    -always do studies of the things you enjoy
    - do things that expand your visual library in a good way
    -your visual library is important for developing your own style

    You have opened my mind, now i want to draw even more, i was feeling like crap about everything that i was doing, now i realize it's because i was doing just anatomy studies for months, i wasn't doing many personal projects or anything creative, because my mind was stuck on studies, and just studies, you made remember that i fell in love with drawing, copying dragon ball cards, but now copying unconsciously feels like cheating. I will start copying (being mindful) other artists that i love!, Love u sinix

    Wow, this is my lucky day! Kenzie at LLD hipped me to your channel and I feel so fortunate. Sinix, your channel is a revelation! I am a jazz musician, totally new to drawing but an avid Art lover. Since COVID lock down I have dived into my dream to draw. I can’t thank you enough for all the valuable information and support you give in each episode (which I’ve been bingeing on all morning!) This is just TERRIFIC stuff! Thank you for all you do!

    This is fantastic! It's hard to find good discussions on the theoretical side of art, and now I've a better idea of /why/ building a mental library is important and how to continue that work. Thanks!

    If it's one thing I've taken away from listening to Chiu Streams its that all the top-tier artists in the industry tend to be "students of life." They're amazed by everything that life has to offer and study it and it shows in their creations.

    This is my first video from you and i commend you dearly for bot only articulating the tenants of visual design most amateur artists are struggling with but also in relating specific ways of implementing a balance between a masterful grasp of the fundamentals, plus a good harvest of intellectual flexibility ( i see you there with the Gravity's rainbow book to which i think most your viewers probably overlooked) would greatly increase one's visual library, and to which i myself am doing my best to do so hopefully comparable to, but not exactly as crazy as, kim jung gi. What a Great video!

    How exactly do you do a study? Do you just draw the picture?

    • @ahoaho9542
      @ahoaho9542 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      pretty much.
      But how you study depends on the subject.
      If you're studying objects from life you are focusing on form and understanding, if you're studying anatomy for example you look at how ankles move and what muscle does what. If you're studying artists however, you should focus on shape language and composition.

    • @sinixdesign
      @sinixdesign  7 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      Yes, but with an extra emphasis on making enough observations to be as accurate as possible.

    • @Kamiccolo9000
      @Kamiccolo9000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Aside from that learning about your subject I think is important, just drawing a subject without knowing what you're even drawing is probably not gonna be as helpful as actually looking at a chart or something identifying the parts and such and then studying by drawing. at least I found that helpful, it matters more or less depending on the subject but I think it's crucial.

      I think it's just a little deeper than that, but kind of yes. Recently I've been really into studying samurai Armour. But I don't think it would have fit well enough Into my visual library if just looked at a picture and drew the exact same thing the exact way it is in the image. Instead, I take note of and draw the individual pieces of the armour, taking into consideration their forms and how those actually fit together. I ask questions about what the details are rather than just taking it all at face value; questions like "what's holding this armour together?", "How is this armour designed for mobility?", And "how would one put all this on"?. Your goal in studying should be to make sense of the puzzling complexities of a subject by reverse engineering it and rebuilding in your head until a close likeness is achieved. Usually when you can actually represent each component seperate from all the other components, or the entire set of armour "blown up" so each piece is seperated; then you have effectively placed something into your "hard" visual library. Of course those are just structural observations; there's other things like colour, surface reflectivity, texture etc., But the same idea applies.

    Great video and I can see where you're coming from with the idea that creativity itself doesn't exist as a metaphysical thing. I agree! But it can also exist as a conceptual thing, without literally being random (or without being attributed to something supernatural or extraphysical). The idea is that you 'create with intent'. In a sense creativity is a mental concept. It shouldn't be looked upon as a goal or even a tool. Exploring chaos and turning that into a design == creativity at work. Designing iterations of a very tight render is probably a similar kind of creativity, but using different tools or approaches. It's probably a more methodical and less rigorous approach to designing from chaos and not really caring too much about what you've created already.
    Also, not to talk negatively about one of the most technically skilled concept artists I've come across, but Scott Robertson definitely is one of those designers who loves to iterate on successful versions of previous designs. He loves to change familiar concepts with steps of maybe 4-5% at a time if you know what I mean. :-) One could make a fair point about how that's a bit 'less creative' and 'more methodical' than exploring full on chaos and 'creatively' turning a mess into a design with less of an end goal in sight from the start.
    I'm guessing that's what you were thinking about with Kim Jung Gi. I do believe Kim Jung Gi might be using a third type of approach to his designs. Which is a kind of pre-visualisation of what he is about to draw. I don't know if he has some type of photographic memory that aids him in doing this or if it is simply skill mastered over years, but he seems very capable of just drawing things in one go as if it was all planned for from the start. Impressive, but I'm guessing most of the designing is already done inside his head lol.

    This is partly why I want to pickup art / visual design. It's highly interesting to me on its own but I also see it as an invaluable tool for improving my game designs. In the most literal sense of creating better visual worlds / interfaces but also in the more abstract creative sense. Expanding my conceptual design muscles will likely help immensely when it comes to abstract thinking and coming up with new creative ideas.
    I also really like the thought of coming up with stronger aesthetics and vibes to give my games more character. I feel that pursuing art would help immensely.

    I struggle a lot with my visual library. My brain, the conscious part at least, has aphantasia. I don't see any images in my brain, I can't retain or recall anything beyond a very fleeting or blurry idea, even important things. It's extra frustrating when it comes to my art as I am very good at drawing from life and reference, but can't really create anything from pure imagination. However I've generally found that if I draw something from reference enough, I can retain it. If I consume enough of a kind of art or style, I will sometimes dream derivative images that I try to jot down, and in general I will "understand" the structures of those images more.

    • @gongorelocksmagiincommand
      @gongorelocksmagiincommand 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      shmowldraws for me, doing a “study” is looking at a reference. This reference can be of an artists you enjoy or just any reference in general. Then you draw/paint that reference. When it comes to “master studies” (i.e. redrawing from an artist you like) I try to do it while thinking how the artist did it. Doing master studies from many artists you like will pool many influences and will make you, you. All in all to start a study... just find something and draw it. Hope that helped :)

    Interesting. I used to play this game with classmates throughout all of my school years where I'd have them draw several random shapes, lines, or whatever on a blank piece of paper, without any specific object or thing in mind for it. Then, I'd have to use everything they put down to turn it into something. It could be a real-world thing, a fantasy thing, whatever. It just couldn't be some abstract blur of randomness, it had to have a fully-encompassed form using all of the pieces the classmate laid down. If that all makes sense. I didn't realize how useful that "game" was until my adult years.
    I've taken the same art 101 classes over and over, from public school every year growing up, to private lessons, and college courses. It's always the same basic stuff, which is useful, but it's very dull and the teachers don't usually do a good job of piecing everything together to make it engaging and easily-connectable.
    I'm sure I'm far from the only person that grew up mostly self-taught, despite the surplus of art classes I took.

    Please pardon my ignorance, as I am a bit behind the times in terminology. When you mention Studies, does that imply looking over the artist's work alone, but to also copy it incorporating it into your own way of illustrating? As a young lad, I copied Green Lantern, Superman, etc. directly from the comic pages and the "way" it was drawn has stuck with me. Just wanted to check in and see if this is what you meant.

    How do you do a "study" of something, as you mentioned at around 8:25 ?
