It’s really common sense. More info: Regular drive you can use paddles but it’ll shift itself when you hit shift point if you go WOT. It’ll also switch back to driving itself if you don’t keep using them or just start cruising. “S” will keep it in paddle mode and not shift for you until you use the paddles. Drive mode toggle Sport+ will do the same thing “S” shifter select does but the “D” paddle effect remains. “S” shifter select is the only way to have full control with paddles. “D” will let you go up or down in gears and then go back to shifting itself after 5ish seconds of no response. The toggle select drive modes will just effect throttle response and how aggressive it downshifts and how it stays in gears. Drag mode is a different animal. Drag mode cuts off at 7th gear because that’s the 1:1 gear. It also keeps torque through the shift so it jumps out super hard compared to any other drive mode. The ideal way to “roll race” is to put it in drag mode, toggle and hold traction to turn off advanced track, leave it in “D”, down shift to desired gear and then hit it. Car takes over and you don’t have to “bump” from “S” to “D” to shift itself.
I literally found out about this by mistake. I use to drive my mustang on sport mode but never put the gear stick in sport mode itself when one day I decided to try it and oh my god the throttle response was insane. It’s like I fell in love with the car all over again. I literally gassed it down the road. Lost abit of traction because it was so so quick but my god it was fun like a proper American muscle car.
I always drive in sport mode especially around town. But when you get to the interstate, put it back to D. Speeds below 45, shift it to S mode, easy. Over 45, back to D
I just thought you knew this and was always using Sport mode during spirited driving like pulls. I forgot you didn't receive a manual, but my 300C didn't include a manual. Everything is found on my infotainment screen. Take a look. It might be on yours. It fun using the paddles, but the S mode rips the gears faster than you pull the paddles without concerns of hitting the rev limiter. When you use the regular drive setting it's going through the 10 gears. It's for highway use and provides better fuel economy around town. Sports mode changes the way it shifts automatically for performance driving while changing gears rapidly under acceleration like a machine gun. Your Mach 1 has a different programed automatic transmission than the GT. It was tuned for performance. I own a 2018 modded Chrysler 300C Hemi with an 8 speed automatic. I use "D" drive around town and on the highway to improve fuel mileage. I bracket race every weekend. I only use "S" sport mode at the track while using the sports mode setting on my dash which improves throttle response. I also use a Pedal Commander with traction control off. (I recommend doing research regarding the Pedal Commander). My sports mode only uses 6 gears instead of 8. Not sure about your 10R80. For Drag racing I found letting the transmission shift eliminated the chance of hitting the rev limiter using the paddle shifters. When I'm messing around on city streets, I use my paddle shifter. By the way. I can also use my paddle shifters when in normal "D" drive dropping a gear or more for passing or descending a steep hill. You'll have to test that on your Mach 1. In my Ford Edge ST. I normally use the 8 speed in regular drive mode on the highway and for fuel saving. I use sport for spirited driving around town. There's a huge performance difference using S Sport vs D Drive modes in both vehicles. Keep enjoying that Mach 1.
Thats exactly I wanted sometimes >> Only more responsive throttle with sports shifts without changing to sports steering, paddle shiftings, louder sporty exhausts sound, instrument cluster and dampers engaged :) …Nice and thanks!!
I know. It's beyond belief he can call himself a 'Mustang guy' yet he has never read the manual then makes a video thinking he has discovered something new PMSL Even has the nerve to suggest thousands of other people are as stupid as him! 🤣Priceless.
Been driving my 10spd for 3 years now and I have to say you're not quite right. You do not need to be in "S" for it to be "sporty". That's what you're drive modes are for, you have normal, sport + & track which you can use in "D". Untuned, "S" will become manual only once you click one of the paddles, it will donwshift for you still but will not upshift.
Exactly, you don't need to be in "S" for it to be sporty but you can't have it in "D". Don't use "D", unless you toggle into sport +, but you can't get normal dampers in sport +.
I used to have the 6 auto on my 2016GT. I found in sport it had wicked downshifts and exhaust not when applying the brake before entering a corner. With the Mach1 10 speed I just picked up I find in sport it does not have aggressive downshifts. I haven’t played with Track too often. Have you noticed the same ?
Thanks. I've been dropping into S for passing, than going back into D to cruise. Now I'll try staying in S for around down driving. That should pep things up. I just scored the 2015 GT Limited Edition, 1872/1964, with only 7K on her. What a fun car to drive.
