color demons was a mod for example but anything else with additional patches was the Devs. The witch, and Dream Runner had rebalancing even after the game launched among other things.
Been a huge DMC fan since 2005. I really like DmC when it came out in 2012, and the remaster was well worth the money. I think its pretty cool that DmC brought Nero's Devil Bringer play style from DMC4 and DMC 5 evolved from there. Honesty the masterpiece that is DMC5 is a refined mix of playstyles from 3, 4, and reboot.
You know the story would have been fine if Capcom wasn't on their " Let's westernize all our classic video game ips", I know people like to hate on Team ninja theory, but they were trying their best, but Capcom keep stopping them hell tnt had concept art of D.I.N.O(dante in name only) that looked like dante drom the earlier games. But yea Capcom really kept hindering Team ninja theory.
Over the years it became a meme to hate on this game, but at the beginning it was 100% justified. The original released capped the frame rate at 30fps, which is a big no-no for action based games. It had a dumb gimmick which demanded specific weapons for specific enemies all the time, which severely reduced player creativity for combos during combat *(you know, one of DMC's main aspects was always the freedom during combat).* The worst of it all was the devs, mainly the higher ups of the project. Saying old Dante was dumb, comparing his looks and outfit in DMC4 to a "Lame Gay Cowboy" *(like, wtf is their point?)* and literally, calling longtime fans ret@rds for not instantly bowing down to their ideas and concepts. The devs 100% believed they could ignore the core fanbase and find a new one without any problems. Same thing happened with the new Saints Row, difference is, Ninja Theory survived their colossal clusterf*ck... Volition, Inc. got dismantled and the Saints Row franchise was sent to the shadow realm 😂
This was my first DMC game and I absolutely loved. I then got into the series and was super surprised that it was so hated. I understand why now, but it will always have a place in my heart tbh
The Definitive Edition was evidence of Ninja Theory both learning about how to improve the combat (which was AWFUL in vanilla) and listening to fan feedback. Also DMCV took multiple ideas from this and brought them to the main series, which means that they actually had good ideas both story and gameplay wise. Really makes you wonder what a sequel could look like. (I kinda hope for something dumb like since everyone complained about it being not like the japanese games it takes place in japan but doesn't alter it's aesthetics)
@@XELNAGATYLER Trust me, I've played some absolute bangers but just because a game isn't a solid 0/10 doesn't mean it's not bad. The broken auto-targeting is reason enough to condemn that game
@@patientnr.0409 I'm with Xelan here. I've played through vanilla on PS3 and I got used to the auto targeting. Even beat its bloody palace in vanilla. Combat wasn't awful. I'd say it flowed well.
I really enjoyed this game. Yeah, it was different but it was still fun, and I appreciated what they were trying to do. My favorite part was, I've played the whole series, so I know exactly who Vergil is. I went into this story KNOWING he was going to betray you, and yet I was still blown away with how he did it. "Now we can rule them" was not what I was expecting, and I thought it was interesting
What do you mean? I like the game but vergil actual plans being revealed wasn't anything special or well done imo. Like u said. He literally just says it out loud after defeating mundus. How is that interesting?
@icravedeath.1200 he's been a acting crazy a whole tho. It shouldn't be a surprise for anyone. Abandoning the human girl multiple times and headshott8ng the baby nd mom. Not to mention the demon with the eye even asks dante "if mindus is gone then who will take his place?" It should have been obvious to dante but no big deal. Story in smc games is always weak
It is a decently designed game but the mocking tone it approaches the original series with and the tryhard edginess of the setting is just impossible to overlook.
@@MaximumPayine you kinda just answered ur own question dude. Not hard to see why it's enjoyable for most people, including myself, especially when you look past the horniness and it's basically DMC but female
The thing is with this game is if it wasnt a DMC Reboot and was its own thing with and they called the characters different to Vergil and Dante it would have gone over quite well and may have gotten a sequel or started off another franchise because the combat and gameplay are great
To this day I headcanon it as a prequel where Dante is in his late teens or early 20s, going through a phase he probably wouldn't talk about in a million years, and dyed his hair black
perfect timing, i love watching modern videos on this game that aren’t just people’s kneejerk reactions from when it originally came out hating on it (not just because i like the game but that also gets boring)
Unfortunately the improved gameplay of the remaster doesn't make up for the shade Ninja Theory threw at the original series since they think their ideas are superior rather than appreciating the original and trying to be faithful to it. Instead we got the atrocious story and characters of DmC all while throwing shade at the original. There's a reason why Capcom was struggling under Inafune's leadership during his era of chasing the Western market instead of just making games people would like to play. Inafune is also why we even got DmC over DMC5 as well as the many bad reboots and uncreative games while he chased the Western market over just letting the JPN game devs make games they want to make.
