Gamecube controller was the best for me, the button placement allowed easy access to all of them when your right thumb was on A and the unique shape helped me remember which button is which with looking at the controller. Its obviously the best, because its still supported 22 years later.
The difference between the PS1 controller and PS2 controller isn't just the colour. Every button (apart from start, select, and analogue) was changed to be analogue meaning the strength with which you used to press the buttons could have an impact. This turned out to be more of a gimick than anything else as not too many games utilised this feature and it was pretty hard to make precision presses.
Racing games use them, the gas button give you more or less acceleration depending on how hard you press them. The L and R triggers could be used to strafe at different speeds.
The Gran Turismo series made use of the analogue buttons also. I hope now that the PS4 controllers face buttons are digital they finally change over to using triggers for accelerator and brake. I can't stand modern racing games that use the face buttons.
everyone seems to forget that there was actually an analogue controller for the PS1 which was released before the dual shock and predated the N64! There wasn't too much difference between it and the dual shock though. The analogue sticks had concave indents, there was no vibration feature and the prongs at the bottom were much longer than the standard design. It also had a weird 3rd mode which I have no clue what it was for but otherwise it was the same as later iterations Dave also hit it perfectly when he said that the gamecube controller works for nintendo games. It's been that way since the N64. The ninty controllers have been designed pretty much by Miyamoto for miyamoto and everyone else has to work around it.
The one thing I'll say for the original Xbox controller, is when I crushed my fingers at work, it was the only controller I could hold without pain while in a cast. For that reason, I really liked it a lot. Still, when the revamped controller came out, my fingers were healed and I switched to that and never went back...
I have to totally agree with Joe. The Saturn had a freaking amazing controller. Playing fighting games on the Saturn was a JOY. It's just unfortunate that it's a game pad that had a very similar problem to the Gamecube contoller; the design of it lent itself to specific game designs. For the Saturn, that meant 'old fashioned' game genres... I can't imagine what it would be like playing the original MGS or Silent Hill on a Saturn gamepad... but man, fighting and twitch gaming? Best pad evar.
I never got into GameCube when it was alive, but actually found a few awesome games recently. The GC controller IMO is hands down the most comfortable and otherwise game fitting console controller I've ever played with.
The Wiimote and Nunchuck combo actually allows right OR left hand analog function or d-pad. So it is quite an simple way of allowing your right thumb to use the analog stick. And, I am not hunched with my two hands converging like typical small controllers, as I can lay my arms relaxed to my sides while playing. Kind of like the keyboard and trackball I use when I PC game on my HDTV. Also, the Kinect controller is easily upgradeable in terms of better battery life.... Looks like Joe and Dave need to upgrade to a six cell pack instead of a one cell pack.
The white Japanese version of the Saturn 3D pad is my favourite controller ever. I've never used the black Western version, but it sounds like it might have different components or something. I actually prefer the slightly looser D-pad to the regular '2D' Saturn pads - the Dreamcast controllers were a big step down for me, unfortunately.
The face buttons for the gamecube are awesome, people don't understand that Nintendo had in mind the button you press most is A so the other buttons are secondary.
Reginald Regency The Gamecube bit in the video is by far the most hilarious part, in hindsight because that's how many of the people who saw my Gamecube would act. Because everyone else in the room was camp Sony or Microsoft, they treated the Gamecube controller like it was otherworldly. Sure the buttons are cheap plastic, but its functionality and longevity are impressive and even the button layout is great (for games that are intended for the Gamecube....)
That would have been a really good idea, actually. Use your original controller, just pop off the cable and pop on a battery-powered transmitter and go!
PS2's biggest addition to the controller was the pressure sensitive buttons. Play something like Gran Turismo 3 and no matter what button you set the gas/brake too, it responds based on how hard you press the button.
I've come from the future to say Retrobit is making a Saturn controller with dual analogue. Finally. It's the total package. May have extra shoulder buttons too, not sure.
Am I the only one that feels the DualShock controller was awesome. I know the dimensions haven't changed but that's why I loved it. Comfortable and familiar.
Carl N Yeah it's a nice controller, and the subtle refinements nly make it more comfortable. I'd take the Xbox controller over it for Sports/FPS but the Dualshocks d pad is lightyears above anything
That *standard* Playstation controller layout is, for me too, almost perfect - it just fits my hands so brilliantly, and that includes the PS4 too. I like the Xbox design, and it's comfy and practical, but the Playstation design is just *perfect* for me... :-)
Carl N I personally just found it to be not the most comfortable, however I do like the ps1-ps2 dualshock a decent bit, a lot of memories. However the Dualshock 3 was awful I mean the triggers mostly.
