As a crocheter this makes so much sense to me!!! I don’t have time to take a hand off the needle to swing it around a needle. This is so much more efficient. I’ll be purling soon!!!
The continental method is a game changer for those of us who started with crochet! I’ve tried and failed to learn to knit several times because I found it slow and tedious but I stumbled on this video and decided to give this method a go and it’s SO much easier. Thank you!!

I managed to do it right from the first try this way, both knitting and crocheting. My form is still wonky af as I just learned how to knit today, but I understand how to do it.

I've found your tutorial among the first but didn't stick with it as continental felt way too rigid and hard as opposed to the English method that I found more natural. I've wasted about a day trying all the different ways and techniques but they all lead to the same nonsense. Now, I came back here. I took time and patiently watched your every move, following along. Let me tell you, if I had known this method was this easy once you get the motions right, I would have never searched for other tutorials. Now your videos are all I need to knit whatever I want. I was exactly the same. I started yesterday not knowing how to cast on, or what casting on even was, haha! I spent all day trying and failing and watching a bunch of different videos. I even had to sleep on it last night, and when I woke up this morning I was finally able to knit TWO ROWS! :D At first I was disheartened, but now I'm so happy with my progress! Hahaha! When I saw the continental method in this video, my mind was blown. It looked so much faster and I decided I'd give it a try. Looked a lot harder to learn at first, but I'm sure it'll pay off in the long run if I get better at this style. I also watched this video for extra tuition on how to knit continental: th-cam.com/video/q92bAeVFdao/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=RoxanneRichardson I know I'm recommending other videos, but they compliment this one a lot, I think. The method for casting on here seemed very tricky compared to the other one. Is there any benefit or reason for casting on like that? Is the end result any different? This is the best knitting video I've watched, and I've watched a lot! If you're a beginner, or if you just want to learn the continental stitch as I did, this is definitely the video from which you should learn. Don't be daunted by the 40 minutes. He is engaging, and truly goes over what he's teaching several times - not twice as is usually the case with other videos. He'll teach you about how to hold your hands and your arms so you avoid hurting yourself. It's the most comprehensive knitting tutorial out there. What a great teacher!!!
Norman, I wish I had a video like this when I first learned over 40 years ago! I learned throwing from books and about ten years ago, I taught myself continental and I find my stitches are neater and I knit faster! A few years ago I learned magic loop and I’ve never looked back! New knitters don’t know how lucky they are with teachers like you on video!

My mother and my mother-in-law both tried to teach me how to knit decades ago, and it was a frustrating disaster. I couldn't manage tension at all, everything just got tighter and tighter ad infinitum until I could barely move the needles. I learned crochet about 3 years ago, from a combination of books and youtube tutorials. Somehow I picked it up so much easier, especially the tensioning. So I started to look at knitting again, and I realised... I'd always been instructed in English knitting. And I'm sort of ambidextrous, and my left hand wants to be much busier. Continental knitting is already going so much better for me. I'm going to practise the 20 stitches starting from casting-on several times, until I have some confidence. Then I'm going to start knitting coasters and dishcloths!
Hello all. I had knitted a little in my twenties when my daughter was born. Than nothing for 50 years. My husband of 56 years, his health was declining. I was nervous and seemed to need to do something with my hands. I started knitting scarfs for the homeless, and I was on my way. Learning and doing helps with the loss.

