  • On the same day Jennifer picked up her new Odyssey, the engine seized up on the highway. This is my worst nightmare. After all that work and effort, the exact thing I didn’t want to happen, happened.
    So what do you do in this situation? Fix it, which is exactly what I do in this episode. I replace the engine in the 2005 Honda Odyssey as well as fix up a few other minor issues and I get Jennifer back on the road ASAP.
    I will be making a separate video tearing down the old engine to see what went wrong. Right now, I need to get Jennifer back on the road.

    God Bless you and your wife Eric. Amazing what you can do. If Honda would have just left it alone like the 3.5 j series on my first Gen 03 pilot, we wouldn't have these worries or issues.
    Wish Honda would create a shut off since they didn't put in a button to disable eco (my '10 v6 accord coupe doesn't have one at least) until the 12 v6 accord coupe.
    Goodbye 271hp if I don't stop it on mine asap. Talk about the Honda v6s beating the transmission to death, with vcm a lot more so. Honda makes the best engines in the world. They should not go into trying to save a few miles of gasoline by sacrificing engine performance and basic function/ reliability.
    I need to muzzle the vcm on my v6 accord Pronto so appreciate you showing the option to run it straight instead of ordering the mod. Love Honda and vtec, hate vcm technology. It wears the rear piston rings out way before their time (Honda has a TSB on it and have replaced many sets of rings. It's a deeper problem so thats like putting a bandaid right? Looks like it did more than that on your 3.5 L if it just died completely. They sacrificed the engine for stupid green eco bs. Thanks for sharing this awesome content and knowledge! Continued wishes for safety & health!

    Holy cow. What a crazy failure. VCM sucks. Just helped a buddy change transmission fluid on his 2016 because the VCM transmission operations (lock / unlock converter) cooked the fluid. It was like water, no viscosity at all, constantly slipping. Good on you for fixing her van!
    Edit: my buddy's van had 75K miles... He bought it used. For some reason the nationwide used car dealer advised that he needed a new transmission (not a warranty item) since "the fluid is good for 100K." Lol.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honda automatic transmission fluid should be changed every 30K or so, not every 100K. Also the VCM had nothing to do with this engine failure as you'll see in next weeks video. Be sure to tune in. Thanks for the comment.

    Working on GM W-Bodies the engine/transmission is removed the same way. All electrical can be disconnected and by removing the upper strut tower bolts it’s very easy to service. I have made a cart with wheels to put the cradle on and move around the shop. PS and AC can stay in the car. But for putting the assembly back in I use threaded rods for the frame bolts also this makes it easy if you need a little more room to reach things and the bolts don’t have enough threads. Just remember to replace the rod’s with bolts before finishing. 😊

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, there was no room to sneak the AC compressor by when lifting the van, or I would have done it that way. I've had plans to build a car similar to yours, but I don't really have the space to store it once I make it. Thanks for the comment.

    Eric - I replaced the same high pressure line on my ‘06 and it was stuck in the same spot! After banging my head against the wall I finally realized I could just bend and break the line, slip a wrench on it and loosen the nut. It’s such a tight spot to work in. Could also cut the line with cutters if I had large enough ones.

    I found an easy cheap way to bypass the vcm. I unplugged the coolant sensor and plugged it into an unused coolant sensor that I just tied out of the way. I bought the cheapest temp sensor at AutoZone and just plugged it in. No codes, but the temp gauge stays at the coldest mark and I believe the engine management never reaches closed loop mode. The idle is a little higher than I would like.

    The vcm failed on my 2012 Accord. Your engine sounds like mine did. Cylinder 1 had a bent control rod, wrecked the bearings and scored the crank. "New" engine has 49,000 less miles, hopefully buying me time. My mechanic installed a new rear main seal, water pump and timing belt, etc. I am religious about my oil changes and overall maintenance. The fuel economy over the road is very very good, but overall I am willing to sacrice highway efficiency for durability. Half-ass engineering ends up with terrible results.

    Since you have a nice floor you may want to try using chalk or a marker next time. Mark the jack stand locations on the floor then mark where the frame/engine is sitting on the stands.
    Maybe that will be easier? I suspect some slight maneuvering will be required no matter what.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I considered that, but the oil dry was getting in the way. Also, the placement of the jack stand does not directly correspond to it's placement on the cradle. In other words, the cradle could move on the jack stand and still be out of alignment. Thanks for the comment.

    Eric, great job! Is it possible to fix that horrible rust spot on the drivers side rear quarter? I know it is not mechanical but leaving that on an otherwise reliable car is not great.

      It sure is possible, but not by me. In my view, rust does not effect the vans ability to get from point A to point B. Thanks for the comment.

    So nice putting in the time and money for the engine on your own dime! It kind of makes me fearful about not having the credit to get a newer car and having an old car that will put me further and further into debt because my skills and tools are nowhere near yours. I would have to bring a job like this to a mechanic! 😨 I’m not sure if this happens to many people though. So maybe it is an irrational fear. Lol.

    Honestly I would wager to say that the compromised catalytic converter‘s is ultimately what led to the demise of this engine and perhaps the VCM system as well. I’ve seen this scenario happen over and over again with cars that have bad catalytic converter‘s and the comb get sucked into the engine and just completely destroys it, but it’s usually with Nissans more often than any other brand name.

      Converters don't go bad without a reason, usually a poorly running engine. I talked about that in the previous video. See next weeks video to find out what caused this engine to fail. Thanks for the comment.

      Not all Odysseys have VCM. It's normally just the high end ones. Also, the VCM did not cause this engine to fail. I'll show that in next weeks video. Thanks for the comment.

    The Eco-Wonder Honda VCM! Save 150 dollars on fuel, lose 15000 on repairs.
    This "engine" perfectly sums up what's wrong with the technology today.
    They ruined ICU bulletproof balance and now are chasing the "electric dream" when their products don't even last.

      @wiimaster2847 yep. It's turned into a numbers game anyway. Drove a '92 S10 for 12 years. Bought it new. Will never see anything that size again. Companies have made SUV and mini trucks larger to get reclassified as heavy trucks 🙄🙄 Models like Subaru Forester or Ford Explorer doubled in size 2000 to 2010. Government changed regulations AGAIN. People didn't want to give up their tanks. So manufacturers getting desperate turbocharging everything or slapping on cylinder deactivation.

    Do you think the readiness monitors will still run if the engine computer only sees 167f? This vcm tuner 2 is sparking my interest. I believe the evap monitor won’t run unless the engine computer sees at least 176f, same with egr monitor. With two monitors not being able to meet enabling criteria I’m curious if this will present an issue getting emissions inspected. Thanks

    • @eastmanresearch3143
      @eastmanresearch3143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, as the designer of the VCMTUNER II - yes it will allow all readyness monitors to be set. If the vehicle sits idle for a duration the real ECT temperature will be restored to run diagnostics. The evap monitor takes some time to run (usually a few drive cycles) and is one of the more difficult tests to get honda's to run due to the gas tank level requirements being between 1/2 and 3/4. We met carb e.o. emission limits with our original device (VCMT1000 / VCMTUNER) and also passed obd2 and received a carb e.o.. Currently pursuing carb e.o. on the VCMTUNER II at this time. The throttle position re-learn won't be allowed to run unless you reach 194F or higher to perform that procedure. Our product was designed to allow this to occur by running the TPS re-learn normally, and let the vehicle sit for 10+ minutes at idle after closing the hood, reaching 3000 RPM for 2-3 minutes after the vehicle is warmed up w/ the A/C off.