I’ve always preferred the duel shock d pad for fighting games. It’s better than all 32 bit controllers. I like the Saturn controller a little better because of the button layout, but I don’t prefer the d pad. Sony’s d pad with sega 6 face buttons would of been my ideal controller.
I found you guys through your Sega Saturn video, as I'm starting to collect for Sega consoles and the video taught me about TONS of games I didn't know about. I LOVE this channel. Every episode is informative and entertaining and I absolutely love the Nintendo vs. Sega schtick. Amazing content guys!
My favorite is the Saturn Model 2 controller, as well as the original Xbox Controller, and in 3rd place the Game Cube controller. I love the Saturn 2nd model controller, the only controller I felt was better than the Sega Genesis 6-button controller. I also loved the original Xbox Controller with it's 6 buttons including black and white and the way they were arranged. And really it's size was comparable to the Dreamcast and N64 controllers. (I just wish it was more durable) My 3rd favorite was the GameCube controller, despite looking like a Fisherprice toy, the buttons were both distinct and close allowing for quick responses, and very comfortable. My 4th favorite is the 3DO controller, I thought it merged the best qualities of the Sega Genesis 3 button controller with the Super Nintendo Controller, resulting in something a bit better than either. A fair warning for the 3DO controller is it looks like you could interchange it for old Sega and Atari controllers, or even old Coleco Vision, or Commodore-Amiga computer controllers... while you can switch all those other controllers around in each other system, trying that with the 3DO controller can damage either the controller or game system. I was OK with the Dreamcast controller, I felt it wasn't perfect, it looked nice, I liked the VMUs. I didn't care for the 4 button lay out, and the analog stick didn't seem as nice as many of the other controllers before or after. I was ok with the D-pad. It looked nicer than the Saturn analog controller, and felt better shaped for human hands, but I'd rather have the 6-buttons of the Saturn version. I liked it more than the competition on the Playstation or N64, but I wished it still had the Saturn 6 button lay out. A lot of times when playing Phantasy Star Online I wished I had at least 2 more buttons. I was neutral to the Playstation controllers, I considered them good enough, but nothing too special. I didn't like the Super Nintendo set up with the 4 buttons that felt more widely spaced than most better 3 and 6 button controllers. I like the Xbox 360 controller a bit more than the Playstation controllers, but I was still ambivalent towards the similar 4 button set up. Personally I HATED the Nintendo 64 controller, even when a game developer found a useful control set up for it's crazy design, as many just came up with convoluted ways to use it, it was very uncomfortable, and left my hands feeling cramped and uncomfortable. For something so large, holding it made my finger feel quite cramped and uncomfortable after long periods, it was just not a nice shape . I never had an N64 analog stick completely break, but I've seen them come loose and wobble and bit after a lot of usage. Didn't mention the less comfortable original Saturn controller that came out as the very 1st version of the Saturn controller. That one was very uncomfortable. Not nearly as good as the one showed in this video. It had all the right buttons, but felt horribly crappy. I hated the Xbox controller S, while the original Xbox controller fit my hands great, and the button lay out allowed for fast reaction, the newer Controller S annoyed me when hitting varrious button combinations I found it unavoidable to accidentally hit the black and white buttons with my hand. I like the Xbox 360 controller, but greatly preferred the original Xbox controller with it's arrangement of the 6 buttons closer and better aligned together on front. I never cared for the Wii Controllers, when ever possible I'd just use the Game Cube Controller, I don't mind the Classic Wii Control pad it's OK but nothing special.
"Function over form." Yes. The Wavebird is my personal favorite gaming controller of all time, so I'm glad to see another person appreciate it as much as I did. I remember being in 6th grade, waiting patiently for the controller to arrive in the mail. Weeks later, it finally arrived and that shit took my gaming to a whole new level; literally.
Albeit without rumble, which every single one of your gaming friends was enjoying. This is the only thing that makes me use a regular controller most of the time.
Much love to the Saturn 3D controller. I used it all the time when playing fighting games. The 6 button layout was a dream, like a mini arcade cabinet! Just put your thumb under the the right side grip and your fingers line up for the buttons. Personally, Alpha/Zero 2 and 3 and Darkstalkers got LOTS of mileage because of this controller's design.