Hallo Norman. Thank you so much for your clear and informative video. I am 74 years old, live in Scotland, and have been knitting since I was 7. I was taught Scottish knitting where the knitting needle is tucked under the right arm allowing the right hand to work the yarn without actually having to hold the needle (there are one or two videos on TH-cam showing how it’s done). It’s a faster method than English knitting. I’ve been trying to teach myself to knit on shorter needles (I can knit in the round on 4 needles, but 2 needles is a different story), but after so many years of Scottish knitting, I am finding it very difficult to hold the needles and develop a comfortable rhythm! I have already tried Continental knitting and feel comfortable with the knit stitch, but not so much with the purl stitch. Your video has now explained it very well and I’m looking forward to practicing it. Thanks again and I look forward to watching your other videos.
I’m so pleased to read this! My mum taught me to knit and I’ve always knit with the right needle under my arm - so many people have commented that it looks odd that I thought it was just a bad habit I’d developed. I had no idea it was Scottish knitting . This is my first try at continental knitting and I’m finding it very difficult so far.
Hello Margaret, my mother in law taught me this method when I first started knitting, interestingly enough she's Italian and has been taught to knit that way by her grandmother. I find it amusing how the same styles have different names in different parts of the world. All the best!
Thank goodness! I am the only person I know that knits with the right needle under their armpit! Everyone thinks I am nuts and I genuinely can't remember who taught me to knit like that. I'm from Yorkshire by the way. I'm really struggling with the continental style!
@@michellesymmons4557: I'm another underarm knitter, taught by my mother who learnt the technique from a family friend but I don't know where the friend learnt it. My music teacher whose mother was from Yorkshire said that the technique is used there. I've also seen a Lebanese Christian woman use that technique.
This has been the BEST tutorial I have come across. The way you slowed down and also explained it helped me so much. You also pointed out around the 14-minute mark, to be patient. That the muscles and brain need to learn the motions and such, that really helped me. I was thinking I was too "dumb" to do knitting and was getting disappointed. I have finally found a good teacher! I've tried crocheting with TH-cam videos and friends and I just can't get the hang of it. I usually walk away so frustrated and in tears. I watched each part of your for a few days. You have very clear pronouncing even when I have it in super slow. It's taking me about a week and a half to get the hang of the cast on and knit stitch and I'm almost ready for the next section. Thank you so much! This video was exactly what i needed! I have been crocheting for about 30 years & have been wanting to learn to knit for ages, but could just never quite get the hang of it. Continental knitting feels so much more natural for me since I'm used to controlling the yarn with my left hand & grabbing the stitches with my right, but I was still getting frustrated because my tension was too tight. after watching your instructions, I realized my problem! After so many years of always "yarn over" for crocheting, I realized that I was wrapping the yarn clockwise when I tried to knit! That one simple fix, of wrapping the yarn COUNTER-CLOCKWISE made ALL the difference! Thank you! I'm halfway through my first knitted washcloth without frogging the whole thing out of frustration. Soon, maybe be my knitting will be closer to my skill-level with crocheting! Thanks Again!
very happy to hear that and yeah...that's the only tricky part about switching to crochet...tho on a more interesting note, you can crochet with yo counter-clockwise as well for some interesting results.

I was so confused about how to handle the working yarn because when I watched other videos, they did not wrap it around their pinkie or their index, which made it slip or made it too loose. Really excellent tutorial. The slow motion every now and then is a great addition. I have spent more than 60 yrs knitting the English way. After becoming obsessed with Fair Isle knitting I decided to make the switch, at least for those projects. Your video is excellent and I am so happy that I “found” you! My mother tried to teach me English knitting when I was a kid, and it just didn't click. Instead I took up crochet and I've been crocheting for 11 years now, but still couldn't knit. I was talking with a friend about knitting, and I decided I was going to try again, and I found this tonight and tried it and within a few hours, I'm able to stockinette! I come from a crochet background and tried many times to learn to knit. My biggest issue was trying to hold the yarn in my right hand, lifting my hand off the needle...well, I gave up. Now that I see this where I can use my left hand for the working yarn, I am going to give it another go and NOT QUIT this time. I ordered bamboo knitting needles, size 5.5mm to get started. I know that the metal needles may be too slippery. Thank you for this very detailed and encouraging tutorial.

Ah! I was taught to knit as a child, so the English knitting method wasn't unfamiliar to me, but as someone who wound up predominantly crocheting, continental is _so_ much better feeling! I deal with chronic pain, and once I got back into knitting, I was going too fast for myself (lol) and cramping up, but this is a big help! Thank you SOOO much for this video! I have been knitting for about 12 years. i am an English style/picker/self taught knitter. I have issues with my right arm which has led me to try continental style knitting. I have tried over and over to learn Continental knitting, but it just didn't click. That is Until today because of this video I was able to catch on and stick with it! Throughout watching this video I knit about 5 inches. I am so grateful for your lesson. My muscle memory still has a lot of work but your suggestion to use patience and take breaks is going to help me conquer continental style knitting!

