I have a 2013 with 100k on it, my gf has a 2006 with 260k, her brother has a 2008 with 200k, but her stepdad (mechanic) has a 2006 400k!!! Wtf 400k lol!
Hmmm...I've watched several youtube videos on Priuses and was told they're probably the best, most reliable car ever made (the car angel guy). They state they're extremely low cost to maintain (with the exception of the 2010-2015 ones that can have head gasket issues) and can last a long time. Some have said buying them with 200k miles is still a good buy. This video has made me re-think buying one considering the exorbitant replacement part/labor costs you're quoting.
This guy may have got a few through the shop, but please 140k on a Prius is nothing. My 2008 is running strong at 250k and keep it garages for the most part. I hear second generation ones are good for longevity.
Thanks! I have the opportunity to buy a 2005 with 200,000 Miles. All batteries recently replaced by dealer (have paperwork) New Tires, shocks, bulbs and the person changed the oil every 5k and performed the service intervals at dealer. After watching your video I think I am going to pull the trigger, thanks
When people give the advice "you can buy a high mileage Prius as long as its been properly maintained" Your anecdote is exactly what they mean lol. This is the ideal perfect scenario for a used prius. I sure hope you bought it.
Own a well sorted 2003 Jetta TDI using for deliveries and was considering purchasing a 2007 one owner Prius with 160k in the neighborhood for $3k as its replacement. I get the same economy in my Jetta but diesel in my area is $0.90 more expensive than regular. The Prius purchased would have saved me about $55/month ($660/yr) in gas BUT the car was still on the original hybrid battery, needed an a/c evaporator and had a check engine light for small evap leak which they were having challenges resolving. I ultimately passed because the fuel savings paled in comparison to the potential repair costs of a new battery ($2k), dash out evaporator repair ($2k), ABS brake actualtor ($2k).
Combination meter I have issues in cold weather press power button without putting foot on gas open door flip lights 4 times the door light should come on and press the button again. Works almost every time. Lol. Better than huge car payments.
I have a 2011 Prius that I bought used when it was three years old. It has 243k miles on it. Up to this point, it has given me no major issues. Had to finally get brakes at 225k miles and the AC compressor needed replacing a few years ago. In August I left the parking lights on and it had to be jumped. Figuring the original 12v battery would need to be replaced, I had it checked and it showed 100%. I've had very little noticeable decline in mpg (I never got the stellar mpg some people get) so the hybrid batteries are still in relatively good shape. The other day, my mechanic ran diagnostics on it and the only code that came up was C1392. I love the car and this Gen Prius, but know it's going to eventually need major work. It would be great if it could last another six years (150k miles) but I don't think that's going to happen without sinking a ton of money into it. My mechanic thinks I should bail on it now before it does start having problems.
They obviously build them different in the States. The one in your picture has additional headlights for a start. Not available in UK. I have two 2009 mk2 and 2010 mk3. NEITHER have EVER had an issue. The little "trunk" battery is the only factor, so I fitted tails to this battery for a small solar charger so they get a regular trickle. UK taxi versions regularly exceed 200,000 without issue and some have topped 400,000. NOTHING comes close. MPG? mk2 returns 55 running short local trips and the mk3 65 on longer runs with cruise control.
Thank you! Thank you! We have been searching for a used Prius. So many rebuilts that say they have been certified by ICBC. We can move forward a little more confidently.
If you're an idiot and go to the dealership to get a high voltage battery, then yes, you'll pay 5 or 6K. But, there are tons of aftermarket installers who will give you a new one for $2500. You can also replace the battery yourself. Also, I have a 2006 Prius with 170K, and the battery is still going strong. So this video is not exactly accurate.
There are certain years to stay away from, especially the 2010 to 2014. Those were the worst. That looks like you have one of those, so sorry you are having issues. I wouldn't touch one of those years with a 10 foot pole. But I still love the Prius. Just have to get the right one. I had a 2004 and never had one issue.
I got a 2015 Prius and it was the last year of that generation made so Toyota did fix the bugs by then. Even the Pistons & Rings are different from the other years in that same generation. I bought my Prius used and it's got 130k miles with zero issues. I have maintained my car very well.