@@EinSilverRose It was a different time, they were a small studio thrown into the limelight and immediately receiving universal hate all over the internet. I don’t like the things they said but it’s clear they matured and they genuinely listened to fans with the DE will still keeping the vision of what they wanted for DmC still the same. I mean even itsuno said it’s his “favorite game” in the series and even wanted to make DmC 2 before making 5 so i think you should let that bias go and just enjoy the game.
So, here we are, just one decade later... I'll just leave this excerpt from my own review in 2019: But, you know what the most shocking thing is, after everything I've said? The reboot isn't a bad game. Aside from the petulant tone and childish presentation, it's got good art direction, mediocre combat and a few interesting ideas scattered here and there. Ninja Theory certainly captured the pathetic, whingeing culture of Gen Z and late Millennials well enough. Maybe in a few decades, we'll be hearing about how this game was the Brave New World of its time - a misunderstood masterpiece of the ages. Hopefully, I'll be dead.
This one is actually my favorite. It’s a pretty good prequel. No one gave it a chance. The combat system is super fluid and the instant turbo mode from the beginning makes it really fun. DMC5 on PC doesn’t have that option and it feels like molasses in comparison. If he had white hair from the beginning people probably wouldn’t have complained.
DMC: Devil may cry's combat and gameplay was awesome. The music fitted the tone and gameplay, the same way the original did. The story as a concept had potential. In a nutshell game was basically; good ideas with somewhat bad execution in A LOT of aspects. But it's a bit comical that Hideaki Itsuno wanted a sequel to DmC before he went ahead on DMC 5. So to him this game was something he acknowledged and respected. Since he'd have a lot of knods to it in having recolours for dante paying homage to reboot DANTE. It's a very controversial game in the series but influenced a lot of core gameplay aspects for DMC V. A lot of mechanics and ideas were taken from DmC reboot and fine tuned perfectly into the og Dmc forumla for 5. So in a weird way, this game did pave the way for the Smoking Sick Style that is DMC 5.
Try-Hard. This game's story and presentation absolutely exudes try-hard energy. They vaguely know what they're trying to do, but they have no actual ability to execute it. So their vaulting ambition makes the most childish "adult" dialog possible. This is "coolness" as written by the least cool person imaginable. It is edgelord, as written by someone who neither has an edge nor lords over anything. This is the "how do you do, fellow kids?" meme, but stretched out over an entire game's story.
I wish I had more to add to make this comment more than just a naked attempt to add more algorithmic weight to it, but that just about sums it up. A game that goes SO HARD in trying to seem deep and hardcore that it just ends up falling flat. They revved up for a triple flip and overshot the jump hard. No more than that, no less.
@@bobmclovinelectricboogaloo Most people praise the game’s art direction and soundtrack really. Besides despite the story, there’s slme real style with the game that shows the devs are pretty talented when it comes to aesthetics. Like the bob barbas boss, or the blueprint aesthetic in mission 16, or limbo in general.
The gay cowboy thing is likely a misunderstanding. The man (Talexi) was asked by Capcom to “picture Dante in a western setting” The slideshow is to depict his creative process for the prompt that Capcom gave him. When he brings up the brokeback mountain image, he says what Capcom has asked of him and then says “well- not that kind of western” meaning “not cowboys.” He then shows Dante (the same DMC4 pic) with the Fight Club characters and says “that’s better” The western comparison isn’t between new Dante and old Dante. It’s between our idea of a western- cowboys or Hollywood style. The comparison later where he tries to rejustify “cool” and compare new from old is a later/ different segment in his presentation. Regardless of your thoughts on that- I don’t think it was intentionally directed at LGBT+ people at all. I didn’t know the Batman director was gay- and Talexi probably didnt either. Using very straightforward and even exaggerated communication through these Google images reminds me of what I’d see during college in my illustration classes from my instructors. (A lot of them used projectors) Talexi is the artist who did the character design and concept art for the game. And he’s been asked to justify a decision that Capcom made in pushing the series more western by using visual examples. I don’t think this was meant to be malicious or a “gay joke” at all. Dante existing in a picture with gay cowboys doesn’t inherently mean they are calling Dante gay. DMC4 Dante is the controlled variable in the western comparison. Nice vid tho I’m glad you revisited the game.
