  • Golfshake equipment expert Ryan Rastall tests out the new Mizuno JPX 921 forged irons at Howley Hall Golf Club in Leeds.
The Mizuno JPX921 forged irons offer a more forgiving iron than the 921 Tour and as well as forgiveness look and feel great.
Find out what Ryan thought and how he got on testing the JPX 921 forged clubs out on the golf course which are tech featured, provide help with offcenter hits, provide forgivenees but still have the sleek look for any golf purists out there that llike the look of a blade.

Just got fitted for these clubs and played only a few rounds and practiced s few times. Always played Pings before and couldn’t believe I would play something different. However, during the fitting, I fell in love with the looks of these clubs and how they set up to the ball. After playing with them, I can honestly say “I love these irons”. They feel almost “buttery” . I would highly recommend these for anyone from a 3 - 14 handicap.

I bought a set of these after playing Ping Zing 2 irons for 27 years! I'm a higher handicapper because my short game sucks and my driving is erratic, but I generally strike my irons decent. It took me a while to get used to them, but I now love these irons and glad I shelled out $1500 US dollars for them. Buttery smooth and forgiving😀

I had the exact same experience with the six iron on a par 3 on my 1st round with these clubs. missed the grooves entirely (ball mark was on the smooth chrome part of the toe).
The ball still went dead straight and hit the green.

Awesome review ! Will be comparing this to the Ping i210 or if i wait until next year it’ll be the replacement i210 (i220?). Happy to hear how forgiving this forged model is ! From what i seen and heard the sole of the i210 is more forgiving for a digger ( i tend to take medium size divots with my mid and short irons). I’m definitely not a sweeper. It will be an indoor fitting so will be hard to get a feel for the sole interaction.

Help! Question about the 921 Forged, regarding the CNC milled slot behind club face. On the 4-7 irons (Chromoly), is the slot formed by milling through the sole of the club and forging the sole slot back on? Or is it milled through the reverse side of the club? Second question. Considering the 8-AW/GW are not Chromoly at all, rather 1025E, my assumption is there is a difference in thickness of the back-milled slot on short clubs (likely not as wide considering it is a weaker material, just the lofts are jacked and CG is low?). Or are the short irons even back milled at all? That’s the one thing that drives me nuts about golf club manufacturers is they don’t give all the details. As a matter of fact, in the months leading up to the 921 Forged release, Not one mention in any of the literature about the short irons being a completely different material. I pre-ordered them the first day they were available and I was one of the first to receive them in the mail in the fall of 2020. I was completely flabbergasted to see the short irons didn’t even have the tech in them whatsoever. Contacted Mizuno and received a reply from Chris Voshall within a couple minutes. Basically accepted the blame for completely blindsiding the customers with the reality that the tech was only in the 4-7 irons. Yikes. Huge mistake made by Mizuno on this iron. They have since informed consumers about their 221/223/225 irons that are also Chromoly long thru mid irons and 1025E in the short irons. I can absolutely feel a difference, the Chromoly irons feel a tad bit clunkier, but still pleasantly soft. Can’t say I dislike the irons by any means, but I felt like I got scammed. Anyways, if anybody could help me out with that. CNC question I’d really appreciate it.

Hi Ryan. this review is making me really think the Forged or HM Pro are the way to go. I am a 12 hcap and currently play a 5 year old set of Wilson D300 which I bought off rack when I was a 20 hcap. As I have improved the thicker face of the wilson has really started to bother me and I struggle to hit the 6 & 5 irons especially as I see the back of the iron and it really puts me off. I feel like it alters my swing looking at it. Would you say that a sleeker iron like the forged or even the HMB would suit - concern with the HMB would be the reduced forgiveness. I wonder would a more players iron suit (HMB) or does the forged / HM PRo give me the best of both worlds? thanks Ryan, Peter
