I am 67 I have owned dozens of cars. With out exception our
Prius is the finest car we ever owned. It’s a 2006 with 160,000. I dove almost two hundred miles in back roads at about 55 mph.
The astounding thing is I got 51.5 mpg. Yes fifty one miles per gallon.

That's great to hear! I'm rolling at 222,XXX in our 2007. Everything is still smooth as silk. No suspension squeaks or anything. It's almost unbelievable! One thing I have noticed is it runs a lot smoother with a bottle of octane boost or running 91 through it. I'll never buy another daily driver!

I have nearly double the mileage on my 2009 Prius with currently 173,114 miles on it with 100% original spark plugs, hybrid battery, engine, transaxel... A typical 2009 car would only have like 97,000 miles on it around this time frame. its not really about the milage how long the battery last, its more to do with age since a 2009 car is not that old to this current date.

    • @Frankenfoods
      @Frankenfoods 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I'll try running some 91 though mine to see how it feels. Never hurts to burn some higher octane to clean things up every once in awhile. My suspension is creaking a little, but i drive it like i stole it, so i understand :)

    • @Frankenfoods
      @Frankenfoods 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

If you never changed the transaxle fluid, it would be a good time now. I bought mine used with around that mileage and when i drained it, it was in bad shape, I think i caught it just in time. Everything else could wait till it started having issues.

We have had 3 Priuses, 2 totalled by accidents caused by other drivers & the last caused by a peeder at our post office who was doing 60mph in the driveway of our post office. My girlfriend was backing out & couldn’t stop & he was not there when she accelerated to back out.
We are looking for our fourth but there are too many Priuses that have been hit & where people are trying to get full Blue Book prices for scratched and very damaged cars or cars with issues like the $ 800 navigation console doesn’t work.
We won’t buy one until we see that everything works with no body damage.
I talked to someone at a garage in San Francisco that works on Priuses and he said his Prius has 400,000 miles and is still going strong.
The record for a Priuse is a cab in New York that has a MILLION miles on it !!!

I am driving a 2006 Prius for over 12 years. Replaced battery around 100 000 for $3,200. I am now at 128K. I have been very happy with my Prius, except when it is very windy and the wind hits you from the side. So far It is the best car I have ever had.

I sold my 2006 with 135,000 miles on it - still with the original brakes. One way to reduce tire wear (and help gas mileage, to boot) is to inflate them harder. I used 42 psi front and 40 psi rear.
I lost a cell in my traction battery at 105,000 miles, but Toyota saw that I had a good service record and offered to pay for the new battery if I paid the labor. Sold!
All in all, it was an awesome vehicle. When I sold it, I bought a 2015, which I also love.

Bought my wife a new Prius in March 2011. She's put 184,000 miles on it in 7 years and it's never had a single service problem of any description. Still runs like brand new. She gets around 45 city miles/55 road miles to the gallon.
We've found that few people know what a true hybrid is. The Prius has two engines - an electric engine and a gas engine and it constantly hands the work back and forth between the two engines. When going downhill or sitting still, the gas engine turns off. When accelerating or going uphill, the gas engine turns on. It's only using gas approximately half the time, giving it high mpg overall.
On an unrelated note, I drive a 2000 Toyota Tacoma that has 430,000 miles on it and it also has never had a single service problem. Still runs like new. Of course I've always kept it maintenanced up real good.
I've never bought any brand but Toyota (5 in 41 years). All them have been incredibly long-lasting and dependable.
There was a guy at the Toyota dealer where I bought my wife's Prius who had a '78 Corolla wagon with more than a million miles on it.
Toyota and Lexus (the luxury Toyota brand) always score 1 and 2 on Consumer Reports' Most Reliable Car Manufacturers year in and year out. It's always baffled me how anyone could spend 30,000 dollars on any product and not do any research on what is the most dependable and long-lasting.

