I've just tried this method, it is easy to do, and looks neat when finished. I found the e-wrap cast-on impossible, so this is going to be very useful, thanks Davie.
By the way, when I used this method I worked from left to right, as shown, and it felt very natural. But I'm left handed, so perhaps right handed knitters would find it easier to work from right to left?