I've taken up knitting again after many years- I only did a few scarves and an afghan before. I started a month ago and did a scarf and practice swatches to get back, and a hat, and I just finished my first sock. I want to learn Continental and found your video here. Continental or German (sock stitch) style is how I learned and what I find the most comfortable. I like your videos. I learned knitting from my great-grandmother and my grandmothers as a little child, but when I started school I stopped knitting. Your videos are great and I remembered and relearned a lot. Thank you for that! I also use the cast on you were showing most of the time, but I use two needles in different sizes, because I find it to loose when I use the same size, but to narrow, when using just one needle.
I've been trying to learn for 4 years, I crochet mainly and my grandma has tried so hard to teach me how to knit. I'm not even sure how but the way you explained it here and slowed down was just amazing. I've been crocheting for 9 years and just picked up knitting. My natural response was to hold the yarn in my left hand as I do with crochet. But as I looked up tutorials I started to notice people holding it in their right hands. I decided to look up the basics again to make sure I remember things correctly and I found this video. Perfect timing!! I was about to try and change to my right hand, that would have been so slow!

I am also from Germany and I just love the creativity in both Knitting and Crocheting community, especially here on TH-cam. Just found your Channel and subscribed right away, thank you so much for these positive, and encouraging videos! I am sure, you help beginners a lot with them!! 😊 I was fortunate to have my grandma to teach me all techniques when I was a kid, but you can always learn more and adapt from others, so to this day, I am curious to learn and have so much fun with my hobbies. I enjoy needle work as a part of my life for 30+ years, which was a challenge at times since I have a tremor in both hands, but needle work helps me relax and calm down after work and is kind of my yoga 😇 To all the beginners: it is such an amazing feeling to see something you created being worn or used, basically loved by the people you made them for, and it is always worth a try ☺️ because of the tremor, I was quite intimidated to knit socks, I cannot say exactly why, but it is probably because the stitches are of course smaller in gauge size. Long story short, by now, socks are my favorite thing, because they are small projects, easy to take along with you and I can finish them faster than most other projects. And my daughter (16) loves wearing them 😇
Ive been looking everywhere for someone who knits the same way I learned! I just wanted to learn how to purl again cause I forgot. I learned how to knit several years ago and my teacher also taught me purl but not much so I’ve forgotten. Thank you so much! I know how to purl as well as knit the same way!

@@NimbleNeedles Ha. Ok - two questions. Sometimes at the end of a row, a big loop is dangling. I guess I never finished the stitch but I have no idea what to do with it to fix it. Which brings me to my next question (and request). I don't understand what's happening when I'm knitting - visually. So I feel that keeps me at a disadvantage when it comes to fixing mistakes. Can you do a video that shows in slow motion what's happening (stitch wise and row wise) and how doing the opposite would change it? I don't know if I'm making it clear. I just know I'm not the best when it comes to seeing patterns or seeing how things are put together. I need more explanation than the extra Joe lol.
@@NimbleNeedles LOL. OK - so I think it's called "reading your knitting". Not just distinguishing a knit vs purl side in a stocking stitch etc. but really understanding how each stitch is made. It seems to me that I would be able to catch mistakes more easily if I knew this. Does THAT make sense lol?

I only knit squares for blankets for Wrap With Love (an Aussie charity that distributes these blankets around the world) but I'm ready to expand beyond garter stitch - I'm a continental knitter who's afraid of pearl stich LOL -so I'll definitely be using all your videos for learning and inspiration! . The one little thing I've worked out myself BTW is to weigh my left-over yarn to see if there's enough for a full square or what fraction there of so I can plan mixing colours ahead rather than running out just short of completion - hope that makes sense. You really deserve the 4m views that someone else has on a "how to knit" video where he doesn't even address how to hold the yarn or tension. He never holds the yarn and you can imagine the mess I did by not holding the yarn to regulate tension.....you really explain everything when teaching!! Well done
Well, this video IS approaching the 1 million views mark. So I'm happy with that already. And truth be told, some people just want to knit one thing and not actually learn knitting. So I guess there is an audience for everything. Still, glad you liked my efforts in this video. I really tried to go the extra mile and put a loooot of thought and effort into this video :)