When you’re in sport mode and you use paddle shifters it won’t switch back to automatic. If you hold down right paddle shifter for 1 second and will switch back to auto. Funny thing is, I was in the same position as uou. Drove a manual for 20 years and didn’t know lol
If I understand correctly then, if you have Magneride S doesn't change the suspension or open the active exhaust . Also if it's a base EB or GT S is the only "sport mode" available. If you have a 101A /201A or higher trim car without Magneride using the toggle switch or shifting into S is the same thing.
Great video and info, was searching to find out if there was a setting to disable the shift paddles... and still looking, so annoying you bump them and then they are kicked into motion!
Damn so you're telling me that the S mode for the trans will shift automatically for you? I got a 22 GT and only had it for a week, so this is still new to me.
I picked up a 16 F150 with the coyote and played in sport mode but I installed a cat back this weekend and holy hell does it make a difference. I commend Ford for putting an aggressive sport mode in a truck. I can only imagine it in the Mustangs, far cry from my 94 GT with an auto.🤘🏻
I drive in D, and use the S mode as a downshift button basically, yes I could paddle down but using S makes the throttle angle sharper so I get a bit more passing power. Also the real crime here is driving around in quiet mode lol.
First you do line lock get the tires hot and sticky Second you put it in S then drag mode hold on and floor it! The car should chirp 1st 2nd and 3rd gear as it shifts
Been driving the mustang we rented in drive mode uphill and downhill in Maui. Men! No wonder the engine was having a hard time. Didn’t have any idea how to drive it til I came across this video. Lol😅
From a roll I go in s and work the paddles to the right rpm. Usually around 5k. When I punch it I quickly shift to drive to let the car do the work. No traction control when I have my mickey’s and welds on. The car is not stock.
Just picked up my first mustang 3 days ago. It’s a ‘22 Vert with performance package. Didn’t know about this, so thank you! I find the transmission pull and jerk a bit more than I was hoping. Seems like it’s trying to find gears too often in the sport+ mode. I will try the stick in “S” instead of “D” and see if it calms downs the gear hunt.
I thought my 2018 gt was slow when i test drove. Then I discovered "S" and especially "S+". Yeah it's pretty quick and trans very responsiven. No "D" for me
I don't know how it is for 18+ models with the 10-spd but for the 6-speed, the transmission won't shift past 5th gear if you're in sport. You'll have to manually go to 6th with your paddles
Normal Mode = economy mode practically (SUCKS) Sport+ mode = true throttle limited only by traction control, sport steering, rpm's will not drop below ~2000pm which will result in engine breaking as you decelerate, gears will hold after aggressive throttle until you drive at a constant speed, then it will upshift. If you drive over ~60mph, 6th gear will engage because at that speed you are over 2000pm. Therefore, awesome for highway driving over 60mph, but might be too aggressive for city driving. Track mode = same in every way to Sport+ except, traction is reduced but not removed entirely. What this means is that when you perform WOT's you won't experience lag, making it more "responsive" when you do WOT's. (roll at any speed for example and WOT in Sport+ and then in Track and you'l notice an annoying lag in Sport+ and it's absence in Track). Perfect for racing
Love the videos..I have a 2021 mustang gt automatic transmission when I get on it then let off gas i notice roms seem to hang before coming down..is that normal?
People actually roll race with the transmission in Drive because it holds gears longer they would put it in S mode just to downshift then they would put it back in D
Do you hope to see a more modernized shifter in the next mustang like the ones in bmws where it’s a joystick shifter ? Or do you prefer this traditional one? I have a 2021 m340, it’s so much fun and effortless to just go up and down to change shifts
Always had a manual. Thanks for the instruction!!! My Dark Horse will be the Auto 10-speed because of the wife. I will drive it always in “S” and shift myself. Cheers. Good video‼️‼️‼️🇺🇸
I just can’t get a mustang unless it’s a stick. Need that in my life. I understand that the 10 speed auto’s can shift WAY better than I ever could, but I just like the feeling of total control when I shift thru the gears manually. Once you get used to your car and know how it reacts in different situations the control you get from a manual cannot be beat. I dunno… I just don’t think I could get an auto.
I always thought the same way as you. Until my hip went bad and I had to get an automatic stang instead of my manual stang. Always had a manual. It hurt to much to keep pushing the clutch. But now that I have an automatic I absolutely love it!
If you don’t touch the paddles or shift selection method , the transmission will shift for you. Once you hit the button or paddle to shift up or down, you’re letting the car know you’re taking over and from there you have to shift ,unless you shift back to D and back to S again.
