Thomas, this is literally what i need right now. i am addicted scrolling Instagram reels, to the point i delayed my most priority task. thank you for the advice

I am doing digital declutter (Cal Newport) and it's based on these principles of removing digital tools that are not essential for 30 days and then reassessing their value. In the interim, you instill high quality leisure. Removing the apps from my phone and my goal of trying to use my phone less (Maximum 1 hour but daily goal is less than 30 minutes a day) has been really helpful to me.
I honestly miss your podcasts, Tom. It has been part of my more productive morning routines. it gets me motivated to start the day on the right foot. Hoping you can do this again some time. Thank you.
Definitely like the idea. My issue is TH-cam and "FOMO," fear of missing out. Not so much on entertainment, but small, potentially practical information, that can potentially help me out in life, which many times it has. However I've definitely spiraled down the rabbit hole way to many times. It's tough for me, because a good amount of that information, did actually help me out if life, but at times the amount of cumulative time has hurt me...ie; my latest unsuccessful and huge time suck searches, for online, work at home jobs, which probably cost me a letter grade in school, as I was determined that I could find at least one. Didn't happen.
Hey, I've been going through a journey for a long time on increasing my productivity and living a more fulfilling life. I had this exact same issue. TH-cam took up WAY to much of time but I didn't want to completely block it and lose the many opportunities for learning that TH-cam provides. What I found that works for me is a web extension called Unhook. With Unhook I can strip TH-cam of everything except the search bar and the video itself. No recommendations no notifications, no comments if I don't want them. I've found that not only do I spend a lot less time on TH-cam, but the time I do spend is on content that is educational and something that actually gives me a benefit. I also only use TH-cam on my computer to eliminate the possibility of wasting time in the mornings or evenings on my phone. Hope this helps.
I've been following Thomas' channel since I was in high school, right now I'm already in my last year of university. Love this channel! Missed your videos and found that this one hit hard. Thank you Thomas!
It's something I've tried to do and I can ignore the notifications but I think since it's been a habit, it's really hard to break. Thanks for this video.
Things such as scrolling, even though we aren't willing to accept it to be a part of our life or think its a useless activity, we do inevitably fall into its trap and do seem to like it ( since we do it often ). But eradicating such restrictions on ourselves by being proactive and being professional towards our life, its greatly rewarding and a great treat to our future self.
In Redmi Note 12, you can setup automatic times for turning your phone off and on. I just set it up so when I'm in bed, it's already off. This has been helping me, since it's way easier to grab my kindle than turn on the phone again I can either select to turn on again before the alarm, but I just decided to buy a physical alarm clock. That way I don't have to rely on the phone for that and I can set it up to turn on later on the day.
For my instagram password, I have changed it to a very hard password and turned off autologin in my password manager. Then I've written my password onto post-it note and folded in a place where I have to look it up and type it by hand. Make it a hell of a chore to enter a bad habit!
THIS INCLUDES TH-cam! don't rationalize it like I did "it's educational content. I get value X, Y, Z!" At the end of the day its still ripping you away from what matters. You're not as present as you could be. All that knowledge you seek isn't gatekept on youtube alone. You can find it elsewhere. How else did that knowledge end up on YT in the first place? You're going to have ups and downs. You WILL "relapse". But that's okay. Because growth isn't linear. I believe in you guys. You can do it.
Doing this has allowed me to rekindle my long lost love of reading. I stopped reading shortly after getting social media in middleschool. I was 24 when I decided to begin making changes and now I'm 26 and I'm making great progress on dense, intimidating books. I haven't finished them but that's not the point. The point is that I'm trying.
Haha! Watching from after the gym about to go to work cheers! You were the first productivity TH-camr I allowed to affect my life and have been a fan since undergrad and now 1 year away from finishing my masters! Thanks for what you do good sir
Thank you for this... I have told myself for over a decade that I spend too much of my time on my phone. I no longuer have the social media apps installed and it helps, but I have never been able to delete TH-cam. And as you say, we replace a bad habit by an other : as my time with social media went down, my time with youtube went up. It didnt fix the problem. So... by watching this video, you made me realise that now... it's TH-cam's time to go. Thank you Thomas.
Just as a consideration, I think it'd be really interesting to talk to an ADHD focused TH-camr (How To ADHD being a great example) about this stuff, since as you say at lot of these solutions are really simple but for non neurotypical folks they can be hard to engage with. I think it would be absolutely fascinating and enlightening for both ADHD and productivity focused audiences to see a cross over in ideas between both sides.
I do look at my phone, but I read an ebook instead. This way I get some reading done and built that habit. Putting that ebook on the home screen was a great change.
