When I was looking at cars the Odyssey was the most metal for the money - I think the fact it wasn't a top selling car means a lot of people chose incorrectly
We had the 2005 model, bullet proof with 3 toddlers, the restraints were a pain with 3 baby seats in second row, ended up with roof tray for travelling, did sydney to gold coast a few times in it with kids, still very relaxing to drive
I guess its nice to see there are still real people on the internet and not filled with bots as only a human would point out the wrong graphic for the car pricing Also love the vids bro!
What timing! Just bought a MY16 Odyssey VTi-L today and the video helped greatly, knew exactly what to look for and confirmed my choice when comparing to the competition. The G10's where full of rust, the iMax has a ticking time bom of an engine and imports are a bit too hard (owned a 260rs Stagea in the past). Thanks team!!
The best feature is you can slide the middle row laterally, negating the aisle. This allows the seats to slide further back. I’m 193cm and I can’t touch the front row seats … amazing.
Missed a feature with the Vti-L's captains chairs. That if you are four person, and third row is stored. Remove the bar from each of the runners in the floor. Slide the chairs closer to the middle, they will then slide back for more leg room!
I can’t help myself. I quite like it. I’ll admit when your mechanic buddy said get rid of the kids, stop being a taxi service, sell it and buy something you actually like dented my enthusiasm a little. And made me laugh out loud. Maybe I’m getting old and like the room, comfort, gadge and auto. Who knows. Anyway. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Good review. As an owner of an RC1 (2016), I'd like to add some information that wasn't mentioned for the 2014 - 2017 models. *Mechanical/Build* - Common to have leaking rocker cover gaskets. 3 of the 5 i looked at for purchase were leaking. Easy fix. - The weather strips on the front door/window seal areas commonly detach at the front side, creating wind noise through to the cabin. - my car developed a knocking front strut top, (but not sure how common that is) - the brake setup is biased a little more rearward, so rear brake pads may wear faster or at least as fast as the fronts. *Driving* - On the firm side, it feels like the spring/shock combo is not properly tuned to the car. However it does mean there is little body roll on the plus side. - The CVT creates a delay when taking off, so you often have to pre-empt with the throttle if you need to pick a gap in traffic to pull out. - the front lip setup makes it easy to scrape heading in to steeper driveways etc
The previous generation was so much better looking! 75% the way through before Jim showed up… on European cars he normally shows up at least half way through the video 😎
I own the RB facelift (2010) Odyssey and I think it’s just about flawless. Mine is almost 15 years old with 153,000km. It’s been in a crash before so the front bumper and the doors are a little banged up. But it’s pretty perfect, I love it to death and I think it looks cool as hell. The only thing to go wrong for me is the front passenger window switch is slow to respond or doesn’t respond, that’s it.
I had one of them as a company drive (our choice) and an Avensis Verso before that. Great cars for hauling a tribe around. With decent tyres they could cover ground surprisingly quickly and the kids didn't spew. As a 2 row vehicle the boot was huge. Far more practical than the 3 row SUVs we got afterwards.
Had four of these over the last 24 years (current one - 2013 owned from new and now has 185k kms). All of them completely faultless. Fabulous for moving the kids and dogs around from one sport venue to the next. My wife will not part with the current car. In 11 years - three sets of tyres; one set of brake discs; one gear box bearing and the rest has been normal servicing at a dealership. Just my 2c worth...
An old mate of mine purchased one of these a few years ago. Let's just say, he wasn't a people mover kind of guy. I have to admit that we all gave him a bit of a hard time for it. Then I got a ride in the thing. That quietened me down really quickly. The seating was super comfortable. In fact, I'd call them "luxury" seats, and I've owned an S class for comparison. The ride was more than acceptable, and it cornered like it was on rails, at least for what it was. And it was quiet. Really quiet. And the sound system in his sounded fantastic. As far as comfortable spaces are concerned, I'd have to say that it was one of the better cars that I've been in. I'm guessing that the last time I went in that car it was five or six years old and had quite a few country "k's" on it, and it was like new.
Jim is 200% right to say that these k24w are very leaky. As long as a used one is without leaks, it is good to go. Worst leaks you could ever get in these are rear main seal and front crank seal, massive job. Gearbox had to come out unfortunately. Please don’t ask how much it cost, I still can’t get over it.