My m3 is the same way in automatic mode it just stays in 7th gear and basically have to use 80 percent throttle for it to downshift into the lowest gear. I only drive the car in manual mode
My ‘20 shifts down regularly in D, maybe the tuning is different in the newer models, than in sport or a different mode it’s a beast and shifts like it’s on steroids!
You can be in D w/ the shifter but use the mode selector switch for sport + / track / drag & the cars acceleration & shifts change w the mode it’s in. For most performance put the shifter in S, then select Track mode / Drag mode
I have a very important question, I have a 2019 ecoboost mustang and whenever I shift even if it’s warmed up, when I shift from reverse back into drive it jerks slightly. What does that mean? I do regular maintenance on it and it just hit 50,000 but I have not don’t a transmission flush but is it just because it’s a 10 speed or is something else wrong? Please respond
Here’s where you are not totally correct! D is normal drive and in normal D you can toggle the modes that change a lot of other parameters but the S mode is not Sport it is Select Shift! So yes it will get a sporty shift pattern but if you select a gear with paddles it will hold that gear until you select another gear or hold the + paddles for 3 seconds and then it will return to auto shift in S mode but it is called Select Shift not Sport
I have a 2014 gt and in the manual it calls it sport mode in which you can use the select shift feature. Wondering what the actual verbiage is in newer guides.
The coyote is insane on top end. Keep Rpms high and let her rip. I can tell you never went full on. This is not a torque monster if you want to feel something get above 4000rpm. I have a 21 manual. Once I learned to drive it like a sports car I fell in love. The auto is more capable in the right hands.
Totally, I get it man - this car needs to be driven hard to really understand what it’s built for! The thing is, you need a race course to use it properly, the streets are too small and dangerous lol
Folks get confused about the difference. Shifting into sport will give you higher RPMs and better engine breaking and it is what you want to do when in a hilly area. You don't actually need to shift into S for any other reason because Sport+ mode also gives you higher RPMs and better engine breaking but it also changes your steering, dampers (if equipt) , active ehaust (if equipt) and tweaks the computer settings. I use Sport+ all the time, but I leave the stick in D. As a note, I don't have the paddles, which is a reason to use S on the shifter.
sport plus mode with the shifter pulled down into S makes it so you will hold the gears in place until you change them manually if you touch the paddles If you don’t touch the paddles it’s the same
I really hate this transmission it has really rough down shift especially the 3th gear and the second gear + if I rev my engine at (N ) then changing to D after the rpm goes down there will be a harsh knock in the gear and the car jumps forward. Did you have that?
Normal dive you will save little more gas as throttle in S mode Or in manual burns way faster experts know this. 10 speed is better than manaul if you wanna track it etc automatics these days are far more better than stick shifting. Although its more fun its not the ideal choice nowadays
So your telling me in my 2021 ten speed if I put it in Sport mode I don’t have to use the paddles? Wtfffff does it work the same way for track an drag mode ?
I haven’t driven in sport or any other mode yet bc I haven’t gotten used to shifting threw all 10 gears . If I don’t have to paddle shift in sport mode / track or drag mode that would be a game changer
My ?? Is does that automatic does it have paddles shifters or is this 100 percent automatic no paddle shifts ,, put is S mode ,, I hope this all makes since what I’m asking ,,, I have a manual mustang
I didnt watch the whole video, so im not sure if it was mentioned, but if you are in S (sport) and push firmly forward without pressing the button, it will put you straight into neutral. Really nice if you want to rev quickly while already moving.
Sport plus toggle gives sport suspension, exhaust, throttle, shifts Yes you can drive in D with sport plus When I’m sport plus and you pull the shifter into S, this will allow the car to hold the gears if you touch the paddles until you click it back into D
@JakeTiesler I thought the sports plus toggle in D mode was the sporty mode. And it is more responsive and sounds great. But when I found out that you can use S on the shifter and sports plus on the toggle without using the paddle shifters it felt like beast mode was unleased! Amazing! I love it!. But I do mostly drive in normal mode to save gas. I'm trying to get it to 18 mph average. I'm currently at 17.8. But sometimes when I just wanna go cruising and have fun I'll use sports mode
@JakeTiesler not yet. I'm saving it for when someone wants to race me at a light. Should I put the shifter in S mode then use drag on the toggle? Is that the proper way to use it?

