I mean you're not wrong. LOL.. The old phrase "knowing is half the battle" definitely applies but if I can help a few people expand their knowledge by showing this, then it was worth it!
I REALLY appreciate seeing this video since the Walmart setup is about what I could afford...and did buy. So you've given me the faith that I'm not wasting my time. The car is a 2006 that probably has never had paint correction, although the clear coat is still completely intact.
I bought the larger 9-10" DA from Walmart. Just under $30. Used the Turtle Wax compound and polish as well, had a Lexus with severe hazing and swirl marks. The DA is... okay. I'd say the results I got, which were outstanding, are more of a testament to the Turtle Wax compound/polish than the DA. But I agree, for DIY and under $40, the results were night-and day, brought the luster and shine back to the paint.
You had me at $3000 gloss meter!! this is a fun real world type video. I'd be interested in how many panels the WM product would do before failure.......but at that price point ONE CAR makes it reasonable. Good stuff Scott.......
I used to do it all by hand on my '94 Mazda..but then I had it X-Koted (clear coated)..now I need to revitalize the dingy age..This may be something I can use to help with the process... Thx for your vid..!
Great review. I used that same polisher for years on my personal cars. I can’t complain, for $20+ bucks. The pads that come with it are the negative part, cheap and don’t last. 2+ years ago, I did upgrade to a Griot’s polisher. Much Better pads and way easy to control is the big plus. BTW, I still use the cheap one for projects around the house. It’s a workhorse.
I don’t know if you read comments to old vids, but thanks for this. I’m a newb on paint correction. I’m an older guy and really should have learned how to do this years ago. I’m going to watch more of your vids and then go attempt to work on my cars. I have a 95 one owner ranger I bought new and it would benefit. I also have an 06 Land Cruiser that needs some paint love. I buy vehicles and drive them forever.
Walmart has a surprising good PLATINUM 6" DUAL ACTION POLISHER that has 6 speeds for $70 and each pad costs around $7 with 3 different densities available.
Interesting comparison....I suspect the person spending 20 dollars on the walmart orbital isn't going to have the years of technique you have perfected and would probably oversaturate the MF bonnet and wouldn't be accomplishing these results with it though. I'd say this is more a showcase of how experience, even with inferior tools, and get acceptable results.
I'd agree: but that just makes it feel that much more like one of those videos where they give a musician and entry level instrument, or an artist cheap crayons from the grocery store and tell them to make something out of it, and it always comes out great because their years of experience matter that much more than the equipment they're using. Just goes to show you that you don't have to have expensive stuff, or a dedicated facility with fancy pressure washers and air compressor setups and lighting to do a professional level job on your car. You just need to know what you're doing and understand the process well enough to acclimate yourself to the tools that you have. I'd say it's even more encouraging to those who don't necessarily have the budget for most of the things that TH-camrs tend to cover on a regular basis. This kind of tears down the barrier of entry to the point where anyone can see themselves doing this kind of work if they put the time and effort into it.
As a person who spent $10 on a harbor freight orbital and oversaturated the bonnet and ended up with no improvement whatsoever, youre absolutely right. Im gonna try again this weekend
For sure. Did it by hand when I was broke, this is a much better alternative! Great test. By the way, since the cheap compound/polish seemed to do a good job, what are your thought on using those with a proper machine in a professional setting?
Great vid! I have a walmart polisher. Mine has variable speed and is a random orbital. I don’t have a lot of buffing experience but I plan on attempting this on my Corvette today 😅. I have Megs ultimate compound and the Turlte wax compound in the garage right now. I’m leaning towards the turtle wax or would you go Ultimate?
bit.ly/3ZPz8VU for the gloss meter. They likely do not have any fillers in them, but I did IPA wipe both sides of the hood before showing the final results, and again before I applied the sonax at the end. I don't think I filmed the first IPA wipe.
When someone does a wax job on their car, they can go out and buy the most expensive buffer on the shelf, but if they don’t pick a good brand-name compound and wax to use, it would have been better to buy the-cheapest buffer with a good brand-name wax and compound, they would get a better wax job
Been wanting to get a quality cordless DA but can't get past all the damn noise they make. I guess I may get a buffer. Wish they would make more powerful buffers.
The Walmart polisher was painfully slow and I wouldn't know what to do with my other hand while using it 🤣 It's like the 'polishing pads' that you can get for an electric drill. I wonder what results you would have got on something like hard VW paint. Interesting video Scott, well done.
It is!!! 6 speed manual transmission. My wife and I bought it new in 2013 - went to a dealer in Dallas that had like 600 something Accords on hand and they had TWO manual transmission models - the base model and this one (sport model which is almost a base model).
@@ScottHD Nice! The manuals are so worth it. Back when I was looking for a 550i I could only find one in the country that was manual. A one way flight to Virginia and a beautiful drive back to Texas made me fall in love with that car.
Dont you use something like an IPA or Prep spray to remove polishing oils, fillers and stuff like that before comparing the two sides? Maybe I missed it. But I only see you using it at the end.
Hey there! Appreciate your video! So I tried buffing with the same exact tools, except I only used the Turtle Wax Polishing Compound. When I took the polisher off my vehicle, the polish felt dry and didn't just wipe off with a microfiber cloth like I saw in your video. Is that the correct result, or did I mess something up? Thank you!
No this test should be re done on a car with paint that is not in such good condition. Altho this is a high milage vehicle the car has obviously been very cared for .
It takes some real guts to challenge your life's work with a bargain basement approach. Of course your work gets a bit more complex than polishing 10y old a Honda!
That Wal-Mart must be on the United States 🇺🇸 because over here on Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 its a crap they don't have much choices when it comes to auto accessories
Yeah, I’ve watched videos in the past, but I don’t know this one just kind of caught me by surprise because I’m looking at the car in the hood you chose to do your test and the hood didn’t look bad at all. I didn’t see swirls I didn’t see scratches. so I would say get a black hood with a lot of scratching a lot of marring and a lot of swirls do the test again because this was a waste of a 15 minute video in my opinion, and I didn’t prove anything oh yeah and please do something about the audio in your videos. I mean you’ve been doing these videos for at least over 10 years and you still don’t got the right audio in the video could be better to man come on 2024 we can do better. ✌🏼 out 🐶
Basically any tool is a professional tool in the hands of a professional

