I owned and ran my own professional battery business. Across approx. 100 packs rebuilt, the median age before failure was about 11.5 years, km's didn't appear to influence this as much as time. Incredibly reliable car. I own 2 Gen 2's with half a million kms between them.....best car I've owned and I've owned 'a lot" of cars. Covered parking, no extreme cold or extreme heat is best for long battery life. Most failures occur on a cold start in cold weather....maximum demand conditions placed on the cells.

Have had four, first still driving around with 280,000 miles. Needed some cells in the battery replaced due to cooling fan not being cleaned by dealer. Second now has 250,000+ third one around 150,000 and my current Prius has 165,000 . . . all four still being driven every day, two are now taxis. As advised in the review, check dealer cleans the fan, replace all fluids on time and keep an eye on the oil consumption from about 60,000 miles onwards. Incredible cars, am going to by the next version (1.8L). Have two friends who own them (1.8), one just reached 300,000 miles the other at 320,000. Love you reviews, you sure do know your cars 👍

I have two Gen 2 Prius; and they have been marvelous. Recently on a vacation with the 2008 with 190,000 miles on it the RED TRIANGLE on the dash lit up; this while we were climbing a grade and soon after the positive traction control light and check engine light as well. The car drove well in any case and we got to our vacation home after +50 miles and a steady 60 mph. The O'Reilly Auto parts store analyzed the diagnostics and it showed a P0A93 coolant pump defect. BUT the inverter pump is not a part in stock at auto parts stores. The dealer 20 miles away had one but their service department could not install it for a week and it would have cost $500 at the least. Enjoyed the weekend beach stay. I decided to take the car it home, staring at the TRIANGLE OF DEATH, as the route was all highway and I figured the airflow at speed would cool the inverter. ALAS! It got home.
I got a replacement pump for $30 next day from Amazon. With YOU TUBE tutorials, screw driver and 10mm socket I got the pump replaced and warnings reset.
For my other Prius I got a spare pump that will be in the car.

Also check to see if it can accept a full tank of gas. This generation of Prius has a bladder in the gas tank (to reduce emissions) and it will lose it's flexibility in cold weather and over time, resulting in only being able to have a partial fill on the 12-gallon tank. in extreme cases you might only be able to put a few gallons in at a time. A replacement costs about $1K at an independent garage. This gas tank issue is something not often mentioned in videos like this.

This is a good review, he covers a lot of the major issues that can arise. One that he did not mention is the brake accumulator pump. Toyota offered a 10 year warranty on all of these however certain check engine lights have to be on for them to replace it for free. Just replace the one in my 2008 got the pump from a salvage yard for 250 bucks took me about 5 hours to replace it. Other than that they are very reliable cars. mine has 235,000 miles on it, everything else still works well. They have lots of room on the inside They Ride fairly Softly. And get good gas mileage. if you're afraid to work on a car yourself I would definitely look at one with low miles or a warranty. They don't often go wrong but if they do it can be expensive if you're not willing to fix it yourself. But that's true on most older cars.

Many 2008 Priuses get very bad rust. Oddly its seem to be the blue ones mostly, so clearly there was a problem on that production line. Toyota, true to form, denies there's a problem. You can also get rust in strange places like the ends of the bars that open/close the hatchback and the bolts that hold seats to the frame (the seats are pretty badly designed all around in the Gen 2).

You're 100% spot on about replacing the CVT transmission fluid; I don't know how one would check it before purchase. I bought a '13 model from a Toyota dealer and they sold it to me as a CPO car. I wanted the transmission fluid changed and they insisted it wasn't needed until the 100K mile service. My new to me car had 68K miles on it so I ordered some Amsoil Signature and also got some new 5 year coolant and had a local shop change all the fluids for $40. There is also a separate coolant jacket reservoir in the transmission. The fluid that drained out was very dirty (no filter) and after the new fluid was added I noticed the car shifted better immediately as soon as I pulled away from the shop. I have heard of people who have 250K miles on their Prius and have never changed the CVT fluid but I can't afford a new transmission although I know the dealer would love to sell me one. My complaint about my '13 model was the back up camera went out at 6 months and it was replaced under dealer warranty. At 13 months it died again and the dealer wants $1325 for a new one. NOPE! I can't afford that either. I bought it for camping. Whether it's hot or cold I can set the interior temp at 65 or 70 degrees F and fold down the back seat and sleep comfortably on a camping mattress just like I was at home and use maybe 1/2 gallon of gas all night.