What businesses do you run?
I think you do a good job Jake. Don’t respond to the haters.
Haha this is my hobby and I appreciate everyone for even stopping by 🙌
Having the D for regular driving to save a little.fuel.and then the S for performance is a nice feature.
Exactly

I didn’t know that about the 7th gear thing in drag mode! Awesome news to have more fun!
If you hold + it will retune to aotomatic
10 speed didn't come out till to 2018 models.
I literally found out about this by mistake. Right!
it’s snowing hard rn where i’m at, you guys are making me get excited to drive again once the weather clears up!
I use 'S' when I want to do a short burst of acceleration (like getting on an onramp or from a stoplight) but drive in 'D' when I'm cruising.
🤙
I always drive in sport mode especially around town. But when you get to the interstate, put it back to D. Speeds below 45, shift it to S mode, easy. Over 45, back to D

Yes

Right?😂😂
Seems obviously but I’ve only driven manuals for the past 25 years - I haven’t spent time in a modern automatic

If u gonna race use drag mode traction all the way off in 2nd at a 50 roll and u will drag tf out of everyone especially when tuned ur welcome

Thanks bro I’m getting my GT next week and I didn’t know this, coming from a Challenger
Yoi got yours? I've bought my Mach-1 today. Salute from Brazil. ✌️
Good to know, the 10 speed with the GT PP is a sweet ride.
It’s so good - if you drive a Mach 1 drive the handling package
I drive S everyday it changes the driving experience tremendously. Driving in D is boring lol
It increases throttle sensitivity shift points too

Umm... the owner's manual since the first generation S550 has been "telling," drivers this, but good video for those that don't read their manuals 😅
I just put my GT into Race Track mode ALL the time! Not only fun, but getting my $ worth (Excluding fuel consumption).
I drive in D, and use the S mode as a downshift button basically, yes I could paddle down but using S makes the throttle angle sharper so I get a bit more passing power.

In drive mode gears 8, 9, and 10 are basically overdrive gears. Therefore it’s not as responsive. Simple. Best of both worlds.
Normal Mode = economy mode practically
(SUCKS)
Sport+ mode = true throttle limited only by traction
control, sport steering, rpm's will not drop below ~2000pm which will result in engine breaking as you decelerate, gears will hold after aggressive throttle until you drive at a constant speed, then it will upshift. If you drive over ~60mph, 6th gear will engage because at that speed you are over 2000pm. Therefore, awesome for highway driving over 60mph, but might be too aggressive for city driving.
Track mode = same in every way to Sport+
except, traction is reduced but not removed entirely. What this means is that when you perform WOT's you won't experience lag, making it more "responsive" when you do WOT's. (roll at any speed for example and WOT in Sport+ and then in Track and you'l notice an annoying lag in Sport+ and it's absence in Track). Perfect for racing

Use the S mode on the shifter, it’s more fun!
Do you need to put it in sport mode too or just regular drive mode with the shifter in S?
People actually roll race with the transmission in Drive because it holds gears longer they would put it in S mode just to downshift then they would put it back in D
The average person is used to putting a car in D. Thx for the heads up on this mode!
I use Drive until I get my engine and trans to operating temp then throw into Sport unless I’m trying to conserve fuel
Same
Soooo why don’t you just use the toggles to put it in track or sport??
Thanks man for the info.