While I agree the GameCube has a weird look, it's without a doubt on of the most comfortable controllers I ever held! And honestly, I find the N64 controller comfortable as well but no where near as comfortable than the GC
11:47 The original xbox controller has a sad face. Just imagine the start and select buttons are the eyes, and you will see the sad face. I guess it is sad because of too much complaint. Poor controller :(
"Now we have this battery compartment on the back. It takes 2 triple A batteries. Who knows what this thing is for?" Well, I'm going to go ahead and guess it's for storing rice.
I kind of agree with this. I'd like it if the Saturn shoulder buttons had more give, say like the SNES shoulder buttons. Then it'd be perfect. But it's still damn awesome as it is.
I was wondering what color GameCube to buy I've never owned one, or let me know what's your favorite. Indigo - Cool because it's original Black - Matches most homes decor Platinum - look's a little cheep and feels like the paint will rub off Orange Spice - my fave but doesn't count because it was never released over here
Dual-Shock 2 did have one significant advantage over the original Dual-Shock. All buttons (other than start/select/L3/R3) are analog/pressure-sensitive. That was huge for a lot of games, e.g. driving games. Dual-Shock 4 is pretty much faultless, but i doubt it's got the longevity of the older controllers. Dual-Shock 2 was like the Nokia 3310 of controllers, built like a tank.
I actually managed to break a DualShock 2 by having it drop on the ground. It was massively annoying, given that Gran Turismo 4 was the game I played most and the analogue buttons on it were used for acceleration/braking, which couldn't be done using the original DualShock controllers I had.
You must have been using a cheap 3rd party knock-off because the real Saturn pad feels very sturdy and it doesn't just break. I've never had the MODE button break on a Genesis 6B controller, either. Some of the Majesco Genesis 6B controllers which came with systems like the Genesis 3 (which Majesco also distributed) were really bad. Majesco sucks.
People keep forgetting the point of the Gamecube shoulder buttons...They have 2 buttons in each. They're analog, with the initial presses being 1 button, but when you push all the way past the resistance point, it's a 2nd input. It was designed to have the use of both an L1/L2 & R1/R2 button in one (kind of like modern analog sticks can click down for a 2nd input). Try it in Rogue Leader, Rouge Squadron 2. It opens and closes the X-Wing's 4 wings, allowing for different flight options. It has many uses in games, but many developers opted not to incorporate the functionality. People often forget that. Most shoulder buttons before then were digital only (and for some reason Nintendo with the Wii U & Switch went BACK to using digital triggers/shoulder buttons).
I wish you did 3rd party controllers in a video. I had the Interact SuperPad 64 (look it up on Amazon since I can't post a link here). It put all the controls in a more "traditional" gamepad style and eliminated the middle grip, which made the whole system a lot more playable to me. Of course, I didn't buy extra copies so my friends were stuck with the crappy original controller, but so what? :)
You guys make my days so muchh fun! I love to see your videos. Please, keep the great work. Joe, I love how you talk about Nintendo's things, you act (or not) a SEGA fanboy so well. Dave is the best Nintendo fan boy ever. He understands the others companies, even enjoy them, but Nintendo is ever better than them. hahahahah TY guys.
I personally really liked the Dreamcast controller, although right now I gotta say my favorite controller is a toss up between it, the Wii U Gamepad and the Xbox One controller. Not that the Dualshock 4 isn't bad, it's better than other sony controllers, at least to me since I'm not a huge fan of Sony controllers.
Somehow I get the idea that a Game Sack movie or game would be both shovelware and a masterpiece at the same time. 220+ episodes and we still haven’t gotten one :(
2 Things i have to correct 1. The dual shock 3 has analog L2 and R2 buttons not like the DS1 and DS2 wich had digital L2 and R2 buttons 2. The move controler is waaaaaaay more accurate then the wiimote and some of the sports games are pretty fun like the gladiator fighting in sports champions
I honestly don't see the issues with the Dreamcast Controller, I have been using the controller for a long time now since I got my dreamcast back in 2011 and I didn't really find any issues with the D-Pad or the Analog Stick that you mention. I can see your point on the hard plastic with the D-Pad, but it really doesn't slice my thumbs when I use it.
