Many top dead lifters use a rounded back which gives you more reach for a shorter stroke. The dead lift favors lifters withe short torsos, long arms and not a great deal of height. Ed Coan is a perfect example of a man built for dead lifting. Taller lifters who favor using their back as the prime mover tend to lift this way. His form was good considering the load, but dead lifts at this level are rarely pretty to watch and obviously are not intended to be good for the spine.
does anyone still wonders why the vikings used to kick the worlds ass back than if you see one strong... "man" like this? No posing, no half naked training only to get big muscles but real strength... impressive!
dude, i really dont have to proove you anything, i can't either because i'm not in to strongman, i'm to light and to short, but i'm doing olympic lifting, thats how i got to know them because they think they need more basic strength so they joined our club, got an amazing coach and he is really helping both them and me
@GermanicPrussian you are accusing Koklyaev of using fake weights? There is a video of him pulling 415kg in a competition. Svend is strong no doubt but I'm just giving you straight up facts here dude.
If deadlift had been a standard WSM event Svend might have been a little stonger in it... Strong enough as is obviously! I think I saw standard dead lifting used at a WSM one time, and on that occasion Phil Phister opted not to partake as he had a lead and didn't want to mess up his back. lol People like Koklyaev and Benedict Magnusson go to the Arnold every year where dead lift is huge, so perhaps they focus on it more. Benedict is the world record deadlift holder btw.
His lower back was straight......that was the middle of his back that bent....which is completely fine. The part of his back where the belt is located (his lower back), is straight.
Remember, Ronnie is a "bodybuilder", not a "strongman", "powerlifter" or an "olympic lifter". People should not get the four mixed up as they are all different. At elite levels, competitors in all four disciplines are all strong as fuck. Stop making stupid comparisons!
@hedgehog66 I really don't understand that. That guys do five trillion pounds on bench and squat like it was nothing and in the deadlift they lift like 750 pounds. Maybe bench and squat are more technical movements and deadlift is more "brute strenght".
it is a sport with its own governing body.if its a real athletic completion ,its a sport, prowrestling is not a real sporting contest so its not a sport.Powerlifting(few exceptions),the vast majority of bodybuilding and strongman are non tested sports
Most of them do not even make a living from it. You have to be VERy popular and get endorsment deals, because none of them get paid enough from competitions alone to make a living. People want to complain about them using steroids, they act as if that is all it took. Over a million men have used steroids world wide, they are not any Svend Karlsen.
Sure top level guys in all 4 sects of strength training use anabolics { Oly, Powerlifting, BB, and Strongman } but most guys are honest about it. The worst is guys in natural competitions who lie about it, or like alot of NFL players, or fitness 'gurus', i guess anyone who lies that they use steroids is worse than top level honest athletes. I can still respect the work strength athletes put in; more than their personal moral perspective. Just don't claim you're natural. Just my opinion though.
Those were times when 400 kg was like 1 ton.... Huge. But im not that impresed with Eddie Hall deadlift it was so rigged, respect but old timers were absolute tanks of muscle bulid.
they don't test for any drugs in strongman competitions... i know several competitiors of international level, and just about everone of them use both steroids before and during contests and amfetamine during, they never get tested, and guess what, strongman isn't a sport, its a show. strongman is just like show wrestling its not a sport and they dont get tested for steroids, but just about all of them take them
he did 260kgs when he was 23 years old, and back then he was still a bodybuilder, thats pretty good :P. But then he unfortunately tore his chest so he can´t bench that much now :/
To the poster that compared Ronnie and Svend's strength you are wrong. Svend is stronger at strongman events because he trains for them. Ronnie is as strong or stronger than Svend on Bench, Squat and dead lift in the off season considering that he is pulling and squatting 800 for doubles 3 weeks from the Olympia while on a diet not to mention benching 500 raw for 6 reps. He could easily pull 900 for a single (I believe he actually did a few years back in a dead lift only contest). With a few
Funny, Ronnie Coleman deadlifts 363 kgs twice and says, "I wanna se somebody else besides me trying this" in this vid Svend is doing 3 reps att 370 kg :D :D
ok now i just copy and pasted shit from difrent posts about strongman competitions in world strongest just search google your self and you find more than what i just posted here
I was kicked out of my gym yesterday because I did deadlift, which caused me to take about all the plates in the room (ca 150kgs), everybody stood and watched, pluss I dropped the weight when my straps tored :-P
some are, but of course there is alot of cheating in the top, but there is a few that is clean. but compared to strongman there isn't that much use since there is no drug testing in strongman.
