Hi Kat, I just discovered you today. Thank you for your sharing about expenses. I’m curious if you could help me understand where you go during the fire-burning season. I’ve heard so much about it regarding smoke and bad air quality. Could you please elaborate on that experience to gain understanding? When is that? How bad is it? Etc. Anything you can share would be appreciated. Thanks!
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I’ve lived in Chiangmai for about 13 years, teaching at an international school, and I’d encourage everyone to give it a visit. All things considered, It’s hard to find a place like Chiangmai anywhere else in the world.
Im 43 and moved to Jomtien next to Pattaya and live alone comfortably on my military pension of 1500 USD a month, mostly with savings left over. That's eating thai food.. I do miss Western food, but it's costly down here near the beach, so maybe I'll check out your lovely city one day. Thanks for the video
@@avamaria8447 Since I eat mostly western meals, the cost of western ingredients/groceries here can actually be more expensive sometimes than just ordering it out (depending on what you eat). Hi! I bought a used motorbike from an expat who was leaving Thailand and it had around 20k kilometers on it and bought it for around 24k baht back in 2019. The prices have changed quite a bit since then but FB Marketplace is a great place to look for secondhand bikes :) I don't think it's necessary to buy a brand new one as you can find really good quality bikes secondhand
Hello Kat, really nice info. Crisp and to the point. Loved it. Two things - you said if you like nature then the costs can vary. So, does the rent, say similar to your kind of set up, becomes cheaper or more dearer than what you’re paying. Second, I don’t like doing household chores. How much a helper/maid service will cost, say if he/she comes thrice in a week for doing basic cleaning. Thanks and good luck from chilly Utqiagvik, Alaska.
The further away from the city you are, the cheaper rent you can find. I use to live in a 2 bedroom/2 bath townhome for $272/month but it was about a 20-25 min drive from the main city center I have a cleaner that comes once a month and I pay 13$ :)
Id mention “visa costs” and an “entertainment” budget covering bar outings, travel around Thailand etc. I run 2000$ a month in Jomtien area, 2/2 65sqm, scooter etc for 2 people and want for nothing.

Hi! I have a Thai bank account and I withdraw money from my US bank at the ATM here (I'm reimbursed those ATM fees each month) and then I deposit into my Thai bank. Alot of people also use Wise to transfer but personal preference :)

Dental work here is very affordable and some of the dentist are actually trained in U.S/Australia too! For a more formal setting, I would highly recommend Chiang Mai University Language Institute (CMU). Last year I believe it was around $1,400 for the 1-year education visa, tuition fees, etc. You can contact them directly here: learnthaicmu@gmail.com and get your visa process started even before you get here (usually). And here is their website: www.learnthaicmu.com/ For CMU, it's usually 2x a week, 3 hours each class. Yes the cost of your expenses can vary depending on your lifestyle and what you need but it is definitely possible to live on a lot less. I would say 900 is doable if you live on mostly Thai food, don't have other expenses or subscriptions and if you don't spend a lot on any activities (gyms, social events, markets, shopping, etc.) but to note - this video only includes basic living expenses (rent, bills & food) but could be helpful to include other expenses in your budget like any activities you enjoy doing, gym, etc. as well :)
Very thorough Video congrats. Since I'm moving to Chiang Mai in July wanted to ask your experience living near Nimman. My first thought is to rent there but would like to know if the price difference is worth it or if there are condos that are near Nimman which have a good balance of location and price. What's your opinion on this?
Thank you! The prices vary a lot depending on what type of condo/place you are looking for (studio, 1 bedroom, etc). I prefer to live outside of Nimman because it can get pretty busy with traffic and I like living in more quiet areas. If you want to live right in the middle of Nimman, you usually will be paying much more because it’s a busy/touristy area but living there also makes everything more walkable so if you’re looking for convenience, it could be an option. I have seen some older condos in Nimman that are decent priced for the location - one in particular called Hillside Condo 3 or Himnimman. I would recommend booking an AirBnB for a week to check out different condos in a few areas: Chang Phueak, Santitham, Jed Yod (these are all within 5-10 min from Nimman) to see what you prefer. It’s much different seeing these places in person to get a feel for what works better for you :) Hope this helps!
Awesome video, thanks! Why did you choose Chiang Mai? I visited it once and it seemed to me like a nice place to visit for a vacation, but long-term I feel I would be a bit bored:) Just wondering what do you like about it and if you feel like it lacks some things or it has everything you need and want daily in terms of entertainment?
Glad you enjoyed the video! It just depends on what type of activities you’re interested in :) I like the low key and slow pace of life here, there’s always something to do - markets, gyms, crossfit and sport events, music events, digital nomad meetups, etc. But when I do feel bored and need a change of environment, I take a flight to the islands when I can. It def helps to find a community here - I’m a part of a Latin dancing community here and I’m into the jazz music scene here too which helps! There’s also tons of weekend trips you can take to explore in the mountains but again it’s really dependent on what type of activities you’re looking for. Hope this helps!
