Someone should make a video where 2 gamers who aren’t experienced get absolutely different rigs.
One is 320Hz monitor, maxed out GPU/CPU. With 8K mouse.
Other is 60Hz, 1080GPU/CPU equal. With Razer Viper V1.
Have them play against each other same game but also switch rigs after.
Also have them compete in single player games that require good response and such.
It would be a good test in seeing how big a difference hardware makes.

  • @Haloruler64

In the past, I had used a lot of different mice. Nothing high end, but good mice. And when I went to a Deathadder at a certain point, it was a BIG jump in sensor quality. Since then, minor improvements have been made, all these DPI boosts haven't really helped me play games. But the advantage is that even the cheapest name brand mice are absolutely AMAZING. Even the Basilisk X Hyperspeed I just got, which is a $60 wireless mouse, has no noticeable latency, an amazing sensor, and a 1000 Hz polling rate.
So I'm happy to see an 8000 Hz polling rate roll out to cheaper mice rather than being a flagship product. It just means that in the future, everyone will have hardware that far exceeds their own capabilities. And that's nothing but a good thing.

  • @destoked1633
    @destoked1633 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nice explanation of the technological edge of a 8kHz polling rate vs 1kHz but I'm surprised to see that neither RJN nor you guys ran the mouse through mouse tester or Benq's mouse rate checker in order to verify Razer's polling rate claims. The mouse is not sending the same amount of data constantly. I doubt that you come even close to 2 kHz when doing flicks. Even 1kHz is only reached when its required for the amount of data sent per second. In competitive gaming the highest reliably reproducible performance is usually preferred over intermittent peaks in performance. If there's too much polling rate fluctuation at 8kHz that number is more marketing than anything else and the target audience will stick to 500Hz/1000Hz. So yes there 's a way to either validate or invalidate the benefits you 'felt" to your aim during tests.

Seeing as you need really high monitor refresh rate and fps to not bottleneck the 8khz polling rate and get a bigger performance impact on your CPU, I can see myself only using it at 2k or 4k where it should be more of a reasonable upgrade, which is a nice thing to have.
I think the optical buttons will make the bigger difference. I went full optical already across mouse and keyboard.

So, after using this mouse for year and a half, I can tell you this:
You need a beefy CPU to run the mouse at 8Khz, otherwise, your games will start experiencing, stutters, lag spikes (Caused by latency) , and heavy FPS drop, depending on the title.
Practical experience: 1 - 2k will have barely any impact on your computer but keep in mind, 2k will give you an minor edge over most common mouses (As they run at 800 - 1200), unfortunately, because the performance drops as you go up (Diminishing returns, in reality 8K does NOT mean 8 times the performance, the higher Hz you go, the less you get out of it improvement wise), there's barely any difference between 4k and 8k, you might as well leave it at 4k.
In games such as CS: The difference is noticeable if going from 1k to 4K, however 2K isn't a huge enough difference like 4K was and 8K will feel, look and perform the same as 4K, assuming you have a strong enough CPU to keep up with the polling rates.
Also, big, big, big note: While I did not notice any difference in performance going from 60Hz to 144HZ, you might see a difference at 500+Hz, because that's the refresh rate the 8Khz setting would expect. not sure what monitors supports those speeds though.
I'm happy with the mouse, better than most of the ones I had through my time, but, atm, seems like 4K is the sweet spot.

So I've managed to get my hands on one and I can very clearly tell the diff between 144 and 240hz on screens and yeah at 240hz 240fps there's something to the 8k pooling rate it feels ever so slightly snappier and smoother. But do I play better with it? No. I play better with the GPW SL because I prefer the shape.

    1) How much CPU does it use (1000Hz can spike up CPU after mouse movement)

I picked one of these up about a month ago on a really good sale. At that price it's fine. The 8k polling works without issue for me. The shape is fine for me (fingertip grip). Palm grip is fine too. I don't like the cable though. It's super soft and that's good but it's braided and I really don't like braided. The middle mouse switch is way to sensitive on mine and I had to disable it because I was constantly clicking it unintentionally while scrolling in web browsers. I was able to work around the problem in gaming by reassigning any affected key bindings. I still use it but I doubt I'll buy another because of the middle mouse issue I have. As for the polling, I'll be looking for 8k mice in the future.

You can definitely feel the improvement going from 500 to 1000hz but 8000hz is as you mentioned reaching diminishing returns. It's free and updated tech so it's a move in the right direction IF you can lower the polling rate in the software, which I don't think you mentioned.

that 1ms does not matter much so dont expect any difference until you have a 360Hz monitor, a blazing fast pc that can keep pace without dropping frames, etc. what i say is 1mhz or 8mhz polling rate is waaaay down the list to worry about.

I really like your videos, Dmitry, but this one feels really stretched out for monetization purposes. You do not really transport information that could not have fit in a video half as long. Also you did not mention the issues, the technology apparently has right now - I'd like to refer you to Zy's video to find out about those. That one is only about 3 minutes long, too. No offense, but that's not the best look.

Are these optical switches going to address the seemingly inevitable clicking problems we see with so many mice using mechanical switches? I seem to be unable to avoid that annoying double clicking issue with my mice. It's also a problem for keyboards built with contact based switches, eventually developing key chatter even if you try to keep the board in pristine condition. As far as I've heard, optical switches are theoretically immune to this problem due to their contact-less nature, but I'm wondering if the same principle applies to mouse switches. In my experience, a couple MX keyboards and 4 mice have developed this involuntary double input problem over time, which is extremely jarring. I don't care much about the polling rate thing, though. I'm not a competitive FPS player myself, and I mostly play RPGs, where involuntary double clicking is a much bigger problem than latency. Even for standard productivity use the double-clicking is annoying as hell.

I bought the razer viper 8k and have been using 8khz polling rate to play mw2. It doesn't lag or anything but I noticed my sensitivity slows down a bit when I am on 8000 hz. Up to 4000, it's the same as 1000 which is fine. For example if I was dragging my mouse 5cm to move the pointer from point a to point b on 4000hz, it takes 8cm now on 8khz. Why is that? I get good frames, around 130 to 140. Clicks are instant and tracking is very good.

5ms response means an average of 2.5ms for the polling to click. You can hit the polling at 0mn or 5ms. The stats for the Razer Viper 8k are eight times better.

I still member videos form barncles saying that for his 60 inch triple tv set up, the high dpi multiplier was a benefit. But like, without the software to functionally be able to pick out your preference in sensitivity, like with whatever pixel count you have, whatever foot print your panel takes up, aspect ratio. I think as long as you get to have an imediate software in to be able to get dialed in pretty quickly. I dont remember which one, but one company implemented in their software having all number variations in dpi sensitivity. Where you could set it down to the single digit increments.
Linus also did a video recently, when they got another mouse in house. And they showed with their slow mo cam and covered some of the explanation of math to do with frame rate. So also being, people with 360 refresh rate would benefit a small bit with the whole 8000hz polling rate.
I don't entirely understand this technology and stuff though. Like, with monitors or touch screen panels, or even keyboards come with their own polling rate. Why? I don't get it, im not able to understand that stuff.

There was also the rog spatha and maybe the ouroboros, i think? But i remember the spatha having eother 2000hz or 3000hz polling rate. A really chunky weighted mouse though. Never really had any relevance but it was one of the first mouses to break a 1000hz in the first place.

I honestly wonder why Razer is doing all these things, yet they are unable to release keyboards with linear switches that don't have the US layout. If they sell the switches and have layouts for all the different territories, how hard is it to combine the two.