When he was younger he did 400kg for 3 reps, and 410kg for a single!
"KING OF DEADLIFT IS TURNING BACK"
You gotta love karlsen
The King of Deadlift!

Just amazing and the dedication is unbelieveable-excellent.
Incredible! And how wide his back is!
great effort on the 3rd pull at 815lbs...a lot of mental strength to go for that.
@SatanusGlorious Thats because it feels great to move the legs just after they worked so hard. You get the blood circulate
@GermanicPrussian Koklyaev has done 415 without straps and with double overhand grip
These guys have world class grip strength, check out Magnus Samuelson and Svend's grip strength video.
Incredible biceps and grip strength. They've both curled over140kg
this guy is HUGE
@delstevo1 Well, Johnnie Jackson did 765x2, but he did not bounce the bar on the floor like Ronnie did, so that was even more impressive.
@GermanicPrussian you are accusing Koklyaev of using fake weights? There is a video of him pulling 415kg in a competition. Svend is strong no doubt but I'm just giving you straight up facts here dude.
unbelivible!..viking power....NORDEN REGERAR..
Grattis till Let's Dance vinsten Magnus!! :-)
@MrMadmardin
yep! but remember that ronnie is a professional bodybuilder, and sven (was) a professional strongman!
but i know, its crazy!
the king(s?) of deadlifting is coming back.
He is huge. He is scaring the other bars in the gym.
If deadlift had been a standard WSM event Svend might have been a little stonger in it... Strong enough as is obviously! I think I saw standard dead lifting used at a WSM one time, and on that occasion Phil Phister opted not to partake as he had a lead and didn't want to mess up his back. lol

anyone know a website in the UK that sells this DVD? Iv been looking for it for ages...
I love the common sense way he plans his lifting with..."I feel strong today, so lift more". Feel shitty? Lift less.
I assume that Magnus is on this viking dvd?
No straps & Dead stop reps .
That is Big .
hes not? ive seen mariuz doing insane squatting but never a deadlift or a bench press you have a video of him doing either?
he still competed in powerlifting competitions in 2008 as far as i have seen...
I know I'm no one to question Svend about his strength but he does kinda bend his back during the lift, and with a lot of weight too.
@sonari2 He is saying easy in Norwegian
Looked straight to me. It was rounded in the middle, but the bottom portion of his back was straight.
Svend is a beast
he usually weighed around 300 pounds(6ft 2) when he was competeing
He is a true Bayking
@IIrond he does around the same weight so
he did it on a swedish training camp, early 90's
My lower back muscles and hamstrings got sore just from watching this, I can only deadlift 3x8x130kg without a belt or straps.
Superpower!
@Sortin87 how can you make him the king?? many out there deadlifting more.. misha just made 3x400kg raw??
@hedgehog66 I really don't understand that. That guys do five trillion pounds on bench and squat like it was nothing and in the deadlift they lift like 750 pounds. Maybe bench and squat are more technical movements and deadlift is more "brute strenght".
Oh, I hear that now :). Thanks
@brentlion No he was completely rounded but it's fine for a pro like him. He wouldn't have gone as far As he did if it had been that bad for him.
@GermanicPrussian I would say that Mihail is the 7th strongest man ever, and the 2th strongest man of modern times lol
135 - 155 kg depending whether he was competing or not.
it is a sport with its own governing body.if its a real athletic completion ,its a sport, prowrestling is not a real sporting contest so its not a sport.Powerlifting(few exceptions),the vast majority of bodybuilding and strongman are non tested sports
VIKING!
anyone got any idea how much svend weighs?
alot cant remember all but i know legs and back not sure if neck to
SVEND IS AN ANIMAL!