I purchased from the original owner, 2012 Prius V3 several years ago. I liked it so much, I bought a 2013 Prius V3 for my daughter. GREAT cars, 52 m.p.g., and it can haul a lot of stuff! At 110,000 miles I plan to change the coils, plugs, coolant, etc. You just need to be aware that the original 12 volt battery should be replaced periodically. My mechanic tells me that these cars require very little maintenance. Soon, gas cost may approach $5/gallon, and that should help me retire more comfortably.

Have a 2004 prius with 176k on original hybrid battery. Owned since 82k miles. Still gets average 46mpg. Beside the gas mileage, it has been the most reliable car I've owned in over 40 years. The maintenance requirements are also minimal. Your best bet is to buy a 100k plus prius that has been maintained and it will probably last another 100k. By the way, to further corroborate the video, the car is still running on the original brakes!

I bought a 2007 for my granddaughter in 2021. It had 110,000 miles at the time. The battery pack is needing to be replaced. This is attributed to the car not having been driven much before my purchase, which in turn lead the batteries sitting without recharging regularly while being driven. I'll replace for about $1500 and look for another 150,000 miles. Great car, perfect for launching a granddaughter.

Owner of a 2005 & 2009 Prius, and logged 800k miles between the two. Still driving the 2009 for Uber. I've replaced both my factory batteries as precautionary only. Never had an issue. Installed rebuilt for around $200. Takes only about 15min. No big deal at all. I've done tons of my own maintenance of these cars. The biggest weakness is the front bumper cover. Small animal strikes are devastating like raccoon and opossum. I've replaced several bumper covers. Other weakness and this goes for all new cars. Change the oil from the start every 3-5k with synthetic if you don't want to be burning oil and ruining your catalytic converter which are expensive on this car. They use low tension rings in newer vehicles and they can freeze easily with carbon buildup. Outside of that the Prius is an excellent and very efficient car. Comfortable ride, and lots of cargo room.

Dude tells it like it is. The 2004 - 2009 Prius was deliberately over engineered, to ensure the Prius Hybrid brand would attain legendary status - which it doubtlessly has. I have a 2008 T Spirit UK model, and it's revolutionised the way I drive. It's unbelievably frugal on fuel, saving me over £4,000 in just 2 years! My take on this technologically advanced vehicle? omah my prius died early @ 180,000 miles because i didnt drive 40 miles to recharge/balance the hybrid battery once per month according to TOYOTA FLOW DEALERSHIP. I only drive 5 miles to 12 hour job, then 5 miles home or walmart. Replaced for $3500 including labor @TOYOTA FLOW DEALER ,3 year free replacement warrenty. Pisssed me off $$$$$
So yeah, if you really googled battery tech, you'd know the less miles you drive per drive to charge the batterries to full, THE SOONER THEY DIE!!! since youre draining them to zero, damaging the cells=shorter life span.
Also my engine light came on code p420 for burned out catalytic converter & o2 sensors. TOYOTA WANTED $2500 !!!! Fixed it myself $800 new magnaflow catalytic conver, o2 sensors upstream downstream, extension drive tool, angle grinder power tool.
My 04 prius gets 40 mpg, tested filled @ gas pump, not that inaccurate mpg reader in the prius monitor screen.

Two things that will go out after warranty (10 years or 150k) First is the catalytic converter. In Calif, you must use OEM. $1300 part only at the dealer. Second, the main battery will blow one of 28 modules. A new pack will cost $2000 plus installation. I chose to replace the module myself and have done it 4x. Each module is $40 on E-Bay. It take me 5 hours of my labor. Oh, my 2005 is loaded and only has Bluetooth for the cell phone. My battery blew at 165k. Some will go for longer. It's a time thing. I'd like to find an old Prius with a blown battery and buy it for peanuts. This will be more common as the cost of a new battery approaches the value of the car. But a Prius is very dependable and low cost to keep. Two more things that will go out on Gen 2 before the warranty is out.The inverter water pump but that is covered with unlimited mileage. Second is the 3 way water valve that shuttles hot water to a ("thermos") . About $80 on Amazon. Not coverd by the dealer. Gen 3 (2010-2015) have additional problems with the electric water engine cooling pump and the EGR valve (not present on GEN 2) which makes GEN 2 the most reliable and cheap to keep.

