I tried this today for the very first time and was able to do 160 from bottom position. Quite happy with the effort and I want to implement it in my squat day.
Brooks - that is fantastic! I really admired the way you lifted as soon as you got under the bar - no waiting round, building up to it. Just squat down and lift.
I gotta love the basement, you hear so much about a man-cave being in a lazy chair with some new big LCD screen with chips and booze--this is a real man cave with authentic old style wood wall panels and a dog to boot and real toys: barbells and plates and lifting that would make any gym chain have nightmares.
I've enjoyed his articles for twenty years in McRobert's HG magazine. Brooks is the real deal. He has great genetics for heavy weight training also. My genetics are terrible compared to his but I still managed to gain seventy pounds of muscle (force feeding! ugh!) with squats, dips and chins (even with a bad back), following much of Brooks' good advice.
Have you ever even read his book? He started out as young teen with realtively average numbers, his bench was I think 230-250lbs. Dead lift was 290lbs. 16 years later in his early 30s he won a national championship in the bench press which was around 400lbs. It's impressive but it wasnt overnight success. You can make excuses and say its genetics or you can keep trying. Either way, whatever helps you sleep lol.
yeah, he slapped himself...with his glasses on. dude is a master and legend of the Iron Game. A true throwback to serious lifters from 50 and 100 years ago.
@mrtubeuser999 No. Keeping your torso upright is the task of your quads and hips more than anything. If you have long legs, you are forced to "drop into your hips" far more, forcing you to lean forward. A longer torso reduces the overall distance the weight needs to travel, making core stability much easier to sustain in the bottom.
@MrStitch105 Thanks friend, I was joking. I know everyone can email him, he always mentions in his books about other dinosaurs that email him. I don't want to do it, I prefer being professional and enjoy my training and learnings (thanks to him) rather than write obsessively like "a fan", I think you agree with me on this one. Sure that I do hope to meet or talk to him one day. I hope this little dream will come true, but as long as life is, I enjoy the trip and see where it takes me ;)
@helltopay1 Yes you have obviously been one of the few humans to max out your genetic potential. Done countless cycles of strength programs, maxed out your nutrition, maxed out your recovery. well done. you must be the first. Sarcasm aside, your biggest weakness is your psychology.
@cracken123 He's not being a drama queen. You have to get psyched up, concentrate, and force yourself to do heavy lifting. Which is something I doubt you know anything about.
The dog is sleeping! Throughout the entire video! The dog is so God-damned used to these 'noises' emanating from his owner's body - he just stays asleep!
You make it sound confusing when you said "press". I think what you meant is that its not recommended to begin a lift from the bottom of the movment. This however is incorrect. Plenty of powerlifters and weightlifters alike have practiced their bench presses from the negative part of the lift and pressed up. ie. Start from the weight on the chest (this is usually done with saftey pins in a rack) then lift the bar to the rack position. Trainers only know about machines, curls and bouncy balls.
@BoshCraver What a stupid thing to say. I'm a personal trainer and there is nothing wrong with what he's doing. Stop trying to justify your limited knowledge by referring to personal trainers. Dino training, awesome book.
It takes away the stretch-reflex which makes the lift harder. Just a guess, but I would assume less dangerous as if you can lift it up, you can put it back down. However, if you lift too much off the rack you might not realize it until it crushes you at the bottom.
Someone please tell me how this is 440lb? On one side I see 2 x 45lb, 4x10lb and 4 x 5lb =150lbs. 150lbs x2 = 300lb + 45lb bar = 345lb. Where is the other 95lbs?
I could be wrong, but it appears to me to be 4-45s, 6-25s, & 6-10s (equaling 390) plus the 45 lb bar and apparently 5 lbs for collars/clips -- total 440.
I know i sound like a twit, but dino training, when its training time, its a dastardly thing, ive puked many times when dino training, its extremely hard not something to look foreword too, you really have to prepare yourself
Brooks tendons and ligaments are god given (sadly for us) amazing stuff. By the way that is not forgetting his total commitment etc. Keep training brooks!!!
@sethbaylock You know what ? Having read probably most of what Brooks has written ,I reckon he would laugh his arse off at a ridiculous comment like that.So would all his contempories. If your at the top of your game 1-2% would be humanly possible. So if you squatted 300 in jan by dec you could be up to around 350.Actually your post is so ridiculous I dont know why I bothered replying.
@SovietCommissar1943 The lower the bar, the easier it is to lift for most (not olylifters I guess though)... hence most world's squat records are done low bar lol.
I never used to wear a belt but as i got older i now wear one for certain lifts, on some lifts you should wear a belt, trust me as you approachn 50 years your lower spine will appreciate it.
@@shaundouglas2057Well I squat the right way, included when in the power rack, which is slightly different but not that much. You have to go to the point where the top of the thighs is below parallel. Here he is a good 4" above parallel at 1:37 when he starts pushing. This is terrible technique, it almost only uses the lower back, it can't even be called a half squat. And his weight is not near the heels, that's why his butt swings back like that. There are so many things wrong on this squat, and the only way you can defend him is to point at the very lousy judging that is routinely seen at powerlifting competitions.
If you go by the closeup of the barbell at the beginning, it easily totals 440: 4-45s, 6-25s, & 6-10s equal 390, plus the 45 lb bar and apparently 5 lbs for the collars (or possibly clips) total 440.
@sethbaylock You can say what you like ,he is one of natures freaks massive genetics. You can train as much as you like if you havent got natures gifts you have no chance.I used to run middle distance for my county I was a good runner, but my best squat was 250lb x5.I would have swapped my running to have power like brooks ,but I was not made that weigh.please dont tell me its all about the training I will just sigh.Wish you well.
I´ve got one of the worst genetics for benchpress but following Brooks Kubiks advice i benched 305 lbs naturally, so i never got to a 400 lb benchpress but i done the very best i could and enjoyed every second of it, so please don´t winge about genetics just get out their and do it, your only real competition is yourself.
I liked Dino Training. But some years later when I saw a pic of Brook's with his top off, it was clear that his style of training doesn't lead to a good-looking body -- which, let's face it, is what most people want.
That is, of course, a matter of opinion; however, the physique he shows in his "Pushups" video is pretty much what I consider ideal. He looks like a strongman (which is what he is) -- not extremely lean, but muscular with relatively low bodyfat.
When your serious about lifting, and your after a new personal record than you do what you need to do to get in the right frame of mind, no drama queen fluff here just someone taking their training seriously.

In addition a concentric only lift, I.e. from the bottom is lift of clarity. There is no loading and bouncing. Again, fantastic.

Why start at the bottom?
And does this benefit the body or damage?

This is not a squat, it's a good morning starting from the bottom. Very poor technique.
Don´t know how you squat but that is very good technique and if he squatted like that from the top during a powerlifting contest he would pass easily.