Norman, you are an excellent teacher! Thank you. I am a self taught English style knitter. I learned from a book years ago. You Tube wasn’t around when I learned lol. I am trying to learn how to knit faster by continental knitting. I’ve got the tension correct for the knit stitch, but I’m still fumbling a bit tensioning with the purl stitch. I’ll get there with practice. Your videos are very good and I look forward to each one. Keep up the good work.
You might want to check out his video on the Norwegian Purl stitch. When I was first learning, I too had problems with continental purling but the Norwegian Purl stitch worked better for me. Now I can do either way but if I only need to do 1-4 purl stitches then I’ll use the Norwegian Purl.
I agree. If you’re struggling with purling try the Norwegian purl. Fiddly at first but easy and fast once you master it. It made all the difference for me.
Hi, dear, Izm a teacher, too, and I beg you to watch Portuguesian purling Style. Doing this you only have to woop up the yarn with your left thumb and that's it! They do the tension by laying the yarn around the neck, then holding it like half a ring over the right middle finger. All then comes by itself. Cs it's so easy they normally purl, knitting stitch is a bit less easy but easy as well. Their purling is as easy that a child on the age of 3 can do it for hours without any help. Really, give it a try and you'll have several styles to switch whenever you want. You'll find„Portuguesian knit style“ writing here on TH-cam or at Google as well. Or any browser. Ok? Give me a back - answer and you'll know me happy without end. Be blessed, dear!

So during the pandemic I decided to learn to knit. I watched many videos by many different people, started with English style, then found Continental. So I knew "HOW" to knit when I found you. So I didn't bother with this video. I was watching a different one when I saw you do the purl stitch. WAIT. I don't make my purl stitch like that, what is going on? So I came back to this video and watched you teach the purl stitch. Well, 2 years too late, I have been knitting the purl stitch very differently and wrong. Just wrong, wrong, wrong. So I came back and watched this video. Thank you for the wonderful videos. I have watched many of them. Now I will have to go and retrain myself on the purl stitch. I finished my first knitting swatch! I can't believe all the things I was able to learn from a single video! Amazing teacher! I am sooo proud of myself 😅 For the next few days I'm just going to keep practicing similar swatches using the 2 stitches you taught us in this video and using different colors so then I can confidently move on to the next lesson 😁
I started as a crocheter, so knitting was really daunting because it’s just SO different. I tried loom knitting because it is a little easier ti understand, although I always struggled with my tension always being way too tight on a loom, but it give me a close up view of what the stitches are meant to look like and exactly what is happening to the yarn as you knit, so when I finally got the hang of traditional knitting, I feel like I had a really good grasp of “wait, does this look right? Is the yarn going where it should?” I’m still a knitting beginner, but your videos have been such an encouragement and I’ve learned lots from you! I hope beginners stick with it and don’t give up. It really is tricky at first, but once it clicks, it’s like riding a bike and you’ll never forget. 🤩❤️🧶
This is the best knitting instruction video I have ever watched. I have done crochet for years and would attempt and the quickly put down knitting because I could only do English style and even that was a struggle. It just never felt as natural to me as crochet. But this video was so clear and helpful that I after the first 4 rows or so I could knit without much thought. Thanks for making this video.

I managed to do it right from the first try this way, both knitting and crocheting. My form is still wonky af as I just learned how to knit today, but I understand how to do it.

I've found your tutorial among the first but didn't stick with it as continental felt way too rigid and hard as opposed to the English method that I found more natural. I've wasted about a day trying all the different ways and techniques but they all lead to the same nonsense. Now, I came back here. I took time and patiently watched your every move, following along. Let me tell you, if I had known this method was this easy once you get the motions right, I would have never searched for other tutorials. Now your videos are all I need to knit whatever I want. I was exactly the same. I started yesterday not knowing how to cast on, or what casting on even was, haha! I spent all day trying and failing and watching a bunch of different videos. I even had to sleep on it last night, and when I woke up this morning I was finally able to knit TWO ROWS! :D At first I was disheartened, but now I'm so happy with my progress! Hahaha!

I know I'm recommending other videos, but they compliment this one a lot, I think. The method for casting on here seemed very tricky compared to the other one. Is there any benefit or reason for casting on like that? Is the end result any different? I'm totally new to this whole business! Thanks so much for the in-depth tutorial! If you're a beginner, or if you just want to learn the continental stitch as I did, this is definitely the video from which you should learn. Don't be daunted by the 40 minutes. He is engaging, and truly goes over what he's teaching several times - not twice as is usually the case with other videos. He'll teach you about how to hold your hands and your arms so you avoid hurting yourself. It's the most comprehensive knitting tutorial out there. What a great teacher!!!
Norman, I wish I had a video like this when I first learned over 40 years ago! I learned throwing from books and about ten years ago, I taught myself continental and I find my stitches are neater and I knit faster! A few years ago I learned magic loop and I’ve never looked back! New knitters don’t know how lucky they are with teachers like you on video!