i mean, Dante would also look off in a screenshot of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, so why did they picked off Brokeback Mountain, if the joke was only about cowboys? Same thing with Batman & Robin, it may not be so much about the director himself, but that movie always had the reputation of looking "gay". I like DMC Reboot's style and i get he wanted to talk about how they wanted to make it edgy and broodier and western, but that presentation is pretty obviously rather tasteless, both in how talked down on the original games style and how much it riffs on it for being "gay"
@@hassanchapa6529 My point is that can only be assumed. Dante being in a picture with gay cowboys still doesn’t inherently mean the intention was to be malicious. That can only be interpreted. At no point was anything mentioned about Batman’s director. He’s also Batman- a very famous character. And Batman and Robin is a famously campy movie. You can assume that it was malicious intent but only that. Never anywhere did Talexi outright make a gay joke or explicitly attribute Dante to gayness.
I still remember my younger self that was playing DMC for the first time and was amazed by how "cool" and "rebel" this Dante act. Today, 4 years after, I dont know who deserve the most shame, me or the character
As a side note, I really enjoy hearing you talk about how you used to be basically a dumb teenager desperate to fit in with what the internet said about some games and how you outgrew it. I can definitely relate.
Honestly it has some of the best gameplay in the series. And 5 took a lot of influence from a mechanical standpoint (platforming mainly). Its surprisingly one of my sister's favourite games. The emo skin is both our favourites Still the only game where we had an original campaign for Virgil and not just redoing the main campaign
I've rarely been one tied to a lot new release promotions and press conferences. I'm good with an upcoming release trailer and waiting for the game itself to avoid both spoilers and overhype. I understood why the game got some hate, I was never on the hate train itself and was fine with a different take on the character and universe. I really liked the Vergil DLC and seeing him begin to fall more in line with the type of character people thought of when they usually see Vergil. I feel like Dante would have been similar. It was more of his first introduction to who and what he his as, yes, an angsty teen, but I think a follow-up would have changed his outlook and personality a bit just like any other teen as they grow up and have life experiences. I think if the game hadn't been so hated that it would have made for an interesting series alongside the original with maybe one or two more games as sequels.
when i was a child playing this game, and saw how dante’s hair became white at the end of the game and he didn’t have a devil trigger, i remembered that line from dmc 3: ‘it’s been nearly a year since we last met’ and from that moment i thought that dmc devil may cry is a prequel to dmc 3, i was so wrong
Honestly if you change the name of the characters, make it more like spin-off instead of a reboot, then it wouldn't have gotten the backlash that it did.
Pretty sure everyone is already aware that the game functionally works, but no one cares because of the devs attitude to the fans. There are also moments where the story feels like it's got its own head stuck up its ass.
The gameplay and soundtrack is why I keep coming back to this game every once in awhile, having fun with its stellar and engaging combat styles that you can switch between during combos was always so satisfying
It’s kind of funny because this actually was the game that introduced me to devil may cry. And since it was a standalone game I was more willing to try it than to start from the beginning to understand the series. I can see why veteran players don’t like it but I’ll always love that it’s what showed me this series at all
Ok, a bit of fan-fiction writing here, but...: A way they could have made Vergil a threat is build up how he's secretly the leader of the Dreamrunners that hound Dante halfway through the game. He already had a mask that looked similar to theirs, so why not go full bore with that and have Vergil be slowly chipping away at Dante, trying to find his weaknesses in fight-after-fight, while Dante is working his way up to getting stronger with his angel and devil sides. Then, when the final fight with Vergil happens, have Vergil go "Shame, that." and knock Dante through a building or something to show off his true strength, while slowly turning into his Dreamrunner form. "It was you?!" Dante goes, shocked, but pissed off, clearly. "The whole time, brother..." Vergil goes. Then we get a fight, where the two go toe to toe, with Vergil first in the lead, while Dante now has to learn how to turn things around on him. Have people see Dante fight and against this guy in a demon mask! Give them an audience, while Kat is trying to desperately catch up to them. Have Vergil be the one stabbing Dante to the ground. "You should have joined me. I loved you, brother..." Vergil goes. "Yeah, fuck you!" Dante coughs, then grins, confusing Vergil, until Kat hits him with a car from the side, giving Dante the chance to get up and take the final round of the fight. We get the ending scene, but this time it's recontextualized that Dante needed help to win, so he has plenty of room to grow from here.
