    Eric, I think allot of us realize the stress and fatigue of doing a build with a definite timeline. Under such pressure you did an awesome job with this project. You have the power of editing your videos, yet you choose to show your mistakes. Convinces me you are an upstanding individual. Sorry but I did have to chuckle when you had plug wires crossed not only once but twice. Just recently finished a 350 for my 69 C10. Had it running beautiful quite a few times. Did a little more work to it then..... no start, no start, no start. Funny thing is they seem to start a little easier when you plug the coil wire back in! Happens to us all.

    I got a buddy that built a ford 5.0 for his bayliner and had the same thing happen. The oil pump was pumping all the oil up in the heads and starving the bottom end. In the end, rearranging vents (pcv valve) and a different pump solved the problem. In the end, it’s a strong small block with great torque..

    I'm more concerned with the crankcase pressure issue, although it could be related to the compressions stats. After a week or two of Dad driving it, I'd be interested in the followup compression test. In my mind, rings need more time to "mate" with the cylinder walls than a few hours of driving. Also wonder if that pcv valve is being overwhelmed. My boat has that engine, I removed the pcv and ducted straight to the air cleaner, cured a leak at the corner of the oil pan related to crankcase pressure. Just my random observations, and you did indeed show great patience with that dipstick.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it's a ring issue. I plan to do a follow up video with compression test to see what's going on. As for the PCV valve, I replaced it, no change. Thanks for the comment.

  • @sweenep86
    @sweenep86 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eric use a proper PCV valve hooked to a vacuum source, you can route it to an oil separator canister rather than the manifold. Those breathers filter air entering the engine, if you use them as crankcase breathers for air exiting there’s no oil separation and they just distribute oil mist over the engine.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the excess crankcase pressure is caused by too much blow by in cylinders 7 and 3. No amount of PCV vacuum will overcome that. Thanks for your comment.

  • @singletonperformance5473

    Nice recovery... 2hen adjusting the valves, I always do a 12 o'clock start position & end at 9 o'clock.. That leaves the lash you're looking for with a half turn, but insures you dont over adjust & flatten your cam lob... Nice work..👍

    Eric, awesome that it's together!
    Congrats!
    And you did everyone a solid bringing up proper break-in driving for a fresh engine.
    Well done!
    Just one thing - that air filter is too small, there just isn't enough surface area there for 383 cubic inches to draw enough air through when you wind it up.
    As an aside -
    I use 1/2 turn for preload on hydraulics, all the manuals say one full turn but one turn just puts the plunger too far down in the lifter, at 1/2 turn you usually end up with a few hundred more rpm before lifter pump up.
    Then again - it's not like it was built to race. (or was it.... Lol!!!)
    Nice Job Eric!!!!!

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far, the air filter doesn't seem to be an issue, but at some point I'll try it without to see what happens. Thanks for the info.

    • @Motor-City-Mike
      @Motor-City-Mike 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericthecarguy
      No problem!
      It was just something that came to mind when I saw it - it's a good looking air filter!
      There might not even be a noticeable difference on the street, and it's far from being any kind issue, it's just easy to forget that engine is now 10% bigger and it winds up higher.
      If there's room, on the big inch Big blocks (460s, 454s, 440s) I run double stacked 14" filters, I had a 460 that just didn't pull like I thought it should - someone pointed out it (one) might not be enough filter and they were right!
      You gotta be loving how hard that 383 can pull that truck!
      Awesome build - and as always you share the knowledge that people really need, not the B.S. others do.
      Good Job!

Fix the dipstick and I wouldn't be surprised to see it start blowing gaskets out of the oil pan, and / or valve covers.

Depends on the rings and bore finish. you should have almost intake vacuum in the crank case. examples of alternate ways of generating crankcase vacuume besides the pcv valve, a dry sump pump or if you look at a prostock car there's a little valve on the collector, why do they do this crankcase vacuum increases ring seal, reduces blow-by ,makes power, keeping your oil cleaner longer. with fuel injection you dont even have the worry of that damn fuel pump diaphragm drip drip drip ruining your oil. really good project you help alot of people gain knowlege never a bad thing... never

    Yeah, if fluid loss on the dipstick hole happens, generally speaking, you should pop it open regardless of any other indication. I mean, don't get me wrong, if you caught it quickly, then yeah, no foul, no harm, but if enough cycles were involved without oil...it's best to...pop it open. Especially so with a new-ish engine. Or at least use an inspection camera to judge the motions from inside. Scores, play, light behind the curtains, the works.
    I am guilty of having done worse, so i'm just sayin'.

    so cylinder 7 never had the boot pushed on far enough to lock the spring clip on the plug or it's defective and possibly not held/rotated/squeezed to purge the air/vapor lock out and let it stay in place. the boot/silicone grease can cause enough pressure to "push them off" but what do I know ;)

    Ive always heard its a 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after the lifter stops making noise while running. It messy unless you have an old set of rocker covers to cut the centers out of.

    With the PCV system, shouldn't there be a slight vacuum in the crankcase instead of positive pressure? Back in the day, we would test the PCV system with a little vacuum tester in order to certify the smog system. I know, that was a long time ago ...

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I suspect a problem with the rings in cylinders 7 and 3 causing the excessive crankcase pressure.

    You have a nice looking engine, and it should be a stormer. I assume you have a PCV valve to ensure plenty of fresh air through the crankcase. It looks like you do, but I got the impression from what you said there was too much crankcase pressure. To me that air filter looks too small for a 383 at full song. I’d go larger diameter and taller. But that’s just my opinion, and you know what is said about opinions - HaHa.