Depends on what you want! I like both but have driving manuals for twenty years and wanted to try the new 10 speed
Is it okay if i shift from D to S without using the break while driving?
Always had a manual. Thanks for the instruction!!! My Dark Horse will be the Auto 10-speed because of the wife. I will drive it always in “S” and shift myself.

I have a 2019 Ecoboost Mustang. I always drive in S and sport+ mode all the time
Can I go from D to N and then from N to D on the move? ¿Can I go out in second gear without damaging the gearbox?
I just can’t get a mustang unless it’s a stick. Need that in my life.
I understand that the 10 speed auto’s can shift WAY better than I ever could, but I just like the feeling of total control when I shift thru the gears manually. I thought s was select shift . Cuz when you have it in that and activate shifters you can go bakc
If you don’t touch the paddles or shift selection method , the transmission will shift for you. Once you hit the button or paddle to shift up or down, you’re letting the car know you’re taking over and from there you have to shift ,unless you shift back to D and back to S again.

You can be in D w/ the shifter but use the mode selector switch for sport + / track / drag & the cars acceleration & shifts change w the mode it’s in. For most performance put the shifter in S, then select Track mode / Drag mode
Have you ever rented a Mustang convertible?
Yep, white GT 10A
Video on it
wait so i usually drive in D with the sport+ switch… is driving in the actual s mode better than driving with sport+?
@@audio8932 if you just pull the shifter to S, it won’t switch the dampers, so it’s in between S+ and S
@@JakeTiesler so is s+ better ?
Have you never wondered what the toggle switch "modes" does? Wait until you try track mode
Drag mode is where it's at.
That’s fairly common, just keep your foot on the brake and don’t accelerate until it’s in gear fully.
Hey man do you think it’s bad for the transmission to be switching from D To S a little often while driving?
Not at all, maybe back in the day of the fox body mustangs but not these
So, do you need to drive it in sport mode?
That's a good tidbit!!! I'm a car guy and didn't know that thanks !!!
🙏💪
So how do I get manual mode only? Kind of shit if it doesn’t have an exclusive manual mode…
Pull down into S from shifter and it will hold the gear from the paddle
If u have a 6 speed and switch it to S the car is telling you to shift with pattle shifter
I always drive it in a now and usually use the paddles most the time now.
I got the 6speed 5.0 coyote 🐺
Put it in S and than flip up the switch in sport plus and you have super sport mode.
How did you not know about sport mode???
Here’s where you are not totally correct! D is normal drive and in normal D you can toggle the modes that change a lot of other parameters but the S mode is not Sport it is Select Shift! So yes it will get a sporty shift pattern but if you select a gear with paddles it will hold that gear until you select another gear or hold the + paddles for 3 seconds and then it will return to auto shift in S mode but it is called Select Shift not Sport
An important distinction that should be noted.
Correct
I have a 2014 gt and in the manual it calls it sport mode in which you can use the select shift feature. Wondering what the actual verbiage is in newer guides.
Great video with excellent points excep you said the same thing about 10 times... 😉
Thanks! This was helpful! The manual that comes with the mustang totally sucks!
Wait til he puts it in track mode with the selector then sport mode w the shifter 😊
Im curious what the difference is in fuel economy
A few mpg, it’s much easier to accelerate harder
14mpg in sport vs 17mpg in normal drive
The coyote is insane on top end. Keep Rpms high and let her rip. I can tell you never went full on. This is not a torque monster if you want to feel something get above 4000rpm. I have a 21 manual. Once I learned to drive it like a sports car I fell in love.
The auto is more capable in the right hands.
Totally, I get it man - this car needs to be driven hard to really understand what it’s built for! The thing is, you need a race course to use it properly, the streets are too small and dangerous lol
The new Groundhog Day ?
So if we drive in S can we still pick sports+ and track and with steering .
Does it become more responsive