@@Burori1 Vergil isn’t meant to be a big threat in the game he is meant to be weak so we can follow his journey to becoming so who could be driven mad with lust for power. Also personally not trying to shit on you or anything (genuinely) but i don’t like that “leader of dreamrunners” idea.
Despite how bad a game is said to be, it's okay to look at it to see if you like it or not. DmC, Zelda ll, the original Final Fantasy 2, Mega Man X6, etc.; these are games that come to mind when I think of controversial games I were scared to get into and ended up enjoying.

Personally as far as I can say in regards to reboots, I'm up for different interpretations of a character or story so long as the interpretation in the reboot is good, writing and story-wise I have to agree with J however that DmC is not good. Though like J did recently I did find myself enjoying the gameplay (I bought the game some time after DMC5 came out), particularly in Definitive Edition which is the only way one should play it whether they own a PlayStation or XBox. I don't think DmC DE is one of the best action games or anything like that, but I like it, and as someone who likes platformers I enjoyed the platforming movement this game offered. 9:55 - Feels a little wrong to hear someone mispronounce Osiris, which is pronounced Oh-Sai-rus, not really a big deal or anything, I'm just saying.
I played this game after I played 5 and didn't think the voice acting was bad,I thought the direction and writing wasn't the best though. I think this game game would of been more well received if this was a different cast of characters instead of rebooted versions. The real Dante is popular because of his attitude so changing that in a reboot seems like they didnt understand what worked about the series.
DmC is my favorite DMC game, so I am glad you found something to enjoy about it. The story is fine enough but the gameplay is just really stellar in my opinion. I think normal DMC combat is good, but it is not for me. It feels very clunky, it doesn't much of a standard dodge (not a negative overall, just not for me), the combos are no how I like them to be (I prefer Bayonetta style, which DmC has more of iirc), etc. And each game has gameplay stuff that I don't like. DMC1 is just not very good for replays. DMC2. I didn't even make it far in DMC3 because the Cerberus boss felt poorly designed, and then I go right into the centipede boss, so I just dropped the game. DMC4 is only half a game. DMC5 forces you to play as characters you might not like, so for me, only 1/3rd of the game is fun. DmC doesn't have any stuff like that for me. It's just an enjoyable gameplay experience. Well, except the music.
It's going to be see people defending this almost shaeksperean trainwreck. Game's a solid 3/10 rerelase as definitive edition is more of a fix but the damage was done. Only Aquilla, the bob barbas bossfight and visual concept (limbo) are pretty much the only good things in there. DmC2 by capcom/Itsuno would be actually great SPANISH MOD IS MANDATORY
Honesly, this was my first aprouch to DMC and always thought it was cool. And after playing the old games, I still can't believe I'm thr only one who things those games were cringe. Even the new one can get borring at some points
I been so obsess with this game and love the ost, wish they made another one, I even made ai songs if the game had a sequel. This Dante is my favorite Dante
Almost done with stellar blade new game plus hard mode and I just bought dmc 5 and I’m thinking of getting this one too. Man after you put in the time and learn all the combos and start getting good, the games get so good.
Dante and Vergil's dynamic in this game reminds me of Mufassa and Scar from The Lion King. The younger, evil brother isn't as physically strong as his older sibling but compensates by being more cunning. That can make for an interesting villain but there's a reason The Lion King didn't climax in a fight between Scar and Mufassa. If Vergil's strategic mindset were implemented in the final fight in some way, I think it would have been better. Though if the guy I compared him to is any indication, Vergil would have likely been an even worse ruler than Mundus largely due to incompetence.
I always considered the world building in DmC the best one in all the series. Demons being part of this secret paralel underworld that affects the real world always seemed super cool to me. Plus it makes more sense than Dante being constantly broke if he's the descendent of Devil Jesus and the best devil hunter in the world, when devils are destroying entire cities. In real life dude would probably be paid an entire USA GDP percentage and have a super jet ready at all times to ferry him to any devil hotspot that appears in the world. You can't have devils destroy two or three entire cities in 20 years or so, and not expect the world to go crazy.
This was actually the first Devil May Cry game I played. Got it around 2014 or 2015 when I got my PS3 (I had just gotten my first job and GameStop had insane deals to try and clear out their PS3 stocks basically every week) and really enjoyed it. I remember really enjoying the combat and didn't dislike this version of Dante anywhere near as much as other people most likely cause I didn't have any experience with the series. I did eventually pick up a PS2 copy of the first game and gave it a try, but didn't make it far before just finding it boring. Wasn't till last year when I decided to give 5 a try that I really got into the series.