Update; neither Amsoil or Toyota recommends any other transmission fluid in the CVT. I have drained and replaced the fluid again with WS Toyota trans oil. Supposedly there are 2 electric motors in the trans and any other oil than the Toyota WS oil could possibly cause an expensive malfunction. Now at 83K miles the Prius runs fine and I have camped/slept in it for as long as 7 weeks while traveling the country.

+garth locklin What shop will change all the fluids for $40??? Can you go into detail on the part where you said "There is also a separate coolant jacket reservoir in the transmission"? I don't understand that. No filter? Is this a Prius thing, or an assembly error on your car?

    • @garthlocklin6355

@@saganandroid4175 I have to buy all the fluids ahead of time and I'm paying a local mechanic who is semi retired to change the fluids on his lift. I don't know about the 2nd Gen Prius like yours but the 3rd Gen like mine has 2 separate cooling fluid jackets, one for engine coolant and the other for CVT coolant. There is videos on TH-cam. As for the CVT transmission oil itself I was informed the "Amsoil" brand was the wrong stuff because the WS Oil from Toyota is a special formula for those transmissions so, I drained it again and added 3.5 quarts or whatever it took a 2nd time 10K miles later. As far as I know the 3rd Gen Prius doesn't have a transmission filter and many new cars have transmissions sealed from the factory which are supposed to last for the lifetime of the car. Not a good idea IMO because I maintain all my vehicles well.

I have owned a 2005 Prius for 17 year. There have been no issues until it spent too much time not being driven during winters at 6000 feet with frequent below-freezing temperatures. Two winters ago I replaced the hybrid battery with a Green Bean battery ($1500 with life time of car warranty and free service whenever needed) and a new 12volt. Since then the only issue I have had is when I did not drive it for 4 days in sub-zero temps. A friend pulled the 12 volts and charged it overnight. Everything is working great now and I just make sure to take it for a spin every other day.

Swayed by Consumer Reports and knowing that the Prius was being used in taxi service in NYC, I bought a 2007 with 60,000+ miles as a "certified" car from a Toytota dealer. We immediately started enjoying gas mileage around 50mpg and figured on driving it 200,000 miles or more. I was never notified that Toyota discovered two problems for which they offered extended warranties: (1) failing dash panel instrument cluster (2) ABS brake module failure. Both are extraordinarily expensive to fix. Had I known about these failures, I'd have sold my car before the extended warranties expired.
Needless to say, I had the VERY BAD LUCK to have both of these failures AFTER the extended warranties expired. There was a get-around for the instrument cluster failure (disconnecting the 12V power to allow the computer to reset) but eventually it grew so troublesome in the winter that I had a local mechanic install a used cluster. Even that cost about $1000 because of the extensive dis-assembly required. Then last summer, with 145,000 miles and after replacing the 12V battery (a pain), ABS warning lights came on and the car became completely unsafe to drive. Independent mechanics could not fix this problem or even install a used ABS module because of their inability to deal with the car's computer software. The quoted repair price from a Toyota dealer was $3500. I wrote to Toyota customer service asking for consideration in making the brake repair since I think that they should have recalled the Prius for this safety issue. They refused any kind of help.
All the good words about the legendary reliability of the Prius have proven to be a wishful dream!

Same here. I bought my 2008 Prius 3 weeks ago, 162k. There is a whirring noise underneath the drivers dashboard that occurs every 45 seconds. 2 mechanics say it's the brake actuator and it's supposed to make that noise (no error codes are showing). That noise is maddening. Replacement of this part is $2k, and not even guaranteed to stop that noise.
I hate getting into that effing car now. Taking it to a shop to see if they can install sound deadening under the dash to stop the torture.

