  • So all the links that were promised are below, here is a quick little blurb on my hawk 250. 4,778 miles at the time of this video, my hawk is a 2019, it has a 110 main jet. Has lots of improvement mods, but no performance mods. Everything I have done to the bike has been documented here on TH-cam, check out my hawk 250 playlist below to see everything I’ve done to the bike! There are also lots of hill climbing and riding videos in the playlist as well.
    At the time of filming this video I had
    Miles: 4,778
    Hours: 159.0 (keep in mind I put this hour meter on the hawk at roughly 375 miles)

    INFO/LINKS TO AIR FILTERS:
    Factory filter:
    can be found many places including eBay and Texaspowersports. IMO this is the best filter for your bike. All I had to type in to find an air filter is “hawk 250 air filter” in the web browser (for eBay) and it’s easy enough to find the filter on txps. Here is a link to the stock filter on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/RPS-Hawk-250...

    Briggs and Stratton air filter:
    This filter can be found everywhere from tractor supply to Lowe’s to amazon and eBay. KEEP IN MIND YOU MUST RUN STICK ON FOAM TO THICKEN THE LIP SEAL FOR THIS FILTER TO SEAL PROPERLY! You will often find the number 5043 on the air filter packaging but It’s official part number is: 491588S
    your looking at $7 if you buy one in a store like TSC or LOWES. I recommend buying on line, these filters are dirt cheap, if you change your air filter a lot this filter is probably the way to go. here is a link to a 5 pack for $7 on amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
    K&n air filter: this filter will not work, it’s too small, DONT USE IT! UNLESS YOUR MAGIC

    Hey just wanted to thank everyone for all the love and support! Here are a couple videos that should be watched in series, these videos are absolutely critical to the longevity of the hawk 250. As you guys know the rings got toasted on my bike because of the air box, these videos go though the repairs as well as the proper modification of the air box to prevent engine failure in the future. As always, thanks for watching!

    Great vid! For the price of an almost fits K&N filter, you should consider cutting the filter element out of stock filter assembly and replace it with a piece of felt cloth from your local wall-a-china mart for 50 cents. Everything fits/seals/flows the same and better than stock! Ofcourse, this mod won't survive riding in the rain or riding your bike like an all-terrain underwater vehicle but there is evidence the other filters don't either in varying degrees of degradation! You should consider a snorkel or Scott air-pack addition
    for that!

    Looks like that blue B+S air filter wants to be installed with the metal mesh on top. It may be the wrong application if it doesn't fit that way. If installed with the mesh up, the vacuum created by the intake of the engine will cause the filter material to expand which gives you better flow and increased surface area. Installed the opposite way, the vacuum created by the intake causes the filter material to close up, restricting flow, and starving the engine for oxygen. With the filter material compressed by the vacuum, only the top of the ridges will trap dust causing a further decrease of airflow... Plus, the steel mesh protects the filter material from pebbles and other objects such as a dropped monkey wrench.

    I don't know if you knew this or not but K&N air filters requires oiling before installing. You can buy k&n filter oil at a parts store.

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one is one of the rare ones that doesn’t require oil. It’s weird but that’s what it says in the directions. The filter part itself is actually not the problem, as you could see from the video the lip seal will not seal correctly unfortunately. Unless you glue this filter into the bike, I have found it does not seal correctly period lol. I am sticking with the factory air from now on. Thanks for watching!

    instead of adding the foam piece you could have just added 1/8" to 1/4" tabs on the filter side of the retainer placing them so the filter is held down firmly all the way around. if the retainer bows up, simply make the tabs that you added on the retainer a bit longer near the center
    .....it's a thought !

    Thanks for the vid bro. My air box got full of water and milky oil during a down pour in the way to work. I pulled the plug and cleaned it. No water shot out when I pushed the kick starter. I’ve changed the oil and let it run, dried out and am about to clean said air filter, and change the oil again. Any suggestions?? I have the efi version

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don’t worry about drying the air filter out too much, think about all of the internal combustion air planes flying through rain, the motor will just eat it up. If you think about it, any time your going to be riding in rain or moisture, your air filter will be wet, so that’s not too big of a deal. You will probably have to change the oil several times. Check out my air box mods video, it points out that the crankcase breather is low in the air box and any time water is present in the air box it drains right into the engine oil. I moved mi crank case breather to the top of the air box. Hopefully this helps.

    K&N filters are about as effective as a window screen for keeping out dust and dirt. Project Farm has a fantastic video about air filters.

    Hey not pertaining to filter lol but for sprockets .....
    I got a 17 tooth and 45 tooth to keep the same chain with no effort to resize or buy.... But like can my front sprocket be made for a 520 and run fine with a 428 pitch chain? ( and a 428 rear for that matter?)

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, unfortunately you can NOT run different classification size chain and sprockets. If you go with 520, everything must be 520, if you run 428, it all has to be 428. Hopefully this helps!

    How did you get the top of the filter off so easy? Mine will not come out, maybe I’m not trying hard enough.

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s very tight to get out, you have to find the exact way to remove it. It’s like one of those trick puzzles. What I do is pop the lid off, then slide it back and up at a 25 degree angle. It’s hard to explain but that’s how i get my lid off. Thanks for watching!

    what thickness is the stickey foam? a link please.

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s 1/8” thick foam, i’m honestly not 100% sure where it came from, I just found it in a pile of random stuff around here lol. I would recommend just searching for one 8 inch thick open sell stick on foam. It will come in a 10 x 20 sheet or something along those lines. I’m sure you can find some on line, I’m not 100% sure who would carry it in store. Hopefully this helps! Thanks for watching!

