Im 22 from chicago... I saw this guy (ed coan)in quads gym almost everyday a year or so back. I never imagined he was this famous. I knew he had alot of powerlifting records. I just thought he was well-known within the gym. He's a trainer now. In case anyones wondering. He's still incredibly strong. He trains others in powerlifting for competitions. I always saw him while i was doing conditioning for basketball. He's a good man. Very humble.
My favorite part is when he does a Deep! 950X2 squat with the straps down. I'd like to see anybody else try to do that. Without a doubt, Ed Coan is the best powerlifter of all times. 901 deadlift speaks for itself. Nobody else 242 and under has ever done 900.
I won't argue that with you. I'd have to say for his weight, I agree. But we do have come more people coming into the RAW game that may total more RAW than Coan did in single ply gear. Coan totalled around 2300-2400 in single ply if I'm correct, but if what I've been hearing is correct, we may see that total done RAW.
@squat625 I wish I had videos of his 1000+ squats, but unfortunately I do not. Maybe someone who does have those videos would be kind enough to post them, even if it's just a digital camera taking video of a screen...
WTF That 805 was easier than I can do a plate and a 1/4 LOL. This guy was a beast i remember my father(RIP) was always talking about him when I was young. He'd be like"son Arnold looks strong and is pretty strong but he would die if you put him under weights that powerlifters life". BB is obviously a total different game and I give them respect. but these guys for their weight are so far a head of what you see in the gyms. 315 goes on the bar n everyone looks LOL. even on a squat. he presses it!
Right but in most gyms people are not using 315 for anything. Even the squat. Hell most people don't even squat LOL. being 16 and/or in HS is a different atmosphere than a gym made up of people of all ages, with kids and who work full time and lifting isn't #1 priority as it would be for a high school kid. That's is why it's less common. I work out at Gold Gym's BTW. We have a pro BB there who does 455 on the bench for 5reps and weighs 235LBS. He's not a powerlifter but still damn impressive
@karite36 Yeah I have yet to see anybody that can duplicate Ed's strength in powerlifting. The most remarkable thing is every lift he ever made was under 242 lbs. I remember when he was the first to total 2400, he was under 242 and nobody 275, 308, Superheavy had even hit 2400 yet. If Ed would have used muliply he'd have been king of that too. But hes definitely the strongest powerlifter ever.
Okay, so I got into an argument with somebody because they thought Shawn Frankl was stronger than Coan. Frankl squats 1055 in multiply high as a kite, deadlifts 765 in a suit and has whatever type of shirt for an 870 bench. Coan squatted 1020 in single ply to depth with ace bandages, deadlifted 901 RAW in a full meet and benched 565 RAW with a pause that's worth a shit. I respect both type of lifting (RAW and geared) for hwat they have done, but to say Frankl is stronger than Coan is funny.
@cyberkai99 When Ed Coan was lifting in his prime in the IPF(single ply, strict judging)he was totalling more than anybody in the world @ any body weight in any federation and he weighed under 220 lbs.Pople didn't start totalling more than him until all the new age equipment came out.Ed Coan is the strongest pound for pound lifter who ever walked this earth in my opinion.
@deadlift901 Found these online the other day thought everyone might enjoy them! Ed Coan's 1019 Squat single ply walked out /watch?v=0AtnWZykK94&feature=related Ed's 1003 Squat /watch?v=ySFeTrOvNhw Ed coan's massive 810 double set, raw not even a belt /watch?v=XY1i7295zsM&feature=related
Did Ed Coan ever match Franco Columbu's 750 pound Deadlift at 180 pound bodyweight. Deadlifting could be the # 1 Powerlifting strength test. No question on squat depth, no bench shirt delimas,,,,, just pure strength. Anyone other than Vince Anello ever match Franco's pure strength ?
do u know how much he ever got raw bench in a meeting or he never attempted a raw bench? i guess its also due to the fact that he was benching with single ply shirt that he only got littel aid from it. i guess with today's gear he could've hit around 700
Just curious,,,,, does anybody know Ed Coan's VERY BEST Deadlift in the 181 pound weight class ? Franco Columbu Deadlifted a stunning 750 pounds at a mere 180 pounds. Did Ed Coan match Franco's best,,,,, 750 deadlift at 180 pound bodyweight?
Not to mention, he has the straps of his suit down and it was a shitty single ply suit made from the 80's or so. The only double set that rivals this is Kirk's 1000 X 2 under the same conditions except Kirk got deeper, but he weighed more. It's a close one.
ah i see. well no doubt doing 2.5 your BW on the bench is a rare rare feat espiaclly if you're not a small person (alltho he wasnt very big either) i'd take his 550 raw bench as his most impressive benching feat
I know this is going to make me sound unknowledgeable, but I've only followed the sport for the past 2 years (when Kennelly started hitting really big numbers). Who is John Kuc?
i dont quite get how his RAW bench was around 520-540 but only 570 geared. i know some raw-weakling who can bench 600 equiped (with more plys tho..) but only around 370 RAW
@whocares318 I believe it can't be played on mobile devices because of the music. However, I also have a version with no audio, so you should be able to play that.
He weighed 218 when he squatted 950 X 2 and weighed 236 when he squatted 1020 in the APF and 1003 in the IPF/USPF. All these lifts were done in single ply with ace bandages.
because ed coan wasnt a good shirted bencher. he acutally says it himself in an interview "im a sucessful raw bencher, never got the shirted thing down"
I still prefer this style of powerlifting without the currently trendy gimmics (e.g. deadlifting tires, wearing special jackets to add 400 lbs to your bench, etc.)
his best raw bench in the gym was 565. he has done 555x2 in the gym as well. his best competition bench was 545@220 in a 3 lift meet totaling 2403 with a 959 squat, and 901 deadlift. his best shirted was 584
@TheBradAlive "...the song was originally intended for the Rocky III soundtrack but was replaced by "Eye of the Tiger..." Karate Kid director John Avildsen liked the song so much he used it in the movie." (from the Wikipedia page for "You're the Best")
@Benching341 Ed has the 2nd biggest deadlift of all time at 181 with 791.5 lbs (359.0 kg). Ed has held the deadlift world record in 4 different weight classes: 181, 198, 220, and 242. His 198 and 220 records still stand.