At least this game had an actual separate Vergil campaign. I like playing as Vergil in the other games but it was always disappointing that Vergil never had his own campaign in the other games.
DmC was my first DMC experience and I never considered it to be as bad as people thought it was until I played DMC5 when that released and worked my way backwards. Since then, I view this game as a guilty pleasure where it's not as bad as people make it out to be, but it's not what DMC really was all about from a character point of view.
DmC DE is probably the best combat wise with DMC5 tied close to it. The flawless swap between weapons feels amazing. The story, while pretty basic, I think the Dante and Vergil story works, in that instead of being pitted against each other from the beginning, they're allies, and lead to a quick, unwanted fallout, which would've been nice to explore post DLC, seeing Vergil come back as the big bad, having gotten stronger with his psyche broken
The anime had a great soundtrack, but the fact that it was developed by the same folks who developed DMC2 did it no favors. Also the fact that anime Dante was a lot less... animated... than MoCap Rueben Langdon was a strike against it.
My objective analysis of the combat at the time is that it was just shallow and the later weapons were just upgrades of the previous ones. Never played the definitive edition, but I still wish there was something else done with them cause the idea of having them so easily selectable is still pretty interesting.
16:30 So I so very and clearly remember the "argument" between Dante and the succubus- but I did not remember, at all, that the demon was called a succubus, nor that it was the one creating the drink that was enslaving humanity. It's wild that J said this as an off hand comment, but when I saw this video to click on it, that exchange, and that exchange alone, was what immediately came to my mind because DmC was mentioned. I don't remember its story at all, nor any of its cutscenes, just this swearing match between Dante and the succubus, lmfao.
I always liked this game had no idea why then I looked into it and I was like, ok I get why it’s hated now, but I thought the combat was really damn cool so I still like it in my book
I haven't played more than the demo, and I will be honest. I still roll my eyes at the perceptions that fhis version of Dante is better than the original. How knowing some of the mechanics were broughr over from this to five does intrigue me. This game isn’t on my top tier to play play, but I might check it out one day.
Within the context of this channel, comparing DmC Donté to DMC4 Dante is like contrasting Surge The Tenrec with Sonic The Hedgehog... ...Vibes of Industrial Rock, Punk of a character, and a bast****** of a Tainted Coil child who was hated because he "Wasn't DANTE THE SPARDA" It's unique interpretation of Dante, but both can co-exist as their own thing, with how **unlikely** they are... Even worse, his black/brown hair is NOT even natural, his natural color being white hair. This guy is actively avoiding to become Dante, before ...well.... This game feels like a prequel to non-existing sequel, because he doesn't get his white hair visible UNTIL THE END ITSELF Why Tainted Coil reference? Because the most accurate song that fits both Donté & Surge is _Free Your Hate_ by KMFDM
My thoughts about it is, it isn't a bad game. Just not a good dmc game. Great combat, terrible characters that share the same names as the greater original characters.
I am so glad that you put this review out. I always thought this game was over-hated The combat was super tight and the story - in a nutshell - really wasn't *_bad_* it's more so that fans were already in love with the former Dante and so trying to make a stark character change the way they did left fans with a sour taste in their mouth I personally think that this game was really good on its own and was merely a product of the later half of the *Xtreme Era* (Think, games with insanely zany dialogue like 'Bulletstorm') but I personally feel there was tons of charm to games like these, even though yes - both Dante and Virgil overdid it in this game by a long shot
It's one of those games that really should have had a different title and the characters that didn't share the same names as the ones in the original series. Ultimately a lot of people don't like their favorite characters being messed with and honestly that's fair.
@@bobmclovinelectricboogaloo I don't agree with the characters part but I agree with the game's title, DMC Devil May Cry was a terrible name Especially since it was very apparent that they were trying to soft-reboot the franchise
I was probably the only person I knew who gave this game a shot when it came out and actually enjoyed it. Story and all, I actually liked this game and even now I do like this take on Dante and wish it could’ve been explored more if not introduced in such an arrogant way. I should also point out that I was 13 when this came out and had little interaction with the DMC franchise outside of Marvel vs Capcom which is probably why I was perfectly fine with this take on Dante. Now that I’m older I still like this game and the whole concept it was going for; heck even still like the design of the new Dante but after playing DMC 5, 4, and 3 it is VERY clear that there’s little to no connection with this game to the original and these characters are separate in all regards save for names and some personality traits
Despite the hate many put in the internet I greatly enjoyed the game. The story could have worked as a prequel even farther than dmc3 if you changed some things. -Remove the angel stuff. -Vergil either be an impostor or another character like the drmon brothers that appear inbthe anime. -Mundus being another powerful demon. While the main games I feel exeed on the character story the main plot is simple, kill a powerful demon. I like how in this Mundus basacly controls all, the characters storyvreally lacks. Limbo itself si a really interesting concept. How the game takes place in a twisted version of the real world. If I could give a bug critique would be the control. I wont say it's bad but if you recently play one of the main games ut will take a while to get used to this one or vice versa.