If you plan on driving it for the long term you can expect to pay $3000 to $5000 dollars to replace the battery followed by similar amounts to replace the generator. All the money saved on fuel will be spent on long term maintenance. Expect to shell out the big bucks between years 5 through 10. If you must have this model and want to avoid a possibly endless money pit, lease it for the short term or avoid becoming the second or third owner.

The car can run the AC for a bit, using the high-voltage traction battery. When it's power runs low, the gas engine will kick on to recharge the high voltage traction battery. When the AC is on, this takes longer. With the heat on or AC on, the gas engine will come on and off regularly.

My 2008 has 230K and it is still working great with the original hybrid battery pack. Bought the car used with 83K and they had just changed the 12V battery. I changed the 12V battery 2 years ago and have bought several parts including the inverter pump, coolant valve, and spark plugs with PCV valve-- all from Amazon. Just waiting around to change the parts. Replaced the catalytic converter with a Walker OEM replacement (also from Amazon) couple years ago for about $600, which was a fraction of the $2200 the dealership wanted. Cat needed to be replaced due to the MIL with code P0401, and I couldn''t pass state inspection with the light on. These cars are at the age where replacement parts are reasonable and there are a ton of aftermarket parts available for a reasonable price. There are also hundreds of repair videos on YT and the Toyota forums, so it's easy to get advice from people who know. Even if you end up replacing the hybrid battery eventually, the prices for these have gone down and the original packs are often available in salvage yards for $500 or so. There are plenty of vids that show how to diagnose and change out bad cells, so if u r handy with tools and can follow instructions, this is something to consider. There are also reconditioned packs available from small operators that start at $1,000 with a warranty. The drivetrains and hybrid motors have proved to be VERY reliable because it has the legendary Toyota quality. If u have specific questions, hit me up by replying and I'll get back to you within a day or 2.

I bought 2007 Prius in January 156K miles, car sounds like a new, red triangle came out but you can buy those code reader for $50.00 and clear it out in the meanwhile you can search on TH-cam have to repair it. Remember if the car is old u will find more information how to repair by yourself.. dealership they know what they do or repair.

@@plumkey197 After how many miles did your catalytic converter go? Did your inverter coolant pump go? If so after how many miles? What state lets you get the battery packs from the salvage years? Here in NYS (aka New York State) the yards claim they're not allowed to put the cars in the yards with the high voltage batteries still in them.

    • @plumkey197
      @plumkey197 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jcrodhry5217 The red triangle will light up for several reasons, including running out of gas and low voltage from a failing 12V battery. There are also a couple codes set that include "low power" and "voltage below threshold". One of these is a transmission code. A weak 12V battery will cause strange behavior in these cars and the low voltage condition will heat up the wires and circuits, so I would recommend the battery be replaced ASAP. Sometimes the codes are displayed as "current", even after the ECU has determined there is no longer an issue and the CEL has turned off. When my cat was failing, the CEL would come on for a day or two - then turn off. No red triangle or Christmas tree dashboard involved. After a few days, the light would be on again - then off after a few days. The light did this for several cycles and the length of time it stayed on got longer and the time it was off got shorter, until it was on all the time. The car continued to run well and the gas mileage was about the same. but I had to replace the cat so the car could pass state inspection here in Louisiana. In this state, if the CEL is on, you will be told to complete the repairs and come back afterwards. It's no longer possible to disconnect the 12V battery to reset the ECU, and get the inspection immediately after; I got away with that a few times in the late 90's and early 2000's with my Ford Ranger (this Ranger had the CEL on a few months after I bought it with 61,000 miles and it stayed on for several years until I sold the truck), but the officials have wised up to that. Now they wont inspect your vehicle if all of the monitors aren't showing up as "ready" and will just tell you to return in a few days.