The Asian market versions of this 7 seats Odyssey you can push the middle row inwards towards each other, and slide them pretty far back (when the 3rd row is folded away) for some absolutely amazing leg room. And as you have mentioned already, the middle row is so bloody comfortable already and on top of that you now also get massive leg rooms. But it looks like this particular one doesnt have the seat rails for that function.
with this vti-l the seats do push to the middle inwards and slides quite far back, the rails are actually almost invisible under the seats on the floor, he forgot to mention it
Definitely, should buy one. Great review, spot on description and comments on the good bad and the ugly of the Honda Odyssey RC1. Yes, I own one, it’s something I love to hate, and hate to love at the same time. Won’t sell it for a sedan, hatch, or an SUV.
You do realise that every VW and most Euro cars since ~2006 feature the ‘remote windows’ function to wind down the windows via the key, right?! When we “upgraded” from my wife’s 2009 Golf to a 2019 Subaru Outback, we were shocked to discover that the Subaru lacked this feature! We use it so often with the dogs at the beach that it was part of the reason for selling the Outback to buy a Passat wagon. Also, second point; the interior cubby you say should be removed it actually really handy for us! We keep a tin of Eclipse mints and lip balm in there. We use it every day, and really missed having it when we had the Subaru (again, Golf & Passat have a similar storage cubby in this location).
Gran Turismo 4 made me love the older, sleeker Honda Odyssey. If I had the money and space, I would seriously consider modding one just for cool points alone. It's basically a sportwagon!
Yes! Buy it instead of an SUV! They are brilliant despite how ugly they are. My dad's band mate uses it to lug around the band equipment outside my dad's drums(he won't let anyone touch them!), which he throws into his XR6 EG wagon.
Was wondering why you didn't mention the Vellfire/Alphard as an alternative until the other option to consider bit at the very end. This is a car that I'll have to seriously mention to some people I know that are looking at possibly getting a new car soon. Good to know that mechanical they're relatively cheap to fix and that it's mostly age and lack of maintenance that cause the majority of the mechanical issues. Good work guys and as always I look forward to Friday's video as per usual 👍.
Great video! I will definitely recommend the JDM hybrid version. It takes away to issue of sluggishness in this car. Saves fuel and yet more fun to drive. The power to weight ratio improves significantly with the hybrid. In my experience with both Estima hybrid and this, the odyssey absolute wins absolutely.
Did some research before, saw a Japanese owner score fuel consumption at around 5.5L/100km with mostly country driving in a 2.0 hybrid one. Also for the idemitsu fluid: I tried to find the cvt fluid for Subaru tr580 and the only place I can get some (cvtf type sb2) is an American online mega store.😂
I'm really interested in the hybrid version. It looks like it has decent get up and go, and is the newer Honda iMMD system that works very similarly to Toyota's system (rather than the old DCT based hybrid) Great fuel economy too.
Every Odyssey after the 3rd Gen is the "I've given up my life for kids" choice of vehicle. The RB1 Mugen spec is pretty sweet, especially once you do a cheeky K20A swap.
I bought my wife a cheap RB1 version of this car for a couple of years and she can't find another car to replace it with now. She loves the practicality and there is nothing else that compares. Maybe a Kia Carnival but they are too big and have their own issues.
Hello, love your team's content. Can you guys also make a video about import car buyer's guide? All the crowns, century, gtr, etc. are so attractive, but Idk where to start and how to properly buy it without being scammed. Sincerly thank you!
I have to say, If you can replace genuine Honda parts and materials always, then buy a honda. If you buy a Honda make sure previous owners have so. Or you buying a black hole. Honda is kinda very delicate. Be careful.
@3:10 you should the powertrain specs. And I’m guessing your Honda Odysseys are smaller than the American versions. Over here it looks larger and comes with the 3.5L J-series V6 and 10-Speed auto transmission.
A reason why infotainment systems suck so much in Japanese cars, especially JDMs is that within Japan it’s extremely common to buy aftermarket systems that though the graphics may look outdated they are extremely usable and practical, and come with crazy good stanavs. In fact many of the cars there are sold as new without an infotainment system at all, therefore the insensitive for manufacturers to develop good systems is low. However global demands have changed this for global models. HTH
eeey the parts for the estimas are the same as for the tarago, that was a bit of an unfair claim, insurance costs yeah thats definately a point. I went with the v6 tarago for power and it seemed roomier than the odyssey, but it was a tough choice, the vellfire/alphard was a little too big and less car like to drive.