My mother and my mother-in-law both tried to teach me how to knit decades ago, and it was a frustrating disaster. I couldn't manage tension at all, everything just got tighter and tighter ad infinitum until I could barely move the needles.
I learned crochet about 3 years ago, from a combination of books and youtube tutorials. Somehow I picked it up so much easier, especially the tensioning. So I started to look at knitting again, and I realised... I'd always been instructed in English knitting. And I'm sort of ambidextrous, and my left hand wants to be much busier.
Continental knitting is already going so much better for me. I'm going to practise the 20 stitches starting from casting-on several times, until I have some confidence. Then I'm going to start knitting coasters and dishcloths!

Hello all. I had knitted a little in my twenties when my daughter was born. Than nothing for 50 years. My husband of 56 years, his health was declining. I was nervous and seemed to need to do something with my hands. I started knitting scarfs for the homeless, and I was on my way. Learning and doing helps with the loss.

Hallo Norman. Thank you so much for your clear and informative video. I am 74 years old, live in Scotland, and have been knitting since I was 7. I was taught Scottish knitting where the knitting needle is tucked under the right arm allowing the right hand to work the yarn without actually having to hold the needle (there are one or two videos on TH-cam showing how it’s done). It’s a faster method than English knitting.
I’ve been trying to teach myself to knit on shorter needles (I can knit in the round on 4 needles, but 2 needles is a different story), but after so many years of Scottish knitting, I am finding it very difficult to hold the needles and develop a comfortable rhythm! I have already tried Continental knitting and feel comfortable with the knit stitch, but not so much with the purl stitch. Your video has now explained it very well and I’m looking forward to practicing it. Thanks again and I look forward to watching your other videos.
I’m so pleased to read this! My mum taught me to knit and I’ve always knit with the right needle under my arm - so many people have commented that it looks odd that I thought it was just a bad habit I’d developed. I had no idea it was Scottish knitting . This is my first try at continental knitting and I’m finding it very difficult so far.
Hello Margaret, my mother in law taught me this method when I first started knitting, interestingly enough she's Italian and has been taught to knit that way by her grandmother. I find it amusing how the same styles have different names in different parts of the world. All the best!
Thank goodness! I am the only person I know that knits with the right needle under their armpit! Everyone thinks I am nuts and I genuinely can't remember who taught me to knit like that. I'm from Yorkshire by the way. I'm really struggling with the continental style!
@@michellesymmons4557: I'm another underarm knitter, taught by my mother who learnt the technique from a family friend but I don't know where the friend learnt it. My music teacher whose mother was from Yorkshire said that the technique is used there. I've also seen a Lebanese Christian woman use that technique.
This has been the BEST tutorial I have come across. The way you slowed down and also explained it helped me so much. You also pointed out around the 14-minute mark, to be patient. That the muscles and brain need to learn the motions and such, that really helped me. I was thinking I was too "dumb" to do knitting and was getting disappointed. I have finally found a good teacher! I've tried crocheting with TH-cam videos and friends and I just can't get the hang of it. I usually walk away so frustrated and in tears. I watched each part of your for a few days. You have very clear pronouncing even when I have it in super slow. It's taking me about a week and a half to get the hang of the cast on and knit stitch and I'm almost ready for the next section. Thank you so much! This video was exactly what i needed! I have been crocheting for about 30 years & have been wanting to learn to knit for ages, but could just never quite get the hang of it. Continental knitting feels so much more natural for me since I'm used to controlling the yarn with my left hand & grabbing the stitches with my right, but I was still getting frustrated because my tension was too tight. after watching your instructions, I realized my problem! After so many years of always "yarn over" for crocheting, I realized that I was wrapping the yarn clockwise when I tried to knit! That one simple fix, of wrapping the yarn COUNTER-CLOCKWISE made ALL the difference! Thank you! I'm halfway through my first knitted washcloth without frogging the whole thing out of frustration. Soon, maybe be my knitting will be closer to my skill-level with crocheting! Thanks Again!

My mother tried to teach me English knitting when I was a kid, and it just didn't click. Instead I took up crochet and I've been crocheting for 11 years now, but still couldn't knit. I was talking with a friend about knitting, and I decided I was going to try again, and I found this tonight and tried it and within a few hours, I'm able to stockinette! I come from a crochet background and tried many times to learn to knit. My biggest issue was trying to hold the yarn in my right hand, lifting my hand off the needle...well, I gave up.
Now that I see this where I can use my left hand for the working yarn, I am going to give it another go and NOT QUIT this time.
I ordered bamboo knitting needles, size 5.5mm to get started. I know that the metal needles may be too slippery.