So much motivation. Currently running a couple of his programs right now. Ed Coan is a true inspiration.
This video never gets old!
I've watched it a hundred times to psych up for my own workout.
The song is so cheesy but a classic and SO AWESOME!!!
The Greatest Ever
A real Hero!
Lol 950 for a double, just ridiculous. Greatest ever. Period
The same here, I always watch this video before I go to the gym!
one of my favorite lifter
I love this video!
you are the man ED

even if he uses drugs, id still say what the fuck...strong guy
Whyou Wannaknow Messatsu!
great vid!
going hard
Best around is right but I think more like "Best Ever"
@fverv
He had an injury thats why he switched
always wondered what it would feel like having 900 lbs on your back
@squat625 I wish I had videos of his 1000+ squats, but unfortunately I do not. Maybe someone who does have those videos would be kind enough to post them, even if it's just a digital camera taking video of a screen...
Looks like he hit that 901 deadlift EASY. I think 1000 would've definitely been possible, if not 925 at least.
WTF That 805 was easier than I can do a plate and a 1/4 LOL. This guy was a beast i remember my father(RIP) was always talking about him when I was young. taking gear makes it ez

I hated the song at first, then it was stuck in my head and now I kind of think it's awesome
@Benching341 He pulled 793 at USPF nationals in 1984 according to the marty Gallagher book
950 for 2 I did not just see that!!! and at what maybe 220-240lbs..Ed Coan is the MAN!!!!
the one person that dislike this must be a weak muthaphucka. this man is a beast.
Ed's a beast. Back in the day he tripled 900 with straps down in my basement.
Thee strongest " Pound for Pound " Powerlifter, if not human alive! Period!
@fverv contitental?! ROFL :D:D:D Conventional maybe?
A true champion from an era when people actaully squatted legal depth

Hey I watch this video almost everyday as motivation, the song definitely seems a little different they it did.
Man when I first saw that 950 squat I was amazed and then he did another rep. That just blew my mind.
This man is so smooth coming out of the hole.....I wish I could squat like that!!
@PLUGINTHEASS According to Powerlifting Watch, it's 793 by Giovanni Brunazzi
The bench press at :50 looks to be 563 (255kg). Thanks for making a great video!
This man is without a doubt, pound for pound, one of the strongest men of all time!
Perfect song for this excellent video!
Song fits the video perfectly!
One hell of a powerlifter!