I have been playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 with the D-Pad almost all the time and my thumbs never got cut or bleed during the hours I put on that game. I will agree that the plastic is hard, but it doesn't really slice into my thumbs.
I loved the Gamecube controller for 1 reason. Access to multiple buttons at once. This is most apparent in Soul Calibur. By placing the A button in the center, it can easily be pressed with the same thumb with any other face button. The Y also shares this position, thus giving the player 5 combinations that are easy to press with a single thumb. All other 4 faced button layouts limit the player to only 4 combinations.
Controllers I like (in no particular order): Playstation 1, 2, 3 and 4, XBOX 360, Saturn, Mega Drive/Genesis (six button), SNES and NES. Controllers I dislike (with explanations): The original XBOX controller: Many of the games were better suited to four shoulder buttons, and because of the lackluster d-pad and face button orientation it wasn't good for fighting games either. Saturn 3D pad: I only vaguely remember using it. From memory my impressions were that it was bulky and just a bit odd. I also seem to remember disliking the analogue stick position. I'd need to try one again to form a solid opinion. The N64 controller: Nasty feeling analogue stick that by its very design destroys itself quickly. Also the layout didn't seem to make good use of all the buttons. If you were holding the handle with the analogue stick and the Z trigger, the d-pad and L button wasn't accessible and vice versa. I much preferred the Playstation controller's analogue sticks and layout. Also if N64 emulation ever becomes more hassle free than it is today (with using different plugins or emulators for particular games) it means using other controllers will feel odd and nobody has released a good USB one with a decent analogue stick (I will not buy used controllers so hunting down a Hori and an adapter is a no-go). The many crappy joysticks I owned for the Amiga: Having to buy a new controller what seemed like every three months gets really annoying.
+buzzboy 24 No experience with them sadly. My social life was more active back then so I only had a limited amount of time to play. After the PS1 and N64 I got a PS2 and that was my main (then current gen) console. I ended up getting an XBOX second hand for cheap right towards the end of its life cycle. Most of the games I have for it now I back bought after it had been discontinued.
Yeah I had two of those and traded them for the model two controllers. I don't think that they deserve as much hate as some people give them but I have to wonder why they even bothered to change the design from the Japanese pad which was just like the model 2 pad. The d-pad felt pretty weird!
Just watch this video... Still wonder why no one make something similar to Saturn Pad ever again? That one is the god send for fighting game... arguably better than arcade stick in some situation.
There are some minor details you left out like the Dualshock 2 having all analog buttons, a "flight" IIRC Dualshock 1 with a green led... But other than that, it's a great job! I like that you even mentioned the 3DO. The transatlantic sized Xbox controller review was hilarious! Keep it up!
My favorite controller of all time is the Xbox 360 controller. Dreamcast is a close second. Worst for me is probably the PS2/3 because of the analogue sticks position, and terrible D-pad. Pre-32 bit would be the NES or Atari 2600 joystick, simplicity! I can't think of a terrible designed pre-32 bit controller that I ever used.
N64 controller was perfect for 3D games, especially FPS. The C buttons stands for "camera" obviously, Mario 64 uses them exactly how they are displayed (left, right, bottom and top). Turok used them as in a QWSD keyboard, and the stick as the mouse. Just awesome !
It's fascinating how the PS Move section aged. Not only would Game Sack go on to make it very clear in later years that the PS Move had same very good games for it, but the entire assessment of the Move in this video is pretty much the opposite of what Game Sack later game to view it as.
Very cool segment. I was actually expecting the opening to have been you guy pulling controllers out of the sack instead of using an existing opening. Still very informative.
Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but it's surprising you forgot the fact some buttons on the PS2 controller had pressure-sensitivity (shoulder buttons as well as the four action buttons). Some games actually utilized the feature heavily (The Bouncer, and especially Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 for holding up enemies with a gun). Same with the original xbox controller (same deal with MGS).
The D-pad really degenerated into some kind of 6th toe appendage on a lot of systems. The Game Cube one is so small, indented, and diminished which is amazing since Nintendo debuted the Cross Pad on the NES. The Wii cross pad was at least a decent return back to normal. Xbox-OG was decent but 360 screwed it up with stilt-based switches. Playstation's D-pad is okay, not bad but hardly a favorite. Dreamcast D-pad, so sad. T_T
The fishing controller was used on numerous fishing games here in Japan. Not just two. Maybe you guys didn't get them? The xbox controller we got originally is the S version. We never had the giant one.
