    We got "Mr Gimmick" in Scandinavia because our import company "Bergsala" saw the potential in the game and fought for it! We love them for that!

      Sweden is what I'm assuming they're talking about. Not sure about Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland though if those countries ever got Mr. Gimmick!

    Joe, the reason the Yu Yu Hakusho games weren't released here was because those games were made at least 5 years before the manga and anime began localization here. During the localization run, two games of the series were released here: a crappy GBA game, and a mediocre game for the PS2.
    Believe me when I say that its an anime that got a lot of fans from my generation into anime, during their late middle-school early high-school years. It's far more popular than "just some anime", the whole series was released on blu-ray here.

    for those that are interested...
    Gimmick! is on the ps1 it´s part of Sunsoft´s _Memorial Series_ together with Battle Formula.
    So the full title is: *Memorial Series Sunsoft Vol. 6: Battle Formula & Gimmick!*
    oh and it was also only released in japan and it it goes for about 200$ - 250$ nowadays

    I don't know how much Joe is into anime, but Yu Yu Hakusho is great. Joe, if you like anime, and fighting, you really should check it out. It played on adult swim back when they first started their anime Saturdays. It's just over 100 episodes if I'm remembering correctly. Definite similarities to DBZ, but it still has its own identity. And a lot shorter if that's important to you.

    Huh, wow. That Crow-like bird creature in the Mr. Gimmick section (16:00) looks identical to a Leiji Matsumoto character from Space Captain Harlock (Tochiro's pet bird, Mr. Bird) Hmmm!!

    I realize this is really old but, the "spine card" is actually called an OBI, they put them on books, DVDs, LPs, CDs, and most other media in Japan. Their purpose is to display information such as track listing, price, translations, and other basic info. For example, in Japan someone might be buying a Metallica CD, and the OBI would have the band's name and all the songs written in Japanese, plus the price. This is also helpful if an album doesn't have any info at all on it, such as Led Zeppelin's "Houses of the Holy"

    We talked about one of the Cho Anikis in the WTF episode. We prefer using real systems when we can, but obviously we need to use emulation for our arcade episodes so I wouldn't say "hate". But we really do like showing the game running on the real hardware to showcase how it actually looked and sounded. Most emulation isn't perfect even if it seems like it is.

    The way I see it is that if every game from the early 90s was released in the North America and not left in Japan, we wouldn’t discover these incredible games. I think it’s a blessing in disguise. That’s a way to look at things I guess.

    The track used in the Dangerous seed arcade/genesis comparison is Track 15 - "Point of no return" from Eschatos Arrange Tracks album. Just for future reference in anyone else keeps wondering. It confused the hell out of me. It sounded so familiar yet it wasn't from Dangerous Seed.

    Kirbys Dream Land was the most popular game for a long time in Sweden, both kids and parents loved it. I think that's the reason Mr. Gimmick and another "cute" platformer(With a lightblue kirby/gimmick character, don't remember it's title but it was for the Gameboy Color) was only released in Scandinavia because we loved that style and genre.

    Tom Kalinske wasn't Sega of America's CEO after Saturn came out. He resigned shortly after that.
    The real blame for so many 2D games and RPGs never coming over to the west is on Bernard Stolar. His "brilliant" strategy for Saturn was literally "No RPGs and no 2D games". He's the infamous "Saturn is not our future" guy.

    I love the Yu Yu Hakusho game, is one of my favorites, but not for it's regular fights, but because it can handle matches up at for 4 players at the same time, in 2v2 all v all and 3v1. And that's is probably why is so damn fun to play and also the reason why you need a button to block, because you may have an enemy on each side, so holding back woudn't be a good idea.

  • @maxwelsh6121

    360 s latter house does have some fun moments , but it's not great it's pretty good for what it is -pretty simple , that said , it's great to own for the arcade version of the original game that is an easy enough unlockable in the game
    You guys prolly have the dag arcade board already anyway, but if not and fir anyone who doesn't have access to a good mame setup or whatever , then it's a good buy for that reason alone

  • @Tiomasta
    @Tiomasta 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Yu Yu Hakusho game had up to 4 player free-for-all fights (CPU optional), which is what the 2-layer stages are for, and you could also set it for teams, like 2v2 or even 3v1, complete with team-colored palette swaps.
    It has a block button and some weird setups for special moves, like down down, or down up, or down down forward, or just A+B, but it's made so you don't ever need to push back, so you can WALK back, having more freedom in the stage.
    It's kinda like Smash Bros before Smash Bros

    Good old days when I finished Shadow Over Mystara using Cleric with only one coin... Tip: you can pick money by sliding into it (236+jump).
    And Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the greatest fighting anime series in the 90s, it was very popular in Brazil. I liked the Genesis version a lot, since it reminded me of Fatal Fury.

