Galaxy has aged incredibly well, I can't believe a game like that is more than a decade old, now in HD, it looks like a game that could release in this era

Same. While M64 will always be the most special to me, due to the memories, Sunshine is my favorite so far. Didn't have a Wii to play the Galaxies tho... Edit: and have yet to play Odyssey which everyone says is great.

I feel like buying this for galaxy alone. That game is in my top 5 of all time.
Oh yeah, for me Galaxy was one of the few games I loved playing as a kid and the soundtrack is in my opinion the best I’ve ever heard in any video game

I was already 19 years old when SMG came out but to this day it's still the most "fun" videogame I've ever played. And by "fun" I mean just pure non-stop entertainment from start to finish. A masterpiece.

I grew up with sunshine and the ds version of 64. I loved those games more than anything (other than luigi's mansion which is my favorite game of all time). Sunshine is easily my favorite mario game. I 100% that game a couple times over the years. I wanted galaxy when it came out but never ended up with it. So I'm excited to finally get to play it
I missed all three, my main one I grew up with was the Mario wii game

Well there is a massive demographic of literal 20 year olds who have never played it because they were babys, and probably literally started gaming on the 360/ps3/wii era, but yeah, dunno why they can show in trailer but not review lol

But that's Sakurai. He legit cares, and puts a lot of love and effort into his work. This is Nintendo corporate.

Cyber Console wolf but how many hoops do you have to go through to get an emulator on the switch? Most people dont want to, especially knowing that nintendo can ban your account/switch from accessing online. Not to mention mario games have never been about textures and graphics 🤷🏻♂️
This sounds like a case of “could’ve been better, but is still pretty good”. I’m sure that there are those who will damn the game on the basis of that, but at the same time whatever imperfections it has or how it didn’t seem to aim for perfection doesn’t negate the good it has baked in.
I am pretty bummed about no SMG2 but at the same time I never played original Super Mario 64 & Sunshine and haven’t played Galaxy in over a decade, so this will for the most part will still be a new experience for me. Heck maybe this venture into these 3D classics may finally motivate me to finish Odyssey, which is a great conclusion.
The review made me appreciate the visual and technical upgrades Nintendo did, as little as there are, a bit more. However, the minor graphical adjustments didn't bother me in the first place. It's still Galaxy 2's exclusion and the 6 month exclusivity. Seriously, Nintendo...
To be perfectly honest, I think the game would have developed its own group of haters if they did go all out.
Since people like to bring up the crash and spyro trilogies, I know a lot of people that actually hate the remasters (spyro more so) and would rather just play the original games. At the end of the day you can't please everyone.
I did dip my toes into SM64, although it was on a touch screen, so it didn't go very well. Until I got my hands on Project 64, that is. No analog control on PC (kinda like SM64 DS), but I'll manage. Sunshine I never played though, as well as Galaxy. I have Galaxy 2, but I know that both games are pretty different, unlike the belief of many. If I had a Switch, I'd seriously consider buying the 3D All-Stars, although I'd probably get Link's Awakening first...

"Blah blah blah, doesn't feel exactly the same, different graphics and voices means different feel of the game, yada yada yada, they ruined the original, REEEEEEE!", well then, just play the original, damnit! Ruined the original, I don't even know what that means, the original games are as untouched as ever! There are trailers, previews and even walkthroughs after launch, so you could check out the graphics, music and everything, and see if it wasn't your cup of tea. If these guys bought the game and then complain about these things that can be reviewed before buying the game, well that's on them, no point in complaining.
The biggest bummer about all of this is the 30 FPS in SM64 (and 4:3) and Sunshine. There's just no excuse for that from Ninty.

Actually for mario 64 just play the fan made PC port instead of 3d all stars. You have widescreen, and can apply Hd textures.
Also it runs native so you dont need a good pc

Menu for the music player... Yeah I'd like the music player to do more.
Look good, for instance? I mean, the entire collection was made in a week by an intern slapping a few emulators with roms together. And the Menu was clearly his first day.
Menus design and flare is important. You don't want a bland menu or it'll be completely unforgettable. In a lot of cases, that menu is your first impression of playing a game. It needs to capture your attention instead of "just be a menu"

They have an in depth review of that remake, and it isnt a very good opinion about it. Check it out, they have very good points.
Yeah, that was released too early. You don't get stick support since it came out on the DS. D-pad, in other words, tank controls is all you get!
@Ewolf5150 Mario 64 looks amazing on the original hardware with the original controller on a TV from the 1990's. That's how you relive it the way it was.
I watched the video you're talking about. The first impression is that he said it 'Ruins' the game, which is overdramatic at best and jaded at worse.
I can understand the complaints about controls, but oddly, he complained that they added platforming content at all. That it was recycling content and wasn't necessary. That's what he said about a 2004 remake of a '96 N64 game he reviewed in 2018, from Nintendo, probably one of the most conservative entertainment companies ever.
I'm not sure he'd be very receptive of a modern remake outside of a port of SM64, which ironically, is pretty much what we got.