Crazy Taxi works with the Fishing Controller (so does Virtua Tennis 1). Crazy taxi is fun with it. You need to rotate the reel to accelerate and when you cast, you will get a boost. Hard and tiring, but funny.
Ah, the classic Saturn S pad. I concur, that was my favorite controller ever made. I absolutely love that controller, it's the best controller for fighting games by far, at least IMO. (I never did get good with the arcade pad/joysticks) If I could play modern fighting games with it, on modern systems, I would. The Xbox 360 controller is the best modern controller available, except maybe the Wii U gamepad and/or pro controller. Those are also very good (pro controller is virtually identical to the 360 controller) just wish they had analog triggers.
Yeah, I suspect Joe probably doesn't want to remember that one so much. :P Unfortunately, all I have for my Saturn is the original controller and the 3D one. Though I did see a model 2 Saturn for £50 in a retro game store yesterday which I'm considering partly for the controller and partly to have a 2nd console I can safely get modded so it can reach it's full potential with access to NTSC games.
I did indeed, although it wasn't without issues. Something was wrong with the AV Output which led to many more combing artefacts than I got from my original, so its mainly just boxed. I instead tracked down a modded JP Saturn model 1 and since the internal power supplies were compatible, swapped my original 220v supply with its 100v supply, so now I have a modded JP Model 1 Saturn that works directly with UK voltages.
@@BrySkye that's awesome man. Im jealous. I live in the US but i just want a saturn period have since I was 10 yrs old in 1996. Prob gonna purchase one real soon
To me, the best most comfortable controller would be the 360 controller. It's no contest for me. The form is great and more importantly, super comfortable. The Wavebird for the Gamecube might be my second along with the Xbox S controller, but really, that's not too much different from the 360 one lol Wish I could say my favorite console the N64 had the best controller, but eh...The analog did have some issues and not quite the best design.
The DualShock 2 and 3 both had analogue face and shoulder buttons; it was slightly different to the original DualShock. Few games used the analogue buttons, but in those that do (e.g. the Gran Turismo games), they can be very useful.
Wow Thanks for the effort guys. Not a lot of youtubers remake their vids for us Germans. For those who ask why the episode was banned: there's an organization (called "GEMA") over here that manages the rights of musicians in Germany, no matter if they're national or international. Every time a song is played publicly, which a youtube vid is, you owe them money. Since youtube refuses to pay (saying they only host the vid) GEMA can block it. Every vid with a popular song in it gets blocked.
My favorite controllers of this era are: 3. Xbox 360 remote 2. PSX/PS2 remotes 1. Gamecube (Standard/Wavebird) The Gamecube remote is so comfortable and natural feeling. Any game was easy to control cause of the weird but easy to use button configuration.
I don't really like the wii remote and nunchuk combo either, it kind of brings down the experience of playing some really great wii games. The wire gets in the way
For shame on you reviewers: Dualshock 2 had an analogue d-pad and buttons. Sixaxis lost those analogue buttons and the rumble and replaced it with the sensor and stupidly concave analogue triggers. Dualshock 3 is the best combination of the SIxaxis and first Dualshock, rumble and all.
And dualshok 4 needs a replacement to get the analog buttons back as it was before... I personally play with my dualshock 3 as much as I can because it feels like the best controller I can find !
Gamer365 Review = a critical appraisal of something. Reviewer = someone who does just that. You must be new to this channel because that's exactly what these guys do amongst retrospectives. They got a good channel so I think they should keep up their level of quality. Either that or maybe you're just a passionate fan, one who is too quick with your vitriol that it becomes a detriment to yourself.
Geir Eivind Mork Sure, however, I don't understand why they've gone back from analog buttons, which were still used... I also adapted triggers so they feel better (should have mentioned that)
This is the only episode I haven't watched to this point. I thought an episode about controllers would be boring, but this episode had that trademark Game Sack humor that I love. Great job! I am dying to know what song was in the original. Banned in Germany? Was it a song from one of Cannibal Corpse's first three albums?
I always thought it was really weird how the cable can disconnect from the Saturn's analog pad... I never even noticed that when I first owned a Saturn during its proper lifecycle. I wonder why it was like that... were they going to release some sort of wireless controller addon? Ooooh, how awesome would that be, a modern bluetooth addon for that controller... I can dream, right?