From the get-go, I quite liked this game. Even though I had only previously played DMC3, and therefore have a good idea of Dante and Vergil's personalities, I did not have that attachment to their characters and therefore was very open to alternative portrayals of the two. In fact, I quite liked (or at least, didn't mind) the alternative universe of DMC. The game basically conveyed the soul of DMC quite well in my opinion. The combat was great, the setting was sufficiently gothic at times, the boss fights like against the news guy was awesome and more importantly, Dante still at his core, retained his faith in humanity just like the OG counterpart. I know I'm the minority here, but I really did like the alternate take on Dante.
interresting how tastes can be so different. I haven't played the definitive edition, actually I didn't even know it existed, but 2 things that annoyed me the most were the demon/angel weapons and Limbo. The R2 L2 stuff sounds good on paper, but it made the game feel unnecessarily hasty and stressful. The idea of Limbo as an alternate reality where all the battles happen was just horrible for me, it felt so out of place. My general feeling was, they tried everything to make DMC as different as they could from the main series. I tried to give it a fair chance but after about 10 hours I dropped and forgot it
Kat and Dante reacting to Vergil casually being like "I'm gonna take over the world now" like he just let out an awkward fart will never not make me laugh.
British person here, you used bell end correctly, congratulations.
To this day, I still doubt the statement made when they get accused of "Dante is a self-insert of this dude in your dev team", by saying that wasn't unintentional. The similarities are way too many for it to be coincidental.
@@hanayasethI think that could be more of a criticism towards how the Dante was designed too generic.
We in the West, however, are practitioners in practicality
The West "throw more sports tape on Sonic and his friends! Even wrap their shoes in the stuff!"
I always hated when people would say DMC2 was better than reboot... like no, its not
DmC is a mediocre 7/10, but the issue was that the game was offensive in every way imaginable.
If they say that they never play DMC 2 for sure

Whether we love or hate DMC, can we all agree that the score announcer was “SENSATIONAL!”
It should've been marketed as a western made spinoff and not a reboot.
If this was part of the real DMC universe and Donte was like a Secret Brother of Dante and Virgil or hell even Dante Son I won't be mad at the game cause at least the Original Dante and Virgil is still around

Yes! Perfect way to say it. It's good on it's own like how people liked Dante's Inferno.
Yeah this isn’t Dante. If it was a new character people probably would have been fine with it. But as a reboot no, just no. People want classic Dante, not this.
If they filed the serial numbers off via a soft reboot it could stand side-by-side with the _actual_ Devil May Cry

@@benjoman8252 Dante is snarky in nearly every version of him. It’s one of his core character traits ppl love about him so i don’t get your first sentence.
They’re far better lines that in the game.
“Breaking news Bob! You’re fired!”
(To Mundus spawn) “Now that is a face only a mother could love.”
“I think you’re all mixed up” (after sending succubus into a fan to get split apart)
The lines are dumb but funny and some do rely a bit more on swearing but it makes sense for this angrier and punkier version of dante.

@@Me-jf2oooh shit true, you are correct. Damn I kinda liked my interpretation in 3 more than the actual reason in 5
@@RomanCzachor It is 100% ambiguous.
Were the balancing improvements mods too?

It was a meme to hate this game.
I'm a fan of both, and can understand that this was a separate universe.
Over the years it became a meme to hate on this game, but at the beginning it was 100% justified.
The original released capped the frame rate at 30fps, which is a big no-no for action based games. It had a dumb gimmick which demanded specific weapons for specific enemies all the time, which severely reduced player creativity for combos during combat *(you know, one of DMC's main aspects was always the freedom during combat).*
The worst of it all was the devs, mainly the higher ups of the project.

@@taters9722stealth dropping your true ambitions on people you've manipulated up until that point is a kinda smart idea lol.
