    I'm forecasting one very happy ending.
    The 383 is a natural for a pickup - good torque down low to pull the truck around (much like a big block) with little effort, but still rpm friendly and with decent fuel mileage - perfect for something driven on a regular basis.
    I did plenty of 383s, from mild (including a few for boats) to serious builds for weekend race cars - and every customer was stoked that they decided to go with the 383.
    Eric, you nailed it! (again)

    I made my harmonic balancer Installer for under $15, a run to the hardware store and less then 30min making it. Just get grade 8 ready rod. 7/16 UNF and 3/4 UNC weld the two together, 3/4 couple nut and regular nut, a bearing that the outer race touches the HB and the inner race fits over the 3/4 rod and doesnt touch the HB. Then it doesnt gale the HB when installing. Had for a year ish used a couple times works as intended. (Chevy 350 gen 1 crank shaft)

  • @yambo59
    @yambo59 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Theres a specific installation tool for pulling on that harmonic balancer, its risky to pull it on with the crank bolt you can pull threads out of the crank nose. Also dont heat the balancer at all if possible or the rubber separation ring can be damaged - result could be the outer ring walking off the balancer at high rpm and doing lots of damage and a very bad day. You can also substitute RTV for the end seals now, they started doing it at the factory. But I agree, I prefer using the end seals as long as they fit well. Always gotta be careful of too - long intake bolts on a small block Chevy, they can hit the pushrods - also a bad day - lol Please forgive my kibitzing Eric, loved watching the build.

    @mewmewdesigns895 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    two tips. Throw the oil pickup into the freezer for an hour. I was able to twist mine in by hand after. second one is the reason the good set of intake gaskets didn't come with the end pieces is because they almost always leak after a short time on a chevy small block so most just run a small bead of RTV across rather than use the premade gaskets.

    Yep that's why I told myself for my 306 build I am sourcing a factory roller block so I don't have to run those lifters. That way if I ever have to replace a faulty lifter I don't have to pull the intake and heads.
    Also I thought of going with the steel comp roller rockers but I ended up going with the aluminum scorpion roller rockers as they have a life time warranty on them unlike the comps.

    I had a crank shit the threads out one time drawing in a balancer. Since then I have decided I will only install a balancer with a balancer install tool. Plus it is so easy drawing one in with the right tool. Oh and on the intake gaskets. Some intake manufacturers actually recommend a 1/4 inch bead of RTV for the ends instead of using the little cork gaskets between the heads.

    Just watching the series on this 383. I often wonder, before these projects even start, how much is planned on paper first. Like, how do you decide, to bore the block in the first place. How do you know what cam and valve train components are needed, whether to go with solid or hydraulic lifters, what will actually work, etc etc. Who answers these questions, the builder, the machine shop or a combination of both? I guess I'll search thru your channel as there is a lot of videos you've posted here. Beautiful work you did with this, so far I watched each segment twice. Thanks for these.

    Don’t go a full turn on initial install of valve rockers. You always adjust after the engine has heat cycled a few times.
    A bit of noise first off is better than a bent pushrod or valve or burnt valves due to them not closing properly.
    Never fill a filter with dirty oil that even new parts have been soaking in. Tip it in the sump if you want to use it but not the filter.
    To fill a filter ensure you are filling the input side not the output side.
    Always wash and clean new parts and check for machining debris before assembling engines transmissions or differentials.

    SBC’s as well as many other V8’s use 24tpi threads on the rocker studs and a lot of hyd. lifters will call for between .020 to as high as .060 preload. If you do the math it ends up being between 3/4 and 1 full turn to get proper preload. I usually just do 3/4 and it’s been fine for me.

    • @Milner62
      @Milner62 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LS swaps are just too common. Its like every Chevrolet you see they all have corvette engines in them. I like not following the crowd. Why my 63 will have reproduction Corvette style valve covers on it to compliment my 56 with the Thunderbird valve covers on there. Only difference is they are period engines not late model swaps. My truck how ever I am doing a 306 build for but its a late model block as I want a roller block for my truck since I drive the truck daily.
      Not going to do like I did for this guy at work and spend close to $70,000 on my truck by putting a 5.0 coyote in it.

    Dear Mr. Eric, thank you for posting informative videos, I'm sure for the newbie assembler it's a plethora of information and for some who haven't done it in 20 years or so it's a pleasant walk down memory lane. Thanks again

    I would like to note that using a Ford tool (Hammer) to tap the harmonic balancer into place IS a safe and practical way of doing so, but you should always 1: USE A BLOCK OF WOOD to absorb the impact. Even though you did use a dead-blow hammer, you should have instead 2: used a 48 oz. machinist hammer in conjunction with a soft piece of wood in order to safely transmit the most amount of kinetic energy into the balancer as possible with each strike, minimizing the number of impacts total.
    The dead-blow KINDA defeats that purpose and is ill-suited for this task, requiring higher velocities to be used with each inadequate blow... It's great for installing seals though!

    Half turn is best each cylinder at top dead center adjust both rockers and move on or use the GM method of getting it up on top dead center on number one and adjust 8 of them turn it over 180 and do the rest! , if your dad decides to put the hammer down and hits some high RPM's high oil pressure and your lifters pump up in between is safer, and remove his steel-toed boots! Lol

    On the push rods you could grind away a very little amount so you are happy with the rocker placement but you have to be very careful bc the afrs are thin there at least the 210s are and the bigger heads and that's also why you want to weld the guide plates so you don't have to worry about them moving when you torque them

    Don't worry about using lots of RTV... many modern engines don't use any gaskets... almost entirely sealed using RTV.

      Especially on intakes, never use those rubber cross overs at the front and rear. I personally dimple the block to give a bite and I use the grey RTV that ford use on their diesels for this area. For my 306 I am wanting to build I am just going to use black RTV.