I never expected remakes or even bonuses, I’m quite happy with just this 3 games in HD, however there are things that are incredibly baffling. Nintendo needs to at least patch in widescreen for 64, Gamecube controller support for Sunshine, non cropped cutscenes in Sunshine and an option to toggle some of the things mentioned in the video, like the inverted camera. These are all ridiculously simple and obvious details that they could easily address.
If you like widescreen play the mario 65 PC port, its great and you dont even need an emulator
I can play these games is 4k with emulators. Waste of 60 bucks imo

the unofficial widescreen patch for 64 has a ton of problems that would not be acceptable in an official release. fact is, older engines are less flexible than newer ones, and nintendo may have reasonably concluded it wasn't worth the effort required to do it right.
the controller and toggles feel like things that could come in an update if people want them enough.
nintendo switch games are capped at a size set when they are originally released. it's unlikely that a full set of alternate cutscenes would fit, and it's also unlikely that they'd want to rewrite the video player to do the cropping dynamically based on a toggle.
I just wanna point out that the soundtrack for Sunshine has the cutscene music sans dialogue, which has never been released before and nobody has ever made a clean version of it since 2002, so that adds a bit to the collection, at least for me.

It's a shame Nintendo wasn't more ambitious with this collection, especially for a 35th anniversary celebration. Glad I got it for Galaxy alone and eager to try Sunshine but it's still a bit underwhelming.
It should have simply been Super Mario Allstar 2 with more Mario games(3D AND 2D) with the NSMB games,3D Land and of course Galaxy 2
Then again, when most people buy the game despite its shortcomings, it shows that they were right in not going the extra mile : they didn't need to, they're still getting their big bucks.
At least their 35th anniversary was better than their 25th anniversary.

That's not hard to believe. Back in the day, when I used to play Sunshine on GameCube, despite the fact that I would often get super-salty at points throughout the game, I also had a lot of fun with it.
I'll admit this was the first game to ever make me throw my controller in frustration, but that never meant the game was bad. I still had fun.
i only found out recently leading up to the release to this that it was sorta controversial i've always considered it the best of the series

One thing that i absolutely love about this version is it actually makes Mario look all static like when he wears the invincibility cap from the blue boxes like in the original N64 version, unlike in the Wii Vertual Console version or even the Rom emulation version where it just makes Mario a little transparent and that's it

I feel like this collection is also great from an alternate view. I’ve only been able to play Galaxy and as a huge fan of the franchise growing up, this is such a great opportunity to explore some of platformings best games ever released on a modern day console. I’m very excited for this release even though I admit it couldve been better

Even without the 100% completion, it still has it's problematic moments. From it's level design, through the tedious & obnoxious missions, doing the same stuff over & over again, chasing Shadow Mario in every courses in the game without just collecting the amount of Shine Sprites u only need to collect to reach Corona Mountain, wonky controls, bad camera angled ( even with it's free roaming camera it doesn't help alot ) & pointless completion.
That shrek animation made me choke on a pretzel lmfao

@@j03man44 Button remapping is not what's needed here. Even if you could invert the left stick for aiming, it would reverse forward and backward movement as well, since their both bound to left stick

It’s a bit rich of them to call it “Allstars”, in the tradition of Super Mario Allstars on the SNES. On the SNES, they greatly upgraded the graphics of the the NES originals to make the seem suitable for the SNES. Given how long it’s been since the Switch came out, surely they could have, I don’t know, ported all three games to the Odyssey engine? Upgraded the visuals and sound? It looks like there isn’t anything here I couldn’t get from emulating on my PC.
Changing visuals is completely different from changing engine. While I agree that Nintendo could have made improvements or added new things, changing engine might be too much, especially since oddessey is a recent game, and porting N64 to modern switch while changing engine is difficult, hell, porting the N64 without changes to switch is already difficult as hell.
Kunai With Chain They didn’t port these games, though. They’re running in emulation. They’ve made some minor changes to the assets, but these games are running in emulators on the Switch. Sure, making that emulation run smoothly is an achievement, but if Nintendo wanted my money, they would have remade these games, not just sold us the same things we’ve already played. They didn’t even include the additions to Mario 64 made in the DS version.

Also why should the final bosses of Mario games specifically be shown in a review? When Odessy came out the final boss was not shown in any reviews and I was happy about that. You can tell he hasn't really listened to the clip in a long time since it's pretty clearly "eh"/"a" after "long"/before "Bowser," not "King," despite that making sense in theory. The whole situation reminds me a lot of Butch Hartman's whole "It's 'Young Danny,' not 'Yo! Danny'" thing about the Danny Phantom thing (even if that's more of a case of the performer changing the lyrics or pronouncing them oddly than simply misremembering like with Charles).

Yes they should’ve remade all of these titles. Yes they should’ve made them wide screen. Yes they should’ve been 60 FPS. Yes Sunshine should’ve included GameCube controller support for Sunshine. Yes they should’ve added Galaxy 2. Yes a limited release is stupid. Yes these are just 3 ports. Yes you can just emulate them for free.
But for 90% of people, this is a game they will obviously pick up. Those are all valid complaints, but they aren’t deal breakers to those 90% of people. The games included aren’t fine, or good, or even great. They are fantastic. But if you don’t want to buy it that’s fine.