I bought a used 2015 Prius w/50k miles in January of 2019 and I have had zero issues with that car. Today it's got 133k miles & runs like a champ. I've maintained this vehicle like you wouldn't believe but I do that to all my vehicles. Staying on top of all the preventative maintenance is key to making these cars last.
Really nice content, I was offered to buy a Prius that had more lights on the dashboard than a Christmas tree for “cheap” but your information was really helpful
Great report. How hard is it to do DIY repairs? I've been looking for a 2015 but I didn't know about the head gasket issues. I did one head gasket replacement on an old VW and completely screwed it up.😅
Had a 2008 had 175k on dash but probably was more like 250k because of the display cluster was out a lot. Brake actuator went out tried a junkyard part and then the Transmission went out Now i got 2 gen 3s.
I have a 2013 Prius with 70,000 miles on it. My thought is to change the coolant, transmission fluid and brake fluid at the 100,000 mark as I haven't done it yet. Can you kindly share your thoughts? Thanks
Just picked up a '14 Prius V a couple of weeks ago, after my ancient Elantra was totaled by a Chevy Tahoe who's driver did something stupid. I owned 2 other Prius models (both Gen II) in the last 15 years... and it's so nice to return to a car that is so familiar. I am starting a sinking fund for the battery, which I'm expecting will eventually have issues in spite of a good care record (via Carfax), but for now... loving it!
I would like to purchase a used prius found a 2015 Toyota Prius persona series 33k miles, 1 owner and no accidents. Is this a good purchase I know a battery has a shelf life whether its used or not. Is there a way to check battery life?
Can you please advise me about a prius from 2014 with 66000 miles and clean title and no issues no scratches no paint He asked for 14k Is it a good deal that i will not regret it or no ? Thank you Sir

Im thinking about buying a clean 2012 prius c. 138 k. how reliable is that cvt trans?if that goes out its maga bucks, like the battery! another sour spot is the generator. iv heard from others, that they hardly ever have a problem, but if they do its 6 70 7 grand because you have to remove the whole engine and trans to replace the generator! Whats your take on that? Local mechanics love me! because im a hammer mechanic! if it dodent work i beat it with a hammer!, they dance in circles thinking of how they will take me to the cleaners! I did get advice that stated the prius c has less horse power than the regular prius, its slower, but not known to have the gasket issues! And its common to get 250 t0 300k on them. The way i drive id reach that at 115 years old!
I found a 2007 Prius with 212k miles, for sale by 2nd owner. They have replaced 4 of the HV battery cells. The dash shows the ABS light. She still drives it daily to work. She is asking $2700. I only have an additional $1000 to spend at this time. Should I walk away or could this car continue to be driven while I'm saving for repairs? All comments are appreciated.
Hello, am having issue with my prius gen 2.. my prius has been always charging its Hybrid battery to 6bars every time I use it for trips, yesterday I took it for 1200Km spin , it charged the HV battery to 6bars, then after 200km it never again attained to that level of SOC(6bars)..now it only charge to 4 bars, then once it reaches 4 bars the arrow that shows charge is being fed to battery stops, but when SOC bars become 3bars, the charging arrow comes up again and HV starts to charge to 4bars then stops even at low speed.. but when regenerative braking kicks in the SOC of hybrid battery attain its 6 bars, then after sometime the battery SOC will drop. (depleted) to 4bars...this makes car to use engine power much to run the car and car become inefficient... Kindly sir assist to tell me what might wrong with my car? Note:(no warning light, inverter water pump is working

I have an '05 Prius 143k. I've had gas tank go bad(bladder) then battery. Both extremely expensive. Ended up using a company that installs refurbs for 1.2k and warranty when refurb dies. People say these are extremely dependable but what they don't say is when shit breaks its really going to cost you.
Most reliable, trouble-free car I've ever owned. 2008, 340k original batt
That's where my old one would be now, had it not had a run in with a Nissan Altima who's driver ran a red light.
You have no idea how long I searched for this information.