Closing down my battle net account and steam had been one of the best clean up I did. Sometime the itch still hits but its becoming more and more manageable as the years past.
Making ice cream, frozen yogurt and frozen pureéd fruit is soooo easy if you have one of those cheap ice cream makers that have the insert that you place in your freezer. .. Frozen yogurt, place store bought or home made yogurt in the maker, and 15 minutes later you have frozen yogurt. Frozen pureéd fruit, place frozen banana in a blender or mini food processor, pureé to a smooth paste and eat. (No ice cream maker needed.) Ice cream usually has a few ingredients to combine, add to ice cream maker, and 20 minutes later you have ice cream, ready to eat! Invest in an ice cream maker and quit buying ice cream with all those chemicals. Don't want it as readily available, don't store the insert in the freezer, I'm thinking it takes 6 hours? Or overnight to get ready for the making. Still faster than delivery and cheaper. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.
Yeah man that's exactly what I did a couple of months ago and its been really awesome. I ended up getting a flip phone with that runs android and that seems to work the best for me. Cheers mate!
You have beautiful eyes 🙂 I have deleted all the social media apps from my phone now and I am gonna try being more productive. Video was super helpful. Thanks!!
I appreciate this video a lot, but for people like me who work on social media (for clients) it isn't as easy as it sounds, unfortunately. Still, you make a great point and made me realize I should be at least try to do things differently. Replacing the half an hour before bed habit of Instagram reels with a chapter of a book sounds cool to me. Thanks Tom!
Ok so I have a TH-cam scrolling addiction (especially now they've added shorts everywhere) so I decided to delete the app and just watch on my laptop as suggested... But my phone won't let me delete the app... Now I'm scared 😅
Same, but I found out that if you hit the three dots and tap not interested on the shorts on your home page for a bit, they'll disappear. I personally don't get tempted to go into the shorts section, which is good cus I have no idea how to remove that.
I do this on occasion and I always find that I do much better with them gone. I can go to the webpage which would take that activation energy. Also, it makes it more intentional if I pull up the website on my MacBook Air and I tend to spend less time on social media overall. So, this time, I’m deleting them again and not bringing them back. Period
I am a short video content creator. Part of my job is watching Reels/TikTok. Unfortunately as u said, that's really addicting. But i can't delete these social media yet, they are fundamental for my job
The app timeout on Android doesnt help. I just add more minutes and hour then proceed to procrastinate. I think I deleted these apps before and it really helped but at some point, I installed them back again :( but it helped a little. Maybe its time again to delete these apps 😅
Hate to be that person but activation energy is a scientific term, and it's a great analogy that can be used for habits as well as a pretty cool scientific concept about changing states
Yo what i noticed from working retail on the weekends ? Most people will get so depressed during their lunch break when they start scrolling and seeing their friends and family out and about on their social media. I know 2 girls who just straight up deleted their social media to avoid this habit. I did something better which was bringing in a book to read every break on the weekend, as I never ate during my breaks because I tend to feel sleepy when I eat and the store i worked at was the mall so everything was more expesnsive so to save money and avoid feeling sleepy I read.
I used to not have them in my phone at all. for like 1.5 years. then I downloaded them again just to check something real quick. after that day. I don't know how I got used to it for 1.5 years. and now it's so addicting.
when entering or exiting sleep there is a phases where im just laying thinking but too tired to get up and too awake to sleep right away. and so im more likely pick up my phone.
Same problem but at night time. Deleted the Apps several times, never really trusted that this would be a long term fix cause its so simple. After two/three weeks always redownloaded thinking ill give it another shot cause i can/must learn to control myself. Maybe i dont… maybe a just need to keep the apps deleted…

I recently downloaded an app to block me from using certain apps on my phone at certain problem times, and while it did help some, it also kind of just shifted the problem times around when I'm using it. I probably should just delete things entirely, but I'm not ready for that right now.
I love the idea of it. My "bad" habit app is Instagram. But the problem with it is that I also use it to share my artwork with my followers in order to (hopefully one day) build up my own business or a job in the art industry. At the moment I mainly do this through posts and stories. (I'm not a fan of reels, even though they would probably give me more reach). Unfortunately there is no option to post stories on the desktop version... :c (at least I wouldn't know where to do that) so I'm kind of tied to a mobile version of Instagram to be able to use this feature. x.x

Then you have instagram, and once you’ve deleted all those, you go as low as LinkedIn 😂😂😂 I am doing this and it sucks
Sure. Especially if you have projects, or something greater to do.
Yeah, this one time I deleted instagram and facebook and ended up on reddit XD