Would have been nice if Honda made the Odyssey's designs a bit more daring, like Toyota's Vellfire and the Alphard. The Odyssey pretty much looks like an elongated Honda Fit, just stretched to add more seating.
Owned a 2005 model for 18 years. That was about 50k and 5 years too long. Other than that, drama free but A-pillar visibility and driver seating position was a nightmare.
It's less sexy? Couldn't disagree more. My parents had one of the previous gen, and I hated it, I felt so embarrassed driving around in it. I was much older than my siblings I guess, but it had a low roof, purple colour, it was pure cringe. Those memories have clouded it for me, I look at these new gen odysseys and I think they're great aesthetically. They look modern, they don't have the squat profile, they have nice new colours.
I still don't really understand why there is always so much kid transport borderline mockery for these vs SUVs trying to do the exact same job, and failing.
My ex has one of these to cart our kids around on her weekends with them and the head has cracked 3 times costing her $6k each time which must suck because I know she services it on time and she drives like an old lady. Just bad luck I guess? For me, until March this year I drove the Toyota Avensis Verso I bought back in 2008 when we were together which is pretty much a 7 seater Camry. Thing was indestructible, super cool aircon, easy to service & maintain and easily modifiable. Ofcourse I was happy to finally get rid of the thing and now I drive something I actually enjoy lol.
Cylinder head cracks? Don’t the parts come with warranty? By the second time, you weld have spent the same amount as the car is worth. I’d be taking it up with Honda Australia in regards to head cracking…
We had this when we had our first baby. It was a good car but fuel economy is horrible 4-5km/l and really slow. Small interior space. But besides that it an ok car. We are Philippines based.
Maybe look at the Toyota Innova, but make sure it's the diesel. The 2.0-litre petrol auto versions aren't as good (I had one; couldn't afford the diesel) as they are not as economical as the diesel and the gear ratios are not well-suited to the power characteristics of the engine. If buying used get the higher spec (G or V) versions and auto is best to cope with the rightly-notorious Philippines traffic!
You'd check the Japan Mugen or Modulo upgrade Kit, and Japan Odyssey Car RC car meet Video, the mods are sexy, I enjoy my RC4 hybrid, I've upgraded with Cusco Reinforcement bar and Blitz Strut Tower Bar, and upsize to 18inch wheel. if you have some body kits and tein coil kit to lower 1-2 finger, it's coolest dad car, LOL, I've owned Toyota Alphard, I still prefer Honda
I was a big fan of the Honda Odyssey, especially the third and fourth generations, but as soon as it started to become more like it's North America cousin with this generation i lost complete interest.
I wish dingo would do another scene, rather than the usual. Dismissing kids is NOT cool. They were kids too...maybe issues from the past? Anyhow, lay-off the dismissal of future generations...uncool.
Honda's modern design philosophy and its powertrains are pathetic. From its disgusting fast back wannabe hatch slopes to its sissy 1.5L soon to be 800mL engines. Honda's sedan designs peaked around the Accord Euro CU2 and the 2016 Accord V6L.

I honestly don’t know why more people don’t buy them. They are so practical way better than an SUV.

Nowadays people want gadgets & gimmick.

The Toyota. really an amazing vehicle. But the price and the insurance, ouch!
How does this compare to a StepWGN I wonder
We'll find out soon. ;)
This car is different from the North American Odyssey which has the J35 V6 engine only.
There are mom's everywhere getting hot and bothered 😂
7:48 Sheepskin seat covers are pretty comfy actually. Leather is totally overrated.
We think sheepskin seat covers should make a comeback
haha had a golf 2013 the power steering went out after about 2-3 months 💀💀
I was a big fan of the Honda Odyssey, especially the third and fourth generations, but as soon as it started to become more like it's North America cousin with this generation i lost complete interest.
I have no idea why Im watching this vlog, but I am.
Glad you are though
I wish dingo would do another scene, rather than the usual. Dismissing kids is NOT cool.
They were kids too...maybe issues from the past?
Anyhow, lay-off the dismissal of future generations...uncool.
Honda's modern design philosophy and its powertrains are pathetic. From its disgusting fast back wannabe hatch slopes to its sissy 1.5L soon to be 800mL engines. Honda's sedan designs peaked around the Accord Euro CU2 and the 2016 Accord V6L.