  • @NightSprinter
    @NightSprinter 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shadow over Mystara: Right after the fall of Deimos, it turns out he was controlled by another force. The four adventurers, and two more, go set out to stop her and her plans of reviving a virtually-invincible demon known as "The Fiend".
    Also, both games are coming to PC, Wii-U, PS3, and 360 under the collection name "Chronicles of Mystara" June 18. Will be great for those of us that couldn't afford the Saturn import (and keeps the four player mode).

    As an American now living in Japan, I come across great Japanese exclusives all the time. You might consider playing a series of games for the Super Famicom called Go Go Ackman, 3 action platformers based on a manga/anime series by Akira Toriyama(Dragonball,Dragon Quest), they look good and play very good. Really enjoying this series of vids.

  • @Tiomasta
    @Tiomasta 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, I think it was the first fighting game ever to have supers.
    In this, to use them you gotta have enough meter left and low enough health, which is why the Japanese letters by them start to flash, to tell you that it's ready, so if both are flashing you can do it.
    By the way, you can also find translations for the menus in gamefaqs, if you don't know enough Japanese to get through the menus alive.

  • @MrFacundo7
    @MrFacundo7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very good video but they were wrong about JuJu Hakusho, probably the best fighting games of the 16 bits era. You can play that games with 4 players at the same time!! And the anime is a little bit more adult and more original than Dragon Ball Z

  • @Havamal
    @Havamal 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I reckon that's because they are more accessible to people who are unable to read Japanese. A shooter usually is very short on, or completely devoid of text. Easy to understand the objectives of. And can be beaten in a couple of hours. That makes them easy to pick up and play, even if you can't understand the language.

    The main attack of Pulseman was then used by Gamefreak on Pokemon as an electric move called volt tackle, Mikami the ghost sweeper was a funny show and a lot of kids from the 90's was their first female "sexy" cartoon/anime character you would probably see.

  • @NightSprinter
    @NightSprinter 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave, Joe, feel free to call me a nerd 'bout this, but I can divulge the general story on the two D&D arcade games. Both were set in some place called "Mystara", in a campaign world of some kind TSR put out books for called the "Greyhawk Adventures".
    Tower of Doom: Evil Arch Lich Deimos has ruled Mystara with fear and ransacked the place with monsters. Four adventurers come in and offer to stop Deimos' plans (and if the player wants, can even kill a red dragon on the way).

    It WAS planned to be released to the arcade, and was showcased at trade shows, but the planned release was shelved. I suppose a similar story could be said for the Thunder Force Gold Pack, and Hyper Duel.

Rather than blather on from a Wikipedia source and repeat the same stuff every gamer (import,retro,etc) already knows, you make a show thats concise, and only informative where necesarry. Gaming is about fun, not fabricated nostalgia and useless knowledge. Though guiltily, I do indulge in useless history and knowledge. Keep up the good work dudes!

  • @Tiomasta

    (continuing)
    The game also has a interesting meaningful difference for what button you pick to use special moves, punch or kick. One may reach farther but not be as fast and cost more meter. They also got imaginative and got a THIRD option, which is if you pick the block button, which is why block is there next to punch and kick.
    (also, hold punch or kick to recharge meter)
    Would definetly appreciate if you guys took a second look at the game. The one here by far didn't do enough justice to it.

    I will say that while Splatterhouse for the 360 and PS3 has its flaws, it also has its merits: great voice acting particularly from Jim Cummings who plays the voice of Mask in the game, beat'em up style combat which is monotonous but satisfying at the same time, and it also has an arcade port of the original game along with ports of its sequels which were released on the Genesis.

    God I love retro gaming, it's the best.
    Game sack is king for retro games.
    What was the point of spine cards, what do they do? Is it just a collection thing?
    Great show, love it!!

    We both have that one. It's made by the same company but not really like either of those two beyond that. I kind of got bored with it, actually. Never bothered to play more than a few hours. Amazing graphics, though!

    Gimmick was on PS1 in Sunsoft's last Sunsoft Memorial Series discs. It was like mini NAMCO volumes.

    holy shit Atlus was always so good at their graphics. Princess Crown.. that girl looks exactly like Princess Eclair from La Pucelle Tactics and the item menu/it's animated exactly like Odin Sphere on PS2...*continues watching* oshit you did reference Odin sphere. keep on being awesome.