They were the original Toyota OEM brakes that came with the car. Most of the miles were highway miles for work, which is how the brakes lasted so long, I rarely had to use them. Using the engine brake (B), helps a lot too.

I own a 2005. I picked it up in March, 2005. I turned down the leather option. So, I was given that option when I ordered it in late 2004. Here in 2018, my prius has only 41K miles. The only thing I've replaced is a water pump. I do regular maintenance at my local Toyota dealer. The official line on the lithium ion batteries it they last 10 years or 150K miles. I agree with what you have observed about their batteries.

my 06 has 278k and my 07 has 172k. Second owner of both. Be aware of northern prius both of mine came from new York and Virginia I live in Georgia no salt issues but do have underbody rust on both. Change the plugs 30k, trans fluid every 15k and oil every 3k. The gen II does use oil between oil changes as both of mine do. It is worse on long high speed (80+mph) trips having to check between fuel fillups but no big deal I expect that in any newer high mileage car. Ive replace the driver hub assembly on both, muffler on both(rust). Inverter coolant pump on the 07 (common issue) rear brakes, charcoal canister and purge valve under the car too. Other than that both are low maintenance. They do tend to wander at higher speeds on the highway but that was solved with chassis braces and strut bars along with 205/65/15 tires. I average 42-48 mpg in mine if I drive the way its designed but if I drive aggressive I get around 35-38 mpg. These cars are very easy to work on and very reliable.

When you add a GromAudio VLine2 unit to 2nd gen Prius (w/ Nav), this adds CarPlay and more to my Prius extending the functionality. I was able to use Roku stick with this unit meaning that I can watch Netflix or Prime Video on my screen. I can also add TH-cam video as App to the Grom and watch video. It took 2 hours to install without any splicing. It has custom harness. I was able to pair a wireless keyboard with the VLine so that I can type in searches on the TH-cam app faster than the online keyboard. VLine2 unit only works on 2nd gen Prius that has a NAV unit. That is because the custom harness was made for that Prius trim. The VLine unit allows for a mouse via USB port. I use HDMI input port and the 2nd USB port for my Roku stick. It has HDMI output port for backseat headrest monitors. The VLiine unit can cast to smart monitors if you can have smart TV/monitor. It allows for a front or rear camera using a Grom accessory harness. I don’t know if it would work for a side camera. This was the best update for 2nd gen Prius using the existing Prius hardware.

@@camposvazquez I found out about the Grom unit from the Prius Chat forum. If a girl can install it in 2 hrs, then anybody can. The advantage of the Grom unit is that the wiring harness for the unit was built with the Prius in mind. There is no splicing and you get to keep the existing Prius H/W including the factory monitor (this serves as monitor for the Grom). The Grom unit has a lot of support with their own videos on their channel and has a webpage for submitting questions on about everything. There is no room for error in the install and you can easily remove the Grom unit from Prius. BTW, the GROM unit can be used on other vehicles (Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Mercedes,Nissan, Infinity, Cadillac, ….) as long as you buy the proper HARNESS from GROM for that vehicle. There is a compatibility chart by Grom.

The best thing about a Toyota is that it is built by the Toyota Production System. Any failure stops the production line, so they don't have failures (if the supervisors expect to keep their jobs). They continually improve the production process and eliminate any waste. Providing great value. My Mercedes had a layer of brake dust on the wheels two weeks after I cleaned them. I've never seen more than a light layer of dust after 5,000 miles on my Prius. The dealer does a free cleaning with the 5,000 mile service.