Ah! I was taught to knit as a child, so the English knitting method wasn't unfamiliar to me, but as someone who wound up predominantly crocheting, continental is _so_ much better feeling! I deal with chronic pain, and once I got back into knitting, I was going too fast for myself (lol) and cramping up, but this is a big help! I have issues with my right arm which has led me to try continental style knitting. I have tried over and over to learn Continental knitting, but it just didn't click. Continental or German (sock stitch) style is how I learned and what I find the most comfortable. I like your videos. I learned knitting from my great-grandmother and my grandmothers as a little child, but when I started school I stopped knitting. Your videos are great and I remembered and relearned a lot. Thank you for that!
I also use the cast on you were showing most of the time, but I use two needles in different sizes, because I find it to loose when I use the same size, but to narrow, when using just one needle.

I've been trying to learn for 4 years, I crochet mainly and my grandma has tried so hard to teach me how to knit. I'm not even sure how but the way you explained it here and slowed down was just amazing. It finally makes since, I can cast on now and not lose my tension which was the number 1 issue I've been having over the years. Now that I finally get this I'm going to knit more often! I've been crocheting for 9 years and just picked up knitting. My natural response was to hold the yarn in my left hand as I do with crochet. But as I looked up tutorials I started to notice people holding it in their right hands. I decided to look up the basics again to make sure I remember things correctly and I found this video. Perfect timing!! I was about to try and change to my right hand, that would have been so slow!
I'm a crocheter learning to knit and this is the video that finally made it 'click' for me! I've been English knitting for more than 40 years but never got the hang of Continental methods. I am also from Germany and I just love the creativity in both Knitting and Crocheting community, especially here on TH-cam. Just found your Channel and subscribed right away, thank you so much for these positive, and encouraging videos! I am sure, you help beginners a lot with them!! 😊 I was fortunate to have my grandma to teach me all techniques when I was a kid, but you can always learn more and adapt from others, so to this day, I am curious to learn and have so much fun with my hobbies. I enjoy needle work as a part of my life for 30+ years, which was a challenge at times since I have a tremor in both hands, but needle work helps me relax and calm down after work and is kind of my yoga 😇 To all the beginners: it is such an amazing feeling to see something you created being worn or used, basically loved by the people you made them for, and it is always worth a try ☺️ because of the tremor, I was quite intimidated to knit socks, I cannot say exactly why, but it is probably because the stitches are of course smaller in gauge size. Long story short, by now, socks are my favorite thing, because they are small projects, easy to take along with you and I can finish them faster than most other projects. And my daughter (16) loves wearing them 😇

Ive been looking everywhere for someone who knits the same way I learned! I just wanted to learn how to purl again cause I forgot. I learned how to knit several years ago and my teacher also taught me purl but not much so I’ve forgotten. Thank you so much! I know how to purl as well as knit the same way!

Having been a crocheter for a little over a year, I STILL death grip my yarn and hook and it really gets to me! Have been trying to break the habit little by little. But with all these tips you included, ESPECIALLY the picking one, I'm getting ahead of those bad habits as I learn to knit. 💜💜💜

Thank you, Norman, for teaching me to knit continental style. I'm having great fun and have just completed my first project (a toy rabbit). It isn't perfect; there are loose and wonky stitches, but it's super cute! And I'm keeping it as a memento of my very first continental project. It's down to your superb teaching style that I have managed to learn this. I have tried in the past and failed. But with your clear instructions and your encouragement about not panicking, and that it's going to take time to learn and not to be discouraged, it has made it easy for me to finally learn this technique. 🎉🎉🎉

Incredible! I just started knitting on Saturday and used the English style. I gave up by Sunday. It seemed so inefficient to me. @@NimbleNeedles Ha. Ok - two questions. Sometimes at the end of a row, a big loop is dangling. I guess I never finished the stitch but I have no idea what to do with it to fix it. Which brings me to my next question (and request). I don't understand what's happening when I'm knitting - visually. So I feel that keeps me at a disadvantage when it comes to fixing mistakes. Can you do a video that shows in slow motion what's happening (stitch wise and row wise) and how doing the opposite would change it? I don't know if I'm making it clear. I just know I'm not the best when it comes to seeing patterns or seeing how things are put together. I need more explanation than the extra Joe lol.