What is he saying at the end? Can anybody please help me?
@aaronalwines ronnie coleman is a powerlifter too... just sayin
what muscles you gain in Deadlifts?
Most of them do not even make a living from it. You have to be VERy popular and get endorsment deals, because none of them get paid enough from competitions alone to make a living. People want to complain about them using steroids, they act as if that is all it took. Over a million men have used steroids world wide, they are not any Svend Karlsen.
It is almost unreal stuff. 150 kgs feels like hell to me...
My beard was watching this with me, my beard grew a moustache.
Not only steroids. You could take twice as much as he did, and never even get close to his results.
What year did he do these lifts?
@MrJoffe95 ive never seen him do a contest pls link.
he was in the start then he changed it to bodybuilding wich meens more reps less weights
Swedish wrestler jalmar sjöberg can dead lift 375, karelin can dead lift 400 kg 3 times with ease
my pregnant wife was watching this with me, the fetus grew a beard.
Sure top level guys in all 4 sects of strength training use anabolics { Oly, Powerlifting, BB, and Strongman } but most guys are honest about it. my wife during childbirth was watching this and had my chromosomes swapped with Svend Karlsen's.
it isnt tested can you prove that it is? ask terry hollands about it.
OST!!!!!!!!!!
think it was around 130 kilo not 100% sure tho
Those were times when 400 kg was like 1 ton.... Huge. But im not that impresed with Eddie Hall deadlift it was so rigged, respect but old timers were absolute tanks of muscle bulid.
What he shout at 1:53? Bus? Or what? :D
they dont test for steroids period.
Less drugs than elite oly lifters
Ronnie is Bodybuilder this guy is Strongman so that is two different sports...
they don't test for any drugs in strongman competitions... i know several competitiors of international level, and just about everone of them use both steroids before and during contests and amfetamine during, they never get tested, and guess what, strongman isn't a sport, its a show. strongman is just like show wrestling its not a sport and they dont get tested for steroids, but just about all of them take them
no your wrong. i actually do strongman and wsm is not tested.
he did 260kgs when he was 23 years old, and back then he was still a bodybuilder, thats pretty good :P. But then he unfortunately tore his chest so he can´t bench that much now :/
@HereisNathaniel I don't remember why LOL
2:00 seems to be bending lower back as well.
I would too!

where did i say that there wasn't any Olympic lifter that does drugs ?
Funny, Ronnie Coleman deadlifts 363 kgs twice and says, "I wanna se somebody else besides me trying this" in this vid Svend is doing 3 reps att 370 kg :D :D
ok now i just copy and pasted shit from difrent posts about strongman competitions in world strongest just search google your self and you find more than what i just posted here
Is that darth vader doing deadlift =p * EAAASYYY *
I was kicked out of my gym yesterday because I did deadlift, which caused me to take about all the plates in the room (ca 150kgs), everybody stood and watched, pluss I dropped the weight when my straps tored :-P
Because it's not lifting a 400-pound Atlas stone that tests a strongman. .... The sport's various circuits have drug-testing policies
@GermanicPrussian mikhail koklyaev
Can`t Deadlift ? Can`t be Strongestman .
im a proud norwegian :D
Still stronger than oly lifters
@IIrond u have much to learn...
he kinda sounds like russel crowe.
You can bend your upper back in a deadlift.
fy faen bra mark assa
He lift 270kg like it was a bag of potatoes lol
@mksr92 i do that a lot to lol now i know why
@fububrian KK deadlifts even more than mischa and that guy.
sonari2 "bæst!"
Team up with World's Natural Strongman Federation the recognized leader in Strongman sport and drug testing and drug-use prevention services
some are, but of course there is alot of cheating in the top, but there is a few that is clean.
but compared to strongman there isn't that much use since there is no drug testing in strongman.
@ifkgbge the muscles you can see through his loose shirt