@icravedeath.1200 he's been a acting crazy a whole tho. It shouldn't be a surprise for anyone.
Abandoning the human girl multiple times and headshott8ng the baby nd mom.
Not to mention the demon with the eye even asks dante "if mindus is gone then who will take his place?"
It should have been obvious to dante but no big deal. Story in smc games is always weak
I still cant believe ppl consider this game to be worse than DMC2
Its not my favourite either but its a solid 8/10 game imo
It is a decently designed game but the mocking tone it approaches the original series with and the tryhard edginess of the setting is just impossible to overlook.
I honestly couldn't agree more.
You should review Bayonetta series.
Should have ended at 2, though 1 fits as a neat standalone.
No clue why people like that series. Its pretty boring and the protagonist is just a glorified stripper.
I haven't watched the video yet, but as someone who grew up with all the Devil May Crys, DMC Definitive Edition is my favorite one.
They literally were trying to make it like original but capcom came and asked for it to be as different as possible
I'll just leave this excerpt from my own review in 2019:
But, you know what the most shocking thing is, after everything I've said? The reboot isn't a bad game. Aside from the petulant tone and childish presentation, it's got good art direction, mediocre combat and a few interesting ideas scattered here and there. Ninja Theory certainly captured the pathetic, whingeing culture of Gen Z and late Millennials well enough. Maybe in a few decades, we'll be hearing about how this game was the Brave New World of its time - a misunderstood masterpiece of the ages. Hopefully, I'll be dead.
I liked the game upon original release, never understood all the hate, it’s definitely better than Devil May Cry 2 and 4 🤷🏾♂️
This one is actually my favorite.
It's not a prequel it's a reboot.
So in a weird way, this game did pave the way for the Smoking Sick Style that is DMC 5.
indeed
@@GeneralBolas Eh it’s your opinion. But don’t act like the game’s art direction and music wasn’t the embodiment of cool.
@@Me-jf2oo it's kind of most people's opinion though and I got to be honest I agree with that opinion. But honestly to each their own.
How ironic that I was just watching your DMC4 review earliertoday, and then this review drops! 😅
Jeff be like, "Perhaps I treated you too harshly."
I hope someday in the future, I hope Capcom Remakes Devil May Cry 1 & 3 & 4 Games in RE Engine that be amazing
The gay cowboy thing is likely a misunderstanding. The man (Talexi) was asked by Capcom to “picture Dante in a western setting” The slideshow is to depict his creative process for the prompt that Capcom gave him. When he brings up the brokeback mountain image, he says what Capcom has asked of him and then says “well- not that kind of western” meaning “not cowboys.” He then shows Dante (the same DMC4 pic) with the Fight Club characters and says “that’s better”
The western comparison isn’t between new Dante and old Dante.
(A lot of them used projectors)
Talexi is the artist who did the character design and concept art for the game.
The emo skin is both our favourites
Still the only game where we had an original campaign for Virgil and not just redoing the main campaign
Honestly it feels like we're not allowed to talk about those problems.
It’s so funny that they literally patched out Vergil’s fedora.
DmC is not a bad game, it just sucks at being Devil May Cry
Despite how bad a game is said to be, it's okay to look at it to see if you like it or not. DmC, Zelda ll, the original Final Fantasy 2, Mega Man X6, etc.; these are games that come to mind when I think of controversial games I were scared to get into and ended up enjoying.
Not really asking for it, but would there be a possibility we see a DMC: Peak of Combat video?
Finally! I will die on this hill by myself, but I loved this entry. Sure, it wasn’t the best looking, but the mechanics put in place were really great! Hell, it was incorporated into DMC5! Thank you for covering this game!
the solid gameplay isn't enough to save this game to me i rather play any other dmc game over this one

@@JCDenton205 Nero in 5 is even worse than DmC Dante
I just noticed fake Dante has his mouth open more than not. Like a mouth breather 😅
Well, except the music.
i’ve always loved this game
me too
It's going to be see people defending this almost shaeksperean trainwreck. Game's a solid 3/10 rerelase as definitive edition is more of a fix but the damage was done.
Only Aquilla, the bob barbas bossfight and visual concept (limbo) are pretty much the only good things in there. DmC2 by capcom/Itsuno would be actually great
SPANISH MOD IS MANDATORY
Honesly, this was my first aprouch to DMC and always thought it was cool. And after playing the old games, I still can't believe I'm thr only one who things those games were cringe. Even the new one can get borring at some points
I been so obsess with this game and love the ost, wish they made another one, I even made ai songs if the game had a sequel. This Dante is my favorite Dante
Give all the characters/villains new names, retitle the game, and suddenly it becomes good.