Would really have liked to see the Namco controllers for Ps1. I've always wanted to get my hands on a NegCon, they seem so weird. I used to have the JogCon, which was basically a PS1 controller but with a huge rotating disc on the front, for driving games. So unique.
That Original Xbox controller (before the redesign) is usually called "The Duke", and for whatever reason, I've always preferred The Duke over the Controller "S", in fact, I think It's still my favourite controller ever! Still own the same one I got in 2001!
Dave forgot to mention that the DualShock 2 has pressure sensitive buttons. A really "big" feature for some games (Like Metal Gear Solid 3 and its CQC moves.)
I was a Nintendo fanboy on my childhood... but on recent years I did some research on SEGA products and I have admit that I'm starting to love them!!! specially my Dreamcast, great show!
Gamecube controller was the best for me, the button placement allowed easy access to all of them when your right thumb was on A and the unique shape helped me remember which button is which with looking at the controller. Its obviously the best, because its still supported 22 years later.

Zone of the Enders 1 and 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. Only games *I* can think of that used the pressure sensitive face buttons
THEGREATMAX I'm pretty sure Oni on PS2 made use of all of the analogue buttons. Shame it was a dull game.
The Gran Turismo series made use of the analogue buttons also. I hope now that the PS4 controllers face buttons are digital they finally change over to using triggers for accelerator and brake. I can't stand modern racing games that use the face buttons.

No PlayStation analog flight stick? It didn't get much support, but playing the PlayStation version of Descent with it really made the game memorable.
This episode was originally released on July 2011 and then re-edited to remove a flagged song and re-uploaded in June 2012.
(I just wish it was more durable)
My 3rd favorite was the GameCube controller, despite looking like a Fisherprice toy, the buttons were both distinct and close allowing for quick responses, and very comfortable.
"Function over form."
Yes.
You guys are awesome and very informative. Personally, I cannot wait until you do an episode about N64.
the gamecube controller is comfortable as fuck and is my all time favorite
Poor controller :(
I wish I had the time to make custom openings for each episode. I can only do it sometimes. :)
"Now we have this battery compartment on the back. It takes 2 triple A batteries. Who knows what this thing is for?"
Well, I'm going to go ahead and guess it's for storing rice.
Omitted to mention that the 3DO has a super long cord. Plus earphone jack Within the controller which is pretty Kick-Ass to me.!!!
Indigo - Cool because it's original
Black - Matches most homes decor
Platinum - look's a little cheep and feels like the paint will rub off
Orange Spice - my fave but doesn't count because it was never released over here
Dual-Shock 2 did have one significant advantage over the original Dual-Shock.
The gamecube controller is really well made. Actually one of my favorite controllers
It cracked me up when you two started dancing around . Very funny
8:23 lol drinking out of the sink mean while he has to take a piss!
2021.... how come we still haven't got a all Kinect episode? That lil segment was great!
Agreed, the [Japanese] Saturn gamepad is the BEST controller of all time!
Awesome, glad you're enjoying the show!
Gamecube controller so underrated.
The original PlayStation controller was and still is my all time favorite. It just felt so right on your hands.
220+ episodes and we still haven’t gotten one :(
That was the Saturn US controller. Don't have any early ones, though. Got rid of them to get these.
Sega Saturn MK2 gamepad is the best ever made for 2D games, and fighting games, that gamepad is awesome.
That akuma ps2 fighting controller looks cool. I never knew that existed. Me and my brother actually have a red one of that with ryu
2 Things i have to correct
1. The dual shock 3 has analog L2 and R2 buttons not like the DS1 and DS2 wich had digital L2 and R2 buttons
Same here, don't get that criticism at all...
its bad, your thumb will start bleeding after a few hours of street fighter. best to tape it up before you start playing or get a arcade stick.
I have been playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 with the D-Pad almost all the time and my thumbs never got cut or bleed during the hours I put on that game. I will agree that the plastic is hard, but it doesn't really slice into my thumbs.
Saturn controller is God. PS1. Dual Shock is second as God King. DreamCast felt and looked weird but it was very responsive.
w00t! I never saw this episode before! It's like a whole new thing for me! Best Monday ever!
Thanks! Hang in there for a few more weeks, it's on its way.
Controllers I dislike (with explanations):
The original XBOX controller: Many of the games were better suited to four shoulder buttons, and because of the lackluster d-pad and face button orientation it wasn't good for fighting games either.