    Is the efi the same filter?

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would assume so, however I would make sure and double check. I unfortunately do not have a EFI hawk, so I’m not 100% sure right off the top of my head. Probably the easiest way to tell is to buy one of the factory carbureted Hawk 250 air filters and see if it works. Hopefully this helps! Thanks for watching!

    Okay I went n watched ur little video. Your problem is not the air filter yeah they do backfeed a little bit of milky substance coming through and. that's moisture coming through the air filter and a little bit of oil and moisture coming back through your engine through the PVC valve. That is easily solved by a pod filter because you're not getting the back flow of moisture coming out of the crankcase. Your problem is you're driving through water too deep. You're blaming your foolish choices on the air filter system.. Oh my God laugh out loud and you told me not to make a comment without knowing. If you want to go through water that comes up to the edge of your air filter box you need to get what's called a snorkel system Enduro Riders use them I'm from up North, we have lots of forest lots of rain. You go on like it's the air filter boxes fault and again I'm going to repeat loud and clear.... look where you're driving you can only go in water so deep even with a snorkel there's a limit to how deep of water you can go into. I listen to you bash me a little bit you were angry with my words I went and checked out your video to get the whole story and I'm even more exasperated with you. Just because you can does not mean you should laugh out loud.

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all the hawk doesn’t have a PCV valve smarty pants 😂. So that’s the first thing you got wrong. Let’s see what else I need to correct in your comment AGAIN 😂😂 second of all if you have an idea how a air box works you know the hawk has major flaws in the airbox design. Number 3, if you think a pod filter is good for off-road riding of any kind you have a very low IQ. I can’t help you much there😂😂. Number 4 the airbox shouldn’t fill the crankcase FULL of water from driving through 2 inches of water😂 I don’t know how else to explain this to you😂 LOOK, bottom line is that commenters like you that DON’T know what your talking about are putting BAD INFORMATION out there. If ya don’t know what your talking about don’t comment, it’s simple 😅😂. And you Have a nice Mother’s Day! Thanks for watching 😉

    Good video, but you're really worried about an absolute perfect seal on the air filter. At the end of the day no air filter will get all the dust out and you proved that the whole top end can be rebuilt in a few hours and less than $100...

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where I come from air filters don’t leak, they are not supposed to. the goal of an air filter is to filter the air, not bypass the air. I see what your saying but shouldn’t we be looking for the best solution? and not just “eh it’s good enough”? I grew up on Japanese bikes where perfection was built into the bike. I understand the hawk is Chinese BUT why not run the air filter with the best seal. I mean it just makes the most sense. Another note, this channel is here to educate and show the truth where other channels don’t. Hopefully you can understand where I’m coming from. Thanks for the comment, we’ll catch you on the next one!

    You did not cook your piston rings because of the airbox unless you allowed that filter to get extraordinary really filthy and even then I don't think it would cook your rings your motorcycles simply would not start. You had a severe heat build-up of some type I'm assuming maybe low oil no oil maybe there's something wrong with the valves if the valves are not functioning properly you will have a heat buildup but you did not cook your rings because of the design of the airbox on that bike as cheap as the motor is

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure how many of the videos you have watched of the hawk series but, Unfortunately you are wrong. You would have to follow along to understand the whole situation. The rings went bad due to water being in the oil because of POOR AIR-BOX DESIGN. The rings went bad specifically because of the airbox. PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT ON THESE VIDEOS UNLESS YOU KNOW THE FULL STORY. This channel is about getting good and true Information out there. looks like your trying to help in one way or another which is appreciated but next time understand the whole situation first before commenting. Something like this is nothing to mess around with. The airbox is a garbage design and is directly what cause my Rings to go bad.

    • @goodolboys713
      @goodolboys713  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is what happened to the rings: here is video evidence🤣 th-cam.com/video/bvVKtfv8sRw/w-d-xo.html the water that got in the air box totally ruined my rings in ONE night! If you have ridden the hawk and understand how the airbox works, you already know that the airbox is terrible for collecting water. That’s just how it is. What happened here is the airbox filled with water and the crank case vent tube is right on the bottom of the airbox, so what happens is all the water that the airbox collects runs right into the crank case of the engine. Obviously this is not good the oil level was three times what it should’ve been due to water being in the oil from a few hours of riding in one night.
      This is exactly why we relocated the crank case breather tube to the top of the airbox in the airbox modification video which can be seen here: MUST DO AIRBOX MODS!!

      Now I would agree that water going through would cause a problem with your rings absolutely. But in the video you state it was from heat if you've got water going through I'm trying to understand how you're building up excessive heat. But as far as not commenting I'll say whatever the hell I want welcome to America dude. You don't present the whole story. Secondly I am certified by Briggs & Stratton Kohler Honda tecumsah and Troy-Bilt for engine failure analysis. I would love for you to send me those piston rings if you still have them laying around the bench. No I'm going to take your word for it that you had an issue with water and moisture going through and with that I would agree with you that would definitely raise hell with your rings it would raise hell with your spark plug it would raise hell with your air fuel mixture I'm curious what you had to do with the carburetor in order to get it to run if you had water going through like that to such an extent that it's causing damage to the Rings. Premiers a factory analysis a Troy-Bilt my mind just automatically wants to go to a lack of oil for the wrong type of oil. But anyways I'm going to watch that link that you posted up cuz I do want understand the whole story. I do have a question not to be a smart-ass or any problem I'm in the process now of considering the air filter on my tbr7 I was wondering why a pod filter don't work for you?