Folks get confused about the difference. Shifting into sport will give you higher RPMs and better engine breaking and it is what you want to do when in a hilly area. You don't actually need to shift into S for any other reason because Sport+ mode also gives you higher RPMs and better engine breaking but it also changes your steering, dampers (if equipt) , active ehaust (if equipt) and tweaks the computer settings. I use Sport+ all the time, but I leave the stick in D. As a note, I don't have the paddles, which is a reason to use S on the shifter.
Does this work in the 2024 mustang gt in the “m” mode/
I have a 2022 eco boost automatic can i drive my car in sports mode and in sports plus? At the same time or would I have to shift
sport plus mode with the shifter pulled down into S makes it so you will hold the gears in place until you change them manually if you touch the paddles
If you don’t touch the paddles it’s the same
I really hate this transmission it has really rough down shift especially the 3th gear and the second gear + if I rev my engine at (N ) then changing to D after the rpm goes down there will be a harsh knock in the gear and the car jumps forward. Did you have that?
Yes but when I bought it, wasn’t doing this. I need to take it in
Great video I didn’t know
What if you have the base model
Hey Jake, do you know why it skips from 1st to 3rd. I noticed that on my car
Fuel efficiency for normal mode in D w/ the shifter
Does it hurt anything to constantly drive it in sport?
No
Yes, gas mileage
@@JakeTiesler oh that’s it okay I’m glad to hear that
Does the exhaust nodes effect performance?
Little bit if you put it on a dyno
Watched this video for less than 30 secs and immediately recognized where this video was being shot😂 #Gulchgang
Haha say what’s up over here instagram.com/p/Ci2jwnAuuQK/?igshid=N2Q2MGM2OGQ=
Normal dive you will save little more gas as throttle in S mode
Or in manual burns way faster experts know this. 10 speed is better than manaul if you wanna track it etc automatics these days are far more better than stick shifting. Although its more fun its not the ideal choice nowadays
I have a 2021 Handling Pack 10spd and I had no idea holy crap man thx a lot 🎉 🎉 🎉 Let’s Get It LOL
🙌🙌💪💪
So your telling me in my 2021 ten speed if I put it in Sport mode I don’t have to use the paddles? Wtfffff does it work the same way for track an drag mode ?
I haven’t driven in sport or any other mode yet bc I haven’t gotten used to shifting threw all 10 gears . If I don’t have to paddle shift in sport mode / track or drag mode that would be a game changer
You can pull it down into “S” and as long as you don’t touch the paddles, it will do all the work.
Same for all the modes.
What is on the info screen while your filming? What navigation is that? Looks fancy haha,
Nav!
@@JakeTiesler that’s the factory premium mustang nav? Lol. I’ve only ever used my Apple car play and google maps. The stock one looks clean
It’s all new to me too
My ?? Is does that automatic does it have paddles shifters or is this 100 percent automatic no paddle shifts ,, put is S mode ,, I hope this all makes since what I’m asking ,,, I have a manual mustang
Both - you get to choose how you’d like to drive it, it can be 100% manual or 100% auto or both
@@JakeTiesler thank you yes love the car , it is fast fun just stay away from the party poopers 🚓🚓🚓🚓
I didnt watch the whole video, so im not sure if it was mentioned, but if you are in S (sport) and push firmly forward without pressing the button, it will put you straight into neutral. Really nice if you want to rev quickly while already moving.
Thank you I appreciate it bcuz I have one too and now I learn something new today.
🤙🤙🤙
Is car boosted?
no, stock NA 480hp
You said it is all about fuel economy, if you don't care about that by all means slap it into S and go for it.
When should you use sport plus toggle? Can you drive in D with sport plus toggle mode?
Sport plus toggle gives sport suspension, exhaust, throttle, shifts
Yes you can drive in D with sport plus
When I’m sport plus and you pull the shifter into S, this will allow the car to hold the gears if you touch the paddles until you click it back into D
Enjoy the car man! Have you tested drag mode?
@JakeTiesler not yet. I'm saving it for when someone wants to race me at a light. Should I put the shifter in S mode then use drag on the toggle? Is that the proper way to use it?
Oh, if you think sport plus is fast try drag race mode haha
Wb in the 2013-14 and the 05-09? For the 05-09 autos the overdrive button is similar to this right?
2013-14s have the same speaking from personal experience. I don’t think 05-09s do though but I could be wrong
Lol - I will have to try that - nobody has ever said anything y this feature before.
It’s much better
You do a good job of explaining and educating about the car!