Agreed. If you can do one car with it, it's MORE than paid for itself.
That's a well stocked Walmart! The one I go to usually has half empty shelves!
Small town - Lindale, Texas. Usually have to go at the right times (not on a weekend)
I was thinking the EXACT same thing and I’m in Elgin (small Texas town) so thumbs up 👍 to your WalMart

Fair point indeed. Also proving it IS possible. It did take quite a bit more time just due to the lack of power and low speed.
I'd agree: but that just makes it feel that much more like one of those videos where they give a musician and entry level instrument, or an artist cheap crayons from the grocery store and tell them to make something out of it, and it always comes out great because their years of experience matter that much more than the equipment they're using. I actually have that polisher. I use it for quick work. Sometimes, with a spray wax. It's a good (excuse) to go outside.
As a person who spent $10 on a harbor freight orbital and oversaturated the bonnet and ended up with no improvement whatsoever, youre absolutely right. Im gonna try again this weekend
If money was super tight, would you use this to polish your car to get it looking better?
For sure. Did it by hand when I was broke, this is a much better alternative!
Great test.
By the way, since the cheap compound/polish seemed to do a good job, what are your thought on using those with a proper machine in a professional setting?
Yep!
Lol! Love it. You won't find content like this on Esoteric Car Care. 🤣🕺
Fair point!
@@ScottHD they should slap a "Scott HD says: Holy Crap It Works!" on the box. 🤣