You forgot to include that forum post in the description.
What are your thoughts on the Devil May Cry 2007 anime. Do you find Patty Lowell annoying. To me, I just find her cute.
The anime had a great soundtrack, but the fact that it was developed by the same folks who developed DMC2 did it no favors. Also the fact that anime Dante was a lot less... animated... than MoCap Rueben Langdon was a strike against it.
I bought this game at release and remember two things about it: super fun to play and visually impressive.
My objective analysis of the combat at the time is that it was just shallow and the later weapons were just upgrades of the previous ones. Never played the definitive edition, but I still wish there was something else done with them cause the idea of having them so easily selectable is still pretty interesting.
I feel vindicated. Thank you for this review.

So I so very and clearly remember the "argument" between Dante and the succubus- but I did not remember, at all, that the demon was called a succubus, nor that it was the one creating the drink that was enslaving humanity.
Music in dmc:dmc was very good
I always liked this game had no idea why then I looked into it and I was like, ok I get why it’s hated now, but I thought the combat was really damn cool so I still like it in my book
I haven't played more than the demo, and I will be honest. I still roll my eyes at the perceptions that fhis version of Dante is better than the original. How knowing some of the mechanics were broughr over from this to five does intrigue me.
This game isn’t on my top tier to play play, but I might check it out one day.
I haven’t played this game yet, but interested in playing the rest of the DMC games sometime
Within the context of this channel, comparing DmC Donté to DMC4 Dante is like contrasting Surge The Tenrec with Sonic The Hedgehog...
...Vibes of Industrial Rock, Punk of a character, and a bast****** of a Tainted Coil child who was hated because he "Wasn't DANTE THE SPARDA"
It's unique interpretation of Dante, but both can co-exist as their own thing, with how **unlikely** they are...
Even worse, his black/brown hair is NOT even natural, his natural color being white hair. This guy is actively avoiding to become Dante, before ...well....
This game feels like a prequel to non-existing sequel, because he doesn't get his white hair visible UNTIL THE END ITSELF
Why Tainted Coil reference? Because the most accurate song that fits both Donté & Surge is _Free Your Hate_ by KMFDM
My thoughts about it is, it isn't a bad game. Just not a good dmc game. Great combat, terrible characters that share the same names as the greater original characters.
I feel like a DMC character having an attitude was executed better with Nero anyways. Helps that Nero is still likable even with the attitude he has.
Also, this game and dante's overall design is closer to the matrix than it is to DMC3, but unlike Neo, his attitude was a similar to a punk.
I am so glad that you put this review out. I always thought this game was over-hated
The combat was super tight and the story - in a nutshell - really wasn't *_bad_*
it's more so that fans were already in love with the former Dante and so trying to make a stark character change the way they did left fans with a sour taste in their mouth
I personally think that this game was really good on its own and was merely a product of the later half of the *Xtreme Era*
(Think, games with insanely zany dialogue like 'Bulletstorm') but I personally feel there was tons of charm to games like these, even though yes - both Dante and Virgil overdid it in this game by a long shot
It's one of those games that really should have had a different title and the characters that didn't share the same names as the ones in the original series. Ultimately a lot of people don't like their favorite characters being messed with and honestly that's fair.
@@bobmclovinelectricboogaloo I don't agree with the characters part but I agree with the game's title, DMC Devil May Cry was a terrible name
Especially since it was very apparent that they were trying to soft-reboot the franchise
As an angsty young adult once said: " Not in a million years!"... 😏😏😏
"Wacky-woohoo-pizza-man" FTW, always. 😎🤟
Yeah it's good if you skip the cutscenes and never played devil may cry
Can’t stay AWAAAAAAAKE!!!
interresting how tastes can be so different. I tried to give it a fair chance but after about 10 hours I dropped and forgot it
Honestly I never understood the hate for it, cause it was actually cool and a reason why I started to play Devil may cry
The story may suck, but having played through it again on my Steam Deck I can say it’s a really solid action game.
It is a fine game but a bad Devil May Cry game.
Ninja Theory should have just made a new IP with the story.
Same with Bioshock Infinite.
Couldn't agree more.
Wait, but Mayo's DMC4 review isn't even out yet! How can this be happening?
I feel like this game would have been recieved well if Dante was using the DMC3 skin by default.