@@NimbleNeedles LOL. OK - so I think it's called "reading your knitting". Not just distinguishing a knit vs purl side in a stocking stitch etc. but really understanding how each stitch is made. It seems to me that I would be able to catch mistakes more easily if I knew this. Does THAT make sense lol?

I only knit squares for blankets for Wrap With Love (an Aussie charity that distributes these blankets around the world) but I'm ready to expand beyond garter stitch - I'm a continental knitter who's afraid of pearl stich LOL -so I'll definitely be using all your videos for learning and inspiration! . The one little thing I've worked out myself BTW is to weigh my left-over yarn to see if there's enough for a full square or what fraction there of so I can plan mixing colours ahead rather than running out just short of completion - hope that makes sense. You really deserve the 4m views that someone else has on a "how to knit" video where he doesn't even address how to hold the yarn or tension. He never holds the yarn and you can imagine the mess I did by not holding the yarn to regulate tension.....you really explain everything when teaching!! Well done
Well, this video IS approaching the 1 million views mark. So I'm happy with that already. And truth be told, some people just want to knit one thing and not actually learn knitting. So I guess there is an audience for everything.

Norman, you are an excellent teacher! Thank you. I am a self taught English style knitter. I learned from a book years ago. You Tube wasn’t around when I learned lol. I am trying to learn how to knit faster by continental knitting. I’ve got the tension correct for the knit stitch, but I’m still fumbling a bit tensioning with the purl stitch. I’ll get there with practice. Your videos are very good and I look forward to each one. Keep up the good work.

You might want to check out his video on the Norwegian Purl stitch. When I was first learning, I too had problems with continental purling but the Norwegian Purl stitch worked better for me. Now I can do either way but if I only need to do 1-4 purl stitches then I’ll use the Norwegian Purl.
I agree. If you’re struggling with purling try the Norwegian purl. Fiddly at first but easy and fast once you master it. It made all the difference for me.
Hi, dear, Izm a teacher, too, and I beg you to watch Portuguesian purling Style. Doing this you only have to woop up the yarn with your left thumb and that's it! They do the tension by laying the yarn around the neck, then holding it like half a ring over the right middle finger. All then comes by itself. Cs it's so easy they normally purl, knitting stitch is a bit less easy but easy as well. Their purling is as easy that a child on the age of 3 can do it for hours without any help. Really, give it a try and you'll have several styles to switch whenever you want. You'll find„Portuguesian knit style“ writing here on TH-cam or at Google as well. Or any browser. Ok? Give me a back - answer and you'll know me happy without end. Be blessed, dear!

So during the pandemic I decided to learn to knit. I watched many videos by many different people, started with English style, then found Continental. So I knew "HOW" to knit when I found you. So I didn't bother with this video. I was watching a different one when I saw you do the purl stitch. WAIT. I don't make my purl stitch like that, what is going on? So I came back to this video and watched you teach the purl stitch. Well, 2 years too late, I have been knitting the purl stitch very differently and wrong. Just wrong, wrong, wrong. So I came back and watched this video. Thank you for the wonderful videos. I have watched many of them. Now I will have to go and retrain myself on the purl stitch. Your videos are so helpful and explain very well how to move, what to do, and what it should all look like. Thank you so very much for the time you take and put into your videos and blog.

I finished my first knitting swatch! I can't believe all the things I was able to learn from a single video! Amazing teacher! I am sooo proud of myself 😅 For the next few days I'm just going to keep practicing similar swatches using the 2 stitches you taught us in this video and using different colors so then I can confidently move on to the next lesson 😁

I started as a crocheter, so knitting was really daunting because it’s just SO different. I tried loom knitting because it is a little easier ti understand, although I always struggled with my tension always being way too tight on a loom, but it give me a close up view of what the stitches are meant to look like and exactly what is happening to the yarn as you knit, so when I finally got the hang of traditional knitting, I feel like I had a really good grasp of “wait, does this look right? Is the yarn going where it should?” I’m still a knitting beginner, but your videos have been such an encouragement and I’ve learned lots from you! I hope beginners stick with it and don’t give up. It really is tricky at first, but once it clicks, it’s like riding a bike and you’ll never forget. 🤩❤️🧶

This is the best knitting instruction video I have ever watched. I have done crochet for years and would attempt and the quickly put down knitting because I could only do English style and even that was a struggle. It just never felt as natural to me as crochet. But this video was so clear and helpful that I after the first 4 rows or so I could knit without much thought. Thanks for making this video.