I'm planning to try it on my mustang gt. How did it go with you? could you finish the whole car with it or it broke half way? haha
My gooodness this chanel is amazing, such a great quality content, thanks, definitely like and subscribe
'Impressive' - Darth Vader. Mahalo for the great vid!
Good job...some old waxes like turtle wax paste still last longer than anything on the market ..easier & faster dont always mean better
That's awesome!! Thanks for doing this. But for us OCD folks, we want that extra oomph!
Agreed... a time vs money comparison, you save a lot of money, but takes a LOT of time.
Beautiful Portuguese Water Dog . 👍👀
We also use meguiars or mothers clay bar, like to now use Griots complete compound and polish
Nice one Scott. Any chance those cheaper polishes have fillers in them? Also, what gloss meter is that pls?
bit.ly/3ZPz8VU for the gloss meter. They likely do not have any fillers in them, but I did IPA wipe both sides of the hood before showing the final results, and again before I applied the sonax at the end. I don't think I filmed the first IPA wipe.
@@ScottHD thx mate
I wish you could put the gloss machine on paint after you put the last product on.
Those turtle wax products would turn out good results even by hand
LOL nice! I might buy that polisher :)
SOLD….at the “kickstand” 😂
Is that a Bern-a-doodle? My dog looks just like that.
It is! Lulu is a 2 year old Bernedoodle!
Thank you. 😁👍
I'm betting Eric Clapton could take a guitar off the shelves at that same Walmart and wow a bunch of guitar fanatics too!

This video helped a lot ! Curious to see how 3d one would do

I wonder what results you would have got on something like hard VW paint.
Interesting video Scott, well done.
I bet on the harder paint it would probably do it, but it would be hating life... would take significantly longer.
That wouldn't happen to be a manual gearbox preservation society sticker, would it? hahaha awesome video man!
It is!!! 6 speed manual transmission. My wife and I bought it new in 2013 - went to a dealer in Dallas that had like 600 something Accords on hand and they had TWO manual transmission models - the base model and this one (sport model which is almost a base model).

The Honda soft paint surely had an impact. Should try a hood with a harder clear coat maybe…
Great idea - I need to schedule a non-metallic black Audi in here!
Would you say this is a good buy if I try this on my golf vw? I think it works very well on smaller cars?
5:59 this tool is 3 bands?
Dont you use something like an IPA or Prep spray to remove polishing oils, fillers and stuff like that before comparing the two sides? Maybe I missed it. But I only see you using it at the end.
Yes, it was IPA wiped (and again at the end) before install of the Sonax. I don't think I filmed it, but it was done!
@@ScottHD thank you for reply. Appreciate your work.
I love your video very nice 👌🏼
Great video thank you sir!🎉
So spray down the car every time with alcohol after you use compound and polish?
So this is something you’d do right before ceramic coating?
Yes
Hey there! Appreciate your video! So I tried buffing with the same exact tools, except I only used the Turtle Wax Polishing Compound. This video sucks , he’s like 2 min delay explain what he does 2 min after the fact
Turtle wax for the win 💀
impressed that the "$20" worked so well, but when you view them from farther back you can tell the "professional" side looks much better
No this test should be re done on a car with paint that is not in such good condition. Altho this is a high milage vehicle the car has obviously been very cared for .
So what happened to the soap comparison information? Or is that the next video?
I will call that good
the professional side has a tighter bleeding of the light than the walmart side.
So do you stop at that point or do you add additional wax after the polishing compound?
So should the 2nd step be a “polish” or a polishing compound?
Scott where did you get the wheel.brush at
Wheelies - Detailed Image... check them out here: bit.ly/3Zva5Yf That's the set of three, but you can get them separately.
I’ll never buy professional
Detail supplies again. F 3M F Sonax F Ardex
Please come back?😢
I hit the clearcoat with 400grit on a drill doing headlights. Will this method fix that?
I have to ask. Why do you have a 3 thousand dollar gloss meter? It has to have something to do with your job right?
How long does the compound last ?
What year make and model car is that
my car has a little bit of slight scratches on the clear coat. how would I make the process more abrasive to remove them?
Nice
I wanna try this
bad old paint needs corrected!..you could also call it delete the dullness..or you can be a normal person and say i buffed and waxed my car!!
I am not surprised it worked, Honda has soft paint. Doing the same thing on an Audi ou Mercedes might not work as well. You should try it ;)
True depends on the hardness of the Clear coat.
It takes some real guts to challenge your life's work with a bargain basement approach. Of course your work gets a bit more complex than polishing 10y old a Honda!
For 3k for that meter, i can get a paint job from Maaco for 2k and save a Grand
You're better off painting your car in your driveway than wasting money on Maaco
Thank you
Bro car has zero scratch damage 💀
Wow 😮 👌👍👍👍