What do you think of the Dreamcast and GameCube controllers?
+buzzboy 24 No experience with them sadly. My social life was more active back then so I only had a limited amount of time to play.
After the PS1 and N64 I got a PS2 and that was my main (then current gen) console. I ended up getting an XBOX second hand for cheap right towards the end of its life cycle. Most of the games I have for it now I back bought after it had been discontinued.
napalmhardcore ok.
Huge fan of the series, keep up the amazing work, I'm not really into rpg games but I like the back and forth u both have.
Dreamcast VMU was the best thing! Picking your plays while playing football against a friend (NFL 2K1) was a prime example of its use.
Saturn and Gamecube are easily my two favorites ever
It's fascinating how the PS Move section aged. Not only would Game Sack go on to make it very clear in later years that the PS Move had same very good games for it, but the entire assessment of the Move in this video is pretty much the opposite of what Game Sack later game to view it as.
The Wiiu's gamepad existed in the month this video was uploaded. It just wasn't released yet.
maybe the video was made a month before it was uploaded
Never tried it, actually. Though it looked like a regular joystick to me so the name "virtua" always puzzled me,
Ah, the classic Saturn S pad.
An episode on Arcade sticks/ fight pads?
That green N64 pad is actually SO good.
You didn't include the original Saturn controllers!
Yeah, I suspect Joe probably doesn't want to remember that one so much. :P
Unfortunately, all I have for my Saturn is the original controller and the 3D one. Though I did see a model 2 Saturn for £50 in a retro game store yesterday which I'm considering partly for the controller and partly to have a 2nd console I can safely get modded so it can reach it's full potential with access to NTSC games.
@@BrySkye I hope you bought it
I did indeed, although it wasn't without issues.
You guys are great! I love video games, especially Sega, but I also love your Nintendo and arcade coverage. Colorado rules, btw, live here myself
My favorite controllers of this era are:
3. Xbox 360 remote
2. PSX/PS2 remotes
1. Gamecube (Standard/Wavebird)
The Gamecube remote is so comfortable and natural feeling. Any game was easy to control cause of the weird but easy to use button configuration.
+moviemetalhead I agree with gamecube controller being at number 1
i thought an episode about controllers would be horrible i was wrong nice work
I look forward to a sequel to this. Ps4 vs. xbone vs. WiiU vs. steambox vs. Ouya/fireTV/gamestik controllers?
I don't really like the wii remote and nunchuk combo either, it kind of brings down the experience of playing some really great wii games. The wire gets in the way
We do, every two weeks!
Sure thing! We did it a few months before this episode I think. :)
For shame on you reviewers:
Dualshock 2 had an analogue d-pad and buttons.
Where does it ever mention it's a review?
Gamer365 Review = a critical appraisal of something. Reviewer = someone who does just that. You must be new to this channel because that's exactly what these guys do amongst retrospectives. They got a good channel so I think they should keep up their level of quality. Either that or maybe you're just a passionate fan, one who is too quick with your vitriol that it becomes a detriment to yourself.
ThePEagle That is a matter of preference, because I find the DS4 to be leauges ahead of the DS3 in anything except battery life.
Geir Eivind Mork Sure, however, I don't understand why they've gone back from analog buttons, which were still used...
I also adapted triggers so they feel better (should have mentioned that)
The Gamecube is definitely the most confortable controller i ever held, the analog stick is the best on the market.
That's something I really admire about Playstation, their controller is damn near perfect as it is, so why ever change it?
This is the only episode I haven't watched to this point. I thought an episode about controllers would be boring, but this episode had that trademark Game Sack humor that I love. Great job! I am dying to know what song was in the original. Banned in Germany? Was it a song from one of Cannibal Corpse's first three albums?
Maybe you guys should do an episode on third party controllers.
The GameCube controller is comfortable as fuck
The XBox 360 controller is good, but I agree that I hate the D Pad. I thought I was alone in that.
While I don't have a 360, I have used a controller for it. I can agree that it is all good except for the d-pad.
So unique.
The balance board was used in Punchout! Really fun to play with it.
Dreamcast, N64, Saturn Analog Controller, Jaguar, Gamecube and PS1 Controller (not dualshock).
I was a Nintendo fanboy on my childhood... but on recent years I did some research on SEGA products and I have admit that I'm starting to love them!!! specially my Dreamcast, great show!
This video is hilarious love the sound effects too.