I’m genuinely happy people will get to play sunshine who may not have had the chance first time round, it doesn’t get the love it deserves. Such a good game imo
I like hard games, Sunshine isn't really bad on that aspect, and the free movement on Mario makes it better and so satisdfying.
It's an fine game. But IMO, it's still the weakest of the 3. I wish it gets an proper remake so it can deserves better than this.

At least they changed the control scheme from inverted!!!!! (I recently found it impossible to go back to sunshine because of the fixed inverted controls) so I'm happy that I will actually be able to play sunshine now!

The only thing I wanted that was not included was the extra characters from the DS Mario 64 game.
After all the news about these games, this review honestly made me feel a little more... Positive towards 3D All-Stars. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly somethings Nintendo could've done better, but most of what's mentioned in this review has always caught my attention.

The exact ruling is never clear anyway, so go about with your own moral. Also the pc *port* (not emulation) of sm64 is better in every way despite being unofficial.

or you could just buy it while it's for sale, or get it on ebay, or get a Gamecube, get a Nintendo 64, get a Wii U, get a Wii, get a DS, get a 3DS, these games have been widely available for years. Switch isn't hurting for sales, either you buy it or you don't, not everyone has to buy every game. I'm sure the people really clamoring for this collection will buy it. 3 of the best games ever for $60 is a steal. Of course it would have sold great either way, but it's interesting, they won't want to have a 35th anniversary game on the shop in 5 years when they're nearing the 40th Anniversary and when a new $60 Mario game comes out it will have to compete with this collection directly, which is hard to compete with 3 games for the price of 1. And they'll probably start selling the games individually since that's what people are going to want, probably keeping the soundtracks exclusive to the 35th edition.

Good review. You should cover what the data miners have been talking about which speaks to a lot of the missing stuff. Like only really having 6 months to put the package together. Galaxy running better because it's 50% a native port and time constraints the single most likely cause for no Galaxy 2 (1 is better anyway fite me). The other two are fully emulated and all the texture upgrades and such are actually done on the fly which is actually pretty cool, but does also mean control options may well be a thing in a future patch. I do have one theory though given the limited release on both digital and physical: I'm expecting these to show up individually on the eShop near xmas time next year *including* Galaxy 2. So let's see!
Ultimately I make no excuses for this package and it's probably not what was really deserved for the 35th anniversary, but it's still a LOT of game for the money and I look forward to revisiting these games I haven't played in 10+ years.

I just don't know if I can justify getting the game when my N64, Gamecube, and Wii are sitting right there. If there still was a Nintendo game dry spell I'd probably go for it, but Age of Calamity just kinda filled my fall release buy slot. I know they wanted to preserve the heritage, but even something more akin to Wind Waker HD would have caught my attention. Still, I'm really glad younger players can pick this up, and they definitely should.
Among Us, Hat in Time, tf2 economics and more are the only reasons I'll probably won't touch this

As someone who plays every game inverted Y axis on the camera the lack of option to choose is extremely upsetting. This basically renders sunshine unplayable for me. Devs need to stop forgetting about players like me.
Super Mario Galaxy was the first video game I ever played, and it holds a special place in my heart. I played it for the first time in years today on my first gen Wii, and it was a LOT blurrier than I remember

I bought the digital version a few days ago and have been playing these games non stop since I bought them. I also played them twenty years ago when they first came out as a kid. It’s pretty cool re living that experience as an adult.
It still bugs me that Galaxy 2 isn't included in this collection.

I remembered when BJ's had their small electronics section, They had Super Mario 64 on one of those kiosks where you could play the game in the store. That was essentially my parents babysitter while they were shopping.
Great review, loved the editing and retrospective feel to it! Though, personally I just can't get behind the idea of Nintendo making this a limited release, excluding Super Mario Galaxy 2 and selling it for a full $60 with arguably very little enhancements. As such I can't in good conscious buy this collection as much as I love the games.
Yeah i actually called that pricing. 10do overvalues its legacy content. Figured there was no way ud get all 4 for 60$. I thought theyd split it into 2 collections for 60 a piece tho so it wasnt as bad as i thought. I wish theyd do some real remakes. New modern assets for some older uglier games like the zelda 64s.

I cannot wait until this collection gets released. Super Mario Sunshine was my first ever Mario game I played and remains to be one of the best mario games i played on the Gamecube. I like how you talked about the good and bad in this. So many comments i see is about a icon that has not been changed or no extra levels in the games which apparently makes this bad. As someone who played games like Sunshine all those years ago I prefer it for how it is. Playing my childhood game again but in HD! Yes camera controls can sometimes be a problem in a game like Sunshine but i think it was always there so I'm used to it. I hope those who have not played these games yet will enjoy them for what they are and the joy it brought when playing them. Great video!