Hey Greg your right about durability and low maintenance. It just so happens that color car you used in your video is exactly my wine colored 2005 model. Yours had 118k and mine has 223,000 miles. Up to 2 months ago,
I never had a serious problem with my Prius. I had to replace the water pump in Florence, South Carolina on my way to New York from Florida.. I did not go to the Toyota dealer in the town but, headed to Triple A rated service station with Triple A and paid $380..( a little haggling got the service station to drop their price $30.) A second major problem I am experiencing the past 10,000 miles is the air conditioning system has a leak and I am finally bringing it into a shop in Melbourne, Florida.. On the initial diagnosis 2 weeks ago to find the leak is showing no leak in the engine area so, my mechanism suspects it may be in the dashboard somewhere. Btw, I had the car
Re-painted in November 2016 by Earl Sheib for $425 and the car looks like it rolled out of the dealer showroom.
I just love it! Btw, I am still getting 45-55 mpg .. There is way to catch the vehicle when it is driving in its battery mode to maintain staying in its battery mode for minutes without switching to gas. You have to be light on the gas pedal and not flooring it. The best mileage is around 35 mph and then around 57mph. Two last things I want to mention about this Prius, it has the speed to go fast when you need it .. I have hit 80-84 many times on long highway trips but, the cars handling, balance, turning radius and nimbleness amazes me! The last point is the
interior roominess and cargo capacity are excellent. I have hauled all kinds of things inside with the seats down and filled the car up and the engine and car never notice the extra weight inside as the car rides so smoothly on the highway...when the seats are up in the back there is so much leg room for tall people and the seats are very comfortable...you were right about the wear and tear on the arm rests and center console so, a long time ago I
put in my own lightweight cream colored leatherette fabric over those 3 places and the back seat arm rests as well and the car looks great because of it. Thanks for the video. I am Ron contact me at ronbab@yahoo.com if you or other owners would like to talk...do you know the small battery trick in the back that will put back your dashboard lighting if they should suddenly go out on you?..call or write and I will explain what you need to do.

Just a tip on the hybrid battery; I own a hybrid repair shop Venturahybrid.com
We see higher mileage cars with the original battery still. It's our belief that the battery lasts longer in cars that are driven daily because they get constant charge/discharge cycles. It seems lower mileage cars that may have sat idle for a period of time tend to need replacement sooner (I know, I know, it's the opposite of what you would think). Think about your cell phone. If you leave it idle for a period of time, it will self discharge in a few days (or weeks) even though it wasn't used, right? Same seems true with Prius HV batteries. I'm not saying to Dont buy a low mileage Prius, but just be aware that it could have battery issues sooner than what you would expect. If you replace it with a factory new battery from Toyota, you should get a good 10 years out of it depending on how much you drive (we source factory new hybrid batteries directly from Toyota and install them for $3199 plus tax)
By the way, I have a 2005 Prius with 180k miles. We took a 2000 mile road trip in august and gas was less than $100 ;) great little cars!

Just remember, oil is cheaper than replacing an engine. These cars can run forever as it doesn't stop them from being used as pilot escort cars and taxis if burning oil was a concern.

@@dcabana1 I don't think it's jealousy.if it wasn't these people would simply gomout and buy one. I think it's ignorance and insecurity.

I like my 2009 Prius but iam letting it go because they have stole my cat converter twice in 6 months here in California. Thinking about trading in for a bolt EV.
I just put a cat converter shield but its just a detterent. Even though insurance covers it I still gotta pay $300 out of pocket every time they steal it

The front tyres wear quicker because it is a front wheel drive car. The front wheels are the driven wheels and also under braking the front wheels take more of the weight of the car (true for all cars, regardless of the driven wheels). Whether the braking force is applied using regenerative braking or normal braking is irrelevant to the tyre wear.

Great video. I am looking at a 2006 Prius with 102K. The prices today are a lot higher and at $6,500 that seems steep. I never owned a hybrid car and am concerned about owning own especially one that has 102K and had a minor accident some 65K miles ago back in 2012. Any thoughts?

So it’s ok to buy a 2008 Prius? Even if it’s been more than 10 years?

Lots of details I didn't know. The word is around about the improvements in 2006 but I had no idea what they were.

    I have a 2005 with leather interior! 114K mile
I bought it 2 years ago with 80 + K mile on it.
Changed the front twice. once after purchase and then a year later the front brakes.
Was the leather interior first introduced in Europe in 2005?

As a Prius owner since 2015 I can tell you that front tyre wear is just the same as any front wheel drive car. The video is wrong in this aspect.
