  • First off, my apologies for butchering the beautiful Thai language during my intro. I almost re-shot it because of how bad it came out but I left it intact to realistically represent my actual speaking skill level now.
I went to school for 6 months to try to learn the Thai language. In part 2 of this series, I talk about my current skill level with speaking, reading and writing Thai. I also share some tips for learning, tips for speaking the language and tell you what my plans are for further learning the language.
    00:00 - intro
01:03 - tips, hints and advice
09:52 - my skill levels now
    15:05 - future plans
In part 1, I reviewed my language school and talked about the biggest challenges I had learning Thai.

Having been studying Thai on my own from the states for over four years, I can relate to a lot of what you’re saying. Funny, I also use my finger to conduct when I’m working through speaking out the tones. I also have trouble listening and understanding Thai speakers in a real time conversation no matter how good I’m practicing at home. I see learning to understand Thai or any other language like learning an instrument. You can practice all you want and get good on your own, but it’s a different story once you’re placed into a real conversation situation, like joining your first band and playing with other musicians. It’s all about jumping in and immersing and getting more confident and comfortable. I highly recommend the Benjawan Poomsan Becker 3 volume series of CDs/workbooks. That will get you confident with all the consonant classes and tone rules, among a whole lot of other things.

Someone else recommended the TH-cam series Thai With Grace… it’s great because it’s very slow conversations in Thai. Great for developing my ear more.
I’m not sure if I can find your recommendation here… neither lazada or Amazon Asia seems to have it. Oh… and I don’t have a CD player. Just realized that 😂

@@peteonretreat2023Yes, Thai With Grace is great. There are also plenty of other great TH-cam channels like Learn Thai With Mod, Banana Thai, ThaiPod 101 and a few others. ThaiPod 101 has a free daily newsletter with a vocabulary word of the day, and also free PDF downloads of words and phrases specific to a situation (i.e., traveling words). I make my own digital flashcards (DOC, JPG, PDF) that I store on Google Drive and can access anywhere.

I think you've made great progress, similar to myself after about the same amount of time, but I think you also have the similar problems that I had. Namely, I spent so much time on memorising vocab and phrases that I ignored correct tone and pronunciation. What helped me was I constantly asked my gf to tell me the correct tones and not to just smile and nod if she thought what I was saying was crap (if you know Thai people you will understand how difficult that is for them).
I doesn't take that long to get your ear in to the tones if you are listening and mimicking them everyday.

Yeah, my tone work was worse than normal in this video’s intro. I’ve forgotten which tones many words have recently… I’ll keep going at it and getting better. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hey great job . I've been learning thai for about 6 months now too . I had private tutor lessons online in conversational thai . I would say in that time im low intermediate now . I never delved into writing or reading and have heard the same about learning the letters and it will help with tones . From your intro i can see you have a great vocab but if im honest the tones seemed really off . For example month ( duan ) the way you said it sounded like (dern) to walk , also passa thai , and chuu , . Not being rude just being honest . Great job bro and keep up the good work .

Oh yeah… my intro was horrible. I almost reshot it after I heard it but I left it because I didn’t want to fake my current level.
School ended about a month ago and I stopped doing my flash card work… and simply forgot a lot of the proper tones for many words.
My intro last week was much better… this one is a bit embarrassing because even I can hear how bad it was 😳

What I like about this channel is that Grace speaks to you in conversational Thai and there are English subtitles so in case you’re not familiar with a word you can see it in English. @@wusen the language is interesting… my Thai friend taught me บางที means maybe, a Thai language video I just watched said it means maybe, none of my friends correct me when I use it as maybe but google translate does say it means sometimes. I will start to use อาจจะ more instead and try to reserve บางที for when I want to say sometimes.
I do know that in every language, some words develop different meanings through usage and translating words often doesn’t fit perfectly.
Are you a native Thai speaker? I ask because I’m wondering if บางที is commonly used for both maybe and sometimes… maybe even just regionally.
Thank you for the information. You’re breakdown was very helpful. 🙏🏼

    • @wusen
      @wusen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think the issue here is probably you're looking for a Thai word that matches "maybe" both in meaning and usage. While อาจจะ does mean maybe, it's often used as part of a sentence, not by itself as a short response. At a minimum, you'll need to add a verb to it and an adverb to soften the expression.
บางที on the other hand, can be a short response. And since in many cases, sometimes and maybe can roughly mean the same thing, using บางที for the English word "maybe" both in meaning and usage may be acceptable or understandable. However in some cases, it won't work right. Try answering "Do you want to go now?" with บางที and see how they like it.
I'd suggest using the phrase ขอคิดดูก่อน (khor kid doo gorn), meaning "let me think about it" when you want to say "maybe" to politely avoid giving straight answer. It's a commonly used phrase and works better than the above 2 words. Happy learning!
